Over the course of my life, I've had the incredible privilege of sitting at the feet of world-class teachers. When you spend time with someone who is truly a master of their subject, and they know how to teach and communicate it, you walk away a little bit taller because you've been in the presence of greatness. That's how I feel every time I get to talk with John David Mann—a master author and storyteller. John is the award-winning coauthor of over 30 books, including 9 New York Times and national bestsellers. His classic, The Go-Giver (written with Bob Burg), won the Living Now Book Award's Evergreen Medal for its “contribution to positive global change.” John's first novel, Steel Fear (written with Brandon Webb) was named one of the “best books of 2021” by Publishers Weekly. His new novel, Blind Fear, comes out next month, and his latest leadership parable, The Vagrant (written with Dan Rockwell), comes out in September. John also leads a training and coaching program called Writing Mastery Mentorship. You can find out more about John by visiting https://johndavidmann.com, as well as his series with Brandon Webb by visiting https://webbandmann.com. One more thing before we get to the interview: I am thrilled to be part of an author event for John at the Daniel Boone Branch of the St. Louis County Library on Wednesday, August 9 at 8pm, in partnership with Left Bank books. This is part of John's national book tour for Bind Fear. If you're in the St. Louis area, I invite you to come meet us in person and help support John's new book. In today's conversation, recorded a few weeks ago, John talks about a variety of topics related to storytelling, including his process for co-writing with different authors, how he handles transitions and chapter breaks in fiction, how he approaches thrillers and parables differently, and much more.

There are many different types of writing—journalism, novels, short stories, nonfiction, blog posts, graphic novels, and a hundred others. But one thing that ties all writing together is storytelling. Stories are the way we process information and make sense of our lives. Therefore, it is critical that we learn how to construct and weave stories the best way can. It's a craft I am still very much learning, and I'm thrilled that our guest today is here to help us learn to be better storytellers. In this episode, Kirstin and Mark talk with https://johndavidmann.com/ (John David Mann) John is an award-winning and best-selling author of more than 27 books that focus on parables about leadership like the Go-Giver series, The Latte Factor and Out of the Maze, which was the sequel to Who Moved My Cheese. Since Entelechy is about leadership, we asked John to highlight what you can learn from the Go-Giver leadership and why it still is such an appealing book 12 years later. John tells us how his early career as a concert cellist and prize-winning composer, changed by collaborating with Bob Berg on the Go-Giver books and shares with us the secrets to becoming a great storyteller.  What collaborating and ghostwriting on some different projects including a memoir for an ex-Navy seal sniper, has taught him about leadership. Focusing on the go-giver series in leadership, John Mann highlights the 2 types of leaders and how leaders can move from getting (whether it's from their investors or stakeholders ) to giving.  In addition, we talk about the 4 fingers and thumb rule when it comes to great leaders. And out of these, you will learn how to be: Receptive leader and person in general.  Living with a spirit of generosity Getting into the flow of giving and how it becomes your native state of being When it comes to working in a team as a leader, John tells us how to balance perspective and empathy. And acknowledging your part of a cooperative enterprise.   John's main takeaway from this series is if you put your focus on helping other people by putting your focus on their interests, you end up succeeding yourself.  John is currently working with his wife on a new book, The Go-Giver Marriage, for spring of 2022 John David Mann: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johndavidmann/ (LinkedIn) John David Mann https://johndavidmann.com/ (Website) John David Mann's latest book: https://www.amazon.com/Steel-Fear-Thriller-Brandon-Webb-ebook/dp/B08P4543LG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=steel+fear+book&qid=1630831356&sr=8-1 (Steel Fear on Amazon )

Becoming a Navy SEAL is hard enough but then becoming a SEAL Sniper and then SEAL Sniper instructor and then being asked to revamp SEAL Sniper training is not something many have on their resumes. Add NY Times Bestselling author, entrepreneur, military advisor, father, pilot, philanthropist and several other things to the list and you have an exciting repeat guest to my show. Brandon Webb recently took a detour from his prolific non-fiction writing and wrote his first fiction novel, Steel Fear. Picture this, serial killer, aircraft carrier at sea... I devoured it in one sitting. We talked about writing differences between non-fiction and fiction, where the premise for the book came from, his travels during COVID with his son and why his son is going to college in Europe versus the USA. And, because I rarely get to speak to someone of Brandon's level when it comes to world events, we also talk about Afghanistan from the perspective of someone who has served there and still is informed.

