“I would suggest that, actually, we've been living in the transhumanist era for 50 years or more. We're half a century into the transhumanist age, and really, it began with the contraceptive pill.”Mary Harrington is a self-described “reactionary feminist,” contributing editor at UnHerd, and author of “Feminism Against Progress.” We sat down together at the Dissident Dialogues Festival to discuss the intersection of progress, individual freedom, technology, and, ultimately, transhumanism.“What that opens up is a whole theoretically infinite spectrum of engineering of ourselves—if you like—of seeing human nature itself as a set of problems to be solved,” says Ms. Harrington. She believes that believing a “progress narrative” leads to the misguided attempt to create heaven on earth.“It just won't matter how often we set out trying to wage war on our own nature. It will just find a way of coming back,” she says.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Well Ron thanks for the donation and topic. The interview you sent me to the Chris Williamson Podcast where he interviews Mary Harrington the author of the book Feminism Against Progress. I'm glad I watched this so that you don't have to. About three minutes in she lets the verbal diarrhea flow from her mouth. She says a lot of stuff we already know that women have always had informal power that was community based. That women had the power of reputation to bring up or destroy people socially as well as control access to information when it comes to her husband and what was going on in the community at large. Mary also says that women have turned themselves into subscription product by going on onlyfans and that the current exploitative situation between the sexes is going to wreck love. I agree because if women start treating men like pay piggies they shouldn't be surprised when men eventually see relationships with whamen as being nothing more than transactional. This hurts women because men would normally do a lot of free stuff for them. But if it becomes pay to play men will do the bare minimum. Mary is a former 2nd and 3rd wave feminist that doesn't believe in progress. She goes down the rabbit hole exploring the relationship between feminism and progress. So far I've brought up some big ideas but I could distil 40 minutes of her words down to 5 minutes. She's like the boring version of Diana Davison. But she does make some valid points that Feminism is a response to material conditions in civilization improving. About 25 mins in it starts to get interesting. That everything changed thanks to contraceptive and 3rd wave digital revolution. I never really looked at feminism was unleashed as technology freed women's time. You have the Suffragettes in the early 20th century once oil and electricity freed up their labor in the home thanks to the 2nd industrial revolution. Which coincides with 1st wave feminism. Then you have the contraceptive revolution which ties into 2nd wave feminism and now 3rd wave feminism with the digital revolution. Now we are about to see feminism's response to the 4th industrial revolution, the internet being the 3rd revolution. In each revolution women have gained power. The first gave them more free time because it freed them from difficult household chores. The second freed them from pregnancy and allowed them to earn money on an equal footing to men and the third one freed them of having to take responsibility for sleeping around in their own social circle. Tinder and dating apps mean they don't have to take accountability for being slutty. Not to mention they got tons of attention from social media they never would have received before. But the 4th revolution is AI and it's going to free men from having to persue women sexually thanks to AI girlfriends and loverbots. That means they will lose much of their attention and sexual exploits they gained from the 3rd revolution. Plus AI is going to take many of their jobs away so that takes them back to the middle of 2nd wave feminism. Feminist author Mary Harrington (@movesincircles) joins the podcast to talk about how technology has shaped the history of women's issues, where she foresees the movement headed, and how to rein in the excesses of an increasingly neoliberal society. In her book "Feminism Against Progress," Harrington presents a provocative thesis challenging the traditional notion of progress, arguing that its current trajectory is disproportionately favoring a privileged minority of women while jeopardizing the rights and autonomy of the majority. Harrington traces the roots of women's liberation not to moral advancement but to the material upheavals of the Industrial Revolution. As society transitions from the industrial era to the age of AI, biotech, and pervasive computing, Harrington contends that technological advancements are blurring natural boundaries and eroding entrenched gender roles. While this shift may seem empowering for a select group of affluent women, it also facilitates the commodification of female bodies, intimacy, and reproductive capacities. Harrington paints a grim picture of a future where economic inequality exacerbates the exploitation of marginalized women, reducing them to mere suppliers of organs and rented wombs for the affluent. In this stark warning, she highlights how progress has ceased to be a boon for the majority of women, emphasizing the urgent need for a feminism that challenges the unchecked pursuit of progress in the 21st century to safeguard women's interests. Today I'm joined by Peter Boghossian to discuss the art of facilitating constructive dialogue in a polarized world. Peter explains Street Epistemology as a way to have civil conversations and help people calibrate their beliefs to the evidence and reasons they hold. He shares his experiences teaching in prisons and how it shaped his understanding of applied