While you did a lot of the heavy lifting in Steps 1-5, Steps 6-10 are still vital parts of the process. In this episode, David discusses the importance of setting clear goals throughout this home-buying process so you can be on your way to home ownership success. Check it out and learn some insider tricks along the way. Here are some takeaways from today's conversation: Episode Highlights: [02:05] How to Get Started With This Step There are two major factors when it comes to setting your goals. We'll call them Goals 1 and Goals 2: When you and your partner decide on unified goals, it makes the rest of the planning process MUCH less stressful and allows you to actually enjoy the journey of buying your first home, either by yourself or together. [04:55] Goals 1 This factor addresses the big picture behind buying a home and sets a strong foundation for Goals 2. When you're figuring out your goals for buying a home, you're not just looking at a page out of the paybook - you're creating the whole freaking personal manual. When you've decided with your professional guides what your best dream scenario is, then you can start home shopping with your personal manual to help you. Remember, some of these are emotional goals, but a lot of them are financial. You need to decide how you're going to set yourself up and your family up for the future. Does this mean buying a home that you'll turn into a rental? Does it mean that you're buying a home that you'll update and resell? These are all important questions you need to ask. [36:55] Goals 2 This step is a lot more straightforward than Goals 1 and we're kind of stepping back for this one. Talk to your professional to get these three numbers: Once you have these three numbers, then you can start planning. Share them with your unicorn team to start setting your goals (this helps you with accountability, too). AND don't forget that setting smaller goals along the way allows you to celebrate your victories because, guess what, buying a home is stressful. In fact, it's one of the most stressful things you'll do in your life. So, taking time to celebrate the small wins will keep up your morale even when the going gets tough.

Have you ever struggled with striking the right balance with your board's involvement in your mission?Encouraging your board to maintain their strategic focus, without veering into operational territories, or dictating the “how”, can be difficult to navigateThe truth is that nonprofits are at their best when leaders can draw out and lean into the best of their boards. Figuring out how to do this is often easier said than done.In this episode of THRIVERS, Tucker and Sarah pull back the curtain on an immersive two-hour session they facilitated with a community nonprofit board, aiming to rekindle their commitment, involvement, and enthusiasm for the cause. This session was specifically tailored to amplify involvement, stir a sense of purpose, and align both old and new members with the organization's overarching vision. They walked the board members through the following steps: Unearthing the deeper motivations behind each board member's decision to join. Reflecting on the board's history to identify and capitalize on their strengths, particularly concerning revenue and tangible impact. An imaginative exercise on impact forecasting—projecting the transformative outcomes envisioned three years ahead. Strategically brainstorming on gathering the necessary resources to turn envisioned impact into reality. Individual board members determine their specific roles, harnessing their unique passions to further the organization's goals. Laying out clear, measurable objectives for the upcoming 6-12 months, establishing both direction and accountability. An introspective wrap-up, allowing board members to appreciate their renewed commitment and the profound nature of their discussions. In this episode, we cover Step Six of the Twelve Steps Codependents' Guide To The Twelve Steps, Melody Beattie STEP 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character (Our Protective Devices) Quote #1 - “ “I hate the language ‘defects of character,'” said Beth… “I believe we act codependently because we're wounded. And telling someone who's wounded he or she is defective or that they've sinned or that they fall short of the mark is abusive.” ”(p98 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #2 - “We become ready to let go of our fear of being controlled- -which for many of us is as great as, or greater than, our desire to control or manipulate another. We let go of allowing others to control us, our lives, or our happiness. We become ready to let go of our caretaking our tendency to focus on the problems, issues, feelings, needs, choices, and lives of an-other; the underlying belief that we are responsible for others. We become willing to be healed from the issues underlying care-taking: weak or inappropriate boundaries or limits; an unclear sense of self, self-responsibility, and the responsibilities of others. We become willing to be healed from the belief that others, or ourselves, are incompetent and cannot take care of us.” (p99 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #3 - P 99-100 - List of Protective Devices (Defects of Character) “We become ready to let go of: Low self-esteem Our self-neglect, and the belief that we aren't responsible for ourselves and cannot take care of ourselves Our desire to have others take care of, or be responsible for, us Self-rejection Self-hatred Lack of self-trust Lack of trust in God, life, and the process of recovery Our trust issues with people inappropriately placed trust, and not trusting when it is appropriate Our addictions Guilt Shame that pervading sense that who we are is not okay We become ready to let go of our inability to own our power, to think, feel, be who we are, take care of ourselves, and enjoy life. We become ready to let go of our difficulty with setting appropriate boundaries and limits with people. We become ready to let go of our reluctance to feel and deal with our feelings: Our difficulty dealing