I love the steps. They have helped me reach a potential that I never knew I had! More than that I love sharing my experience in the fact that it may help you to a better life. I have been studying the steps since I was 18 years old now and I have helped and seen others in this program make it. Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.

Embarking on the eighth step of recovery is akin to opening a door to a room long closed, one filled with the echoes of past wrongs waiting to be righted. It's a journey I've navigated, and in this heart-to-heart, I share the transformative power of making amends. We move beyond the simple act of penning a list, delving into the fabric of healing emotional, spiritual, and mental wounds inflicted, oftentimes, in the throes of addiction. As we traverse this path, I talk about embracing the dual swords of self-love and unconditional love for others, which arm us with the strength to confront and take responsibility for our past actions. This episode is an intimate look into the liberating process of extending sincere apologies, not just for the sake of those we've harmed but for our own soul's unburdening as well.Join me as I shed light on how the act of making amends transcends the reparation of relationships and becomes a quest for personal growth and freedom. Through harrowing tales and insights from a twenty-year battle with addiction, discover how owning up to our mistakes with bravery and honesty is not merely a gesture but a profound expression of respect and love. The episode underscores the importance of inscribing our intentions as a testament to our commitment to change, a step that promises to unshackle us from the chains of past resentments. Engage with the narrative that illustrates how, through the process of making amends, we not only liberate ourselves but also nurture the seeds for a future flourishing with love and reconciliation.Support the Show.Recovery is Beautiful. If you've been listening to David for a while, then this step might come as a bit of a surprise. Over and over again David has warned first-time home buyers about the dangers of perusing the Internet for real estate advice so Step Eight might be confusing to you folks. BUT, stick with him because he explains it all in this episode. Here are some key takeaways from today's conversation: Episode Highlights: [02:18] Get Ready to Research Okay, keep in mind that this episode assumes that you already have a unicorn team set up to help you out. It's important to remember that researching and researching without any professional guidance puts you in the danger zone for misinformation, so it's vital to have your team so you know where to spend your time. So, now it's time to exercise your stalking skills! [06:04] Start Looking for Neighborhoods Your unicorn support team can help you with all the financials and real estate lingo, but only YOU can decide where you're going to feel the most comfortable. So, before your realtor takes you out to look at homes, it's important to research and find some neighborhoods that align with what you're looking for in a community. Now, when it comes to looking for these neighborhoods, you need to be aware of where you're getting your information. Are you on the Chamber of Commerce's website? Is it a place that's trying to sell you something? No matter where you get your info, take the time to cross reference what you find with information from lots of other websites to make sure you're looking at the real best neighborhoods. Do research on safety, schools, and all the other things that will make the neighborhood a winner to you and your family. [18:05] Check Out the Homes Alright, you've looked at neighborhoods and now you have an idea of where you want to look for a home. Now it's time to look at the homes themselves. You hop on Google and start looking at homes for sale, but realtor sites are only going to show you the pictures of the house, not necessarily the entire neighborhood. This is where Google Earth comes in. Get on Street View and start looking at the curb appeal, the neighbors, the walkability of the area, how close you are to a major highway… all those important things you can't get just from an online listing. This is helpful, but the best approach is to talk to your unicorn realtor because they can talk to other realtors who are familiar with the area, they can go check out the neighborhood for you, or they might know some hard-to-find facts about the region. Talk to them! They have your best interests at heart and will make sure you're getting the best info.