epistemology. Our conversation delves into the Socratic method, which is the foundation of street epistemology. Peter describes the five stages of the Socratic method and how it can be used to ask questions and test hypotheses. He emphasizes the importance of calibrated questions and the role of evidence in belief formation.Peter also discusses the challenges of having conversations about emotionally laden topics and dealing with ideological entrenchment. We discuss the concept of preference falsification and how it can hinder productive dialogue. The importance of perspective taking and asking open-ended questions is highlighted as a way to facilitate understanding and challenge deeply held beliefs. We also touch on the application of hostage negotiation techniques in difficult conversations, including those between parents and their children with ROGD (rapid onset gender dysphoria). Peter emphasizes the need for a consistent and principled stance, while also recognizing the importance of setting boundaries and removing toxic individuals from one's life. He shares his motivation for engaging in these conversations, which is rooted in the pursuit of truth and a genuine curiosity about why people believe what they do.Peter Boghossian is a Founding Faculty member at the University of Austin and the Executive Director of National Progress Alliance. Peter has a teaching pedigree spanning more than 25 years that focuses on the Socratic method, scientific skepticism, and critical thinking. Peter's dissertation explored increasing the moral reasoning of prison inmates and aiding their resistance to crime. His most recent book is How to Have Impossible Conversations, and his writing can be found in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, Time Magazine, National Review, and elsewhere. His work is centered on bringing the tools of professional philosophers to a wide variety of contexts to help people think through what seem to be intractable problems.Find Peter online https://linktr.ee/peterboghossianBooks mentioned in this episode: Feminism Against Progress by Mary Harrington How to Have Impossible Conversations by Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay The Gift of Violence by Matt Thornton, Peter Boghossian, et al Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss All books mentioned on this podcast can be found at sometherapist.com/bookshop or by following the embedded Amazon affiliate links. Is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder underdiagnosed or overdiagnosed? Should we think of it as a product of nature, nurture, or a combination of the two? Is it best treated as a developmental condition children will grow out of, or a lifelong neurological difference? Should it be approached differently in boys versus girls? Should society accommodate it like a disability, or should those who have this diagnosis adapt themselves to fit the world? Can it best be remedied by lifestyle, therapy, coaching, or medication? And, if left untreated, are young people at risk of failure-to-launch?In this episode, I had a conversation with Ryan Wexelblatt, also known as the ADHD Dude, about the topic of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and how it is perceived in our society. We delved into the nature versus nurture debate and explored the role of lifestyle factors in ADHD. Ryan argues that while environmental factors can exacerbate symptoms, ADHD itself is not caused by these factors. Ryan highlights the need to differentiate between normal developmental processes and the underlying executive functioning challenges associated with ADHD. Ryan emphasizes the importance of following scientific evidence and understanding that ADHD is a genetic condition with biological markers. We also discussed the concept of time blindness, which refers to the difficulty individuals with ADHD have in perceiving the passage of time, and how this may be influenced by our modern world, with its constant access to technology and lack of natural time markers.Moving on to the specific challenges faced by boys with ADHD, we explored the importance of understanding the differences in how boys develop social skills compared to girls. Ryan highlights the need for a male perspective in the field of ADHD and social skills training, as many existing approaches tend to teach overly formal etiquette that may not resonate with boys. We also address the issue of self-diagnosis and the influence of social media, cautioning against the misinformation and oversimplification that can occur in online discussions about ADHD.Ryan Wexelblatt is a licensed clinical social worker, former school social worker, and father to a son. Ryan founded ADHD Dude, an evidence-informed resource for parents of children diagnosed with ADHD that provides practical strategies to address ADHD-related challenges. He has worked in the field for two decades and is a contributor to ADDitude Magazine. Ryan creates content for the ADHD Dude YouTube channel and the ADHD Dude Membership Site. Ryan is about to launch "Raising Boys On the Spectrum", the first male-specific resource for parents of boys diagnosed with higher-verbal autism. This week Winston speak to journalist Mary Harrington about her new book, Feminism Against Progress.
If chickens can't act as chickens and humans can't act as humans, Western civilization is not making progress. So observes Mary Harrington, contributing editor for Unherd and most recently, author of Feminism Against Progress. While society champions the defying of limits, our natures - as humans, as men, as women - always reemerge. In this episode, Mary and Grant discuss the apocalypse, gender, and eros, asking: What if our idea of the traditional family isn't traditional enough? Can technology suppress human nature? And, what will it take to garner enough enthusiasm to bring new people into this life?
