Laurence Juber Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson How life-affirming to be back Live with 2x Grammy Winner Laurence Juber. Laurence got us started with his Cobalt Blue. Loved it! What an extraordinary finger-playing guitarist. Gorgeous. We talked the LA fires, the Juber evacuation plan, fortunately not taken to fruition. Animals before guitars, his one-of-a-kind custom shop signature Martin, and a Les Paul were the two that made the cut. Laurence is doing what he can to help, performing at a series of gigs that will donate their proceeds, including Tuesday's big fundraiser at The Canyon Club. Laurence talked with great pride about his two daughters, both achieving big things in the biz. He also spoke with great love and reverence of his wife, Hope, to whom he's been married and a true partner in life and oft in art, for 42 years. It's clear that it's family first and creating for the Jubers. There's no sitting around eating bonbons and watching the tube for this high-functioning family. We talked about Laurence's early days and influences, clarinet his first instrument, finding guitar, and learning to read music in a day. He claims. everyone was doing it. His dream was to be a session player, and he quickly realized it in Abby Road Studios with the likes of George Martin. He gigged around with innumerable bands, quite happy to be doing so, until Denny Laine made that fateful connection. Auditioning with drummer Steve Holley, their lives both changed that day when Paul McCartney asked what they'd be doing for the next few years. A childhood fantasy realized, until a pot bust in Japan. Laurence spoke of his solo work, lots more session work, segueing to TV, which led him to some work with a guy named Snuffy, and ultimately to scoring and composing… writing two musicals with Hope, one, the ever popular, Gilligan's Island: The Musical. There was a Grammy with Sir Paul for Rockestra, the first instrumental Grammy, and his solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy. Laurence has played on innumerable hits, some he's found out about years later reading about them. He's an amazing man with incredible talents. This was a much-needed soul-filling reminder of all that's good and right with the world during troubled and turbulent times. He took us out with guitar perfection. This intensely creative time in McCartney's life saw him writing and recording four studio albums with Wings (Venus and Mars, Wings at the Speed of Sound, London Town and Back to the Egg), the biggest selling British single of the 1970s, 'Mull of Kintyre,' and a solo album packed with electronic experimentalism, McCartney II. During a period of diverse musical evolution, McCartney melded his own melody-driven approach with in-vogue styles like disco, punk and new wave.Away from Wings, McCartney dabbled in music publishing, science fiction writing, semi-autobiographical filmmaking, animation, viral marketing, journalist boycotting, and smuggling cannabis past authority figures with mixed success. McGear, an album Paul co-wrote with his brother, Mike, tops a long list of lesser known projects and collaborations - some of which never saw the light of day - that kept McCartney busy between hit records. For the second half of this decade, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr remained ever present in McCartney's life. Collaborations were mooted, and multi-million dollar offers for one-off reunion concerts were plentiful, but the scars of the Beatles' bitter separation, and their complex, hard to untangle business ties complicated their private and public relationships.THE McCARTNEY LEGACY series is the first truly comprehensive biography, and the most finely detailed exploration of McCartney's creative life beyond the Beatles, ever undertaken. As well as thousands of never-before-seen documents, this volume is informed by hundreds of interviews, including exclusive, in-depth discussions with all four surviving members of Wings Mk. II and Mk. III - Geoff Britton, Joe English, Steve Holley and Laurence Juber - plus countless producers, musicians, recording engineers, designers, and touring staff who worked with McCartney between 1974-80.THE McCARTNEY LEGACY, VOLUME 2 is an in-depth exploration of McCartney's creative and personal life during a period that saw him composing constantly, and recording in Nashville, New Orleans and a boat moored off the Virgin Islands, as well as at Abbey Road in London, a 13th century British castle and his home studios in Scotland and Sussex.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Steve Holley from Paul McCartney & Wings is a great friend and band mate of the late rock legend Denny Laine! On this episode we chat about his time in WINGS, and his relationship with Denny, after all Denny was the guy that helped open the door for him to play in WINGS! Steve tells the story....also we play the new tribute re release track of Time To Hide, the song that Denny wrote, sang and played Harmonica on for Paul McCartney & Wings! Steve plays drums on the new re release of Time To Hide with the band McDonald's Farm! They are Denny's house band from the late 80s and early 90's! A little more on Steve....Stephen Jeffrey Holley was born into a musical family in London, England. His father, Jeffrey, led a Swing band and his mother, Irene was the singer. By age five, Steve was fascinated by drums and his