STEP 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Quote #1 - “We have been wronged. We have allowed ourselves to be harmed.” (p117 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #2 - “Much of what we're feeling that we call codependency is unearned guilt.” (p119 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #3 - “In what relationships do we need to be able to hold our heads up and allow our hearts to be open and filled with love even if that love comes from a distance and with detachment?” (p120 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #4 - “The name that goes on the third list is our own name. We are usually the people we have harmed the most with our codependency. We are the people we most need to become willing to make amends to. By repressing our feelings and thoughts, neglecting ourselves, criticizing ourselves, shaming ourselves, denying reality, being so frightened, holding ourselves down, pushing ourselves back, believing absolutely untrue things about ourselves, being too harsh, too critical, or too demanding, we have certainly done ourselves wrong. Denying and depriving ourselves is wrong. Not trusting ourselves or listening to ourselves is wrong. Not loving ourselves is wrong. Allowing ourselves to be lied to and deceived to the point that we no longer listen to or heed our instincts is wrong. Thinking we're crazy and bad for surviving is wrong. Holding other people's issues or inappropriate behaviors against ourselves is wrong.” (p120 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #5 - “Allowing ourselves to be abused or mistreated is wrong regardless of the degree of abuse. It is not okay to let ourselves be talked to) or touched inappropriately. … Neglecting ourselves is wrong. Ignoring what we want and need, sometimes to the point that our minds, bodies, and souls rebel by getting sick, is wrong. Neglecting or diminishing our gifts and talents is wrong. … Every behavior we list as codependent is in truth a wrong done toward ourselves. Sometimes it involves a wrong done to someone else, too. We need to be absolutely honest about both. Until we do, we will not have the map for the rest of our recovery. … Allowing others to treat us badly inevitably leads to resentment toward the other person. We need to deal with this resentment, but we also need to be willing to make amends to ourselves for not treating our- ) selves with the respect we deserve.” (p121 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #6 - “Caution: There is no reason to feel guilty or prepare to make an amend, if what we have done is to take care of ourselves.” (p122 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #7 - “I would be entirely justified, I thought, if I withdrew into a cave, became a recluse, and never spoke to any of them again. That place, however justified, is not pleasant. It is not a place of feeling connected with myself or others. It's a place constructed of and decorated with fear.” (p123 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #8 - “All that has come into our lives was designed to prepare us to become who we are and to help us learn the lessons we came here to learn.” (p124 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #9 - “My relationships reflected my unresolved issues and my fears. My relationships reflected my beliefs about what I deserved from love, what I was willing to tolerate.” (p127 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #10 - “Many of us are carrying around residue from relationships that are decades old! We have not yet reconciled and made our peace with our pasts.” (p128 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie)

In this weeks episode Stephanie dives into Letting Go — step 8 and the last one in the process of manifestation. What do you mean letting go!? Inherent in your burning desires are the mechanics for their fulfillment. Meaning, if you can see it, it’s possible. This is all about allowing your faith to lead you. It’s about working the steps and then paying attention to what is being shown to you. It’s about being open to tweaking your plan, and having an outcome that’s even more amazing than you originally desired! Divine intelligence has far more opportunities in store for us than our limited mind can imagine. We must let go to be able to “listen”! Stephanie also explains how letting go does not mean to stop taking action. Action is the foundation of all manifestation. She discusses how each of the preceding steps (when followed!) puts us in a position to let go and receive the divine wisdom available for us. If you’re ready to manifest, apply for an activation session with Stephanie at: www.stephaniefilardi.com/activate

In addition to networking and opportunities to share your elevator pitch, the interview context is the most significant opportunity you will have to tell your personal story. Before the interview be sure to research the organization and prepare some questions that you want to ask. During the interview you might get a "situational" question or a "behavioral" one.  A situational question is exactly what it says, i.e. a hypothetical situation.  When they ask that kind of question, they are looking for leadership.  Use the VALUE framework to describe how you would handle the situation. V - Vision, Al - Alignment of Resources, U - Understand, ensure everyone truly understands what is going on and E - Enactment - make it happen. For the Behavioral questions, use the model STAR.  Situation, Task, Action and Result. And be sure to follow up after the interview with a thank you message. If you want to learn more about interviewing techniques, check out the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT68iezmHnEGood luck.

