Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
Watchmen does an excellent job of asking the question – what makes something villainous? Ozymandias is always the smartest person in the room. Does this make the death and destruction he brings heroic or the stuff of villains? Hear what we think!
During the era of the Weimar Republic, there was famously a known movement advocating for the acceptance and normalization of homesexual people within society. Weimar Germany had a thriving gay scene, but one which still faced oppression and prejudice thanks to the tyrannical legal codes of the previous regime, which were not unlike the laws implemented elsewhere in the world. A brief window of free speech allowed advocates to create films about this subject, most of which were later censored and destroyed. One that survived was Anders als die Andern, a polemic starring German matinee idol Conrad Veidt, just a year before his career would take off staring as the terrifying somnambulant Cesare in Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. Veidt's career saw him starring in some of the most popular and celebrated films of the day, before eventually being forced to make a decision to leave or stay when Hitler and the Nazis seized power in 1933. Listen as we explore Veidt's expansive career and legacy, while also diving in to the progress politics and representations of a pioneering LGBTQ text which nearly didn't survive to today. As a bonus, Stephen discusses his thoughts on the German Expressionist classic Der letzte Mann (The Last Laugh, 1924), after watching it for the first time in light of last week's discussion. This pillar of Weimar Cinema remains one of the chief text's in understanding the era, and should not be missed in any judicious overview.Stephen discusses Der letzte Mann (1924): 00:00-16:51Conradt Veidt Biography: 16:52-33:03Anders als di Andern (Different from the Others, 1919): 33:03-1:01:09Many thanks to Graham Austin and Jack Davenport for the creation of our beautiful logo art and theme music respectively.

Acomi and Turk182 reach the finale of their Watchmen character discussions with part 2 of Ozymandias. Having already talked a bit about his childhood and tenure as a crime fighter, along with his plan for world peace, they now focus on why he wanted to save the world. Trying to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, and the only person he considers a true peer, Alexander of Macedonia, Adrian Veidt sets out to unify the world. But, it's not enough to be like his mentor, Veidt wants to be better than him. Acomi and Turk talk about the role of a mentor, and how Veidt loses sight of it. How his need to be validated underlines each of his accomplishments. And, they ask why would a man who has less of a connection with people and humanity that Dr. Manhattan go through so much to save them? #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #Watchmen #WatchmenFiles #Ozymandias #AdrianVeidt Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. With Autumn quickly approaching, WSF takes on another German expressionist silent horror written and directed by Caligari's Robert Wiene. FURCHT (FEAR) is the tale of Count Greven (Bruno Decarli)'s eventual descent into madness and hysteria with his obsession of collecting one too many of the world's greatest treasures. Lured by rumors of a sacred statue's mystic qualities, Greven's theft from an Indian temple leads to a masterpiece of torment and guilt, gradually rising the wrath of a High Priest (Conrad Veidt) who gives Greven just seven years to live . . . FURCHT is noted as being Veidt's earliest (known) surviving film. + Mentioned in this podcast: Article featuring David Bowie and how Buster Keaton influenced him: https://www.anothermag.com/art-photography/8840/david-bowie-and-buster-keaton-by-steve-schapiro Hosted by YiFeng, Bob and Lily. Hey everybody! For this episode I get to talk to “The Wizard King” Orin Veidt! Orin talks to us about he got into deathmatch wrestling and how there was no turning back. Then we talk about his amazing 2019 and early 2020 where he got to travel the world and face some of the best deathmatch wrestlers. From there we move on to current events. He talks to us about being in IWA Mid South’s King of the Deathmatch for the first time, his announced first round match against Jimmy Lloyd, and his feelings about being in the tournament. Then we’re on to ICW No Holds Barred’s Deathmatch Circus. We talk about his matches for both nights against Alex Ocean & AKIRA. How the set up is different from anything he’s done before. Why being apart of this means so much to him and how he’s going to make it a weekend no one forgets. After that we talk about ICW Milwaukee and his upcoming show this weekend and then this years Insane 8. We cover his first round match against John Wayne Murdoch, the stacked field, if he can pull off the threepeat, and about how unsung the promotion is overall. This interview was something special to me. Orin is, to me, one of the best deathmatch wrestlers in the world and to have him talk to me while I’m in my basement is still a mind blowing event. I really hope you all give this a listen and enjoy it as much as I did. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aloneinthebasement/message

