June 17, 1980 is the first date in Led Zeppelin's Tour Over Europe, and on that date we find the band in Dortmund. They come out of the gate with something to prove, and they deliver. The show opens with an intense and dangerous Train Kept A Rollin' followed without a breath by Nobody's Fault But Mine, which now is truncated as the intro guitar is eliminated going right into the song. I like it. The Rain Song is perfection as it usually is with Bonzo bringing fury and bombast, which will diminish tragically as the tour progresses.

Led Zeppelin played Kyoto, Japan on October 10, 1972 on their second (and last) tour of the country. This is a merge of two excellent sources, put together and speed corrected by Dario Romero. The sound is very good as is the performance. You'll like it. Where else are you gonna hear The Rain Song played with a wah wah? The band are now the biggest band in the world and were set on making sure everyone knew it. They play songs from the as yet unreleased Houses of the Holy album. I love hearing audiences hear Zep songs for the first, and this doesn't disappoint. I play The Song Remains the Same (called The Campaign at this point), The Rain Song, and an Over the Hills and Far Away in which Robert sings the original higher melody for one of, if not the last time.
Lina takes over the pod and gives us our first open-ended poll!! So it's time to determine -- what is the best rain song??? See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I had the opportunity to chat with Austin rock duo The Caughtery. Formed in 2020, The Caughtery is long-time Austin music veterans Lisa Tingle and David Gayler, whose contemporary rock output is influenced by musical threads running from the 60s through current. Their 2022 debut EP "The Caughtery" presents a series of “musical paintings”, expressing the pressure and fragility of the human state over the last few years. In September of 2023, they released "The Rain Song," paying tribute to Led Zeppelin, produced and recorded by David Gayler and mixed by legendary producer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, Tin Machine, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, HIM, The Mission), who also worked with Robert Plant on his '"Shaken n Stirred" solo album. "This is one of Led Zeppelin's most beautiful songs. A beautiful ballad legendarily created based on George Harrison's belief and comments to the band members that Led Zeppelin needed to compose more ballads. Mr. Plant and Page apparently took that to heart and created this masterpiece," says Lisa Tingle. Lisa Tingle has received multiple honors at the Austin Music Awards (Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Best Song, Musician of the Year, Album of the Year), and has toured / performed with legends such as Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble, Eric Johnson, Stephen Bruton, Monte Montgomery and Marcia Ball. David Gayler is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and studio owner based in Spicewood, Texas. Having moved here from New York in the mid-80s, Gayler has been in various bands over the years, opening for such notable artists as The Romantics, Charlie Sexton and Jerry Jeff Walker, and was also a member of the Party Band during MTVs journey down to Texas in the late 1980s.What is the Caughtery ?"Cutting or making new sound but cauterizing it and sealing it as you go along the path." On the 5th Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the classic 1973 album, "Houses Of The Holy." Houses Of The Holy sees Led Zeppelin once again changing their style. The band tries, progressive rock, reggae, psychedelic, funk and more. The album contains live staples, like The Rain Song, The Song Remains The Same and No Quarter. Songs like The Ocean, Dancing Days, Over The Hills And Far Away and D'yer Mak'er are constantly heard on classic rock radio. Houses Of The Holy went to Number 1 in the USA and went 11 times platinum in the United States. The album cover is extremely unique and always warrants and excellent discussion. The Zeppelin Chronicles breaks down Houses Of The Holy, SIOL style. The guys discuss their connection with the album, the background of the album, the album cover and finally the songs. They rank the songs, then rank the album and album cover against the four previous Led Zeppelin albums reviewed. So although upon us all a little rain must fall lets find our Dancing Days! "Upon first hearing this field recording of a steady rainfall it reminded me of rainy nights spent writing at my favorite cafes. I decided to write a song lyric and layer it over the sound." Rain storm in Ghana reimagined by Christina Lucchesi.

