Interview by Kris PetersAmerican hard rock outfit Winger have been a mainstay in the global music scene for almost 40 years, with their triple-platinum, self-titled debut album spawning hits like Seventeen, Headed for a Heartbreak, and Madalaine. Their sophomore album, In the Heart of the Young, solidified Winger's place in rock history, delivering anthems such as Miles Away and Can't Get Enuff, propelling the band into a select group of artists who have become bigger than the industry that created them.Over the years, Winger has gained significant critical acclaim, with Grammy nominations and widespread recognition for their intricate compositions and electrifying stage presence. Each member of the band has built an impressive resume beyond the project, with Reb Beach becoming a longtime guitarist for Whitesnake, Rod Morgenstein playing with the Dixie Dregs, Paul Taylor collaborating with Alice Cooper, John Roth playing with Giant and Starship, and frontman Kip Winger enjoying a successful solo career and a critically acclaimed career as an orchestral composer which has earned him a Grammy nomination. But for all of Winger's achievements and tales from over the years, there is one mountain left to climb. One world left to conquer. And that world is here. Australia. It's hard to fathom that the original incarnation of Winger has never toured this country, with previous visits being either as Kip performing solo or without the original band lineup. But in honour of their Australian fans and perhaps as a means of ticking off remaining bucket list points, Winger are finally headed this way - with original members - for a run of shows this April to deliver the ultimate send-off, celebrating decades of iconic music in a career spanning musical spectacle.HEAVY had the pleasure of spending time with Kip ahead of the tour, at one stage asking him what it will mean for him to round out his musical career to date with the upcoming shows."The band has got a huge legacy, and it's rare that a band like us would be all original members still," he replied. "It's rare, and we all still really enjoy playing with each other on stage, so it's great. When we played Australia in 2014 it was just spectacular. I mean, the fans are awesome, and I've always wanted to come back with the band. We're very excited about coming, and we've got all the original members, including John Roth. So it's actually going to be better than it would have been before because I don't think John was able to come that time."Another topic we broached was the period in the mid-1990s that saw Winger part ways, largely due to the explosion of grunge, and ask if that movement was as bad for rock music as history has led us to believe."Yeah, it was over like that," Kip sighed. "It was over overnight. When Smells Like Teen Spirit came out MTV dropped all the 80s bands, and MTV was really the big promotion tool. Then you had Beavis and Butthead and all that stuff, which didn't help at all. They were lifting all the grunge bands up and talking trash about all the bands like us, so it was over in a second. It was like, you're playing an arena, and then you're playing a club within a six-month period."In the full interview, Kip discussed Winger's upcoming tour in Japan and Australia with the original line up, emphasizing its significance as a rare opportunity for fans to see the band perform together in their purest form. He highlighted his transition to a classical music career, which adds to the tour's importance, and reflected on the band's legacy and positive experiences from their previous Australian tour in 2014. Kip recounted the band's formation during the peak of rock music in the late 1980s, their rise to fame, and the subsequent decline due to the grunge movement, which led to their disbandment in 1994.He noted his continued musical pursuits through solo projects and the resurgence of interest in Winger's music, keeping the spirit of rock alive. Kip also shared his artistic evolution towards orchestral music, mentioning his classical album and current projects with the Nashville Symphony and more.Australian tour tickets https://www.silverbacktouring.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Sometimes, a concert can be so big that it makes the local news. Like in 2021, when legendary rapper Nas performed with the Nashville Symphony. So how did that watershed moment come to be? Behind the scenes — for some 20 years — the music promotion company Lovenoise was laying the groundwork, carving out “a safe space for Black culture,” and boosting artists of color. “Making Noise” is a joint production by WPLN and WNXP, the sister stations of Nashville Public Radio. Senior Music Writer Jewly Hight reported the stories and hosts the show. The editors and producers are Tony Gonzalez, Justin Barney, and Marquis Munson, with additional editing and guidance by LaTonya Turner, Meribah Knight, Nicole Kemp, Jason Moon Wilkins and Magnolia McKay. Fact-checking by Emily Siner. The logo is by Mack Linebaugh, the accompanying live event on March 3 is directed by Nicole Kemp, and digital support comes from Rachel Iacovone and Carly Butler. The music you heard comes from Blue Dot Sessions and from the creative commons of the Free Music Archive, where we found the artist Holizna and his tracks “Bus Stop,” “Chills,” “Life on Cassette,” and “Busking in the Sunlight.”

