Matthew J. Tuininga is Professor of Christian Ethics and the History of Christianity at Calvin Theological Seminary in Michigan. He is author or editor of several books, including most recently The Wars of the Lord: The Puritan Conquest of America's First People, which has been an important source for this podcast's series on King Philip's War. This episode is useful context not only for our series on King Philip's War, which is still very much in progress, but also many of the other stories we've told about early New England. We talk about the intersection of religion and war in 17th century Massachusetts, the sheer difficulty of colonialism, the evolution of Puritan evangelism in the decades between the landing of Mayflower and King Philip's War, the slow development of racialist thinking, the rise of racial hostility against Indians first among the settlers on the frontier to the distress of the Puritan elites in Boston, the influence, or not, of the younger generation of settlers and Indians on the coming of the war, whether Uncas of the Mohegans was a great and shrewed leader or merely treacherous, whether King Philip's War was inevitable, the "war guilt," or not, of Samuel Mosely and Edward Hutchinson, the wisdom of John Winthrop, Jr., whether King Philip's War was "worth it" from the perspective of the settlers, the influence of the fog of war on Puritan decisions, KPW as counterinsurgency, historical myths of recent vintage that inflate Christian Indian deaths, the validity of Native American oral tradition as an historical source, and the importance of narrative history in getting people excited about history. Psalm 118:1-29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let Israel say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the Lord say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord;     the Lord answered me and set me free. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.     What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is on my side as my helper;     I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord     than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord     than to trust in princes. 10 All nations surrounded me;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 12 They surrounded me like bees;     they went out like a fire among thorns;     in the name of the Lord I cut them off! 13 I was pushed hard, so that I was falling,     but the Lord helped me. 14 The Lord is my strength and my song;     he has become my salvation. 15 Glad songs of salvation     are in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, 16     the right hand of the Lord exalts,     the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!” 17 I shall not die, but I shall live,     and recount the deeds of the Lord. 18 The Lord has disciplined me severely,     but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,     that I may enter through them     and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord;     the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I thank you that you have answered me     and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord‘s doing;     it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made;     let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!     O Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!     We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God,     and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,     up to the horns of the altar! 28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;     you are my God; I will extol you. 29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever!   Key Words: Cornerstone, Rejected, Steadfast Love, Refuge, Surrounded, Salvation, Good Keystone Verse: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. And that makes so much sense in light of Christ's prayer in John 17:20-23 where He prayed for us to have unity that, He said, will result in much greater blessing.

Day1 Weekly Radio Broadcast - Day1 Feeds

The Rev. Scott Hoezee, director of the Center for Excellence in Preaching at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, draws his sermon "Real Food," from the declaration of Jesus that he is the living bread from heaven found in John 6:51-58. Hoezee explores what would have been a shocking statement to those surrounding Jesus. “A lot of the time the sacrament has about all the wonder of making out a grocery list,” he says. “What we need is to be stretched, to be pushed out of our comfort zone, to be shaken out of our complacency so as to see again the radical nature of faith and of the union with Christ it makes possible by the grace of God.”

Dr. Corneilus Plantinga has a few words to say about gratitude, and it may just change your life--physically, spiritually, and emotionally. A habit of gratitude can lower your blood pressure and help you sleep better. But the habit of gratitude also ties us together collectively, in community and in church. When there is genuine appreciation of an act of kindness or a loving word, the memory of that “thank you” is a cushion when disagreement tries to divide us. Gratitude for God's gifts reminds us daily that we can find something good, even in tough situations.A previous guest on The Weight, Dr. Plantinga is Senior Research Fellow at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and president emeritus of Calvin Theological Seminary. What can the writings, speeches, and actions of historical figures teach us? How do we actually learn from them, instead of merely idolizing and romanticizing them? Dr. Danjuma Gibson gives us some clarity on that often difficult task, with his newest book, Through the Eyes of Titans.Dr. Gibson is professor of pastoral theology, care, and counseling at Calvin Theological Seminary. He is a licensed, practicing psychotherapist, and served for 16 years as the senior pastor of a church in Chicago. Through the Eyes of Titans takes the lives of four people crucial to the civil rights movement--Ida B. Wells, Fannie Lou Hamer, Benjamin Mays, and Martin Luther King, Jr.--and offers their experiences as a way for us to really live into our own stories. These four people, despite their incredible accomplishments, were normal people. They weren't superhuman or superheroes, even though we often think about them in those terms. They were normal people who grasped onto the imagination of living into a better world, despite their circumstances, and they used that imagination to propel them forward, even through moments of terror. Dr. Gibson talks Eddie and Chris through this process, and offers each of us something difficult and profound to think about: “We just can't sit back and think about courage. How can we become more courageous in our own environment? You have to go towards that thing that you fear.”Resources:Buy Through the Eyes of Titans