We hear a tasty DADGAD remaster of the classic TMOQ vinyl of Led Zeppelin in Seattle July 17, 1973. This is a truly enjoyable audience recording and I play Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, and The Rain Song. Beautiful.
We hear a great recording of Robert Plant with Saving Grace in Vicenza, Italy from Sept 6, 2023. Robert plays four Zep songs in this show and we heart them all. I play Cuckoo (not Zep), Friends, Four Sticks, The Rain Song (beautiful!), and Gallows Pole. This is an intimate and lovely performance. Enjoy.
We're back this week to dive deep into the discography of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. Specifically, we'll be exploring their albums released between 1969 and 1973, picking our favorite and least favorite songs from each. Led Zeppelin, the iconic rock band formed in 1968, released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The album featured a diverse range of rock and blues-influenced tracks, showcasing the band's talent and establishing their unique sound. The album opens with the energetic "Good Times Bad Times" and includes other standout tracks like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Dazed And Confused," and "Communication Breakdown." Led Zeppelin's debut album set the stage for their future success and solidified their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin II - 1969 Following the success of their debut, Led Zeppelin released their second album, Led Zeppelin II, later in 1969. The album featured a heavier sound and showcased the band's growth as songwriters and performers. It includes the iconic track "Whole Lotta Love," along with other notable songs such as "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Heartbreaker," and "Ramble On." Led Zeppelin II further established the band's dominance in the rock music scene and demonstrated their ability to create powerful and memorable rock anthems. Led Zeppelin III - 1970 In 1970, Led Zeppelin released their third studio album, Led Zeppelin III. This album showcased a more acoustic and folk-influenced sound compared to their previous releases. It includes tracks like "Immigrant Song," "Since I've Been Loving You," and "Gallows Pole," which blend the band's signature rock sound with elements of folk and blues. Led Zeppelin III displayed the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles, earning critical acclaim and further expanding their fan base. Led Zeppelin IV - 1971 Led Zeppelin's fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV or untitled, was released in 1971 and became one of the band's most iconic and commercially successful albums. It features the legendary track "Stairway to Heaven," a monumental rock epic that has become one of the most celebrated songs in rock history. The album also includes other hits such as "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," and "When the Levee Breaks." Led Zeppelin IV solidified the band's status as rock legends and remains a classic album revered by fans and musicians alike. Houses of the Holy - 1972 In 1972, Led Zeppelin released their fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy. The album continued to push the boundaries of their sound, incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and even orchestral arrangements. Tracks like "The Song Remains the Same," "The Rain Song," and "No Quarter" showcased the band's musical maturity and their ability to create dynamic and atmospheric compositions. Houses of the Holy further cemented Led Zeppelin's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential rock bands of their time. Houses of the Holy saw Led Zeppelin grow as a band more than any of their previous 4 albums. After the enormous success of Led Zeppelin IV, the boys used some of their winnings to build home studios which allowed them to flesh more ideas and come to the studio with more robust ideas. John Paul Jones really stretched out the most showing his ability to play funk (The Crunge), arrange string sections (Rain Song), or take us on an epic ominous ride (No Quarter). Jimmy Page provides the killer riffs with the softer acoustic bits, Robert Plant adds his trademark lyrics and vocals while John Bonham hammers those drums to give everyone the space they need to shine. Joining us for the 2nd time is House of the Dragon creator/executive producer/head writer Ryan Condal. Ryan is an old school metal head whose passion for rock music is only eclipsed by his passion for writing and you'll hear plenty of literary references and big words we don't often hear on a show of our ilk. We discuss the majesty of Zeppelin, go track by track, discuss the Hypnosis cover and the songs that didn't make the cut but ended up on other albums. Ryan provides no hints on upcoming House of the Dragon spoilers but we had a great time talking about this legendary album which turns 50 on March 28, 2023. Where is that confounded bridge? Last Words presented itself when singer, Jeff Buehner was experimenting with an open tuning on an acoustic guitar, the same as The Rain Song by Led Zepplin. The pre-chorus, “Coins in my eyes, what will my last words be?”, fell into his lap both lyrically and melodically almost instantly. We hear brand new upgrades of Led Zeppelin Buffalo NY July 15 1973. Both the audience and soundboard sources sound better as we hear Misty Mountain, SIBLY, Rain Song, and a frantic Heartbreaker. Awesome show.
It's time for some Zep people! Put some Zep in your step because the Dancing Days are here again and there's going to be No Quarter! Sure they've done many styles and some say The Song Remains the Same throughout them, but Over the Hills and Far Away, they have The Rain Song. Unfortunately, The Rain Song keeps feeding into The Ocean and The Crunge on the seashore is getting out of hand... D'yer Mak'r? Author, podcaster and D&D 5e real play streamer Pat Edwards (@ThePatEdwards, thepatedwards.com) tells us about his world building process and what makes Zelda such a successful franchise despite selling us the same story over and over. Minari Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Sony) - Intro 1'38” - Grandma picked a good spot 3'30” - Halmeoni 1'23” - Oklahoma City 1'08” - Big Country 2'16” - Rain Song 2'12” - Minari Suite 3'48” - Find it every time 2'03”

As the last few hours of the year pass; as the last day of Elul passes, it is time to reflect on the craziest year in most of our lifetimes. How has it been? Do we feel closer or more distant? What should we feel? Part of the secret may lie within the concept of Elul itself. Embedded in source after source, we need to explore what our task is over this period of time. The Gemoro In Bava Basra relates how Iyov suggested that he was suffering because, perhaps, Hashem mixed up Iyov with 'Oyev' - meaning 'enemy'. Amongst the responses that Hashem gave to Iyov, was one where He said: “Who has divided a channel for the torrent of rain, or a path for the lightning of thunder”? I have created many drops of water in the clouds, and for each drop I created its own channel, so that two drops should not emerge from the same channel. If two drops were to emerge from the same channel they would destroy the earth and it would not yield produce. Now, if I do not confuse one drop with another, would I confuse Iyov with oyev? Now, amongst the many ideas behind this deep passage, is the fact that Hashem controls every single individual raindrop. He is aware of every placement. This is remarkably reminiscent of the famous prayer of Unesaneh Tokef which we will say over Rosh Hashono and Yom Kippur. There, we describe the precision with which Hashem scrutinises every individual, like sheep. He maintains an exclusive relationship with every single one of us, and we receive exactly what we should. But if we desire a positive connection, we have to make the first move. As we have noted before, the first few steps of AA express the need to acknowledge that we are powerless and need the assistance of 'a Power greater than ourselves'. If we want that connection, we have the opportunity to grab the reins, by recognising who is holding the rains. Have a sweet, inspiring and healthy year ahead!