good natured neighbor, who was the drummer in Jeffrey's (his father) band, gave him guidance. At age eleven, Steve formed his first group, The Formula, and entered a talent competition at a local Methodist church. Upon winning the competition, Steve was hooked. Music became his first priority. Former bandmates of the late Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician, Denny Laine, just released a new tribute version of one of Laine's signature songs, Time To Hide, to coincide with what would have been Laine's 80th birthday, October 29. The song, released under the artist name McDonald's Farm, will feature Steve McDonald, Grant Roberts and Laine's former Wings bandmate Steve Holley, with keyboards and production by Graeme Watt at the Seagate Studio Dundee. Through the magic of digital recording technology, it will also feature Laine on harmonica taken from the last time he performed on stage with them. When producing the accompanying music video, the assistance and generosity of Paul McCartney's company, MPL Communications, was invaluable in allowing Graeme Watt who produced the video the use of both photos and video footage of Denny with Paul and Linda McCartney from his time in Wings. This was combined with footage from Denny's later years playing with Steve and Grant at London's Marquee Club and The Old Trout in Windsor (sadly no longer there). To complete Time To Hide, the cover artwork was created by world famous artist Shannon MacDonald. It captures the man, the musician, and the vision of Denny in a spectacular new painting.https://mcdonaldsfarmband.com/homehttps://www.facebook.com/mcdonaldsfarmbandDenny performing Time To Hide on Rock Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nLYtVrUf6Y

(4:19) Steve mentions that he was only 24 years old when he started his agency. (4:58) Steve shares one of the latest actions that they did is they gave out some care packages to the police officers in their area. (8:30) Steve explains that understanding financial stability, the movement of the agencies, and being able to take a few key numbers, are vital. (12:14) Steve shares that the most recent book they bought was almost 100% personal lines agency, but they also found out that there were some bad risks in it. (15:30) Steve mentions one of the tasks that has helped them is doing a proactive annual review with every client. They realized they were spending a lot of time with some accounts that weren’t profitable, and it has kept them from doing a better job for the other clients. We intentionally try to be neighborly and community-oriented, and we try to do it in our own way.” - Steve Holley “If somebody wants to just run the string out on their agency and continue to crank money into their checking account, they can. I think most agency owners, especially if they built the agency themselves, they're probably a little too proud to do that.” - Steve Holley “We talk a whole lot about sales and systems and tools and all that kind of stuff. If you're not thinking about that kind of stuff in your agency, you know that that's the best way for you to add percentage points to your profit every year.” - Steve Holley Resources Mentioned: David Carothers LinkedIn Kyle Houck LinkedIn Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes Steve Holley LinkedIn Holley Insurance HubSpot GoodNotes Vidyard
Sobering Times is an honest and intimate reflection of recovery delivered through his signature brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll. As Goldmine Magazine states “...The Faces and The Rolling Stones with a dash of Otis...It rocks like a b*tch. His vocals are the best of his career...early indications make it seem likely that this will be his career statement.” Following the path he carved with his 2017 album Clean Getaway, Sobering Times (produced by Ricky Byrd and Bob Stander) continues his mission to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. On Sobering Times, Byrd is joined by an all-star cast of musicians: Bob Stander (bass guitar, percussion), Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (keyboards/ accordion/background vocals), Steve Holley (of Wings / Ian Hunter / Joe Cocker, contributed drums to most of the album), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel, drums), Rich Pagano (The Fab Faux, session drummer), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille, drums) and Christine “The Beehive Queen” Ohlman (vocalist, Saturday Night Live band). Additionally, he collaborated with Richie Supa (“I Come Back Stronger”) and Willie Nile, who duets with Byrd on “Recover Me”, in addition to Emily Duff, who co-wrote “Ain’t Gonna Live Like That.” Fittingly, he also recorded a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down”. Byrd chose the Sobering Times release date of September 25 as it’s also the 33rd anniversary of the day he started his sober journey. Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. He dedicates Sobering Times to all of those who struggle with addiction, as well as the recovery warriors who help those who are struggling, those that support a clean and sober lifestyle, and of course, those that still love loud and proud Rock ‘N’ Roll. “As far as third acts go, I couldn't be more grateful for mine,” says Byrd. “I get to use the undeniable power of R'n'R to spread the recovery message to those that are struggling....pretty... pretty... pretty good.”

