Cinematographer Greg Middleton's intention in his work is never to make viewers think, “Oh wow, cool shot!” He wants them to be able to experience the movies or television series he shoots without drawing attention to the cinematography or lighting. For him, the art of cinematography is about making illusions, and convincing audiences that they are actually somewhere else. Greg was excited to work on episodes 1, 3, 5, and 6 of the series Moon Knight on Disney+ because it's more of a personal and emotional journey for the character Marc/Stephen, rather than just the action and the superhero elements. He didn't know anyone involved in the project before he was hired, which is unusual, but director Mohamed Diab liked Greg's Emmy-winning work on HBO's Watchmen, particularly episode 6: “This Extraordinary Being” which dives into the past of Hooded Justice. For Moon Knight, episode 5 needed someone who could handle seamless transitions through multiple scenes in Marc/Stephen's past life. Greg also had experience from Game of Thrones working quickly in multiple foreign locations with large cast and crews. There were many challenges for shooting a show like Moon Knight- location work, virtual sets, twinning, and animated characters interacting with real characters. Greg also had to play a lot with reflections and light. Because Marc/Stephen has a form of mental illness called dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder), his personalities often interact through reflective surfaces. Greg and director Mohamed Diab discussed and did extensive testing to figure out how they would make the reflections and successfully shoot them. Greg would move the camera, shoot the reflection one way, then later shoot it again to match it, or do a nodal camera pan, so that the perspective of the character doesn't really change, but the reflection does. For the museum bathroom scene with infinity mirrors, the visual effects team needed to paint out the camera and boom mic later. Because actor Oscar Issac was playing two different characters with different body language and accents, it was easier for him to play first one character and then the other, and he didn't usually switch quickly from one character to another. For Marc/Stephen's interactions with the god Khonshu, they used an actor in costume, adding a pole to make him seem 9 feet tall. Greg also used a very real-looking maquette of Khonshu's head to establish the proper lighting for the visual effects team to reference. The sets also incorporated small hints of Marc/Stephen's reality and dream world, so that deciding what is real is always in question. **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS** Welcome to the episode that no one asked for but we decided to record anyway! It's no secret that Lindelof's 2019 Watchmen show packs a punch. After reviewing the last week's discussion on Film is Lit, we decided that there is simply too much to discuss in Episode 6 to lump in with the series' final episodes. Please enjoy an in-depth semiotic analysis of “This Extraordinary Being” (directed by Stephen Williams), incidentally Laura's favorite installment! Emmy Award-winning writer Cord Jefferson joins Geri to talk about his experiences in the writers’ rooms for two of the most prestigious series currently on television, writing about race and extreme privilege, why staying in your lane is an antiquated idea, and more. Cord Jefferson was a journalist at Gawker from 2012 until 2014, when he joined the writing staff of the Starz sitcom SURVIVOR’S REMORSE. Since then, he has gone on to write for television series like THE NIGHTLY SHOW WITH LARRY WILMORE, THE GOOD PLACE, SUCCESSION, and WATCHMEN. At the 72nd Annual Writers Guild Awards, the writers of WATCHMEN and SUCCESSION won the awards for New Series and Dramatic Series categories, respectively. Cord also received an Emmy Award for co-writing the sixth episode of WATCHMEN, “This Extraordinary Being.” He is currently developing a TV series about Gawker alongside the site’s former Editor-in-Chief, Max Reed. Season 7 of OnWriting is hosted by Geri Cole, a writer and performer based in New York City. The podcast is hosted by Amber-Tiana (a mixed-race girl from Hawaii who relates pretty strongly to Angela Abar but has no familiarity with Watchmen prior to this show), and Justin Xavier (the stereotypical Watchmen fan: a cis- white male). [Editor’s Note: Oops!]This week (1/19/20) we break down Season 1, Episode 6, entitled "This Extraordinary Being.”First, we break down the episode scene by scene, talking about the events of this episode and episodes