This conversation serves as a continuation of a dialogue that began during our online Symposium on Reformed Moral Theology, held in August 2023. In the symposium's concluding session, Dr. Baugus and Dr. David VanDrunen each presented their perspectives on the role of law in the Gospels, with a particular focus on the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in the Book of Matthew. The session also featured an interactive discussion between the two scholars and T. David Gordon. Dr. Bruce P. Baugus is Professor of Systematic Theology & Apologetics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned a PhD in Philosophical Theology from Calvin Theological Seminary (2009) and served on the faculty of Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, for fourteen years (2008–2022) prior to joining Puritan Reformed. He is also the editor of China's Reforming Churches (RHB, 2014) and has contributed numerous chapters, articles, and papers. Dr. David VanDrunen is Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Westminster Seminary California.

Do you know the biblical story? What role does the Kingdom of God play in that story? How has the modern church in America become culturally irrelevant? What is the modern Western story and how does it absorb many of our salvation stories? And what is the Gospel? These are just some of the questions that Mike and Travis talk about today. Dr. Goheen, drawing on the work of Lesslie Newbigin, takes us into the heart of Western culture showing us that while the Western culture has brought many advances, it has also brought many dangers that are a threat to the propagation of the Christian faith. You will learn more about how we got to his place of having a secular society, the myth of objective secularism, and be able to identify many of the idolatries at work in the West and in the church. Mike also gives us a vision of the story of God's already/but not yet doctrine of the kingdom and our salvation. All of this and more can be found in Mike's book, The Church and Its Vocation: Lesslie Newbigin's Doctrine of Ecclesiology (Baker, 2018).Dr. Mike Goheen began his professional life as a church planter in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and pastor in the Toronto area. We all know that cultures such as those in India have their own pantheon of false gods that we often think of as statues, but idolatry is more than the worship of statues. And demons are not only at work in Majority World cultures. Idolatry and the demonic are just as much at work in our Western culture, they just go by more socially acceptable names. In the West, we have idols of materialism, consumerism, unbridled autonomy, technology, and the like. The demonic work through them just as much as he does through statues and witch doctors. Dr. Goheen, drawing on the work of Lesslie Newbigin, takes us into the heart of Western culture showing us that while the Western culture has brought many advances, it has also brought many dangers that are a threat to the propagation of the Christian faith. Self worth seems like a nice idea. Something we are working on. Something that we might have some day. What if that day is today? Listen in as transracial adoptee and therapist Sally gets right to heart of feeling our value for ourselves.Sally is a licensed clinical social worker, who enjoys working with adults who need support during a variety of life stressors. She understands how challenging it can be to trust someone new, so she does her best to earn your trust by being honest, consistent, following through, and prioritizing what you want to get out of therapy. Once that trust is earned, she enjoys the privilege of joining you in exploring your values, identity, habits that work and ones that don't, skills to manage stressful situations, and responses that help you live a more manageable and enjoyable life. Clients say she is calming, honest, respectful, supportive, and encouraging. She helps people with adjustment to changes in life, anxiety, depression, stress, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, relinquishment and adoption issues, relationship difficulties, and grief. She values discovering the “Why” and shifting the focus to the questions of “How”, “When”, and “What” to help people move toward what is important to them.Working with individuals who are adopted is especially close to Sally's heart because she was adopted at age 5 from Seoul, Korea. She presented on panels and individually at Bethany Christian Services, Korean American Adoptee Adoptive Family Network (KAAN), China Culture Club, Families for International Children (FFIC), Calvin Theological Seminary, Pine Rest's CPE classes for pastors, Adoption Family Support Network (AFSN), and church groups to help educate and walk alongside adoptees, adoption workers, adoptive parents, pastors, foster parents, friends, and family as they learn to understand and work through the 7 Core Issues of Adoption (Deborah N. Silverstein and Sharon Kaplan, 1982). Since she is transracailly adopted, she also understands the challenges of being racially Asian and culturally white, so enjoys helping other transracial adoptees sort through the layers of their identities and belonging. She graduated with her Master's in Social Work from Western Michigan University. Her clinical background includes working with adults at Pine Rest in various areas, such as Spruce Lodge, Mother Baby and Adult Partial Programs, and at the Pine Rest Northeast Clinic as an outpatient therapist for individuals and groups. She was also Executive Director of Ramoth House, an emergency shelter for abused women and children.Email her at ginko1320@gmail.comFind out more at:https://www.instagram.com/sallyvjo/?hl=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sally-verstraete-lmsw-2b7394b4/

