Book Vs. Movie: Where the Wild Things AreThe 1963 Classic Children's Book Vs. the 2009 AdaptationMaurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are has captured readers' hearts for decades, telling a timeless story of childhood, imagination, and emotional growth. When director Spike Jonze adapted it into a full-length film in 2009, audiences were treated to a visually stunning and emotionally complex retelling of the classic. Despite its beloved status, the book is often banned, prompting questions about the reasons behind these challenges. In this episode, the Margos explore the critical differences between the book and the film, examining how each medium handles its themes, characters, and tone.Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick looks back a pair of weird sketches that aired on "Saturday Night Live" in 1993, bombing the first time and killing the second. The sketches, featuring a hilarious Phil Hartman as the fictional editor of the real teen magazine "Sassy," interviewing teenage heartthrobs, were meant to be satires of early 90s pop culture and hunky male celebrities, but kind of missed the mark. Here, Nick plays both sketches in their entirety, gives you the background and creation of each sketch, tells you about the episodes in which they appeared, and how they still have dedicated cult fans who laugh every time they watch them. You will also learn about the cast members and hosts who were in the sketches, and get a complete history of the ridiculous magazine that inspired them (a magazine that actually launched the careers of people like Chloe Sevigny and Spike Jonez). Hilarious work from Hartman, Adam Sandler, Jay Mohr and others are showcased, in addition to exploring some classic 90s SNL moments. Let's get Sassy! [EP45]
Movie of the Year: 2002Adaptation.Does Adaptation. have the flexibility to be our 2002 Movie of the Year? After years of struggling to adapt Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief into a movie, Charlie Kaufmann wrote himself and his fictional twin Donald into the movie and made it about his struggles with adapting the book. He only told his friend Spike Jonez his new direction, and was sure he would be done with the industry but didn't see another way out. The result is Adaptation, a meditation on obsession and writer's block starring Meryl Streep as the fictionalized Orleans and Nick Cage in a fat suit playing the pathetic Kaufman twins. The Taste Buds discuss what the film says about storytelling, why the character of Donald Kaufman is necessary, and what director Spike Jonze does to leave his mark on a movie that feels very dedicated to its writer.Plus, they build a Mount Rushmore to 2002 trends, partake in a bit of Adaptation trivia, and give out some coveted awards!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Join our Patreon team! Everyone should have the freedom to decide what's best for themselves and their families, including when it comes to ending a pregnancy. This decision has dire consequences for individual health and safety, and could have harsh repercussions for other landmark decisions.Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health and independence of all Americans. Virtual Girl & Sad Boy: Spike Jonez's Her On this week's episode, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to discuss Spike Jonez's Her, a film particularly important and reflective of these times. With beautiful cinematography from Dutch/Swedish cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, and featuring touching performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, and the voice of Samantha - Scarlett Johansson, Jonez's look at love, loneliness, heartache, and artificial intelligence, Her is an interesting examination however a problematic and (for one of us, at least) highly unsatisfactory film. The discussion goes into this. We hope that you join us and formulate your taste. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

So you want to make music videos. Want to follow in the foot steps of David Fincher, Mark Romanek and Spike Jonez? It's not a bad plan at all. Many filmmakers start off in music videos. It's a great place to get experience, learn the tools and experiment.I've directed a few music videos in my day and have worked in some capacity on hundreds over the years. I wanted to do an episode where I breakdown my process for making a music video. The music video in question is for the band Ozomatli and the stand up comic Gabriel Iglesias aka Fluffy.Gab and I have done a few projects together over the years, two of which were music videos, Hey It's Fluffy and Stand Up Revolution.I had an absolute ball shooting both. Today we will be dissecting Stand Up Revolution, which was for his Comedy Central show "Gabriel Iglesias Presents: Stand-Up Revolution." It was a large production for me and I learn a ton.Take a listen!
