Keyboardist: Gail NoblesHello everyone! This is GN from Radiae Applis Soul. Today's topic is Dick Griffey - Solar Records. Dick Griffey was a record producer and music promoter who founded SOLAR Records - Sound of Los Angeles Records". The label played a major role in developing a funk-oriented blend of disco, R&B and soul music during the 1970s and 1980s. As a concert promoter, Griffey arranged bookings for artists such as James Brown, The Sylvers, Aretha Franklin, Jon Gibson, Stevie Wonder and the Jacksons.SOLAR Records was a record label founded in 1977 by Dick Griffey, reconstituted out of Soul Train Records only two years after it was founded with Soul Train television show host and creator Don Cornelius.SOLAR began in 1975 as Soul Train Records, founded by Dick Griffey and Soul Train creator Don Cornelius. The first act they signed was an R&B vocal quartet they named The Soul Train Gang who performed one of Soul Train's many themes, Their first album was entitled Don Cornelius Presents The Soul Train Gang. In 1976, their second album, The Soul Train Gang, produced by Philly's Norman Harris, was released. The Gang broke up in 1977.Griffey reorganized Soul Train Records into the newly founded SOLAR label in late 1977. Griffey and Cornelius remained good friends, and as a result SOLAR maintained close ties to the Soul Train show.SOLAR was known for several others who enjoyed success, including: The Whispers, Dynasty, Lakeside, Midnight Star, Klymaxx, Calloway, Carrie Lucas, Collage and The Deele — which introduced singer/songwriter/producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and future music executive Antonio "L.A." Reid. Griffey had always believed in giving new talents the opportunity to create and develop their craft, and he was introduced to songwriters/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis by his A & R rep Dina R. Andrews (Dina Andrews Management Inc) who was the team's first manager, Reggie and Vincent Calloway, and Leon F. Sylvers III. By 1987, the label began to see its commercial fortunes decline. From 1977 to 1981, SOLAR was distributed by RCA Records, which had also distributed the Soul Train Records label during its two-year run.Griffey died at the age of 71 on September 24, 2010. He was survived by his wife Carrie Lucas, a singer he married in 1974; four children and five grandchildren. His daughter, Carolyn Griffey, joined Shalamar in 2005. She currently performs as a member.Well, I hope you have enjoyed today's episode, Dick Griffey. Thanks for tuning into Radiae Applis a soul on Sound Flave.

What's good family? In spite of it all, we see you standing tall. Yes, this time of year can have a grip on many of our loved ones. Our charge to you, as well as the charge to ourselves, is to continue to love on them through the madness, to let them know that they're not alone. Keep the simple things in clear view, and watch how the tides in our favor. We got this, so let's keep rising up. With that said, onward with the show. In this episode, we get it in with new music from the UK band Mad Yella, as well as another selection from another great UK band, The Secret Night Gang. Songs: Boogie Fever and High School DanceSongs by: The SylversPodcast Keyboard player: Gail NoblesPodcast vocals: Gail NoblesHow many of you remember the group The Sylvers?Boogie Fever is a song recorded by the group from 1975 album Showcase. It reached number one in the US on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Soul Singles Charts. I remember the family group's song High School Dance from their 1976 album Something Special. Written by the members of the Sylvers, it charted in 1977 at number 17 on the Pop charts and number 6 on the R&B charts. The Sylvers family consisted of ten siblings, nine of whom performed in the band. They were a great group. They made great music.I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to the Cat Bear