SynopsisA color wheel is a circular chart showing the relationship of the colors of the spectrum. It was originally fashioned by Isaac Newton in 1666 and still serves as a useful tool for painters and graphic designers today.Color Wheel also is the title of an orchestral showpiece by American composer Aaron Jay Kernis — a work that was premiered on today's date in 2001 by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the opening concerts of the then-new Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.“The honor of being asked to compose the first music played in this new hall led me to conceive of a ‘miniature' concerto for orchestra which treats it as a large and dynamic body of sound and color,” Kernis said.“I sometimes see colors when I compose,” he confessed, “and the qualities of certain chords do elicit specific sensation in me — for example, I see A-major as bright yellow. I've also been fascinated with Sufi whirling dervishes and their ecstatic spinning. This work may have some ecstatic moments but it is full of tension, continuous energy and drive.”Music Played in Today's ProgramAaron Jay Kernis (b. 1960) Color Wheel; Nashville Symphony; Giancarlo Guerrero, cond. In addition to their new jobs, Will and Carlos have had experiences performing with other major orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, and the London Symphony. Our talk then turns to the future, with Will talking about his work with the Vennture Mouthpiece company, and Carlos about training to become an Alexander Technique teacher.
We continue our conversation about experiences at Juilliard and then move on to their current jobs: Principal Trumpet with the Nashville Symphony and Principal Trombone with the New York City Ballet, and specifically what they experienced in their auditions for those two orchestras.
Trombonist Carlos Jiménez Fernández and Trumpeter William Leathers have already had exceptional lives as musicians, even though they just recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Juilliard. They already have great jobs as principal players (Will with the Nashville Symphony and Carlos with the New York City Ballet) and have also performed with groups such as the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and London Symphony. It was a joy to speak with them about their journey at this early stage of their career. In Part 1, we begin our conversation by talking about how Will and Carlos got to Juilliard. Will started a GoFundMe project in Canada, raising over $70,000 to help pay for his tuition, and Carlos was able to get a scholarship. I ask about their audition to get into the school (an audition where very few people are accepted) and then we talk about their studies with their main teachers, Joe Alessi for Carlos and Chris Martin and Ray Mase for Will.

She also attended yet another shower, possibly the last before her wedding day. I am planning for Shawn's birthday and will share some gift ideas with you. Also, I found the cutest egg chair on a Wal-Mart run. Basically, we're all over the place on this episode, but so happy to be all over the place together and with you. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who share a serious dedication to the craft, a slightly sardonic outlook on life, and deep, incredible catalogs: Neil Hannon and Ben Folds. Neil Hannon is from Northern Ireland, and it's safe to say that he and the band that he's fronted for the past 30 years, the Divine Comedy, are a bit better known in Europe than in the States. Under the Divine Comedy name, Hannon has released a dozen delightfully clever albums, the latest of which is 2019's Office Politics. If you're a newbie and that seems far too much to catch up on, you're in luck: Just this year, the Divine Comedy released a fantastic greatest-hits set called Charmed Life. Hannon has also kept himself busy over the years writing an opera of sorts, as well as composing the theme songs to two beloved British sitcoms, The IT Crowd and Father Ted—the latter show comes up at the beginning of this conversation. Another thing you'll hear Hannon reference in this chat is “Wonka money”—he's referring to the fact that he's composing the music for the upcoming Willy Wonka movie starring Timothee Chalamet. Not too shabby. Here's a little bit of the Divine Comedy's “The Best Mistakes.” Ben Folds, as you'll hear in this conversation, is a huge fan of Hannon and his music. They've played together in the past and they plan to again; you'll even hear them chatting about an orchestral series of concerts that Folds helps produce at the Kennedy Center. Folds, of course, is the piano-playing maestro who led the Ben Folds Five during the ‘90s, then struck out on his own for a vastly varied career in music. In addition to more pop-oriented albums, he's collaborated with everyone from William Shatner to Weird Al; he's written a piano concerto for the Nashville Symphony, released a well received memoir, and started a podcast in which he interviews interesting folks from various walks of life. Another guest who makes us all feel lazy. Damn it, Folds! For this chat, the old friends were in vastly different time zones: Hannon in Ireland and Folds in Australia, the former ready for bed and the latter just waking up. They talk about their admiration for each other—and how they don't really understand current pop music, because they know they're not supposed to. They talk about the downsides of ProTools and the upsides of the pandemic. And you get to hear Ben Folds say the phrase “getting on fucking Talkhouse and kissing ass,” which made my week. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ben Folds and Neil Hannon for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

He was born in Nashville, TN and loves all kinds of music. He has played drums since he was four and has played the guitar and bass since the fifth grade. Before Cancer, Nathan played in percussion ensemble, the jazz band at his school and a rock band with some of his friends. Some of his favorite bands/artists include Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Los Lobos, and Ween. Nathan enjoys seeing live music concerts. While in Nashville, he saw Peter Frampton at the Nashville Symphony and The Who in their 2015 North American Tour. One artist that he would love to sit in with is Beck.
