This episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast sees Rob speaking to Damian Harper, Mark Jamison and Ted Rath. This episode was recorded in the summer of 2021 as a Live roundtable. But it was that good that we had to release it as a podcast. Anyone who is interested in deceleration will know the name Damian Harper. And its Damian who kicks off this chat with a detailed dive into what the research says about the importance of deceleration. Mark then gives us his thoughts on how we test it based on some of Damian's work. This area is super interesting as its been so under utilised but with advances in technology it can be a relatively simple process. To conclude part 1, Ted gives us his thoughts on what qualities are needed to enhance deceleration ability and the need for developing eccentric strength. Part 2 is all about gym based and on-field based interventions to improve deceleration ability. Ted takes the gym based interventions whereas Damian and Mark attack the on-field interventions. They answer the crucial questions, "how can we coach our athletes into more effective deceleration positions?" If you're interested in learning more about the growing area of deceleration, check out this episode. Main talking points - What does the research say about the importance of training deceleration? Notes: Do your habits today align with your goals of tomorrow? What is your daily process? If you set big goals, what actions are you taking to get closer to achieving them each day? The greatest players LOVED being coached. They demand it and are seeking it. Do you? Are you seeking out a coach? Are you asking for it? What processes do you have in place to get feedback, learn, and get better? How to Lead Others: Most of us want 3 things To feel APPRECIATED in their environment. To feel PROTECTED by those in charge of them. To feel that they are a part of something BIGGER than themselves. Do this through connecting. To connect, you must have trust. To build trust, you must be vulnerable. Once you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you can earn trust. Be an active listener. Listen to connect instead of listening to reply. The greatness of quarterback, Jalen Hurts: Sets high standards for himself: The standard is the standard Loves being coached Constantly works on his craft Stoic: He's calm, consistent, and poised. Ted was part of the decision-making team when deciding the next head coach for The Eagles: Nick Sirianni's five core values: connecting, competition, accountability, intelligence, and fundamentals – connecting is always first. Getting Fired: "It was my 7th year with the team. We had gone to the playoffs the prior year 2014 in Jim Caldwell's first year. In 2015 we started out rough at 1-7 through the first half of the season. We played in London that year, and before leaving for the airport we fired our OC, OL, and asst OL coach. Through the staff shuffle, I ended up helping coach Special Teams during the second half of the season. Our Equipment Manager told me during practice on the first day in London as they were setting up my headset. We ended up finishing strong and going 7-1 in the second half of the season (our only loss was the Thursday night hail mary that Aaron Rodgers completed to Richard Rodgers). After we came back home from London we fired our team President and GM. At the end of the year, the new GM told me he had to let me go to make it look like they were making significant changes in the media." "The climb is about one step at a time." The obstacle is the way: Discipline and perception let you clearly see the advantage and the proper course of action in every situation, without the pestilence of panic or fear. Control your emotions and keep an even keel. How you react to every situation is YOUR CHOICE. Find the opportunity in the obstacle. Self-Discipline must be combined with logic while working through obstacles. Be honest with your self-assessment. Failure is part of all successful team and individual journeys: You don't need to fear it, you just have to refuse to let it beat you We either WIN or LEARN Fail Forward Trials in life will not define you... How you respond to them will. Persistence helps you get what you want, but CONSISTENCY helps you keep what you have earned. Consistency creates trust.

Philadelphia Eagles Director of Sports Performance, Ted Rath, joins me on this episode. Coach Rath has been coaching in the NFL most of his career working with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, and most recently with the L.A. Rams. We start off by talking about this importance of data collection and how it has changed over time. Ted also goes into talking about how technology helps make some decisions in his programming, and how they can progress during a long 16 week season where they are looking to PEAK every Sunday, and where he can fit his super compensation effects. Coach Rath touches base on what pieces of technology he believes to be the best to use, and also what internal measures he utilizes and believes to be the best. We chat a bit about GymAware units as well, and tracking change over time. I personally love to utilize the GymAware for all the same reason Coach Rath does, and I believe that he hits the nail on the head with quantifying “work sets” and athlete improvements based on power outputs. DATA CONFIRMS THE COACHES EYE – IT IS NOT THE COACHES EYE During the middle of the episode, Coach Rath and I talk about how, in the game of American Football, the old adage of “hey you’re a linebacker you need to be 'X' weight”, and talk about how certain athletes perform optimally at a certain body weight based on their frame and body composition. Athletes come out of the NFL Combine every year, Coach Rath talks about how his system of “body typing” for placing athletes in generalized categories in order to develop the most efficient player for on field performance. Franchise players are the cornerstone to an NFL team’s success and Coach Rath has worked with many players of this stature. We get into the talk of how to keep these guys healthy and on the field all the time and what happens when a franchise player becomes a chronic injured guy, and how programming and thought process changes. Older athletes (veterans in their 30s) versus younger athletes (rookies, guys in their mid 20’s), very different type of training for these two age groups, and Ted attacks how your thought process should shift attention to other key areas such as: joint degradation, spinal stenosis, disc degradation. To wrap things up, Coach Rath sheds light on how the COVID pandemic could probably have made a larger impact on athlete performance and nutritional digestion. Nobody is in their “normal” routines and how a lot of things that were once at our immediate disposal are not there anymore and could have an effect on how the stomach digests and absorbs certain nutrients they have not consumed in over a couple of months.