We welcomed Lalita to the show to discuss her new book "Circumcision of a Wounded Heart: An Unjust Journey Due to Systemic Racism, Classism, & Oppression"Lalita Yeldell was in for the ride of her life when a terrible head-on collision ended in tragedy. With two people dead, one injured, and Lalita fighting for her life and unconscious for almost a month; she woke to a complete nightmare. With broken arms, legs, memory lost, a shattered pelvis, and a ruptured liver, it was just the beginning of her world being turned upside down. While the worst was yet to happen, Lalita had no idea of the hell she was about to face. With crooked cops, prosecutorial overzealousness, and an unjust legal and judicial system, Lalita landed in prison for crimes she did not commit. After trying to overcome obstacles of racism, classism, and oppression, she looked to God for answers through prayer, which led her to truth and understanding... helping her to find peace. We talked about the brokenness of the U.S. Judicial System - especially were women and women of color are concerned. And we discussed ways that this systemic injustice can be addressed pro-actively.Book link: https://www.amazon.com/Circumcision-Wounded-Heart-Systemic-Oppression/dp/1736672312 Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/genealogy-adventures. As broadcast March 11, 2021. We remember Edmund Sylvers who passed on this date far too young in 2004 to start the show, then get into some rarities & recently unearthed tunes that only saw the light of day with an official release within the last few years. Part 2 we have new joints from Anderson.Paak, Ghost Funk Orchestra, and Jazz Is Dead for a very strong finish to the first hour, then it's onto our AMPED feature for hour two with a highlight of a smattering of great new tunes & a bit of a special section for part 4: Tunes that the public loves to death and the artists themselves loathe to no end.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Sylvers – Stay Away From MeNat Turner Rebellion – Fat BackWillie Griffin – I Love YouThe Outlaw Blues Band – Deep GullyTraffik Island – UlladullaThe Heliocentrics – Space Time GirlPart II (30:03)The Stylistics – Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)Silk Sonic – Leave The Door OpenGhost Funk Orchestra – LoneKarate Boogaloo – Bumpy's LamentGary Baertz & Jazz Is Dead – The MessageMonster Rally – Lazy HibiscusMonster Rally – Menagerie Part III (57:01)Chris Catalyst - The RideAdult Mom – WisconsinMumford and Sons – The WolfThe Wiggles – Elephant (Tame Impala)Metallica – BatteryPart IV (87:03)Kings of Leon – Sex on FireBeastie Boys – Fight For Your RightNirvana – Smells Like Teen SpiritThe Who – Pinball WizardRadiohead – Creep

tribute to a pioneering figure in the RnB, soul, disco and funk music…that helped shape up the careers of many top acts. His name is Mr. Cecil Holmes. Born and raised in New York City… Started singing doo-wop in ‘52 for the bands, Cavaliers, Fi-Tones and Solitaires. In the E60s, Cecil left performing and joined the business side of the recording industry. Barely in his 20s, he co-founded RMH Productions. His personality was a natural fit for promotion and sales which proved to be right.. Throughout the 60’s he worked for Columbia and later as a Regional Manager for Mercury Records… promoting the artists Clyde McPhatter, Bobby Byrd, Dee Dee Warwick, and Mack Rice. His next stop was Cameo-Parkway Records where he began a friendship with Neil Bogart. In 1967 they moved to Buddah Records….whe he as a VP signed the Impressions, Edwin Hawkins Singers, the Five Stairsteps and Gladys Knight & the Pips. Thru Buddah records, he also distributed Curtom, T-Neck, Hot Wax, and Sussex Records which had many big names in the black music genre. While at Buddah Records, he produced 2 albums under the name "The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sounds," in 1973. The following year, Cecil relocated to LA to join Neil Bogart for his next venture, Casablanca Records. As one of the original founding partners, Cecil helped launch the label with albums by KISS and Parliament. He also worked closely with the Pips, the Sylvers, Hugh Masekela and he helped Donna Summer, Village People and other disco artists to worldwide success. While working as VP od Casablnca, in 1975, Cecil premiered his own custom label...Chocolate City... named after Parliament's album "Chocolate City". At Chocolate City he had biggest success with the band Cameo…and he also signed Brenda & the Tabulations, Vernon Burch, Randy Brown, Starpoint, 7th Wonder and Kevin Moore (later known as Keb’ Mo). In 1980, Neil Bogart and Cecil Holmes sold Casablanca records to PolyGram. After that, Cecil joined CBS Records as VP for both Columbia and Epic Records. He worked with top acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, Mtume, and Luther Vandross. A few years later, Cecil and Larkin Arnold signed New Kids on the Block to Columbia Records…which brought him the biggest worldwide success. Stay safe, G

