Devendra Banhart, Phil Elverum, Jenny Hval and Bedouine discuss eating on tour, how art is intimacy exposed, and what can be learned from terrible shows. Devendra Banhart, was born in Texas and raised between Venezuela and California, where he attended the San Francisco Art Institute. After dropping out in 2000, he started moving around different cities, experimenting with songwriting and busking as he went. When he released his second album, Oh Me Oh My, in 2002 ,he signed to XL Recordings, and has since released nine albums and collaborated with artists like Anohni, Beck and The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti. His new album Flying Wig has just come out and was recorded in a Topanga cabin once owned by Neil Young. Phil Elverum is a singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist from Washington state. Best known for his musical projects The Microphones and Mount Eerie, he almost exclusively uses analogue recording equipment to make music and tends to compose as he records. His output spans more than 40 albums. Norwegian singer-songwriter, producer and novelist Jenny Hval's avant-garde music has a heavy focus on sexuality and politics. Her debut EP Cigars was released in 2006 and was nominated for a Spellemannprisen (the Nowegian Grammys). Since then, she has released music under her own name, Rocket to the Sky and collaboratively with Laura Jean as Lost Girls. Bedouine is a Syrian-American folk musician whose sound is beautifully reminiscent of 1960s North America. The latest installment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC report, released this month, gives us three years to drastically cut emissions. “It's now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees,” the authors of the report warn. But in reality, it's more likely that we'll double that number. If you haven't already seen the headlines, the report indicates that we'd need to cut emissions by almost half by 2030 and be at negative emissions by 2050 — that means we'd need to be taking carbon out of the atmosphere at that point — in order to avert the worst of climate change. But these are just the headlines — the actual report is around 3000 pages long, and is a pretty groundbreaking and radical document, at least when it comes to these kinds of reports by typically conservative scientific bodies. The report includes a great deal of research from social scientists, and for the first time, in a major way, debunks much of the economics behind neoliberal climate solutions, even going so far as to name colonialism as a driver for climate change, and even alludes to capitalism as a major contributing factor. To unpack it all, we've brought on someone who's actually started reading all of the entire 3000 pages of the report. Amy Westervelt is an award-winning climate journalist, founder of the Critical Frequency podcast network, and host of the podcast Drilled. Is the fossil fuel industry, as they would like us to believe, a demand-driven industry? Or has it really become more of a market looking for a product? Are we getting to a place where mainstream narratives no longer simply call for individual actions, but focus much more heavily on collective and systemic solutions to climate change? And are we finally moving away from seeing global warming as a strictly environmental issue, and instead to seeing it as one more rooted class struggles against systems like capitalism, colonialism, and imperialism? These are some of the topics we explore in this conversation with Amy Westervelt. Thanks to Bedouine for the intermission music. Upstream theme music was composed by Robert. While dissecting Joni Mitchell's “My Old Man,” LA's Bedouine realized how well the lyricist/songwriter is able to convey a mood. That inspiration was the fodder that lead to Bedouine's song “The Solitude.”
Today's Song of the Day is "The Solitude" from Bedouine's new record, Waysides, out now.

Liraz, Bedouine, Daniel Smienk and Tolga Boyuk discuss the link between music and heritage, turning the past into the future through music, and how to be creative whilst navigating obstacles. Liraz is an Israeli singer, actress and dancer of Iranian descent, whose latest album, Zan (which translates to "women" in Farsi), features collaborations recorded in secret with Iranian artists. Her music combines the traditional sounds of the Bağlama, a Middle Eastern stringed instrument, with 1970s disco and funk rhythms. Joining Liraz is Bedouine, a folk singer and guitarist born in Syria, who spent time living in Saudi Arabia and across the USA before settling in Los Angeles. Her inspirations range from her childhood to her travels, and the feeling of wanderlust. Tolga Boyuk is a producer and founder of electro-acoustic trio Islandman, whose music combines Turkish psychedelia with African roots. Daniel Smienk is the drummer of Amsterdam-based band Altın Gün. The group’s name translates to ‘Golden Day’, and their music seamlessly blends Turkish psych and traditional folk songs.

After discovering “God Only Knows” in 1966, Margo Guryan, a schooled jazz pianist who was taught by Bill Evans and Max Roach and studied alongside Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, decided to craft sunshine and baroque pop gems of her own. Her songs were recorded by artists such as Glen Campbell, Astrud Gilberto, Harry Nilsson, and Cass Elliot, and in 1968, she released her first and only studio album Take a Picture, which became a cult classic since its release and has influenced artists such as Belle & Sebastian, Beck, Cornelius, Sidney Gish, and Bedouine. DJ Zenner and Jack Kelly caught up with Margo via phone call to discuss her jazz roots, her friendship with Harry Nilsson, and her advice on life and love.

