In this episode, Shivaun and Sharon discuss ways we can assess and build confidence. The confidence ruler is a great way of assessing your client's confidence in changing their behaviour. Asking rating questions helps your client to explore what is helping them feel confident (eg previous success) and what is holding them back. By exploring external and internal barriers, we help clients get clear about what is holding them back. Once all the barriers have been identified, we can support clients to create a plan to deal with barriers to change and to enhance/strengthen facilitators for change. Knowing the way forward and anticipating obstacles builds confidence. Underpinning it all is a mindset of curiosity and compassion. We encourage trial and correction and support clients to see how small steps lead to big changes. In this episode Sharon and Shivaun, dietitians and HCANZA accredited health coaches, explore common excuses, what we may feel or do when we hear our clients give us 'excuses' for why they haven't made a change.  Excuses are in fact valuable, as they are the client telling us exactly why they are stuck, or feel unable to take action. What can we do when we do hear excuses? Get curious, acknowledge and validate the client's experience, support them to discover all the barriers so they can evaluate and sort them, and then explore what can they do to overcome these obstacles. The final step is to support clients to come up with a plan. At Accredited Health Coaching Australia, we've developed health coach training courses, incorporating evidence based health behaviour change interventions and techniques that promote self-efficacy, self-determination and self-responsibility. You'll be introduced to a toolbox of motivational interviewing, positive psychology, the transtheoretical model and health and coaching psychology to assist you in supporting clients to achieve sustainable health behaviours and outcomes. HCANZA approved program provider. In this episode Sharon and Shivaun dig into what motivation is and how we can harness it to achive our goals. We discuss the role that external and internal (intrinsic) motivators can play on behaviour change, and how we can move along the spectrum from external motivation, to the place where our identity shifts and we become intrinsically motivated. Sometimes we wait for motivation to hit before we take action, although we can find motivation comes from the actions we take! We can support people to explore how values can drive our behaviour and find their deep 'why' for changing a behaviour. Helping people imagine their future self and linking to values and identity creates an energy around what is possible that can drive changes in behaviour.   CONTACT: Email: info@accreditedhealthcoaching.com.au Instagram: @accredited_healthcoaching_au Facebook: Accredited Health Coaching Au Web: accreditedhealthcoaching.com.au Courses: Creating change in 15 minutes. Topics covered include how changing behaviour is so much more than education and providing information, it's about harnessing curiosity and helping people to understand themselves. This approach benefits the client, who feels supported to take action, and also benefits the health practitioner to enjoy their practice and feel much more satisfaction in their role.   CONTACT: Email: info@accreditedhealthcoaching.com.au Instagram: @accredited_healthcoaching_au Facebook: Accredited Health Coaching Au Web: accreditedhealthcoaching.com.au Courses: Creating change in 15 minutes. This is just the beginning for Black Girl Voices -- it is only going to get better from here.    To conclude our first season, we are bringing you all a new series that we plan to do monthly called Hot Takes You Didn't Ask For. This series will allow us to share our reactions to what has gone on in the news from our perspective without having to make a new episode every time there is something to talk about. We all know that the news cycle is 24 seconds and is a lot to keep up with, so unless something HUGE happens that we feel the need to talk about immediately, we will begin saving our monthly round-up episode that you can expect on the last Monday of every month. This will allow us to focus on creating more in-depth, Black Girl Voices-specific content as well.    Topics covered in this episode:  Astroworld - who's to blame and the racism that emerged from this tragic event  Julius Jones - heartbreak, rage, and white power  Kyle Rittenhouse - white supremacy on full display  Ahmaud Arbery - our fears as we await the verdict (note: we recorded this before the verdict was in)  Mentioned in this episode: Julius Jone's video testimony    Support Black Girl Voices: Patreon: www.patreon.com/blackgirlvoices  Instagram: www.instagram.com/blackgirlvoices  Shivaun: www.instagram.com/shivaun_elizabeth  Caroline: www.instagram.com/carolinejsumlin

School is officially back in session, but this year, some school districts will be learning even less than the substandard Black history that is usually taught in our schools. With the current racial reckoning that continues to stir our society, many educators want to do their due diligence to incorporate anti-racism and inclusive training and education into their professional development and curriculum. However, many conservative state governments, as well as many angry parents, are refusing to let this happen.  This controversy is what lead to the state of Texas passing a major law that banned critical race theory, and any other educational content that even hints toward anti-racism, equity, or inclusion.  In this episode of Black Girl Voices: The Podcast, Shivaun and Caroline discuss exactly what Critical Race Theory is, why it's being attacked by parents and government officials alike, and how much it affects us as Black mothers to deal with this blatant refusal to teach our history accurately and ensure equity for our children.     Some links for you all: See more about the Texas bill here: https://www.texastribune.org/2021/06/15/abbott-critical-race-theory-law/ The actual bill: https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=871&Bill=SB3    Support us on Patreon for more inclusive content: www.patreon.com/blackgirlvoices  Follow us on Instagram: - Black Girl Voices: www.instagram.com/blackgirlvoices  - Shivaun: www.instagram.com/shivaun_elizabeth  - Caroline: www.instagram.com/carolinejsumlin

Have you ever wanted to run away from life?  In 2015 I was feeling so overwhelmed that I fled the country and ran away from being a lawyer! I told no one where I was going and fled to Thailand to be alone and save myself from having a breakdown. It was one of the best things I had ever done.  I went to Bali, Indonesia, then Chiang Mai, Thailand, and finally Calcutta, India for a month and told no one.  In this podcast I'll share what I did, I'll talk about the awesome travellers I met, and the life changing lessons I learned along the way.  Most people say you should always confront your problems and have the courage to keep getting up when you get knocked down.  They're wrong.  I learned that one of the best things you can do for your mental health is to run away from your problems and find happiness elsewhere.  I did and it worked out great!   As promised, here is the video of the morning after I arrived in Bali.  I felt the weight of the world had lifted off of my shoulders in this moment.   Also, here are random photos from my trip through Chiang Mai (and a few from Bali).  Sometimes it's fun listening to the narrative of someone's journey and then seeing the actual photos.   View from Green Tiger Vegetarian House in Chiang Mai Another view of my room while in Chiang Mai A cat cafe in Chiang Mai. Long philosophical talks with my friend Shivaun. Motorbiking through the Samoeng Loop. Riding the Samoeng Loop in Chiang Mai Hanging with new friends and the owner at the Green Tiger Vegetarian House One of the many night markets in Chiang Mai Awesome food at the night market! This baby elephant was so cute. It was fun feeding them! Fun with new friends on the way to the elephant sanctuary. Giving elephants a mud bath. Fun in the stream with the elephant! Delicious breakfasts every morning. Fish eating my dead skin Foot massage. She wasn't impressed. Even the cats had fun. Life advice that the Universe puts in front of you at the right time The moat around the city walls. Kuta Beach in Bali First stop was Bali! Rice terrace while drinking coffee. Volcano in Bali First stop: BALI   Stick around to listen to the end of the video. I recorded the podcast almost five years after this video and hadn't watched it until just now. Even back then in a euphoric state, I had reached the same conclusion: that it's okay to run away from your problems.