I had a wonderful discussion with writer Mary Harrington about conspiracies, myth and memes, the internet, artificial intelligence, and meaning-making. Mary Harrington is a columnist and editor for UnHerd and runs her own weekly Substack Reactionary Feminist. She's interested in the political and cultural side-effects of globalization, the replacement of class politics by identity politics, the joy of limits, and women's rights in the biotech age, which is the subject of her first book, Feminism Against Progress. Economic necessity is forcing an increasing number of parents to place their young ones is child care, but this shift to constant institutional supervision can have a deep impact. At this year's Colson Center National Conference, we sat down with Dr. Kristin Collier, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Program on Health, Spirituality, and Religion at the University of Michigan Medical School. Kristin shares how her faith has shaped her view of medicine, including how God speaks through the suffering and grief in her vocation to show that He suffers with us. She unpacks the temptation among physicians to see people as machines to fix, and shows us that rich theology helps us to see each person as an image bearer to care for. Mary Harrington, author of Feminism Against Progress, joins host Garrett Snedeker for a discussion of her fascinating new book. Harrington, a British writer, argues that “Progress” no longer benefits the majority of women, and only a feminism that is skeptical of it can truly defend their interests in the twenty-first century. She explains how modern feminism claims to advance “equality” and “freedom” but instead results in sexual dimorphism itself. This shift may benefit the elites, but it only makes it easier to commodify women's bodies, human intimacy, and female reproductive abilities by stripping women of the exact things that make them uniquely women. Harrington, a self-described “reactionary feminist,” is a contributing weekly editor at UnHerd. She was born in the United Kingdom and graduated from Oxford University in 2002. Her work quickly drew attention from the UK's Unherd, and she has since appeared in First Things, American Affairs, the New York Post, The Spectator, the New Statesman, The Times of London, and the Daily Mail. She writes a weekly Substack, Reactionary Feminist, on culture and politics in the cyborg era.
In her new book, Feminism Against Progress, Mary Harrington writes about some trends in second-wave feminism that need to be contested, and argues that this modern “feminism isn't evidence of moral progress in some absolute sense, rather it comprises the aggregate response to ways that women's lives were transformed by the industrial revolution and, crucially, by the departure of work from the home.” She deems her arguments “reactionary feminism.”In this episode, we talk about historical feminism, this more modern feminism of freedom (liberation from all constraints), and what the gospel has to do with it.
Mary Harrington joins the program from England and shows, from her book "Feminism Against Progress," that women's liberation appears to be leading to "a stark... dystopian future."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After decades of embracing radical feminism, why aren't women empowered, fulfilled, and happy? Why can't we even define the uniqueness of womanhood, and defend women's rights against the usurpation of the trans-agenda?Mary Harrington, author of Feminism Against Progress, calls herself a “reactionary feminist” and holds true to the traditional values and unique attributes of biological women. Mary shares her personal experience (changing her name to Sebastian and living in a lesbian commune), and how she found the “progressive” world to be broken and unfulfilling compared to her current role as a wife, mother, and advocate for true women's rights.

Plus, Soros backed prosecutor Kim Foxx isn't running for reelection in Cook County - will this be a repeat of the Chicago mayoral election, where an even more far left progressive wins? Then, a disappointing verdict is reached in the ATF case against gun enthusiasts. “The Pill is a bad metaphysic”: Mary Harrington on says the pill has changed everything – and not really for the better. ---- “Is there something to be said for all of these things which I've been busy trying to dismantle? Because I'd taken it at face value that they were all just bad by definition.” As Mary Harrington writes in her book Feminism Against Progress, she's someone who has “liberalled about as hard as it's possible to liberal”. In her 20s, she pursued maximum sexual freedom, non-hierarchical relationships, and communal forms of living. By the end of that decade, she experienced a “personal crash” that coincided with the global financial crisis. And she found she no longer believed in “progress”. These days, Mary calls herself a reactionary feminist, one who is against “progress”. She disbelieves that we are steadily moving into a better and brighter future of freedom and human perfection. Neither does she believe that self-determination and liberation from every constraint is the path to that utopian goal. This doesn't mean that Mary wants to wind back the clock to a time when women were permanently pregnant and lacked rights as well as the vote. But she argues that “progress” has meant a series of trade-offs in the name of freedom, and she's sceptical that these have delivered unmitigated gains, overall, for women. In this interview with Life & Faith, Mary Harrington explores how the technological shocks of industrialisation and the contraceptive pill have deeply shaped feminism and male-female relationships, and changed everyone's lives – not really for the better. -- Explore: Mary's book Feminism Against Progress An article in First Things