with and expressing anger Our inability to experience joy and love Our negativity, hopelessness, and despair Our fear of joy and love Our fear of commitment A closed mind, or a closed heart Our attraction to unavailable people and dysfunctional systems Our need to be in dysfunctional relationships and systems Our need to be perfect Our abuse from childhood Our need to be victims and our participation in our own victimization” (pp99-100 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #4 - “We become ready to let go of our blocks and barriers to joy and love, even when we cannot name those blocks and barriers. We ask God to take away everything that stands in the way of us having all we deserve in our lives. We ask God to show us the blocks or defects we need to be willing to let go of, and help us become willing to let go of them all.” (p100 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #5 - “Then I lay still for a moment and quietly worked the Sixth Step. “Help me become ready to let go of the fear, the pain, the panic, the lack of trust, and all the rest I've become enmeshed in," I said. "Help me become ready to let go of this pain, instead of trying to make other people stop it or change how I feel." (p105 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie)

In this episode we continue our series on Francis Bacon. Here, we will further explore some of the ideas and concepts concerning the philosophy of science, which we originally introduced and overviewed in the previous episode during our analysis of Bacon's "Art of Discovery". This episode/article (see my Substack for the written version) begins with a discussion of seven key themes in the philosophical approach to science that Bacon advocated. Then, we move on to discuss seven key laws of nature, as outlined by Manly P. Hall in his 1942 article titled "The Seven Great Laws that Rule the World". These represent Hall's framework for seven Summary Laws, which are the "well-proven axioms" that constitute Step Six of Bacon's six-stepped method. After this episode, two more await in this ongoing series on Francis Bacon. These last two articles are really one article split in two. It's called "the Four Masks of Francis Bacon" and delves into Bacon's role in the Shakespeare mystery, among other topics. Spiritual Intelligence In Seven Steps is my new book, released December 2022.This is a short thought on step six, which is about how spiritual intelligence understands the value of virtue over ethics or morality. This preference is because virtues don't primarily tell us what to do, but rather connect must fully with the nature of things. For more on the book see - https://www.markvernon.com/books/spiritual-intelligence-in-seven-steps

Step Six of AA's Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve Step program of recovery is all about the removal of what doesn't work in our lives anymore. Since you have completed Step Four and Five you surely have plenty of things that were revealed to you about what you need to get rid of! So now it's time to allow a Higher Power to cut out these attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors at the source. You get to partner up with your Higher Power and make a firm decision to let go of the character defects and flaws that have been ruling your life and leading to self-destruction. In his book Twelve Step Sponsorship: How It Works, author and sponsor Hamilton B. writes for both sponsors and sponsees about how to work the Steps together. In this excerpt he explores the heart of Step Six: whether we're ready to have our Higher Power take away the defects of character that we identified in Step Four and that we admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being in Step Five.

Our so-called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the first drink.Pg. 24 of The Big Book This tragic situation has already arrived in practically every case long before it is suspected!Pg. 24 of The Big Book Why are choices so important Alcohol, this disease, it took our choices away. You can choose to take them back. You choose to stop digging. You choose to check into rehab. You choose to go to meetings. You choose to get a sponsor. You choose to work the steps. You chose to continue to work the steps. No one else can make this choice for you. You have to. That's why it's so hard, and at the same time that is why it works. The tale of two meetings The first was my Friday Night Men's Beltline, St. Louis Park, MN.The 2nd was Hosanna! Shakopee, MN. If you looking for a church I cannot recommend Hosanna! enough, I go to the one in Shakopee, but they are all great and there are 1000 other great churches out there as well. WHy attending meetings is so powerful I also tell you this: if two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or more gather together as my followers, I am there among them.Matthew 18: 19-20 We can look to the pandemic to show how important social interaction is. For people with mental illness and personally I'll say for alcoholics the pandemic was a huge tipping point. What did I learn at these two meetings? Friday Beltline: Opening reading - 6th step – were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character If we can answer to our satisfaction, we then look at Step Six. We have emphasized willingness as being indispensable. Are we now ready to let God remove from us all the things which we have admitted are objectionable? Can He now take them all – every one? If we still cling to something we will not let go, we ask God to help us be willing.Pg. 76 of The Big Book discussion topics The importance of doing the steps in order. Two participants talked about not wanting to go but being so glad they did. It's easy to pass over the steps that don't have an action. That's not how it works. You have to choose that YOU don't want to drink anymore. You have to truly believe that a Power great than you can restore us to sanity. You have to make a choice to turn your will and lives over to the care of God.For 6 you have to be entirely ready to ask God to remove your defects