In this episode, Jeff and Sid discuss: Taking responsibility for the company early in his career. Managing salary and transitions in a family-owned business. Creating a family-focused priority when running your business. Co-creating your life and generosity with God.   Key Takeaways: When a leader moves on, there are a lot of dynamics and the human elements are just as important as any business elements. Create a home life that is grounding for you. Focus your life on your family and keep your relationships strong and it will help you business. Set the guardrails to let your business work for you, not you working for your business. If you don't set the boundaries it is more likely to consume you. Giving in education is a way to help future generations get a better start and a stronger foundation.   "The best gift to my kids and grandkids is to give them a good start, but not to make it where they are trust fund babies. Think instead, how can I use these funds to empower other places and help my kids see that it is a good thing to do?" —  Sid Jansma Jr. About Sid Jansma Jr.: Sid's oil patch experience began in 1959 working part-time for his dad as a roustabout. So he started at the bottom! Four years at Calvin College resulted in a degree in philosophy and economics, and in a year at U of M, he earned an MBA. He then joined Wolverine Gas and Oil Company (the family business founded by his father in 1948) full-time for the next 49 years. Sid also volunteers for the energy industry at both the state and national levels.  At various times, he's been chairman of the Michigan Oil and Gas Association, chairman of the Independent Petroleum Association of America's Tax Committee, chairman of the Environment and Safety Committee, and on the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Institute. That kind of networking keeps him in touch with others in the industry and up-to-date on what's going on around the country in the oil field and energy in general. Sid has enjoyed serving at church as elder and chairman of the board of trustees at Plymouth Heights Christian Reformed Church. He has served on several other boards, including that of the Russian-American Institute, Calvin Theological Seminary (when in May 2019 he became Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees), ROC Oil in Australia, and other boards. Sid's four children and 14 grandchildren are an endless source of joy to Sid and Cate. And then what about his spare time? He cooks, sails, hunts, fishes, and plays the bagpipes – with absolutely no time left for golf! Connect with Sid Jansma Jr.:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sid-jansma-jr-81232a17/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sid.jansma.jr/   Connect with Jeff Thomas: Website: https://www.arkosglobal.com/Book: https://www.arkosglobal.com/trading-upEmail: jeff.thomas@arkosglobal.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ArkosGlobalAdv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arkosglobal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/arkosglobaladvisorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arkosglobaladvisors/

While in no way putting down any type of church structure, Karl nonetheless points to the many positive results that happen as members of Christ's Body meet in smaller groupings, generally maximizing the spiritual growth and positive impact of each individual.

How do we as Christians have hope in a world that is more secular than ever? With decreasing church attendance, fracturing denominations, and new scandals coming out all the time, what does the future of the Church look like? Today's guest on The Weight, Dr. Cornelius Plantinga, shares some good news with Eddie and Chris--hopeful, bright news that God isn't done moving and shaping the world.Dr. Plantinga is a Senior Research Fellow at the Calving Institute of Christian Worship and the president emeritus of Calvin Theological Seminary. He is an author, a speaker, and a preacher, and his 50-year career has given him a thoughtful, hopeful perspective: while we live in a broken, hurting world, there is a rich history of the church doing good amidst that brokenness, and this period of decline is not the last word.Resources:Find books authored by Dr. Plantinga on Amazon