On this episode, Joel will take you through a high-level overview of his STRATEGY steps to build your strategic plan.  These 8 steps are built on industry best practices, books and courses, and real-life experiences in taking organizations through this process.  Step One:  Set the Foundation.  What are you planning for?  Who is your core planning team?  Step Two:  Take a Look at Your World.  What is happening in the world around us – politically, demographically, economically, etc.?  These issues are going to impact the decision-making for your organization.  However, this is not an opportunity to create excuses on why you can’t raise “x” amount of dollars, or why you can’t hold an event, or do a specific program.  It’s to arm you with the information you need to make the best decision possible for your organization in the mission. Step Three:  Realize Your Future.  What is your vision?  Where do you want to be in 3-5 years?  What does success look like?  Part of this step is drilling down into your mission and the things that are going to drive your day-to-day actions that will support your larger vision.  Determining the organization’s core values are a part of this process as well.  What do you believe in?  Once you have clarity and alignment within your organization, you can then go out and recruit the right people to become staff members, volunteers, and donors. Step Four:  Assess Your Organization.  Perform a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).  Whereas step two is taking an external view, step four includes taking an internal look at your organization through the strengths and weaknesses.  There will be overlap with step two when you start to look at the opportunities and threats because these are external views as well.  However, this allows for some checks and balances between the two steps. Step Five:  Tighten Your Focus.  This step is where you create a balanced scorecard.  Healthy and smart organizations have a balanced scorecard, meaning they aren’t skewed in one direction or another.  The four areas of the scorecard are capacity, internal processes and systems, finance, and client stakeholder satisfaction.  Step Six:  Establish Your Measurement.  If you don’t know where you’re going, then how are you going to get there?  Did you do it or didn’t you do it?  Simple.  For example, if part of your plan includes to create a marketing plan for year one, what actions are you going to take to make that happen?  This is an action you can control.  Establishing the measurement then comes back to did you take this action or not because we know that taking action will lead to growth and impact. Step Seven:  Gather Your Tactics.  Tactics are new or continuing projects and actions designed to improve performance of one or more focus areas.  Tactics reduce performance gaps in the focus area and help achieve results. Step Eight:  Your Plan to Execute.  The worst thing you can do is go through this process and then put it away on a shelf.  This is where a lot of organizations fail in their strategy; they have a plan but then it doesn’t get executed.  Your plan to execute is how you are going to roll out your entire plan and put it into motion.  Remember, this plan does not have to be overcomplicated.  Start with a one-pager, then you can drill down from there into a quarterly, monthly, or weekly plan. As we move through the upcoming episodes, we are going to delve deeper into each step individually and answer any questions you may have.  To submit a question about strategic planning, email joel@kesselstrategies.com. We know being a nonprofit executive is a lonely job and we want you to know that you are not alone as you work toward your mission.  If you like the content of the podcast, as well as the work we do, we invite you to join the Nonprofit Executive Club.  The Executive Club is a monthly training program that gives you the ability to increase your influence through strategic planning and fundraising support.  For more information and to join the Club, go to nonprofitexecutiveclub.com Download the Strategic Plan Toolkit Interested in learning more about Joel Kessel?  Visit kesselstrategies.com to find out how Joel helps growth-minded leaders gain clarity. content: Aug 31, 2018 · podcast: Feb 9, 2019 Audio (MP3): 20180831 - Generous with my humility Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.— Step 8 of Alcoholics Anonymous When I got to the Eighth Step I was kind of disappointed that they use the word “harmed.” I didn’t like it because I didn’t like the thought of me actually hurting people. We get a taste of peace after working the previous steps and then Step Eight comes crashing in like a bowling ball. Announcing we'd done harm. And I felt bad. Like I was supposed to. The other problem I had with Step Eight is that I was pretty timid for much of my life and my drinking. And I felt like others had harmed me just as much, if not more, than I had harmed them. Yeah, I'm sure every alcoholic says that. Anyways, so then I was thinking about Step Seven, and humbly asking God to remove my defects of character. Selfishness was one of my most glaring defects. Selfish with my time. Selfish with my understanding, selfish with my forgiveness. If you hurt me then I had nothing but intolerance for you. But if I want to be rid of that selfishness then I need to practice the opposite as they say. For me to do my part in Step Seven I need to be generous in Step Eight. Generous with my honesty by honestly looking at myself and what I’d done. Generous in my forgiveness for others and what they’d done. Generous with my tolerance. I needed to be generous with my humility. The humility that they call for in Step Seven. And once I found those things the willingness came easier. The willingness to make amends. To them all. If I’m generous then becoming willing to forgive others and to ask for forgiveness, to make those amends wasn’t so hard. #forgiveness #twelvesteps #beagoodperson #diariespodcast RecipeForIceCubes · Aug 31, 2018 at 12:50 pm Very well stated. I was in a cycle of feelings and buried guilt myself. After I made some amends many others became easier and what I received back was mostly positive outcomes. Some people were neutral and others simply had forgotten what I was trying to apologize for. The living amends I have either chosen to have or simply must carry with me due to absenteeism of the the person/people help me daily also. Keep it rolling Friend. One day, hour or minute at a time. CALMING THE STORM: ADDRESSING OUR ANGER AND BITTERNESS TOWARD OTHERS.It is only through attaining the virtue of mourning spoken of in the previous step that placidity and meekness may be achieved. For it is mourning which destroys all anger and any desire to be spoken well of in this life. Placidity, or freedom from anger, begins when one keeps silent even when the heart is moved and provoked. Slowly the virtue develops as one learns to control and silence his thoughts during an angry encounter. Eventually one is able to remain calm even when a tempest rages about him.  Freeing oneself from anger, however, requires great humility and meekness. For to be free from anger necessitates that one be calm, peaceful and loving to a person who has treated him wrongly. This is what makes a monastery such a wonderful training ground in John's eyes. For it is there that one is purified through the constant reproofs and rebuffs of his fellow monks. Such reproof gradually cleanses a soul of this passion.