prior. When we reach the SPOILER segment (signaled with a string of "Tick-Tock"s), we talk about watching the series a second time post-finale, connecting the dots and spotting the clues that have been imperceptibly in front of our faces all along.0:00:00 - Hello & Welcome / Blowing Smoke0:11:57 - Becoming a Vegetable0:30:12 - 1938 Cadets of New York City0:38:50 - NAZIS MARCH WEST0:52:13 - "Okay, I'm Angry”1:05:55 - Cyclops1:13:53 - Talking “Business"1:23:31 - Press Conference1:27:28 - Mind Control is Media1:39:50 - Drop Dead, Fred1:45:43 - The Truth About Judd1:54:52 - TICK-TOCK / FULL SEASON SPOILERS“The Time 22,000 Nazis Met in Madison Square Garden”: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/history/2018/12/09/night-thousands-nazis-packed-madison-square-garden-rally-violence-erupted/%3foutputType=ampSend us an email us to let us know your thoughts (or if we got anything wrong) at MMMWatchmenPodcast@gmail.com!If you want to help us out, there are a few easy (and free) ways to do that!1. IndieWire is launching a new Craft podcast called Deep Dive on Monday with Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof and his creative team of artisans breaking down episode 6 "This Extraordinary Being." To learn more listen to this trailer.
Watchmen's sixth episode mostly takes place in the past, and while that lack of forward movement can sometimes stifle shows, it occasionally provides something brilliant. Such is the experience of This Extraordinary Being. Up to this point, Angela Abar has rejected her past, her legacy. But now, she is getting a full dose of it, reliving the memories of her grandfather. What Angela learns is not just that her grandfather was the first hooded vigilante, but also the difficulties and hardships that he faced. She learns about the anger that lies beneath each injustice that he faced, and the mistakes he made. In this Nerd Flix & Chill podcast, we discuss this terrific episode and the awareness it raises and its ongoing cultural relevance. Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes or listen on Stitcher. Apparently TBS is not just for "very funny" shows anymore, as we learned from the premiere of Lost Resort, a new series with the bones of a reality show and the shredded guts of untreated trauma. The Verge's TV and film critic Joshua Rivera joins us to discuss what entertainment value its producers think the show has, and whether they are right. Around The Dial takes us through Married At First Sight; Hannibal; Twin Peaks: The Return; and Last Chance U. Joshua presents Watchmen's "This Extraordinary Being" for induction into The Canon. Then after naming the week's Winner(s) and Loser, it's on to a Non-Regulation Game Time seething with personal animosity. Limber up all your ecstatic dance muscles and join us! GUESTS

No one, especially not Alan Moore, ever really wanted a Watchmen sequel. Which is exactly why handing the reins to Damon Lindelof, who has a history of disorienting and upsetting expectations, is a stroke of genius. Last year’s HBO series, spearheaded by Lindelof, is a bold, startling continuation of Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel masterpiece--so of course, after talking about the book, Paul, Arlo, and reformed podcaster Greg Sahadachny had to discuss the TV show. The gang talks about the ways in which Lindelof subverts and pays tribute to Moore and Gibbons’ work; how Lindelof built a writers’ room with people who were not like him; the show’s provocative exploration of race and authority; whether or not the show sticks the landing; and much, much more. Next: due to one scheduling kerfuffle after another, we’ve got another Four-Color Flashback for you! Paul and Arlo will discuss Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s Black Hammer. This week's Geektown Radio podcast will be the last full news show of 2019, so I’m joined by co-host Matt from Entertainment Talk to review our week in tv, film and gaming, plus we chat about the weekly tv news, along with a look at the next few crazy weeks on tv as we head into the festive period! We also have a great interview with 'Watchmen' Cinematographer, Greg Middleton.Based in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, the ‘Watchmen’ series embraces the nostalgia of the original Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ groundbreaking and seminal graphic novel, while attempting to break new ground of its own. The series comes from executive producer Damon Lindelof (‘Lost’, ‘The Leftovers’), and is a “remix” of the original source material that offers a fresh story and new