As broadcast March 6, 2020. We welcome back our favorite Irish-American spirit animal & lover of all things music Kelly Finnigan as he returns from his solo European tour & prepares for the release of the new Monophonics LP "It's Only Us" via Colemine Records on March 13. We got a sneaky exclusive listen to a couple of tunes off the album prior to release along with a great interview with the artist where he discusses doing string arrangement for the first time professionally, his love of library music, and a possible live album dropping soon (maybe). We could have turned this into a four hour special no joke, but alas we only had two. Kelly dropped some classics for his playlist from Neil Young, The Sylvers, and Curtis Mayfield while the spillover from his playlist actually had him take over the playlist for most of part 2 in our 2nd half hour to boot! Let the Record Show, the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl, continues its third season today, as hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace sit down with turntablist/DJ/producer Cut Chemist. In Las Vegas earlier this year for the unveiling of the Technics 1200MK7 turntable at his Boiler Room performance with Kenny Dope, the man legally known as Lucas MacFadden stopped by Let the Record Show to drop knowledge on some crate dug classics. Cut’s song picks reveal an obsession with the intricate sample-based production of Large Professor, the Bomb Squad and the Dust Brothers, along with some deep cuts from The Beatles, Giorgio Moroder and the Sylvers. It’s been a busy year for Cut Chemist, who recently contributed to Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse score. Cut also created the music for the Spike Jonez directed stage show Beastie Boys Story, with an accompanying Beastie Boys Book Mix. In this episode, Cut also teases a 20-year anniversary show for his cult classic, 7-11 inspired mix with DJ Shadow, Brainfreeze.

Chris & Kelsey are safer at home and have nothing better to do than watch a 6-hour television miniseries about a global pandemic and then record one of the podcast's longest episodes yet! The Classic Miniseries: The Stand (1994) "After a deadly plague kills most of the world's population, the remaining survivors split into two groups - one led by a benevolent elder and the other by a maleficent being - to face each other in a final battle between good and evil” (IMDb.com). Even though this 6-hour miniseries is based on one of Stephen King's longer novels, this televisual epic had everything 90s TV was good at -- namely a high confidence-to-capability ratio! The Modern Film: Quarantine (2008) "A television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers” (IMDb.com). Woodson said teaching black history was essential to ensure physical and 45. intellectual survival. - "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated. The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of 46. tradition; and where is he today? The Hebrew keenly appreciated the value of tradition, as is attested by the Bible itself. Despite worldwide persecution, therefore, he is a great factor in our civilization." 47. Why is she being featured: "Sweet Thing", she is breaking out, and I don't want to cover disco yet. 91. Short story: 92. Born and raised in Chicago housing projects, the oldest of five. Started singing early, formed a girl group at age eleven. Changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi at thirteen and started running around with the Fred Hampton and the Panthers. In 1969, at age16, she dropped out of high school, left the Panthers, and focused on singing with local bands. In 1973, she joined the band Rufus. The first album in 1973 was a dud, but Stevie Wonder was so impressed by Chaka Khan's vocals, he wanted to write a song specifically for her. "Tell Me Something Good", written by Stevie, on their 1974 album won a Grammy. (He also played harmonica on 'I Feel For You'.). But, because of her increasing popularity the record label started calling the group Rufus "Featuring" Chaka Khan, (which was the title of their fourth album that had the hit single "Sweet Thing") and this caused tension in the band. She was back and forth with the group for a few years. Went solo in 1978 and became a legend. (10 Grammys, 8 of them solo) 93. [Audio Clip] 94. Open Comments: 95. Movie Scene 96. Notable releases 97. Why is it featured: The Soundtrack is DOPE!! 106. Short Story: An episodic comedy about a day in the lives of the employees and the owner of a Los Angeles car wash. 107. Critic Review: "Car Wash initially left critics unimpressed (except for Roger Ebert who correctly called it a "wash-and-wax M*A*S*H") but over the decades both the film and the soundtrack have left their mark on pop culture. With its Afros, bell-bottoms, cars as big as boats, and disco soundtrack, Car Wash is a perfect time-capsule of America's bicentennial year." - http://www.threemoviebuffs.com/review/car-wash.html 108. Why is it featured: The last show dedicated to black families until(?) The Cosby Show in 1984. The next few years introduced the interracial family dynamic. (Different Strokes like stuff.) 