where Mary explains “reactionary feminism” and tells a bit about her own story An essay in The UK Spectator – and edited extract from Feminism Against Progress – where Mary makes the pro-sex case against the pill. In Feminism Against Progress, Mary Harrington argues that the industrial-era faith in progress is turning against all but a tiny elite of women. Women's liberation was less the result of human moral progress than an effect of the material consequences of the Industrial Revolution. We've now left the industrial era for the age of AI, biotech and all-pervasive computing. As a result, technology is liberating us from natural limits and embodied sex differences. Although this shift benefits a small class of successful professional women, it also makes it easier to commodify women's bodies, human intimacy and female reproductive abilities. This is a stark warning against a dystopian future whereby poor women become little more than convenient sources of body parts to be harvested and wombs to be rented by the rich. Progress has now stopped benefiting the majority of women, and only a feminism that is sceptical of it can truly defend female interests in the 21st century. President Biden has refused to discuss the debt ceiling with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy until Republicans produce a budget. However, McCarthy has now successfully passed a debt ceiling bill in the House and is urging the President to come to the table with Republicans, who have 'done their job'. Meanwhile, President Biden has announced his run for re-election in 2024, and though many polls show he's currently the lead candidate in the Democratic Party, they also conclude the majority of voters don't want the President to run again, citing his age as a primary concern. Fox News Sunday Host Shannon Bream joins to weigh in on these topics as well as the latest oversight hearing on COVID school closures and China's diplomacy attempts with Ukraine. On May 1st, the Biden administration will roll out a new regulation from the Federal Housing Finance Agency that will impose higher mortgage fees on Americans with good credit to help subsidize low-income buyers with bad credit. The move aimed at housing equity has lawmakers concerned about the impact it will have on homebuyers and the middle class. FOX Business' Gerri Willis joins the podcast to explain how the change was designed to give more Americans the ability to purchase homes, how this change will cause those with good credit scores to soon pay even more on their mortgage payments, and the struggles occurring within the housing market. Connor talks to Reactionary Feminist and contributing editor at UnHerd, Mary Harrington, about her new book, Feminism Against Progress, and how transhumanist luddism is the only means by which we will overthrow the Cyborg Theocracy and win the war on relationships.
The desire for the deathless extension of existence. The desire for autonomy without impediments. The desire for consciousness without bounds, for self-determination without exhaustion, for individual benefits without costs. Desires such as these seem very much at home in the transhumanist project, which seeks to push back against human limits, especially via technological means. But have we rightly assessed the true costs of what many hail as “progress”? Should we continue to try to outwit the boundaries of our humanity, or, moreover, can we actually do so even if we want to?These questions and more like them come to the fore on Church Life Today, as I welcome Mary Harrington to our show. Mary is a contributing editor at UnHerd, and our conversation today follows an event hosted by UnHerd in which Mary debated Elise Bohan on the latter's book Future Superhuman: Our Transhuman Lives in a Make-or-Break Century. Mary's opening remarks were published under the title “Transhumanism is already here” and you can find a link to the video of their debate in this episode's show notes. Church of England rev Jamie Franklin sits down with author and public intellectual Mary Harrington to talk about Mary's new book Feminism Against Progress. Describing herself as a "reactionary feminist" Mary argues that the the direction feminism has taken in more recent years has benefitted nobody except a small group of elite women and that we need to recover the concept of interdependence between men and women. She is a subtle yet outspoken critic of post-humanist thought and the application of the concept of freedom to the human body both in terms of the denial of sex differences and in the reconstruction of the human body along the lines suggested by transgender ideologues. In a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke about the reality of hierarchy and power and how these can be turned for good, the difference between a feminism of freedom and a feminism of interdependence, how we can reconceive the concept of freedom in the context of marriage and family life, the role that Christianity can play in such a reconception, feminism after liberalism, the place of men and the danger of post-Christian patriarchy, internet mentorship and real world relationships, and the question of abortion for reactionary feminism.Timings:00:00-01:51 Welcome and Intro - Feminism Against Progress01:52 -08:28 Critical Theory at the University of Oxford08:29-18:12 Mary's experiments in living and coming to terms with hierarchy18:13-25:59How do you accept power/hierarchy and use it for good?26:00-34:34 Two different types of feminism: interdependence and freedom34:35-36:53 Freedom and the Family36:54-40:19 Interlude40:20-44:29 Motherhood and Liberalism44:30-50:09 Where do you go with feminism after liberal individualism?50:10-01:03:04 Men and Post-Christian Patriarchy01:03:05-01:04:45 Internet Mentors and Real World Relationships01:04:46 Solutions for feminist