“We're going to build Scarlett Johansonn for Salesforce!” Adam Honig declared to his business partner after watching the Spike Jonez movie Her, starring the actress. Frustrated with Salesforce and other CRM services, he thought, why not have a virtual assistant, like the one voiced by Johansonn, to replace all of that extra work employees are tasked with. This led to founding Spiro, which, among other things, listens to phone calls and reads emails, to deal with those tasks not only faster but more efficiently. Ultimately, Spiro hopes to “kill CRM” and replace it with a new application theory it calls “proactive relationship management.” This technology upgrade only works because it recognizes a pain point and offers a better solution to those currently available. In fact, a major problem with sales across the board, Adam insists, is that people constantly want a technological solution that is neither innovative nor efficient. More focus needs to be returned to good old-fashioned problem solving, and segmenting, to make sure the right message, and the right solution, are getting to the right person. Serving your customer in need, not the one your ego is drawn to, should always be paramount. Hear who Adam's biggest competitor is, why he compares the art of sales to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and which feature of LinkedIn might be making you look like a real ass. Quotes: “A lot of the new technology gets in the way. The emails, the subject, the body content, the calls to action, gloss over the most important thing that salespeople can be doing, which is really striving to understand the needs and desires of their prospects, to help them.”(4:13-4:33 | Adam) “So you need to really understand the pain, and you need to be able to help people articulate that pain in a way that's going to get the organization to take action.” (9:43-9:53 | Adam) “I love LinkedIn, it's a great platform, but it kills me. The number of terrible pitches I get every day, I cannot believe. Everybody talks about, ‘Me, me me. Here's my thing, in your face.' And if I don't respond, ‘Let me send you fifteen automated followups to that thing.” (14:53-15:16 | Adam) “My big competitor is Bill Gates with Microsoft Excel.” (25:01-25:05 | Adam) “You've got to know your segment. That's the whole thing.” (40:00-40:02 | Adam) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926 Connect with Adam Honig and Spiro:LinkedIn: @ Adam HonigTwitter: @adamhonig www.spiro.ai Check out Adam Honig's recommended reads: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780671027032 Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781936661831 The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we look at MTV. This little upstart cable channel first aired in 1981with very little content but a big dream. It fulfilled those dreams and then some. There would be no 1980s culture without MTV. The music, the fashion, the videos, all of it was first seen here. It low-key launched the careers of people like Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Spike Jonez, and John Stewart. It gave us Madonna's sexy lace, Prince's swagger, hair metal, music news, and Beavis and Butthead. This one will be a walk down memory lane and an exploration of one of the greatest cultural juggernauts of the past forty years. This week we're discussing Maurice Sendak's timeless children's book Where the Wild Things Are, and the 2009 film adaption directed by Spike Jonez. We did have a deep and insightful conversation about childhood, growing up, and what it means to become an adult, but then Orlando's computer melted from the heat and we lost the original recording. In this version, we mostly talk about the Jackass movies and the art of slapstick comedy. Stick around till the end to hear a scene reading from a lost manuscript that Dan managed to dig up from the dark corners of the internet.

1999's Mumford is a bizarre comedy/drama about a small town and the fake therapist who shakes it up and we mostly discuss it because it features Jason Lee skateboarding in it. We also talk about Lee's big breakout role in Kevin Smith's Mallrats (which features no skateboarding) and his days as a pro skateboarder, including his work in "Video Days", the seminal skateboarding video directed by a young Spike Jonez. All of that makes this more of an overall chat about Jason Lee's status as the pro skateboarder who had the biggest impact as an actor than a straight episode about Mumford. Still, we hope you enjoy. Grab yourself a chocolate covered pretzel (they're a little melty, but damn are they exquisite!) and give it a listen!
On this week's show, sparks fly on E Street for the first time in 6 years, New Order drops their first new song in 5 years, we nerd out over some of 2020's best rock docs, then bear witness to a sprawling 40-track "now you see it, now you don't" compilation. Mike Doughty is haunted by the Ghost of Vroom, and Waxahatchee & Hurray for the Riff-Raff team up with Bedouine to turn it up to thirteen. All this & much, much less!
Let the Record Show, the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl, continues its third season today, as hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace sit down with turntablist/DJ/producer Cut Chemist. In Las Vegas earlier this year for the unveiling of the Technics 1200MK7 turntable at his Boiler Room performance with Kenny Dope, the man legally known as Lucas MacFadden stopped by Let the Record Show to drop knowledge on some crate dug classics. Cut’s song picks reveal an obsession with the intricate sample-based production of Large Professor, the Bomb Squad and the Dust Brothers, along with some deep cuts from The Beatles, Giorgio Moroder and the Sylvers. It’s been a busy year for Cut Chemist, who recently contributed to Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse score. Cut also created the music for the Spike Jonez directed stage show Beastie Boys Story, with an accompanying Beastie Boys Book Mix. In this episode, Cut also teases a 20-year anniversary show for his cult classic, 7-11 inspired mix with DJ Shadow, Brainfreeze.