114. Short Story: Loosely based on Cooley High. What's Happening!! follows the lives of three working-class African-American teens living in Watts. 115. Critic Review: Unlike its contemporary Good Times, What's Happening!! isn't committed to presenting enlightening social commentary or providing empowering African-American role models. Most of the problems the gang faces here are typical of what kids from any community have to deal with. While the show has its funny moments (especially when Dee offers her strong, often sarcastic opinions), much of the show's humor stems from a slapstick-like comedy style that's reminiscent of the minstrel show stereotypes of the 1930s - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/whats-happening 116. Kangol is being honored by the American Cancer Society on May 17th at their annual Pink and Black Tie Gala in Brooklyn for the work he has done raising funds and awareness for Breast Cancer with the Mama Luke Movement, which he co-founded with his friend and business partner Shaunda Lumpkin. In May 2010, Shaunda's mother Gay Frances Lucas aka Mama Luke lost her 3 year battle with breast cancer 2 weeks after enjoying a cruise of a lifetime when she joined Kangol and Shaunda on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage. Mama Luke had the pleasure of meeting many classic Hip Hop artists on this cruise and, in hearing of her passing, many of them have joined Kangol to be part of Team Mama Luke's fundraising efforts. "After years of watching the Jackson Five, Sylvers, Osmond Brothers and Tom Jones and deciding he wanted to be an entertainer, Kangol was asked to join rap group UTFO as a breakdancer. While "Roxanne, Roxanne", their phenomenal top 10 single screamed up the charts, U.T.F.O. were voted best rap group, at the Urban Music Awards, had featured spots on Don Cornelius' Soul Train, Phil Donahue Show and performed live for actors like Dustin Hoffman, Tony Danza and was the first rap group to perform at Harlem's World Famous Apollo Theater as they opened for Hall & Oates and Temptation's Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Kangol acquired his nickname from neighborhood friends, because of the many Kangol hats he owns and wears. He is also officially sponsored by Kangol Headwear, Inc. He balances his time between Producer, Composer, Performer, Artist Manager, Songwriter, President of his music production company, Kangol's Kreations, Inc., and CEO of his Public Relations firm, Kreative Media Group. His lecturing at High Schools and Colleges nationwide (including Harvard) on today's business of music has led this Brooklynite to receiving a proclamation from NYC for being the first Haitian in Hip-Hop Music.

Leon Sylvers first rose to prominence in the early 1960s as a member of The Little Angles harmony vocal group featuring his siblings (Olympia, Charmaine, and James). During this time they appeared on variety shows such as Make Room For Daddy and You Bet Your Life. Following their parents divorce, Leon and his older siblings went to live with various relatives before reuniting with their mother Shirley and their four younger siblings in Los Angeles, California. In 1970, Leon entered the family act into a local talent contest which now included younger brothers Edmund and Ricky. They won that talent contest hands down due to their versatility, choreographed and harmonies. The impresario Mike Curb signed them to MGM Records in 1971 and marketed them as The Sylvers. Leon wrote his first hit single ("Wish That I Could Talk to You") which was on their debut album called The Sylvers. He also penned his brother Foster Sylvers' Top 10 US R&B chart single "Misdemeanor" which was a hit during summer of 1973. For the next several albums, Leon would continue writing songs on his family's albums which included 1977's Top 10 US R&B chart single "High School Dance". In 1978 Leon would produced The Sylvers most critically acclaimed album, Forever Yours.
