Building Great Leaders with William Branum   A Highly Decorated Retired Navy Seal, Best Selling Author, and TEDx Speaker, William Branum's commitment to serving others has been at the forefront of his entire life.   At an early age, William knew he wanted to be part of a team that would push him to do good and be great in life while still enjoying the outdoors and all that it had to offer.   Finding that goal in the Eagle Scouts, William would move on to join the Navy immediately after graduating high school.   From there, he would go on to graduate from SEAL Training and serve on multiple SEAL Teams before moving on to become a SEAL Sniper instructor and deploying around the globe.   As with too many veterans and soldiers, William suffered from numerous physical injuries and psychological symptoms that started to impact his well-being and quality of life negatively.   Trying many prescription medications to help, William eventually started to "self-medicate" with alcohol to help with the pain and sleep issues.   Knowing that he could not continue this way, once he retired from the military, William would move on to explore a new world of plant-based treatments that he kept hearing about with promising benefits, like CBD.   Determined to maintain his Top-Secret Security clearance from the military, he sought THC-free options of CBD.   Since then, William has not only improved his quality of life but is dedicated to sharing the recovery benefits he has experienced in hopes of helping other Veterans and First Responders find an elite quality of life.   William has made it his mission to share the lessons that he has learned with others as a speaker, author, and business/leadership coach.   Listen in as William and I sit down to discuss how his traumas, challenges, and injuries led him to a path of renewed hope, inspiration, and recovery, his mission to help others do the same, and what has helped him create a life of FEARLESS HAPPYNESS!

Becoming a Navy SEAL is hard enough but then becoming a SEAL Sniper and then SEAL Sniper instructor and then being asked to revamp SEAL Sniper training is not something many have on their resumes. Add NY Times Bestselling author, entrepreneur, military advisor, father, pilot, philanthropist and several other things to the list and you have an exciting repeat guest to my show. Brandon Webb recently took a detour from his prolific non-fiction writing and wrote his first fiction novel, Steel Fear. Picture this, serial killer, aircraft carrier at sea... I devoured it in one sitting. We talked about writing differences between non-fiction and fiction, where the premise for the book came from, his travels during COVID with his son and why his son is going to college in Europe versus the USA. And, because I rarely get to speak to someone of Brandon's level when it comes to world events, we also talk about Afghanistan from the perspective of someone who has served there and still is informed.

Unbreakable. 3:40 - Growing up hunting, trapping, and outside in one of the ‘best times to be a kid in America' making $6K at 9 years old. 9:09 - Training SEAL Snipers. Half arrived never having touched a gun, which is good for shooting. 11:41 - Thom comes from a “horrifically military” family drawing a veteran lineage through to the beginnings of America. 14:33 - How to deal with failing out of West Point and following a dream to become a SEAL rather than following someone else's path. 18:15 - Perseverance in fighting to become a SEAL and failing BUDS four times. 23:45 - “Oh, you failed again,” from family after failing out of BUDS. 28:42 - If you ever failed in what you believe is your dream or been told no and need some inspiration to keep going, listen to this. After having failed out four times from BUDS, Thom would sit in the Admiral's office for his lunch break for TWO years to request authorization to return. He eventually completed Class 207. 32:20 - What is the “Internal Dialogue” and why is it important? When you do difficult things, it's not about how hard the thing is, but how you beat yourself down in the process. 38:32 - First experience in combat is the beginning of the air war in Kosovo doing a rescue as an E-5 SEAL Team 2 Sniper to rescue Chris Hill, the U.S. Ambassador in Macedonia. Described as a ‘comical series of the dumbest things that could possibly happen.' 42:18 - First time seeing the ‘atrocities of war.' 45:07 - What does it mean to be a “breacher” on a SEAL team? 47:08 - First trigger pull and kill in combat was described rather ‘insignificant' and felt like training. 51:07 - Thom's most difficult deployment was in 2009 when he was an E-7 Chief. 1:02:27 - Six MH-47s dropped 200 Special Operations and Special Forces into a single battle in Afghanistan. 1:09:57 - In the last moments that you live, you realize needing and being needed by others when you have nothing left. 1:12:36 - The A-10 is ‘the greatest combat machine in the history of combat machines.' 1:14:20 - How leadership can help operators after having lived through hell and killing 200+ Taliban. 1:31:50 - Sniper-on-Sniper engagement. 1:44:01 - Was there something you carried into combat that meant something to you? 1:44:41 - Would you do it all again?