On this week's podcast episode SOFREP Managing Editor Sean Spoonts sits down and talks with best-selling writer and Steel Fear co-author John David Mann. John Mann is a very prolific writer having penned 28 books on business and leadership. He is also a close collaborator of SOFREP founder Brandon Webb. Starting in 2012 with Red Circle, John and Brandon have worked together on six books. John talks about their latest book, Steel Fear. The book was inspired by a series of molestation incidents, which took place on board the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, during the early days of female sailors being allowed to serve on board U.S. Navy ships. The serial molester was never caught. This gave the idea to Brandon of creating a book about a serial killer on board an aircraft carrier. To accurately represent and convey the image and feel of a U.S. aircraft carrier to the average reader, John, with the help of Sean, had to extensively research aircraft carriers for a number of years. And thanks to Sean's help he also got to visit the USS Lincoln where he received a great welcome. Further, John talks about the creative challenge of giving enough information to the reader while not giving away too much. Fans of mysteries and thrillers will know that this is a difficult balance to strike. Episode in a Tweet: Don't fight fear or try to beat it back; instead, embrace and harness it so you can triumph in even the most adverse situations. Quick Background: I reached out to Brandon after reading "Mastering Fear: A Nacy SEAL's Guide." While reading this fantastic book, I learned that Brandon was a fellow YPOer and knew he had to come on the show. I appreciated Brandon's views on mastering fear. My favorite line from the book is, "Fear can be a set of manacles, holding you prisoner, or it can be a slingshot, catapulting you on to greatness." While I haven't had people shooting at me as Brandon has, I could relate to his stories and appreciated how he overcame loss and tragedy to create a better life for himself. In this episode, Brandon shares his story of leaving home at 16, becoming a Navy SEAL, and losing his first business and marriage at the same time. He has overcome controversy, rebuilt his relationship with his father, and has followed his passion - writing. His media company, SOFREP, is a military-themed digital media company. SOFREP aims to be the "MARVEL" of military content and has already produced several hit online shows, books, and podcasts. It's a blend of video, digital print, podcast, and indie book publisher.

Today I interview the Author, and Entrepreneur John David Mann. In the interview he makes a great point that an Author is also an Entrepreneur. John David Mann is an award-winning author whose books have sold more than 3 million copies in 3 dozen languages, including the bestselling classic THE GO-GIVER with Bob Burg, the New York Times bestselling memoir THE RED CIRCLE with former Navy SEAL Brandon Webb, and the New York Times bestselling parable THE LATTE FACTOR with personal finance legend David Bach. As a teenager, John started his own high school and was an award-winning composer and cellist before turning to careers as an entrepreneur and author. His book TAKE THE LEAD (with former White House staffer Betsy Myers) was named by Tom Peters and the Washington Post “Best Leadership Book of 2011.” His first novel, STEEL FEAR, will be released on July 13; iconic author Lee Child of the Jack Reacher books has called it “sensationally good—an instant classic, maybe an instant legend.” You can find more and get a free book over at www.johndavidmann.comFor my previous podcast click here. Are you building yourself a Job or a BusinessGet your free 1/2 hour consultation by using our contact page.Join the O’Connor Bootstrap Podcast FB group by clicking HEREThanks for listening to the O’Connor Bootstrap podcast, an Atheoz business solutions podcast. You can reach out to me at Isaiah@ballongeventbyraa.com If you find value in my podcasts please subscribe and share.Or if you would like to support my work you can buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/bootstrapPay Pal paypal.me/IocPodOur sponsors:Short courses for busy people Listenable.com Get your 30% discount by using code isaiahoconnor at checkout. John David Mann's journey through life has been varied and diverse - but his purpose has been consistent. In this conversation, you'll discover how John has followed his core purpose to achieve success in seemingly unrelated initiatives. You'll also learn something about becoming a better writer yourself as we discuss John's free gift to everyone, a book titled How to Write Good (Or at Least, Gooder!) - link in show notes. He's evolved from concert cellist at age 9, to award winning composer at age 15, and working with other 17-year-olds to create the high school they wished for - to international best-selling author of over 35 books with more than 3,000,000 books sold. In between, he's been a highly successful entrepreneur and businessman. So, what's the common thread through all of that? His purpose, which is to bring his ideas and passions to life to entertain and educate others. Perhaps his best-known work is the Go-Giver series of books which he's co-authored with Bob Burg. This summer (July 2021) he introduces his first thriller titled Steel Fear which he's co-authored with former Navy Seal Brandon Webb.   Connect with Bill: bill@brandingpillars.com www.brandingpillars.com www.brandingforresults.com IG - @wcellis Facebook - @CoachBillEllis LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/wcellis Book: Women Who Won Connect with John: Contact info: Email: johndavidmann@me.com Website: www.johndavidmann.com Social Media LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/johndavidmann Facebook: facebook.com/johndavidmann FREE book How to Write Good (Or at Least, Gooder!) https://johndavidmann.com/free-ebook/   QUICK EPISODE SUMMARY: Meet John!