'Such Gashmiyus!' One of those annoying phrases you hear when you're tucking in to a particularly tasty piece of food....It's calculated to rile you - makes you feel guilty for enjoying the physical too much. But is it a crime? The Gemoro tells us that after 120 years, we will have to give an accounting for the physical pleasures that were permitted to us, and we did not partake thereof. A more careful examination will show us that a key part of our prayers is asking for rain - particularly in Israel, but a key part nevertheless. It is intimately connected to financial and economic wellbeing. That doesn't sound very spiritual, does it? Well, think again. Our prayers for the physical, are a bridge to the spiritual. And Hashem's response? The rain - a bridge from the spiritual to the physical. Geshem - rain. The root of Gashmiyus...

I talk about the Led Zeppelin concert from February 14, 1975 Uniondale NY, about the release of Physical Graffiti, and play 3 songs from the excellent soundboard recording of this show. Graeme's remaster specifically. I play Trampled Underfoot, Over The Hills And Far Away, and The Rain Song (my favorite version). I talk a lot too, some funny stuff.

Works by Webern and Brahms performed by A Far Cry and Stefan Jackiw, violin and Anna Polonsky, piano on December 11, 2016 and October 5, 2014. Webern, Anton: Langsamer Satz Brahms, Johannes: Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 Hope you’re ready for a trip down memory lane: On this podcast, we hear two works tinged with the melancholy sweetness of youthful passion, remembered. Sweetness and passion aren’t necessarily the words most closely associated with the first composer on the program: Anton Webern, best known for his economical, exacting 12-tone works, written as a student of Schoenberg. Today, we’ll hear the pre-atonal Webern, in his Langsamer Satz (or slow movement) for strings. Webern wrote this piece as a young man falling in love. We’ll hear it played by A Far Cry, the Gardner’s resident ensemble. Next up: Johannes Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major, opus 78. Unlike Webern, who wrote his Langsamer Satz in the throes of youth, Brahms composed this violin sonata in middle age, when he was in his 40’s. But it has an unmistakable, naïve sweetness. And, indeed, the piece is sometimes dubbed the “Rain Sonata” because it quotes from a song by Brahms called “Regenlied,” or “Rain Song.” We’ll hear the sonata performed by violinist Stefan Jackiw, and pianist Anna Polonsky.
Legendary songwriter Mark James is best known for writing the perennial standards “Always On My Mind” and “Suspicious Minds,” the latter earning induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Greatest Songs of All Time. Both compositions were originally hits for Elvis Presley, who recorded additional charting singles by James, including “Moody Blue,” “Raised on Rock,” and “It’s Only Love.” Mark’s initial success came with B.J. Thomas, who hit the charts with his songs “The Eyes of a New York Woman,” “Everybody Loves a Rain Song,” and the Top 5 single “Hooked on a Feeling,” which was revived as a #1 hit by Blue Swede in 1974 and was prominently featured in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy. Additional hits from the Mark James songbook include Brenda Lee’s Top 10 country single “Sunday Sunrise” and previous Songcraft guest Mac Davis’s Top 10 pop single, “One Hell of a Woman.” Mark found his greatest success with Willie Nelson’s revival of “Always On My Mind” in 1982. The record hit #1 on the country chart, became a Top 5 pop single, won BMI Song of the Year, earned CMA Song of the Year two years in a row, and was awarded a Grammy for both Best Country Song and Song of the Year. Other artists who’ve recorded Mark’s material include The Box Tops, Percy Sledge, Lou Rawls, Pet Shop Boys, Julio Iglesias, Helen Reddy, Waylon Jennings, Fine Young Cannibals, Dwight Yoakam, Phish, and Martina McBride. In 2000, BMI named Mark one of the top Songwriters of the Century. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.

For their first episode of 2016, the Poster Boys depart from the world of one-sheets for a quick spin around some of music's most visually engaging album covers courtesy of the design powerhouse Hipgnosis. From Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Brandon and Sam explore the prolific career of a small design studio working out of London's Tin Pan Alley from the late 1960s until the early 1980s. They cap things off with a return to the world of film, where they open up the Flat File and find a surprising amount of unused work for Ron Howard's 1984 comedy, Splash.