Jack Carr is quickly becoming one of the biggest names in publishing. His Terminal List series—The Terminal List, True Believer, and Savage Son—are based on his experience as a Navy SEAL sniper, and the first book in the series will soon be made into an Amazon series starring Chris Pratt. My repeat guest, friend, former Navy SEAL, and author of the James Reece series which includes Terminal List, True Believer, and his newest (released today), Savage Son. His name is Jack Carr and I take every opportunity I can to talk with him. And, if you’ve listened to any of our previous episodes, you’ll know exactly why. Jack is one of the most genuine men I know and I’ve always been fascinated with his transition from warrior to author. Today, we talk about putting yourself in the public eye, pursuing something you’ve always been interested in, how military combat compares to civilian life and the life of a writer and forging the path you’ve always wanted to walk. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Emerging opportunities Leveling the playing field Social media Providing value Those who sacrificed Wasted bandwidth The Cold War Who you follow An unassuming demeanor Being kind to people Flipping your switch What’s next The hero’s journey Dealing with bureaucracy  Adapting quickly Standard operating procedures JACK CARR My guest today is the one and only Jack Carr. He spent over 20 years in Naval Special Warfare as a SEAL Sniper, Troop Commander, and a Task Unit Commander leading a team in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s probably a big reason his last three books are so extremely credible – he’s used his decades of combat experience as the foundation for the immense amount of research that goes into his works. Jack is also an avid hunter, a husband, and a father. He’s also a helluva guy as I’ve gotten to know him over the past several years and enjoyed our friendship. And an update since we originally recorded this episode at SHOT Show several months ago, Jack’s book, Terminal List will become a TV Series with Chris Pratt playing James Reece. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. IRON COUNCIL I’ve got to say that regardless of the issues you may be dealing with due to the fallout of Coronavirus, this time truly can be a blessing in disguise if you’re willing to look at it that way. Navy SEAL and New York Times best-selling author Brandon Webb is back to discuss our upcoming Inside the Team Room video show with SEAL snipers, he shares a funny sea story, and goes deep on American politics, the Trump effect, and failed foreign policy. This episode is brought to you by Mack Weldon. Their mission is simple: to make sure all your basics (and beyond) are smartly designed and that shopping is easy and convenient. Mack Weldon was founded because they wanted more out of the basics and always questioned how something so essential could be such a pain in the ass to buy? The frustration was real and their “eureka moment” happened in a department store aisle full of brands that dominated their top drawer. Surrounded by a mind-numbing assortment of underwear and socks, they realized consistent fit and quality became a game of roulette… so they decided to take matters into their own hands. They started from scratch and engineered their own fabric. They made sure the design process was meticulous, so you can count on the fit being the same each time. They built a world class customer experience. The difference is in the details, so they obsessed over every stitch and seam until they’d reached their definition of perfect. Cade Courtley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Boulder, Colorado where he spent much of his early life in the outdoors. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in Business Administration and was commissioned (ROTC) into the United States Navy as an Ensign. A standout from the beginning of his military career as a Naval Officer, Courtley was the Class Leader in his BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL) training.  After 19 months, two Hell Weeks, broken left leg (twice), a broken right leg, and a fractured skull, LT Courtley graduated (CLASS 202) and became a Navy SEAL.  He was then chosen to attend the elite SEAL Sniper school, privilege only given to a select few. His strong background in military Special Operations made him the obvious choice to Host and Produce the Spike TV/Discovery International original series “Surviving Disaster” (2010) that to date has aired in over 150 countries. Author can now be added to Courtley’s list of accomplishments when the folks at Simon & Schuster decided to publish SEAL Survival Guide “A Navy SEAL’s Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster.” (2012) As well as Host of the original TV series “America Unplugged” (2014) Cade is also the founder of Victory Coffee. Favorite Success Quote “If it was easy everyone could do it” “You have to get your ass kicked every once in awhile” Key Points 1. You Need to Constantly be Challenged One of the reasons that Navy SEALs are the best of the best is because they are always being challenged and forced to grow. Obvious from their motto “The only easy day was yesterday” Seals believe that to be the best, you have to push yourself beyond your perceived limits, and they do this every single day of training. Whether or not you want to be a SEAL, the lesson remains the same. Men need challenge, they need adventure, they need to do something other than sit in a damn cubicle. Start challenging yourself today. Get outside, exercise, take a cold shower, give up a bad habit, learn a martial art; do whatever you need to do to get out of your comfort zone and stretch yourself to new limits. 2. You have to Find a Strong Why  At BUD/s there is an attrition rate of nearly 80%, meaning that for every 10 recruits who show up on day one of training, 2 will graduate. Although there doesn’t appear to be much rhyme or reason as to who makes it and who doesn’t physically, the one thing that all successful SEALs have in common is a strong why. You have to have a strong enough reason why you are doing what you are doing to get you through the inevitable shitty times. Whether you are in entrepreneurship, fitness, family or war, you have to have a reason for what you are doing and it has to be strong. 3. Train in Peace so You Don’t Bleed in War One of the core principles of SEAL training is to sweat hard in peace, so you bleed less in war. In layman’s terms, this means that you have to put in the work before the shit hits the fan. You must develop yourself into a grounded, self reliant man before you meet the woman of your dreams, you must save up and be financially intelligent before recession hits, you must work hard at your fitness before some sort of physical disaster arises. Prepare now so that you have peace of mind later. 4. Find Your Passion and Follow It  Life is freaking short. Too damn short to waste in a cubicle doing something that is uninspiring and boring. Find your passion and follow it, because God only knows when your last day is. You might not have another tomorrow and the worst thing in the world would be to get to the other side and think to yourself “Damn I really blew it, did I even matter?” Do yourself a favor. Follow your passion and make your life count.

