Can belly dancing really help strengthen your pelvic floor and support women dealing with bladder leaks or incontinence? Rita De Michele speaks with Jennifer Sobel, a professional belly dance instructor with over 21 years of experience and the creator of The Belly Dance Solution. Jennifer shares how this research backed movement approach combines ancient belly dance wisdom with modern pelvic floor science to help women build strength, confidence, and a more enjoyable connection with their bodies.
On today's episode I am joined by Jennifer Sobel (@femininefireofficial), a professional belly dance instructor and creator of The Belly Dance Solution, to explore how movement can deeply support fertility, pelvic health, and overall well-being. With over 20 years of experience and a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jennifer brings a unique perspective on how dance can be both healing and empowering. In this episode, we dive into how belly dancing strengthens the pelvic floor, improves circulation, and supports reproductive health. We also explore the powerful mind-body connection, the role of awareness in healing, and how playful, feminine movement can regulate the nervous system and bring energy back into the body. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that healing doesn't always have to feel like work, it can feel like joy, expression, and connection. Key takeaways: Belly dancing strengthens the pelvic floor while promoting both contraction and relaxation Movement increases blood flow and energy (Qi) to the reproductive organs Awareness and intentional movement can shift both physical and emotional health Nervous system regulation plays a key role in fertility and overall well-being Playful, feminine movement can be a powerful and healing modality Guest bio: Jennifer Sobel (@femininefireofficial) is a professional belly dance instructor with over 21 years of experience. She's the creator of The Belly Dance Solution - a research-backed program that's been featured in Women's World magazine (twice!) and First for Women. Over 30,000 women have joined the program to address bladder leaking through targeted belly dance movements. DOPEYWOOD TICKETS: http://events.leapevents.com/event/dopeywood-2026 Patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Dave tees up a Greatest Hits episode featuring Hasnie, a belly dancer turned first responder alcoholic with a wild, emotional story. Before that, we get a classic Dopey email about a reckless dealer named King who jumps out a window during a raid and later crashes a car doing whippets. Then shit gets real when Matt calls in mid-show ready to relapse. Dave and Ray talk him off the ledge in real time — and somehow even his dealers tell him not to use. Hasnie's story is intense: early chaos, booze, pills, sex, trauma, sending her kids away, and hitting bottom hard. She gets sober after a moment of clarity, goes to rehab, and finds her footing in Gay AA and SLAA. She rebuilds her life, gets her kids back (including rescuing her daughter from Ukraine during war), becomes a first responder, and stays sober through COVID and real-life trauma. “Since I've been belly dancing, I don't have bladder leaking anymore.”There's a growing conversation in women's health around doing everything “right” when it comes to exercise. The right intensity, the right timing, the right protocol for your hormones, your nervous system, your stage of life. And while there's value in understanding those nuances, when we get caught up in the details, movement becomes just another thing to optimize, measure, and get perfect. Many women are navigating pelvic health challenges like incontinence, pain, or disconnection from their bodies, often alongside a deeper sense of tension, fear, or even shame around movement. And in that context, more precision and more perfection aren't usually what's needed. Sometimes what's missing is a way to reconnect with the body that feels safe, intuitive, and even enjoyable.Today, I'm joined by Jennifer Sobel, professional belly dance instructor and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to explore how belly dance can be used as a therapeutic and accessible tool for pelvic health. We talk about how these movements naturally build strength and mobility through the pelvic floor, why they can be especially helpful for women who feel disconnected from their bodies, how clinicians can integrate this kind of movement into pelvic rehab, why consistency matters more than perfection, and how bringing joy back into movement may be one of the most important shifts we can make in women's health.---Learn more or watch the video version of this conversation at https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/how-belly-dancing-and-pelvic-rehab-heal-incontinence-and-bring-joy-to-healing-with-jennifer-sobel/.Connect with me and access our entire platform at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com (https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/).Find and follow us @integrativewomenshealth on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@integrativewomenshealth) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/integrativewomenshealth/).

Send us a textRoberta Nickel shares insights with Mark about her 18-plus years in the Canadian Navy, as the only woman in her unit. Her time as her mom's caregiver led to her discovering a love of belly dancing. Into the mix was embracing the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval live events group, which was interestingly paired with her entry as a practising Wiccan. She relates dancing for her commanding officer on his 40th birthday. There is the unique experience of guiding a blind friend through every ride at the Calgary Stampede. Roberta BioRoberta was born in Calgary and did her schooling there. She is a second-generation Calgarian. She is a railway brat as her father worked as a conductor for the CNR and she saw a lot of Western Canada from the window of a train. When she turned 17 and 6 months, she joined the RCNR and Became a Communicator, which made her father proud. She spent 18 and a half years in the navy and saw much of Canada during that time. She can tell you a lot about that time. Just ask her. After doing her time, she became her mother's caregiver. She did that until 1998 when her mother passed away.Roberta does Belly dancing and Square Dancing to relive stress. She also rides horses; can do Archery; does Background acting; and enjoys Reading. She is a witch and enjoys learning the many aspects of it.She had always wanted to do a Playboy style photo shoot and that is when she met Mark and the rest is history. She has many photos that tell a story. Thank you Mark.Roberta also likes to travel and has been to Scotland and Egypt. Would she return? In a heartbeat. She also works for the Calgary Stampede in Catering . What's next for this lady? Only time will tell.