Data doesn't mean anything unless it changes behaviors. But doing so must be done with care and intention. Too much pressure and you'll create a culture of fear. Too little and you're back in an ecosystem of invisibility. Steve Holley, an indie agency owner in Virginia, explains how he walks that line and finds the right conversation at the right time.
BE TRUE TO YOURSELF, BADFINGER GUITARIST, SINGER AND SONGWRITER JOEY MOLLAND’S FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL IN NEARLY 10 YEARS, IS DUE FROM OMNIVORE RECORDINGS ON OCTOBER 16. Album contains the singles “Rainy Day Man” and “Better Tomorrow”; produced by Mark Hudson (Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne) You can listen to the first two singles at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ir4qcqXLQRraLp8QYZkFo?si=pbp1K3ZoQj6kW7FJ7UWWvg The story of Badfinger is one of rock’s saddest and most tragic tales. But one thing is for certain: the group that practically invented “power pop” was abundantly filled with talent. To have three great songwriters in one band was reminiscent of the group’s original label founders, the Beatles. Badfinger’s singles are still regarded as pop gems some 50 years later: “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue.” Perhaps the most unheralded of the three in Badfinger was Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland. His songwriting talent started to blossom with the group’s finest album, 1971’s Straight Up. Molland contributed five songs to the group’s fourth platter including “I’d Die Babe,” “Sweet Tuesday Morning” and “Suitcase.” Joey continued to play and write as Badfinger motored through the ’70s recording and touring. But great albums like 1974’s Wish You Were Here were met with record company and personal mismanagement. And in 1975, the group’s leader, Pete Ham, tragically passed away. Molland eventually left the group, returned, and left again to launch his own solo career. He’s played in various groups and under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger since 1983. His several solo albums won critical acclaim but nothing could have prepared us for his latest album. Omnivore Recordings is proud to announce the release of Be True to Yourself, a tour de force pop album by Molland co-written with producer Mark Hudson (producer of last year’s Losst And Founnd by Harry Nilsson, also on Omnivore). The album is filled with delicious pop hooks and features musical contributions from Joey’s friends (Julian Lennon, Micky Dolenz, Jason Scheff and Steve Holley). With front and back cover photography by Julian Lennon, this album is a veritable feast for the eyes and ears! So, sit back and “take it all” in from one of the genre’s progenitors ... Be True to Yourself by Joey Molland. Track Listing: 1. This Time 2. Better Tomorrow 3. Rainy Day Man 4. Heaven 5. All I Want To Do 6. I Don’t Wanna Be Done With You 7. All I Do Is Cry 8. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' frontman (1981-1991) and Rock 'n' Roll HOFer (2015) Ricky Byrd joined me from Queens to discuss the release of his new album - Sobering Times - which is another “straight up Rock ‘n’ Roll record with a message that speaks to addiction, recovery, hope and a life beyond your wildest dreams.”On this project, Ricky collaborates with musicians Bob Stander, Jeff Kazee, Steve Holley, Liberty DeVitto, Rich Pagano, Christine (The Beehive Queen) Ohlman and more in supporting the recovery (Rock 'n' Roll) lifestyle. We spoke about his playing days, early gigs in the Catskills, record deals, benefit concerts and the meaning behind his HOF acceptance speech, including whether it was entirely scripted, or not.Keep on rockin' Ricky!Photo credit: Frankie Byrd
This week my guest is GRAMMY-nominated music educator Steve Holley. Steve and I talk about ways we can incorporate more of the music kids listen to every day into our programs – and what can happen when we do. Should we shift our traditional music ed paradigm to be more inclusive of pop music? Is it possible to implement pop music during festival season? Can we really fulfill our curricular responsibilities by using the songs that most of us wouldn't consider to be highly educational? We'll answer all of those questions – and more – in this episode.
