In this edition we are discussing a very prevalent philosophy on university campuses today (as well as in many churches): Postmodernism. My guest is Dr. Scott Smith, Professor of Christian Apologetics at Biola University's Talbot School of Theology. Scott has written quite a few articles and well-received books on this topic and often speaks on postmodernism and its implications in churches, at conferences, and on podcasts like this one.   In this podcast we discuss: What postmodernism is, and how it developed out of modernity Why the theory of nominalism (the belief that there is no reality beyond the words we use for things) is the foundation of postmodernism Why Scott is so interested in this issue as a Christian Examples of where students will encounter postmodern thought Concerns about the rise in “expressive individualism” What we can learn from postmodern thought What we must reject in postmodern thought A practical suggestion for how to converse with someone who embraces postmodernism   Resources mentioned during our conversation: Scott Smith, Truth and the New Kind of Christian: The Emerging Effects of Postmodernism in the Church Scott Smith, Authentically Emergent: In Search of a Truly Progressive Christianity Scott Smith, Exposing the Roots of Constructivism: Nominalism and the Ontology of Knowledge Carl R. Carl R. Trueman (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is professor of biblical and religious studies at Grove City College. He is a contributing editor at First Things, an esteemed church historian, and a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Trueman has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including "Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution" and "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution." We explore the complexities surrounding the concepts of human embodiment, transhumanism, and personal identity in the modern world. Addressing Sophie Lewis' views on pregnancy, the perspective of professional female athletes regarding their bodies, and broader philosophical questions raised by thinkers like Mary Harrington, the speaker dives into the intricate relationship between our physical selves and the roles technology and social media play in shaping our understanding of humanity. Less than five years ago, questions like; What is a Woman? or What Does it Mean to be Human? had obvious and easy answers. But with the advent of artificial intelligence, abortion through birth, technology, the right to euthanasia, and a plethora of genders – defining and understanding the truth that human beings are sacred and made in the image of God got more than complicated! In this keynote address, Dr. Trueman will trace the evolution of the sexual mores and psychological identities that got us to where we are today.Carl Trueman is a Christian theologian and ecclesiastical historian. He was Professor of Historical Theology and Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he held the Paul Woolley Chair of Church History. In 2018 Trueman resigned his position at Westminster to become a full-time undergraduate professor at Grove City College, serving as Full Professor in their Department of Biblical and Religious Studies.Among Trueman's books are John Owen: Reformed Catholic, Renaissance Man, The Creedal Imperative, Fools Rush in Where Monkeys Fear to Tread: Taking Aim at Everyone, and Republocrat: Confessions of a Liberal Conservative. In 2020, Trueman published what is probably his most popular and widely read book: The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution. His most recent book, Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution, is a condensed version of his previous book. Dr. Juli Slattery returns to the podcast to debunk the unhealthy assumptions about marriage, sex, and relationships that many Christians have adopted from modern, secular culture. Rather than embracing these cultural views, we can humbly embrace what God has to say about things like sex, marriage, singleness, and the Church community. As we embrace God's design for these things, we are better equipped to bring truth and love to those who are broken, hurting, and confused.    Are you prepared to make the case for life? Jonathan has been equipping students and parents in biblical worldview, apologetics, and culture for over 16 years, and is passionate about seeing a new generation build a lasting faith. He holds graduate degrees in Christian thought and is currently the Director of Cultural Engagement and Student Discipleship at the Impact 360 Institute and an adjunct professor of apologetics at Biola University. Jonathan has authored several books, including Welcome to College, Questioning the Bible, and Is God Just a Human Invention? His book Welcome to College is the best book I've seen to help students flourish during their university years. So I've invited him to discuss some of the ideas in this book with me today.   