Born in Istanbul and having spent time in the UK as a teen, Inji came to America to attend the no. 1 business school in the US at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied fiance. Despite being a classically trained pianist, Inji didn't see a career in music as a possibility until a just-for-fun track she created with a friend went mega-viral on TikTok. She eventually released the track as her debut single, “GASLIGHT” in 2022. But it was the success of subsequent singles “MADELINE” and “BELLYDANCING,” that convinced her that she had something there. Listener Week is when all the topics, interviews and discussions are chosen by YOU!What is it like to parent a neurodivergent child when you are neurodivergent yourself? Anita Rani speaks to listener Rachel, who discovered she had ADHD after her daughter was diagnosed, and Jo, whose children have dyslexia. How one moment or person can change your life's trajectory. Listener Bettie tells Anita how a childhood invite to a friend's house introduced her to a new way of life—one she says saved her. The menstrual cycle, periods, time of the month. One listener, Tracey, wanted to know what things were like for women dealing with this in centuries past. Anita finds out more from Dr Sara Read, who is a Senior Lecturer in English at Loughborough University, with a specific focus on women's reproductive health and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.A listener asked us on social media: How can childless people leave a legacy? Statistics from the Office for National Statistics found that more than half (50.1%) of women in England and Wales born in 1990 were without a child when they turned 30. Whether it's by choice or circumstance, many women don't have children – what legacy do you leave without them? Anita discusses the idea with author Marianne Power and Nicola Brant who is Head of the Estates, Tax & Succession at the firm Thomson Snell & Passmore. As part of Listener Week, we discussed tummies and feeling confident about your midriff. One listener got in touch to say she'd started belly dancing to help with this. Belly dance instructor Leilah Isaac tells Anita why she finds it so empowering.Presented by Anita Rani Producer: Louise Corley

On today's episode we have the pleasure of sitting down with Charlie (lead vocals) and Alex (bass) from Flight Club (NOT Fight Club); a four piece rock band hailing from our own RVA! We saw them play at River Rock last year after they were handing out free stickers to the crowd and we were blown away by their music. They played an amazing pop-punk cover of Unwritten by Natasha Bendingfield and we were instantly hooked! We also saw them more recently at the Broadberry when they opened for 408 and We The Kings. They sound right on par with those two big bands. Today you'll learn all about the band. Big Daddy will also drop it on us with some funny news about this year's Coachella and we'll discuss the pay gap between men and women's basketball. In this engaging episode, I have a deep and insightful conversation with Helen Blondel, a content creator and entrepreneur. We explore the intricacies of entrepreneurship, the creative process, and personal growth. Key Points: The Importance of Breaks: I reflect on the significance of taking time off to prevent burnout and regain a fresh perspective. I note that such breaks can lead to a renewed sense of purpose and clarity. Humanity in Entrepreneurship: Helen emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our human need for rest. She points out that taking breaks is crucial for returning to work with a rejuvenated focus and improved service to others. Growth Ambitions: Helen shares her aspirations to expand her influence beyond Florida and even internationally. She plans to use social media and in-person workshops to grow her audience. Journey in Content Creation: Helen recounts her evolution as a content creator, starting with dance videos on Instagram and later incorporating educational and comedic elements on TikTok. This strategic shift resulted in a substantial increase in her following. Handling Negative Feedback: We discuss managing negative comments. Helen talks about converting criticism into comedic content, which not only engages her audience but also plays well with social media algorithms. Vision and Tenacity: Helen advises listeners to envision their future success and persist through obstacles. She highlights the need for discipline and managing attention in today's rapid content landscape. Message to Younger Self: Helen would tell her 13-year-old self to disregard others' opinions and to persistently pursue her passions, regardless of any negativity encountered. Individual Paths to Success: Helen and I agree that success doesn't have a universal roadmap; each person must find their path by experimenting with different approaches while staying focused on their aspirations. Concluding Thoughts: Helen uses the diamond analogy to inspire listeners, suggesting that enduring pressure can lead to becoming the best version of oneself. She encourages embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Find Helen here: https://www.instagram.com/helensingerdancer/

I didn't realise just how important the role of our bellies is in keeping us alive, balanced and fully functional in mind, body, spirit and heart until I met Mavra Grimoprez who is on a mission to raise awareness about the importance of the abdominal space to human beings. Her journey of how she arrived at this place is just as intriguing as the teachings she is sharing with the world about bellies. On this episode, I chat with Mavra Grimonprez on: Why shifting your belly can shift your world The importance of learning how to learn Practising what you preach - it all starts with self-discipline Remembering that we are not separate, we are all connected and one with the Earth Plus so much more! Mavra is the Founder of Bellyshift and a Belly Dance and Yoga Teacher. She is a French woman who fell in love with Australia and moved there for good in 2013. In hopes of being of service to the environment, she studied life, marine, plant, and earth science for years. It turned out teaching is, in fact, her true love and fulfilment. Having two beautiful and passionate teachers for parents, she never thought she would so happily embrace the "family curse". Mavra's life goal is to create a coherent personal and professional endeavour, which brings together all she values, loves, and feels entitled to teach due to her knowledge and experience. She created Bellyshift which centres on the human Belly: because her relationship with her own belly has consistently been as challenging as joyously transformative and also too many human bellies worldwide are in great need of help right now. She treasures all the people who have given her enough love and support to enable her to live alone far away from her roots and family for so many years. In this episode I am interviewed by my friend Bianca Taylor to discuss how twerking (which really is just a modern term for a traditional African dance move)+ belly dancing (which is also a modern term the colonizers placed over Middle Eastern dance forms) are also forgotten forms of the sacred feminine path to spirituality. We dive into how embodiment can somatically heal, and our own journeys that led us to these practices. We also talk about getting off birth control + it's unexpected side effects, tuning into your dharma, and changing your career to be more in alignment. This is a jam-packed, juicy episode that will encourage you to break out of the rigid box we are taught to stay in as spiritual beings.