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Navy Seals Are A Tough Bunch, But How Tough Is Life After Leaving The Navy Seals? My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is with a man who has been on one of the most difficult journeys anyone can take. How to transition from a successful career in the US military to living a successful life as a civilian and top businessman. He served 23 years with distinguished Valor as a Navy SEAL, and during his military career he served in three wars, ultimately leading a team of Navy SEALs into Afghanistan in 2009 where he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, Army Commendation with Valor and his second Combat Action Medal. He was hand-selected to serve as Officer In Charge of the famed SEAL Sniper course from 2009 – 2011, and during his two year tenure, he transformed the sniper curriculum while successfully increasing both graduation numbers and shooting performance test scores. Now of course on Join Up Dots, we are all about the transition to business success. How do you find your thing when for many years you were doing what was expected and not what was truly inside of you. Well he is now the founder and CEO of Adamantine Alliance, a unique leadership and human performance coaching organization. He conducts training throughout the nation developing transformational performance results for various individuals, teams and organizations, using the skills that he had fine tuned over the past 23 years. Taking the seemingly disconnected dots of his previous life, to walk forward with confidence and passion into a new future? So when he was in the military did he start planning for what he was going to do in civilian life?  And when did he realise that his past was actually holding all the answers to his future? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr. Thom Shea. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Thom Shea such as: What he considers to be the five key areas of life and how he manages to balance time between them all. Why he loves nothing more than moving into areas that are unwinnable, due to the lack of competition and the excitement he feels.  Why social media is the only place that leaves him into a position of despair....so tries to keep out of it as much as possible. and lastly…. He hits with the perfect advice of "Dont ever find a way out, find a way through the problem."....how powerful is that?

Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

Brandon Webb is a former SEAL Sniper, who served with the US Navy Seals in Seal Team Three. He’s now a NY Times Best-Selling author, independent digital media mogul, dad, experimental aircraft pilot, and all-around interesting and inspiring man to speak to. You can find him on twitter at @BrandonTWebb .Brandon is no stranger to this podcast. He was a part of an epic two-parter back in episode 61&62. I highly recommend going back and listening to his story. To catch you up to speed, Brandon grew up in California and learned to love the water very early on. When school didn’t really work out for him, Brandon got a job on a dive boat, getting paid to lead scuba diving groups while he was still a teenager.Soon after, he found his way into the US Navy, and quickly became a highly skilled operator. Setting his sights on becoming a US Navy Seal, Brandon faced a lot of adversity as his skill level made him invaluable to have around, and his Commanding Officers reluctant to release him to try out for the SEAL program.Eventually, he made it - and out of a starting class of 200 was one of only 23 to graduate.Quickly finding his place as a sniper, Brandon served all over the world - including in Afghanistan in the very early weeks after 9/11, as part of the military force hunting Bin Laden.Brandon also redeveloped the sniper training program to enormous success, and worked hard to create a learning environment that taught more trainees more successfully than ever before. If you want the long version of that journey, with loads of excellent story telling from Brandon - start by listening to the earlier podcast he and I did, and then perhaps open up some of his excellent books - The Red Circle, Among Heroes, The Power of Thought, The Killing School & his latest book - Total Focus: How to make better decisions under pressure. His books are great reads - clearly written by a man who understands effective teaching techniques, and the power of a great story.Brandon is a gifted writer, and superb story teller - and I couldn’t be more grateful that he gave up an evening out in NY where he lives to spend an hour on a Skype call with me back in Sydney. If you like what you hear - follow Brandon on twitter @BrandonTWebb and let him know you heard him here.