In this podcast we discuss: The five ideas defining campus culture* today and how to identify and respond to them (*and broader culture) Understanding “Sexual Revolution 2.0” and how to reframe these issues How some churches are embracing these harmful ideas (and some authors promoting these ideas) “Deconstructing” faith Dealing with the three types of doubt  Examples of students who have flourished due to the principles in Welcome to College  Some problems students face when not understanding the truths in Welcome to College The importance of choosing friends wisely The fallacy of assuming your Christian upbringing prepares you for college The three biblical ways to flourish in college   Resources mentioned during our conversation: Jonathan Morrow, Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower's Guide for the Journey Impact 360 Institute Alisa Childers, Another Gospel? Guest: James Vilade Founder, Keeper of The Game Foundation Guys, just a quick reminder that our next book study begins this week; the first episode will be released on Friday, Feb. 3rd and then for the three remaining Fridays in February. The book we'll be reading and discussing is Dr. Carl Trueman's outstanding cultural examination titled Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution - get your copy today and read along with us! Bio for Coach Vilade: After finishing his successful college baseball career with Baylor University, James Vilade entered the world of coaching and has seen success at every level - from the pros to college and now even at the high school level. He understands that athletics is an avenue for success in life and takes his role and responsibility to mold boys into men very seriously, while having a ton of fun along the way! Coach V is not just a great baseball coach, he's a great friend, and a great mentor for young men. Coach V's primary question for young guys - “What kind of person are you becoming along the way?” One of the main rules for life is how you treat those around you - learn to treat others well. “Baseball is life” - would you buy that t-shirt? Parenting fail - when the sport your child plays becomes more important than their character and the person they are becoming! Common struggle for young men today - “handling the moment.” Don't let the wins take you too high or the losses take you too low! Men generally respond well to other guys calling them up to be better men - surround yourself with men who will do that for you…and you need to do that for others. “Show me your people and I'll show you the man you'll become.” What's the one thing you can tell a young man that will impact his life? “I love you.” T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Huge thank you to Jared Wood for allowing T4M to use his music in our intro and outro selections.

His thoughts on worldview and Law have been published in his Redeeming Law: Christian Calling and the Legal Profession (InterVarsity Press, 2007). In this podcast we discuss: What a worldview is Why it is so important to understand worldviews The benefits of living according to the biblical worldview How Mike discovered the importance of worldviews during college  How worldview issues permeate all university classes Ways Christian students have faltered due to not understanding worldviews (especially related to views of knowledge and truth)  How we are shaped by our culture's worldview, often without knowing it The main worldviews we should understand Understanding worldview as both ideas and loves The relationship of worldview to our actions, wisdom and flourishing Why Christian students struggle so much with the scientific naturalist worldview How to evaluate worldviews and develop a robust and consistent biblical worldview Three simple questions to evalue any worldview claim made in classes or conversations The relationship between spiritual disciplines and living out the biblical worldview Ways your local church can help you develop your worldview Two questions to ask others in your church (or on campus) to find worldview mentors (and eventually mentor others) Why the Christian worldview is superior to all others Ways students can more fully live out their Christian worldview Changing ways students are interacting with Scripture Resources mentioned during our conversation: Albert Wolters, Creation Regained: Biblical Basics for a Reformational Worldview James Sire, The Universe Next Door: A Basic Worldview Catalog Worldview Academy “How to Watch a Movie, Using Top Gun: Maverick as an Example,” College Faith podcast #23 with Drew Trotter James K. Dr. Carl Trueman visits from that “other” Alliance podcast (Mortification of Spin) to discuss his latest book: Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution. More than an abridged version of his 2020 bestseller The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, Trueman's new release offers additional insights not explored in the larger work with a more accessible format designed for all readers. How can an allegiance forged online be “more real” to a young person than the actual community where he lives? When did internal feelings surpass external realities as the way we perceive the world around us? How does technology reinforce that inward focus? For those left wondering how the world arrived at its current state of identity politics, today's conversation will prove most enlightening!  We have a few copies of Strange New World to offer as giveaways, so register to win one! The books are a gift from the publisher Crossway.

Satisfying personal desires has become the definition of the "good life." Follow this notion far enough and it leads to distorted definitions that end in moral chaos. If you want to understand cancel culture, you've got to start here. This episode will explain five outcomes of this approach to life and offer biblical correctives to each one.Resources:"The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution" - Carl R.
