The issue is that they only use 20-30% of these tools.2023 is going to be all about doing more with less.Technology for many people has just been used to send more emails and create more data. Jake Dunlap takes us from founding Skaled Consulting to his first successful sales hire. And yes, it did take 10 years to get it right.It's great to be a founder led sales company but founder led services delivery is a problem. This was the first major hurdle that Jake encountered in his fledgling sales consulting business and a barrier to scaling. It took years to structure a scalable services delivery model. The first big lesson, young, affordable, full-time staff didn't have the requisite skills to replace Jake and properly service the accounts. It turns out, contract, part time senior team members could deliver.As he grew globally, it was time to expand the sales team. His next big challenge was finding salespeople who could sell even 80% as well as he could. His hires kept failing until he realized it was because the sales process was in his head and needed to be on paper. His second big a ha moment was realizing that selling a product is different from selling a service. Jake only recently cracked this problem and hired an experienced services salesperson.The biggest takeaway that every B2B company needs to understand, customers want everything on their terms and this includes learning about your product. Sales teams can no longer be gatekeepers of the buyer's journey.Highlights:1:57 We are a revenue strategy, operations and enablement company and really what that means, we've got 40 plus people globally and what we do is we help organizations optimize the sales process. 3:13 If you've got a marketing organization that's compensated on one thing and a sales organization that's compensated and there's no overlap, you're not going to have marketing and sales alignment.6:27 When I started my business, I started cold outreach from Crunchbase. I found people that just raised a seed series A, series B and started reaching out cold to CEOs. Hey, you know, chances are you're probably thinking about these challenges. I've faced them multiple times. Let me know if you need help. And sure enough, within the first 45 days, I had a few customers. I've just been figuring it out since then.9:59 I thought everybody had to be full time because if they were contractors, they wouldn't care. And boy, was I wrong.11:57 Over the years we hired a few different sales people and it never worked out. Obviously as a CEO, everything's my fault. I didn't really know the DNA of the person that I needed. Selling a service is much different than selling a product.15:05 I can count on two hands how many founders I've seen that didn't have to figure out the Go-To-Market themselves before hiring the first salespeople.17:18 It's your job to fix these problems no matter what department. You can't outsource fixing your problems.20:36 And so another mistake that I made when I was scaling early is I kept hiring junior people and putting them in roles that they were not set up to be successful in. 22:03 Get it right and then get it off your plate.23:27 Some of our first big deals were through partnerships where the other partner didn't provide the services that we did.26:21 Handing a job off to someone without the training or process is abdicating not delegating.30:40 I didn't ever really define what made a good partner for us. I took probably hundreds of calls with people who were never going to be a fit.35:46 ​​Revenue Operations is really a good synopsis of what we do. It's looking at the end-to-end customer journey and experience.40:03 We live in a world of now on my terms. I want to consume information when I want to. The problem is B2B sales is in the Stone Age right now. This week's guest is not in the circus, but is a master at juggling everything life throws her way. Whether it is running her international franchise, renovating houses, or on a family walk, this week's guest knows all about balance. She has been a full-time parent and entrepreneur since 2012, she has amassed numerous recognitions over a career, Here are just a few:Her company Tippi Toes has been named a Top 500 Franchise, she has hit the Billboard Top 20 Charts, and was #1 on iTunes for Children's Albums for the music she wrote for her dance studies, and on top of it all, was a Shark Tank Alumni - taking a deal with Mark Cuban before deciding she wanted to grow the business on her own. The Master of Franchising and Chief Tippi Toe-er, Megan Reilly is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show.” Megan was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and lived in the same house until she went to college and graduated with a Nutritional Science Degree from Oklahoma State University. Megan started Tippi Toes with her Sister Sarah in 1999, and have continued their mission to make Tippi Toes the best children's dance company on Earth. Sarah and Megan grew the company from a local dance company to an international franchise empire with 35+ Franchise Owners. In 2012, Megan appeared on the hit TV Show Shark Tank, where she was awarded a deal with Mark Cuban but decided to grow their business on their own. From moving to the US at a very young age, to dropping out of college to start a rock band, this week's guest has had quite the journey to being the expert digital transformation and website storyteller he is today. He has driven significant digital brand experience initiatives with companies such as Google, Cisco, Intel, and Citrix just to name a few. Steve Ohanians is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show.” With just a few hundred bucks in his dad's pockets, Steve and his family moved to the U.S from Iran in 1986. His father, who was Steve's hero, was a SVP of an Oil Refinery plant, but studied to become a licensed plumber/contractor upon their arrival to the U.S. While in college, Steve initially decided on studying Aerospace Engineering, but dropped out to start an LA Rock Band called Substance. Over time, he started seeing how many creative opportunities there were on the internet, and slowly started moving into that space. Fast forward, Steve Co-Founded WebEnertia, where it is their mission to Empower B2B Brands by creating impactful and data-driven digital brand and web experiences. Kelsey Moreira is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show.”Kelsey was born in Dallas, Texas, but grew up in Sacramento California. After her parents divorce, and turbulence along with a focus on perfectionism from her mother led to Kelsey's anxiety. At age 14, Kelsey went to her first party where it felt good to drink.Kelsey took on a Technical Marketing Internship for 5 years while attending Arizona State University at Intel. Much like any college student, alcohol consumption continued. Over time, Kelsey began pushing people away due to her drinking until one day, she had the final straw. Kelsey put down the bottle, and as she was not out drinking all hours of the night on the weekends, she began waking up early, and had extra time, leading to her baking. This was the beginning of Doughp. Doughp started selling in San Francisco's Pier 39 and inside Oracle Park before expanding to The Las Vegas Strip, and now ships nationwide through strong e-commerce. When this week's guest started his career as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in 1996, I am sure he could have never imagined what he would accomplish 25 years later. Howard Brown is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show”  Howard grew up in Beverly Hills, and was the son of the Mayor, which had its ups and downs. His first experiences “selling” were walking door to door with his father, meeting the people and asking what they would like to see that he can take care of as the Mayor. To follow in his father's footsteps, he originally went to the University of Arizona to study political science, but started writing speeches and was not fulfilled with that work, so he started volunteering for the homeless. He switched career paths, and went on to become a Licensed Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist. Following his work as a Therapist, he went on to be the Founder/CEO of 4therapy.com Network, Inc. which was acquired by CRC Health Group Inc. where Howard became the VP of Marketing before becoming the Founder/CEO of both Senior Transitions and DemandResults.