Part two of our Interview with Laurence Juber of Wings. We run through his work with Paul and Wings, Back to the Egg, Lympne Castle, "Stop and Smell the Roses", film soundtrack work on "Shanghai Surprise", along with his years as a studio musician in Los Angeles (Belinda Carlisle, Dirty Dancing and more). We then close on his Beatles/Wings guitar albums, and some of the additional projects we can expect from him in the coming years!
A British rock giant and an acclaimed and respected member of New York's acting community walk into a recording studio ... and produce one of 2017's strongest and most compelling albums. This odd couple consists of multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, a founding member of both King Crimson and Foreigner, and guitarist and lead vocalist Ted Zurkowski, co-founder of New York's celebrated Shakespeare ensemble, Frog & Peach, and a long-time member of the world-famous Actors Studio. Together, this unlikely new songwriting team conjured the album Bad Old World under the banner of their quartet, HONEY WEST. Bad Old World is filled with memorable melodies and clever and sophisticated lyrics served on a bed of guitar-driven rock 'n' roll played by top-shelf musicians, including drummer Steve Holley, whose credits include Paul McCartney & Wings and many others, and McDonald's son, Maxwell McDonald, on bass. The album also boasts a guest appearance by Graham Maby (Joe Jackson, They Might Be Giants) on bass ("Brand New Car," "California," "A Girl Called Life"). While it's a modern sound stamped by Ian McDonald's world-class musicianship and production, it also bears an instant familiarity, thanks to a sonic blueprint recalling such Brit-rock titans as The Move and Mott the Hoople. HONEY WEST - named in honor and celebration of the proto-feminist 1960s cult TV spy series starring the ever-alluring Anne Francis - was already up and running when the two came together. For McDonald, discovering the scope and breadth of Zurkowski's talents was the catalyst for wanting to create a musical partnership. Make sure to catch Honey West on their new tour! http://www.honeywestmusic.com/
Managing a brand internationally is a challenging task and one that requires special considerations and tactical expertise. Here to discuss these challenges are two individuals deeply rooted in the global representation of their B2B, international brands. First, we speak with Steve Holley, Director of Global Development at Oakley, and find out how creating partnerships with retailers around the globe, along with proper marketing tools and training, ensures the success of the brand in international markets. In the second half of our show, we talk with Constantin von Boch (Director of Marketing & Sales in the US and Canada for Villeroy & Boch) about bringing this 260+ year old European business into the US.

Founder of indie band The Badge recently released solo album BIRDS OF PARADOX featuring performances by members of Wings, The Byrds, The Who, the Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band and more ! Jeff Slate is a singer/songwriter from New York City. He co-founded the 1980's mod/punk band the Mindless Thinkers, who were mainstays on the Northeastcollege circuit. In the mid-90's he released “The Townshend Tapes”, on which The Who's Pete Townshend acted as Executive Producer, & opened for Sheryl Crow on her “Tuesday Night Music Club” tour. In 1997 he founded the band The Badge, who released four albums and countless singles EPs and live “bootleg” sets and went on to become darlings of the UK/European “mod” scene in the 2000's. In 2010 Jeff released the single “Dreamtime”, which featured Earl Slick & Carlos Alomar “Birds of Paradox” is his first solo album of original material. Jeff has appeared on television & radio numerous times & his songs have appeared in network television shows & major motion pictures.“It began with an act of charity,” Jeff Slate says I was the musical director for a charity event and Steve Holley who used to be the drummer in Wings, was one of the guest performers. We hit it off and I asked him to drum on somesongs of mine in the studio a few weeks later. When we got in there it was exciting. The songs sounded better than I could have ever dreamed. After 15 years making records and playing live with The Badge a new door had opened and I was excited again about making music.”Those initial sessions led to an album's worth of songs with an all-star cast of players, including Holley & former Wings bandmate Laurence Juber, Gary Van Scyoc & Adam Ippolito , Jimmy “Mack ”McEggliott Gene Parsons Simon Townshend Josh Phillips Susie Collins Wayne Cobham &Alex Alexander