of character. The reoccurring theme to me was willingness. This is where a lot of people made the choice that they were willing to do this. Which of course is the spiritual principle of step 6.Crazy that willingness comes halfway through the steps.Fake it until you make it stops at step 6. Step Six “Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.” In this step, we come face to face with our distorted perceptions about many things including: readiness a higher power grandiosity and weaponized perfectionism character defects, strengths, survival skills, and limitations Welcome to the Sunday Morning Sobriety Series! Many of you have reached out to me with questions about physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional sobriety. And so I thought that I would add a mini-episode every Sunday morning to explore aspects of sobriety and all the different modalities and practices that we have come to know about healing and recovery from any kind of addiction. I am by no means the final word on sobriety and recovery, but I am happy to share what I know, keep the conversation open, and stay curious and teachable. So whether it is sobriety from drugs, alcohol, or behaviors that are impacting your ability to function like gambling addiction or sex addiction, whether you are curious about mental and emotional sobriety from people places and things, or you identify as an adult child of an alcoholic, addiction, or dysfunctional family, this space on Sunday mornings is for you. Welcome to An Atheist Reads the Big Book of AA Episode 25! In this episode I cover the 6th Step: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. While god isn't necessary, coming to terms with the need to remove attachments to personal traits that are causing harm is. The 6th tradition keeps AA from becoming a sellable brand that, at one point, was almost slapped on educational pamphlets put out by big alcohol. Despite the episode coming out on the 4th I choose to read January 1st from the Daily Stoic to commemorate the start of a new year. Over the years, I've done research on a countless number of creative projects. And whether they've panned out or not, I still get to keep what I learned, which is quite a bonus. Actually, I guess that's the way life is for us. No matter how things turn out, you still get to keep what you learn, if you value it enough. As an example, in the early 80s. I was working on developing a potential film project about the lost continent of Atlantis. There seemed to be a fascinating connection between the fall of Atlantis and the rise of Egypt, so I got involved in exploring some of the mystical understandings of ancient Egypt. These understandings were truly ancient, predating the pyramids by thousands of years and I found them to be quite powerful. I think you'll find two of them to be pretty intriguing. The first one is short and simple, and the second is a little more complex. But to me, they're both still packing quite a punch. The short one is simply this - after you die, you are going to be met by a guide who will take you to a river. And this guide will ask you just two questions. The first one is – What did you learn in this life? And the second is – How much did you help others? Depending on your answers, you will either be taken across the river and be finished with the process of incarnating into earth life. Or, you will be sent back to incarnate again and give the whole thing another try. Supposedly, you may have to go around a few million times before you finally get it right. And that's all there is to it. As I mentioned, it's pretty short and simple and the basic idea is that we came into life for two things. We came here to learn and we came here to help. Again, this is a very ancient concept, but who knows? Maybe it's an oldie but goodie. The second understanding is about something they called the Seven Manifestations of Intelligence on the Earth Plane, but don't be put off by the big title. It's actually fairly simple. It's a little cumbersome in the beginning but it suddenly gets deep and I have gotten a lot out of it over the years. So, using the metaphor of a stairway, it describes the seven different forms of intelligence that exist on earth. And it claims we that each make the journey up the stairway until we get to the top. Each step includes the step before it, but then adds a new element. Because it begins with matter taking form, it doesn't include air or water which are essentially formless. The first step on the stairway is the Mineral Kingdom, where atoms and molecules take shape in physical form. There are about 4,000 different kinds of mineral compounds, like dirt, rocks and crystals, and while they may have an endless variety of forms and shapes, they all have one thing in common – they are not alive. They have organized structure, but they are inanimate objects. They have shape, but not life. The next step is the Plant Kingdom, where the element of life is added to structure, and the process began about 1.5 billion years ago. Currently, there are more than 250,000 different kinds of plants ranging from simple, microscopic ferns to gigantic thousand-year-old trees that are over 52,000 feet tall. Yet in their vast diversity, these quarter million plant forms have one thing in common - they're all alive. In that, they are truly amazing. Most grow towards the light and use photosynthesis to transform light energy into chemical compounds. They reproduce. They give off flowers and fruit, helping to sustain the creatures of the earth. But while all this is amazingly true, they are missing one key element, the element of choice. No matter how wonderful and advanced a plant is, it can't decide to get up and move to a different location. It can grow, but it can't choose where to grow. Which brings us to the next step, the Animal Kingdom. And here is where the critical aspects of choice and will are introduced. While even the most complex plant can't make choices, the simplest animal, the Trichoplax, does it all the time. With only 50,000 cells, even if it's just instinctually