The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children and gives a peek behind the scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community. This episode will read All About Me During the Quarantine by Taneka Ferrell. ✅ ABOUT THE STORY: In such a difficult time in the world, we need children to know that a bright future still awaits them. All About Me During the Quarantine helps parents and teachers start positive and healthy conversations that dreams await to be pursued and to come true. If your little one wants to be a chef, a comedian, a basketball star, a dancer, a celebrity hairstylist — they indeed can! Surely, they can be anything they want to be! Mom and author Taneka Ferrell found inspiration from her own family in the middle of a series of lockdowns. "My nieces, nephews and son have all been an inspiration to me. They can make other kids who read this book be happy and just be able to have something for them to open up and say, "that's neat". Having that drive and passion, we want as parents to support them from a young age. Just imagine what they'll be in the next few years." ✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Taneka Ferrell is a Maryland resident and product of the Prince Georges County (PGC) schools system, Oxon Hill High School graduate, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. As a young black woman growing up in Maryland, Taneka does not look like what she has been through. Her story, testimony, and energy makes each person she graces her presence realize and understand that they do not have to allow their circumstances to become their blueprint for life. But rather, it can be a stepping stone for how to rise above, be fearfully and wonderfully made in God's image and give back no matter how much we may have lacked or not experienced in our youth. It's no secret that athletes make great entrepreneurs. The skills we acquired during our years of competition prepared us for the intense level of discipline, personal development, and follow-through that it takes to win in entrepreneurship. "Athlete to Entrepreneur" is an online event for athletes to come together and share their entrepreneurial journeys with the world. The goal is to educate, impact, and inspire current and former athletes to think outside of the box, become change agents for the communities they serve, and carve out a new lane for themselves post-sport. Taneka Lewis is a former collegiate basketball player, computer engineer, physicist, author and blogger. She is also a mental health advocate, which is motivated by her experiences with post-athlete depression and other life challenges. Taneka and I also discussed the lack of diversity in the classes she took for her degrees as well as in her field now. Inclusion and diversity are so important in the classroom and workforce, and we are slowly yet surely seeing changes with women and POC founding and running more businesses. She began to study Islam under the Nation of Islam to find that purpose. Not finding it there she went on a quest that brought her the Christ Jesus. She has been through some stuff but now is creating her lifestyle in Christ that gives her strength. In the third part of the series, Izzy is joined by Jet (@jetflychris) and welcomes back Taneka (@tee.seals) to discuss their take on relationships. Several intense questions are asked about what everybody expects from the opposite sex. The episode asks questions that will leave the audience wondering whether they have expectations from the opposite sex, or deal breakers. The three crack a lot of jokes while still dropping gems that include "what if" scenarios, asking if women are too independent these days, and discussing which gender hates being single more. This is the first episode where Izzy is put on the hot seat on his own show, who even thought that was possible? *I DO NO OWN ANY OF THE CLIPS USED*
I first met Johnny Caldwell and Taneka Reaves, known in the biz as The Cocktail Bandits, more than four years ago in Charleston at a tequila event, of course. Since then, we’ve sipped and cheered glasses many times in Charleston and beyond. They came out to cheer me on when I was nominated for best food podcast at The Saveur Blog Awards a couple of years ago. I’ve watched with awe as they have become a force in the national cocktail scene, soaking up knowledge about spirit history and mixology while making a place for more diversity in the spirits world. Last year they published a book about the Charleston beverage scene, the first cocktail book produced in this country by African-American women. They promote female empowerment through advocacy for the food and beverage community, from a feminine, urban perspective, and they do it through straight hussle to show up and be present, interacting both online and in person. There’s a lot more behind their story than swizzle sticks and slices of lemon