interdependence and the question of abortionPlease Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). Mary Harrington discusses how the sexual revolution was not the beginning of feminism but the end of it. She traces the history of feminism which was women's aggregate response to the Industrial Revolution. We've been living under an order that calls itself feminist but is really transhumanist or bio-libertarian, the cyborg era, underwritten by tech, which valorizes freedom above all else. The birth control pill was really the first transhumanist technology, followed by gender ideology. The whole world will at some point have to grapple with the cyborg theocracy because it is spreading. She wonders why it is so often women who are the advocates for abolishing biological sex and blames the "laptop class". She also believes social media cucked everybody. Mary Harrington, author of Feminism Against Progress, joins us to discuss her journey to becoming a reactionary feminist, how embracing traditional feminine values in the face of unchecked "progress" is both liberating and essential for women, and how progressive feminism is a detriment to modern society, leading us towards a dystopian future wherein women are commodified.Click here to join the member exclusive portion of my show: https://utm.io/ueSEdWatch the full episode here: https://bit.ly/40VQcuh- - - DailyWire+:Become a DailyWire+ member for 40% off to access the extensive content library including movies, documentaries, shows, and more: https://bit.ly/3BTlA1i Save the Klavan by shopping my merch here: https://bit.ly/3hCo8Kw - - - Socials:Follow on Twitter: https://bit.ly/3B5RI1j Follow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/3D7AzXp Follow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/3TXNt08 Subscribe on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3Rtfifp Learn more about your ad choices. Liberal feminism is predicated on the idea that more is always better. More freedom, more technology, more autonomy. But Tara's guest today says this ethos is dissolving the bonds between men and women, between women and children, and between women and their bodies. And she argues that it's time to rethink feminism. Mary Harrington is a columnist and contributing editor at UnHerd, and a fellow Substacker. Her new book is Feminism Against Progress. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com

Has feminism gone too far? UK writer and author of Feminism Against Progress, Mary Harrington, thinks so. In fact, she thinks we need to go back — way back. Modern technologies, cosmetic surgeries that chase youth eternally, and interventions like the pill have not offered women freedom or empowerment, leading us to wonder if things should have stopped with the first wave. Certainly, Mary believes we should be moving in an entirely different direction. In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with Mary about her anti-futuristic vision of the future. Author Mary Harrington sits down to discuss her new book Feminism Against Progress. She and Bridget discuss how it's always taken for granted that progress is a good thing, but in order to view it that way you need to narrow your focus and ignore everything that doesn't fit into the narrative, and the disturbing fact that slavery exists today and it's never been more profitable. They cover Critical Theory and what it's doing to our society, how it's not possible to be a disinterested observer ever, how you build back your life from major loss and breakdown, the importance of being embodied and what the internet is doing to us, irony poisoning, how to handle the internet and your kids, being a stay at home mom, the complicated moral questions of surrogacy, and how women's interests are not the same across classes even within a single society and the repercussions of how that plays out.Bridget Phetasy admires grit and authenticity. On Walk-Ins Welcome, she talks about the beautiful failures and frightening successes of her own life and the lives of her guests. She doesn't conduct interviews—she has conversations. Conversations with real people about the real struggle and will remind you that we can laugh in pain and cry in joy but there's no greater mistake than hiding from it all. By embracing it all, and celebrating it with the stories she'll bring listeners, she believes that our lowest moments can be the building blocks for our eventual fulfillment.Beyond Parody with Bridget Phetasy is a reader-supported publication. Our guest on this week's #SWYSI is author & Unherd columnist Mary Harrington, author of the new book: Feminism Against Progress. Harrington argues that the industrial-era faith in progress is turning against all but a tiny elite of women. My guest this week is Mary Harrington, contributing editor at UnHerd and author of a new book, Feminism Against Progress, which launches a full frontal attack on the ‘progress' narrative of women's history. We spoke about the meaning behind Mary;'s term ‘reactionary feminism', the Old Left, biotech, body snatching, and why the feminists who embrace dechristianisation are sawing off the branch on which they sit. The Commodification of Everything In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to writer, mother, and modern heretic, Mary Harrington. They talk about the cultural shift in the way people understand sexual relationships and the transactional nature of modern life. The conversation evolves into a discussion about the commodification of our bodies more generally (e.g. national healthcare), why capitalism is not an antidote to authoritarianism, the class politics of scarcity, and the myth of progress. You may have seen her talking about Transhumanism or Tikok on Carte Blanche, or heard her talking about trends on 702 or CNBC Africa where she is a regular expert commentator.
