Interview with Jon TorineFrom Momouth County, NJ Jon always loved sports. But what he found was he loved the strength and conditioning aspect of the sport more. It was at Springfield College where a baseball coach got him in touch with a strength coach in the NFL. Jon got an internship with the Buffalo Bills and eventually a full-time job.First the Buffalo Bills, then the head strength and conditioning coach with the Indianapolis Colts. Jon Torine spent most of his career in the NFL, first as a strength and conditioning coach for 17 years and then working with the NFL Players Trust Program to help former players transition to the next phase of their careers. After the NFL Jon went out to tackle youth sports. Sports should be fun for children, not stressful. As Jon worked to educate and inform the town around the physical and emotional pitfalls of sports specialization, he soon found another way to pursue his passion. Now Jon is an owner of i9 Sports, a franchise which focuses on fun for the kids and convenience for the parents. Its mission is to help kids succeed in life though sports LinkedIn:(3) Jon Torine | LinkedInEmail:Jon.Torine@i9sports.comi9 Sports:Youth Sports Franchise — Start Your Own Sports Leagues with i9 Sports (i9sportsfranchise.com)Every Kids Sports:Nonprofit providing youth sports grants | Every Kid SportsEric Reyes: Host of Hey Coach! Buddy Morris is a force of nature this is an unvarnished conversation with colorful language abound. Buddy holds nothing back in his honest approach to four decades of sports development. In this particular conversation, I allowed coach to dive into his stream of consciousness and take me along for the ride. We discussed athletic development at the professional level and the importance of variation. He discusses the value of sprinting above all other modalities especially in a year without a lot of contact with NFL professionals. He explains his worry about personal trainers and therapists who might not be entirely altruistic in their motives when dealing with multi-million dollar athletes. We discuss what coach Morris has learned from the likes of Dan Pfaff and Louie Simmons. He details numerous stories about the recovery process, rehab, and work-to-rest ratios for the best path to sport readiness. I thoroughly enjoy my time with Buddy. Some of the points we talk about are how he got started in his career, what it's like to work in the NFL, how training differs between on and off-season, how training an NFL athlete is the same and different as "normal" people, and some of the challenges he faces being a science focused coach in an environment dominated by old-school thinking. Innovate and keep an open mind. Coach Joe Kenn is one of the preeminent strength and conditioning coaches in all of sport and is widely known for being the creator of The Tier System. The founder of Big House Power, Joe has been the recipient of the NFL Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year, NSCA Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year and numerous other awards and titles earned along the way that would take up the entire show notes if I let them. Coach Kenn was most recently the strength and conditioning coach for the Carolina Panthers and today is VP of Performance Education at Dynamic Fitness Strength. In today's show Coach Kenn sits down for a fun wide ranging conversation. He shares the untold story about the writing of his first book and why the initial pushback on his innovative approach to sport specific training almost stopped “The Coach's Strength Training Playbook” from happening. Recounts how growing up in a diverse part of Long Island may have contributed to one of his greatest gifts as a coach. Reflects on the important relationships and coaching experiences that shaped his approach to coaching. In the latter half of the episode Coach Kenn provides an explanation of The Tier System and why he believes 30 years later it has stood the test of time. We talk through how other possible programs and methodologies can be applied within the Tier System. His philosophy on Split vs. Total Body Training for sport. Coach Kenn discusses the criteria he uses when discerning the best exercises for individual athletes. He offers his perspective on the power of a mantra and while above all else it's important to focus on being effective and efficient. WHO?... DANIEL JONES! Recap of Week 3 + Tyler's Take on NFL Strength of Schedule (Ep. 6 Part 2) by Down Set Mic!
In this episode, I sit down with Carolina Panthers Head Strength Coach Joe Kenn for the second time. Known simply as "House" to players, Joe Kenn's goal as the Panthers' strength and conditioning coach is to protect and produce: protect the athletes' body armor and produce athletic based results. He is entering his ninth season with Carolina. He employs a holistic and integrated philosophy in his comprehensive training plan that utilizes strength training, explosive development, high-intensity interval training, and performance-based nutrition. It is a structured approach that enhances players' physical attributes. An accomplished strength and conditioning coach, Kenn's program was instrumental in Carolina's recent run of success with four playoffs appearances since 2013, tied for the second-most playoff berths in the NFC over that six-year period. In that span, the Panthers recorded 58 wins, tied for the most in any six-year period in franchise history, and fifth-most in the NFL. He was instrumental in Carolina’s 15-1 season in 2015 and trip to Super Bowl 50. For his efforts, Kenn was named the 2015 NFL Strength Coach of the Year in a vote by his peers. In 2013, Kenn earned the inaugural Professional Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year award from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He won the collegiate version of the NSCA award at Arizona State in 2002. Thomas Stallworth is in his first season as the Giants’ assistant strength and conditioning coach. He shares his thoughts on: 1. What would you tell a young athlete (high school), with NFL aspirations how to approach the strength training process? 2. What aspects, outside of football do you think a young athlete should try and master as they work toward an NFL career? 3. What are your top 3 pieces of advice for the strength coach wanting to work at the NFL level? What is the major difference between collegiate strength & conditioning and NFL? 4. How do you approach leadership as a S & C Coach at the NFL level? Stallworth came to the Giants from Western Kentucky University, where he spent the 2017 season as the football program’s head strength and conditioning coach. Prior to his stint at WKU, Stallworth spent one season as the head strength and conditioning coach at Fresno State University. Prior to Fresno State, Stallworth spent time at Texas Tech University after a season at North Carolina State. Stallworth was the associate strength and condition- ing coach for three seasons at Mississippi State. That included the best season in the program in 2014, when the Bulldogs rose to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll behind the play of quarterback Dak Prescott and earned their first Orange Bowl berth since 1941. While Stallworth was at Mississippi State University, 12 Bulldogs were drafted into the NFL, seven of them in the first three rounds, including 2012 Jim Thorpe Award winner Johnathan Banks and 2016 NFL second-team All-Pro Bernardick McKinney. From the 2015 N.C. State team Stallworth worked with, three players were drafted, including quarterback Jacoby Brissett and defensive tackle B.J. Hill, one of the Giants’ third-round choices this year. Stallworth previously worked as the head strength coach at FCS schools Grambling State (2008-11) and South Carolina State University (2004-08). One of his players at Grambling State was former Giants tight end Larry Donnell. Stallworth was a linebacker at the University of Tennessee from 1997-2001, a period in which the Volunteers played in five bowl games and won the 1998 national championship, 1997 and 1998 SEC championships. Stallworth earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Tennessee in 2001 before earning his masters from the school in sports administration in 2004. He is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in sport psychology and sports science from the University of the Rockies. Stallworth is married to the former Ingrid Garvin, and the couple has two children, India and Thomas III.