reacting to stimuli, it's still constantly exerting the most primitive elements of choice and will. Of course, from that most basic creature, animal intelligence evolved dramatically. The first animals with backbones appeared in the sea about 530 million years ago, and they came onto land about 30 million years later. Then about 63 million years ago, the first primates appeared. While the complex, higher forms of animal life are extremely intelligent, with an enormous array of impulses and feelings, they can also go so far. They do not have the ability to think rational thought. This truly remarkable level of intelligence began in Step Four, with the emergence of the human being. Now the difference between human intelligence and the rest of the Animal Kingdom could easily fill an encyclopedia. But the evolution of language and writing really kicked things into high gear. This astounding nuance of our intelligence allowed us to evolve as a species, rather than just a bunch of individual creatures. Not only could we share and improve our knowledge base, we could also pass it along to subsequent generations, generating constant improvement. This incredible feat is unique to human beings. To see the difference, think about a colony of apes that was living during the dark ages. If you compare them, there would be hardly any differences between those creatures and the way they lived and the apes of today. Now compare the human beings of the dark ages with those of today. While their bodies might be basically the same, that's about it. Everything else is light years apart. And this enormous difference is due to language and writing, which gave us the power to transcend time and place and transmit information across generations. And that's just one element of rational thought. So, the emergence of rational thought in the human being is Step Four on the stairway. The next three steps all involve different levels of human intelligence. The ancients called the fifth step the level of Genius. It goes beyond the linear form of rational thought. The linear form simply means that using logic, we reason in a line, A+ B=C. There are many people who are exceptionally brilliant at linear thought and as a species, it has been the basis of our evolution over all these years. But the genus level is different. In the genius level we have access to our intuition, which is defined in the dictionary as “The ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.” The implications of this are vast. Geniuses are somehow able to perform on a higher level and when watched from the outside, their expertise almost seems effortless. They are in a certain flow. They're in the zone. Of course, this manifests in many different forms. There are geniuses in art and music. There are geniuses in business. There are sports geniuses. A basketball genius senses that a teammate is going to cut to the basket before it even occurs to the teammate, throwing the pass almost in advance of the move. But the genius level isn't only reserved for those who seek to do good. Unfortunately, it cuts both ways. There are evil geniuses as well and they have an uncanny instinct for creating terrible trouble. Indeed, all the major tyrants throughout history, who have created so much misery, were all geniuses in their own way. But their genius was in bringing out the worst elements of the human animal. And sadly, the beat goes on. So, steps four and five, rational thought and genius intuition can be used for good of for bad. Step Six marks the next major turning point. They called it the level of the Prophet and although it sounds like a rather lofty title, it simply refers to a human being that chooses to use its intelligence to serve only the highest good. Regardless of whether it's with logic or intuition, it only serves the light. And this creates an enormously elevating evolution both in terms of the being's feelings and as well as actions. According to the teachings, there is a lofty area of human intelligence where our most noble characteristics reside. This is where we feel peacefully at home and it can be likened to a fertile field filled with an enormous variety of dormant, living seeds. just waiting for the water of our attention to bring them to life. And this is what one on the Sixth level chooses to do. So, at this point, you may be asking yourself – Okay, that's six levels - mineral, plant, animal, human, genius and prophet. You said there were seven. What's the last one? The answer is that the ancient Egyptians called this final step the level of the God Man. For some reason they had very little to say about it other than it referred to “a master soul, one who manifests God completely and perfectly, supremely conscious with no part unconscious.” And that was about it. I guess when you look back on history, there have probably been a bunch of these masters who still have an individual identity, but have surrendered it to the Divine to such a degree that they have become a pure vessel for the Indwelling God Presence within them. But it's probably one of those things where it takes one to know one, which certainly rules me out as an authority. So, that sums up the seven steps of the manifestation of intelligence on the Earth plane according to the Gnostics that allegedly left Atlantis and founded Egypt. But there is one last enticing, yet challenging aspect to it. They claim we are each travelling up this stairway and as we learn how to refine our choices, we will ultimately get to the top of it. For me, it's all too vast to comprehend. I feel like I'm standing before an immense ocean with my trusty thimble in hand, ready to take it all in. But on a less daunting level, because they say that choice is the key to the whole thing, maybe my best move is just to keep looking at the choices I'm making on a day-to-day basis and see if I can find some room for improvement in there. Anyway, it doesn't sound too hard and it certainly can't hurt. Well, that's it for this episode. As always, keep your eyes, mind and heart opened, and let's get together in the next one.