On this week's show, we spend quality time with 2020's most honorable mentions. All this & much, much less!
I listen to as much indie music as I do ambient music. I always keep a list of favorite albums and favorite songs of the year. As I was looking at some of my favorite songs I noticed that several of them were quiet tunes that would be appropriate for an LLM mix. So I grabbed those and a few more favs and came up with "Quiet Indie Songs of 2020." Squirrel Flower was my big discovery this year. I'd never heard of the artist before and a few of her songs turned out to be some of my most played tunes of the year. Phoebe Bridgers had one of the best albums of the year but my two fav songs on it were a bit loud for this mix so I went with the beautiful "Moon Song." I also want to give a shout out to a local band that made my top ten list this year - Field Report. Their album, "Brake Light Red Tide," has a great sound and beautiful production. The song "Puget Sound" appears on this mix because I listened the heck out of it this year. There's not much else to say other than enjoy this diversion from the usual LLM fair and an ambient 2020 mix is coming soon. Cheers! Fameache presents to your attention three new tracks: Bedouine, Jezebel, Khiva. Each of the tracks is unique in its own way and conveys all the talent of the musician. Inspired by the East and transmitting its motives, it is like telling a story in the track Bedouin. The track Jezebel is an alter ego, it is more typical of the 80's with elements of synth wave. The track Khiva is dominated by a breakbeat rhythm and a sequence of electric sounds that intersect with a melody as mysterious as the artist himself.

Well my friends since it's the end of the year I thought I'd make an episode about one of my favorite artists/albums of the year... Bedouine. Bedouine, also known as Azniv Korkejian is a Syrian born, Saudi Arabia raised, American aged, singer song writer based in Los Angeles. I know, it's a lot. Prior to conducting this interview I saw that basically every journalist is obsessed with the fact that she's from Syria. And at first I didn't even want to discuss it but the story is so interesting I had to dive in. Azniv's personal perspective and journey are what this show is all about. She had an entirely different career and started writing songs because it felt right. You'll notice throughout the interview that she has a healthy skepticism about pursuing music full time even though she's receiving so much attention. I found this skepticism refreshing and the sign of an incredibly intelligent person. But she didn't do it alone. After meeting Los Angeles based musician and producer Gus Seyffert, the two decided to simply make something they were happy with. Eventually the project got signed and now Bedouine is on like every best of 2017 list. I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with Gus and Azniv and I think you will too. And for the love of god go listen to her record.

At a time when raucous, highly produced pop, amplified arena rock and jittery electronic jams are the musical currency of the day, Azniv Korkejian is a tranquil pond. The Hollywood-by-way-of-Aleppo folk singer is a throwback strummer whose tour de force single “Solitary Daughter” contains what might be her mission statement: “I don’t need your company to feel saved… I don’t want your pity, concern or your scorn/ I’m calm by my lonesome/ I feel right at home/ Leave me alone to the books and the radio snow.” Think about how punk rock that notion is as you ponder the latest outrage from Washington or headline about a deadly natural disaster. Fittingly, Korkejian has adopted Bedouine as her stage name, a feminized version of the word used to describe nomadic Arab tribes who traditionally live in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East. And, as you will notice when she plays at this weekend’s 2017 MidPoint Music Festival and visits WCPO’s Digital Lounge on Saturday morning for a Lounge Acts set, she is a one-woman tour de force who doesn’t need rattling studio tricks to drive a point home. A serene singer whose calm nature is an antidote to the over-caffeinated popular music of the day, she chose the name as a symbol of her own peripatetic life. "Moving around so much caused me at some point to feel displaced, to not really belong anywhere and I thought that was a good title,” she explains in her bio. Born in Aleppo, Syria, to Armenian parents, Bedouine grew up in Saudi Arabia before her family settled in Boston and then Houston. Los Angeles; Lexington, Kentucky; Austin, Texas; and Savannah, Georgia were all stops along the road before she moved back to Hollywood to work as a dialogue and music sound editor. "I just kept meeting the right people, who were professional musicians, and even though they were going on these big legitimate tours, they were still coming back to this amazing small scene, still demoing at home, and I immediately felt welcomed to join in on that. L.A. actually made me less jaded," she says. It was the constant motion, the inhalation of so many cultures, sights and sounds that inspired the classic 1960s folk-meets-1970s-country-soul sound on her self-titled debut, which was released in July on singer Matthew E. White’s Spacebomb label. The gauzy album has hints of bossa nova and clear inspirations from Joni Mitchell’s forthright storytelling to Brazilian samba singer Astrud Gilberto’s groove and the melancholy of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. It was crafted with a crack team of side players, including longtime Beck/Tom Waits guitarist Smokey Hormel and bassist/producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, Norah Jones). But it is 32-year-old Bedouine’s clear-eyed, confident storytelling that rises above the lush arrangements. "While the rest of the record dazzles with sweetness—'like a lamp in the light of day/Drowning in summer rays,' as she puts it—the centerpiece is a haunting protest song," writes Sam Sodomsky for Pitchfork of the song emotional “Summer Cold,” Bedouine’s reaction to America’s role in the chaotic civil strife in her native Syria. To drive the point home, the singer uses sound samples she found to sonically recreate her grandmother's street in Aleppo. -- Set list: One of These Days - interview - Nice and Quiet Solitary Daughter