characters.Greg Middleton served as the director of photography for half of the season's episodes, including the notable and highly acclaimed black and white episode, "This Extraordinary Being." In the interview Greg talks in detail about his work on that episode and across the series, along with discussing his process and how they achieved this phenomenal drama. Ahead of next year's Emmys, the series is already racking up plenty of awards buzz with nominations for the Satellite Awards, Critics' Choice Awards, Art Directors Guild, Costume Designers Guild, and Writers Guild Awards, to name a few.In addition to working on 'Watchmen', Greg has previously served as cinematographer on shows such as 'Game Of Thrones', 'The Killing', and 'Fringe', along with movies such as James Gunn's 'Slither' and the upcoming Patty Hearst drama 'American Woman' starring 'Watchmen's Hong Chau. Prepare yourself for lots of random screaming in this #SisterNightPod recap, as we breakdown episode 6 of HBO’s Watchmen entitled “This Extraordinary Being.” We knew this episode was going to be huge, but we had no idea how much Lindelof had in store. Happily there is no need to adorn ourselves in clown makeup this go round, as many of our predictions actually came true. Angela goes through it, Will’s complicated backstory is exposed, and Cal needs cue cards to remember his life story. A lot of weird things happen and stakes are raised. This show only keeps getting better. As always, we'd love to hear from you and any theories you might have brewing. Please send anything and EVERYTHING to SisterNightPod@gmail.com. Episode 6, "This Extraordinary Being" rewrote the book on flashback episodes and introduced a second powerful origin story, unmasking Hooded Justice and daring to explore the rage of the marginalized and the phenomenon of benevolent racism. Our sixth "Watchmen" Deep Dive outlines seven big reveals, breaks down the music used in the episode, and scours Peteypedia for the latest dirt on Lady Trieu. Watchmen Episode 6 Summary: “This Extraordinary Being” Laurie tries to get Angela to agree to treatment before the Nostalgia kicks in, but is too late as the latter starts to experience Will’s memories as a new officer with the New York Police in 1938. After discovering a ploy called “Cyclops”, he is nearly lynched by his fellow white officers. While walking home while, he dons a mask and hood to fight off men attacking a young couple. He is called a hero the next day, and supported by his wife June, takes on the persona of “Hooded Justice”. Will is invited to the Minutemen by Captain Metropolis, but when Will finds that “Cyclops” is a plan by the KKK to hypnotize black people at movie theaters to incite riots among themselves across the country, they refuse to help. Will takes out the New York operation on his own, killing all involved, and becomes disillusioned with his role; leaving his family. In the present, Will uses a modified form of the hypnotic technology to make Judd hang himself. Angela wakes up at Lady Trieu’s quarters, who has been helping to get the Nostalgia out of her system. On this week's Thanksgiving-themed episode, Ben, Libby, and Leo discuss the elements of the 2019 television industry that they're thankful for, including but not limited to, living in the era of "too much tv," great second seasons, and Werner Herzog's continued presence on Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian.' We also coin the phrase, "The Reginaissance." And speaking of Regina King, we dig a bit more into this past Sunday's episode of 'Watchmen,' aptly titled, "This Extraordinary Being." Also, Libby regales us with tales from The Paley Honors: A Special Tribute to Television’s Comedy Legends, which featured speeches from noted comedy luminaries Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Carl Reiner, Carol Burnett, and Norman Lear.

The full ToB crew is back to recap Watchmen’s 6th episode “This Extraordinary Being”. Juxtaposing a character reveal in the hagiographic “American Hero Story” with a deep dive into the true origin of Hooded Justice. After ingesting a nearly lethal dose of Nostalgia Angela finds herself stuck in her grandfather’ memories. Both Angela and the audience experience the crippling injustice of 1940’s America, and the first vast and insidious conspiracy is revealed. As Angela struggles to retain her senses, we witness the first masked avenger’s origin, the inception of the Minutemen, and the degradation of Will Reeves. As with so much of the show, and original comic, the truth and public perception are two completely different things.