The voicemailers dominate this final mailbag edition of Shat on TV: Watchmen, with five callers sharing their opinions on everything from Dr. Manhattan to podcasts themselves. Plus, a King Bee critic calls in with an apology. Newsstand email covers listeners' final thoughts on the season as a whole, key characters, and even an "umm ... actually" about autism. Watchmen Episode 9 Summary: “See How They Fly” Trieu is revealed to be Veidt's daughter, and in 2008, developed a machine to capture Doctor Manhattan's power which she wants to use for herself. Later, she helps Veidt to escape Europa, and wants him there along with Bien, a clone of her mother, when she activates her device in downtown Tulsa. The Kavalry, working with the Cyclops leadership capture Manhattan, and Joe Keene prepares to take his powers. Laurie discovers Looking Glass is alive, disguised as a Kavalry member. Just as the Kavalry activate their system, Trieu teleports the setup to downtown Tulsa, finding Joe has become ooze, and kills the Cyclops leadership. Before he is killed by Trieu, Manhattan uses the distraction to teleport Veidt, Laurie, and Looking Glass to Karnak, where Veidt reworks his squid-rain system to send frozen squid to pulverize the area around Triue's device, killing Trieu. Angela takes shelter in the theater where Will and her children are. Will explains Manhattan had worked with him to bring this end, a necessary conclusion. Laurie and Looking Glass bring Veidt to justice using the copy of the 1985 video. Angela offers Will a room at their home, and while cleaning up eggs from the night before, recalls Manhattan's statement about transferring his powers through an organic medium. Finding one unbroken egg, Angela eats it and attempts to walk on water as she saw Manhattan do the night before. The season finale, "See How They Fly," inspired our last, longest and best "Watchmen" Deep Dive. Gene examines whether Doctor Manhattan committed suicide. Roger ponders why Angela Abar was so quick to gobble her magic egg. The King Bee worships at the altar of Ozymandias, and the three rate how well each character was used. Finally, the Shat boys end the Deep Dive with their thoughts on how TV might never be the same. Roger proposes a 30-minute bonus episode of "Watchmen," and we talk about big eyebrows and "medium strong" anatomy. What is going on with Angela, her grandfather, and Doctor Manhattan? Is lady Trieu a hero or a villain? So much to talk about, and speculate going into the finale! "Watchmen" Episode 8 focused on Dr. Manhattan and Angela Abar, so we weren't surprised when your letters also centered around the two biggest characters in Damon Lindelof's new TV universe. Email and voicemail sparked conversation about tachyonic antitelephones, whether Topher's being fed mini-bites of blue goodness, and how Adrian Veidt still fits into the story. Watchmen Episode 8 Summary: “A God Walks into A Bar” In Vietnam in 2009, Doctor Manhattan attempts to convince Angela to have dinner with him the next night, as they will fall in love later. Angela is highly skeptical, and Manhattan, after explaining his non-linear experience with time, explains that since 1985, he had been creating life on Europa, and that in 2019, he will fall in love with her just as he is about to be taken by the Seventh Kavalry. He explains how he took up the identity of Cal to blend in, and used a device created by Veidt to give him amnesia about his true identity until it was necessary for Angela to take it out. At Veidt's request, Manhattan transported him to the Europa environment, and also visited Will to encourage him to help Angela in 2019. Angela, speaking to Manhattan in 2019, asks him to ask Will in 2009 about how he knew of Judd's secrets, but realizes she created that idea to Will just now. As the Kavalry prepare to attack, Angela goes to protect Manhattan, who sees this as the moment he fell in love with her, and helps her fend them off, knowing one last Kavalry member remained alive to use a tachyon cannon to capture him. In 2009, Angela accepts Manhattan's dinner proposal. In a post-credit scene, the Game Warden gives a captive Veidt another anniversary cake, which Veidt finds a horseshoe baked inside, and in glee, starts to dig his escape. Join Ryan Nilsen, Tehran Von Ghasri, and Nate Miller break down episode 7 where: Lady Trieu continues to treat Angela for removing the Nostalgia from her body. Angela starts experiencing her own childhood memories in Vietnam atop Will's. When awake, Angela finds herself connected to a long tube that enters a locked room that she believes Will is in. After Bian gives a strange psychological test to Angela, Trieu explains Bian is a clone of her mother, and she has been providing memories to her. With Trieu preparing to activate the Millennium Clock within hours, Angela breaks into the locked room, only to find her tube connect to an unconscious elephant. She rips out her tube and takes an elevator to a higher floor to find a globe device that plays back the messages that people had left at the Manhattan booths. Trieu enters, explaining that she has heard these, and confirms Doctor Manhattan is not on Mars, but actually in Tulsa disguised as a human. Trieu is aware of a Kavalry plot to capture and destroy Manhattan so that they can become like him, and her activation of the Clock within the hour will save humanity. Angela storms out and escapes the facility. Cal finds her at home rummaging for a hammer. Angela tells him that she has always loved him as a husband, but now, calling him "Jon", that they are in trouble, and proceeds to bash his head in. She extracts a small disk from his head, and watches as a blue glow comes from Cal's body. Petey reports to Laurie that he cannot find Wade, but discovered several Kavalry bodies in his shelter. Laurie learns from Angela's ramblings while on Nostalgia about Judd's connection to the Kavalry and goes to visit Jane. Too late Laurie realizes Jane is working with the Kavalry, and becomes trapped. Laurie is taken to the Kavalry headquarters, where Joe shows her a cage-like device as part of their plan to bring Manhattan to them as a means to become godlike themselves. In the manor, Veidt has been on trial for 365 days by the Game Warden for his crimes, not only due to the squid attack but for killing numerous Phillips and Crookshanks. Veidt is given a chance to present his case, but he simply passes flatus in response. The Game Warden determines Veidt's verdict is to be judged by a pack of feral pigs, his "peers", who declare him guilty. The doomsday clock draws nearer. Everything Begins. Nothing Ever Ends. From Kim Newman, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the keystone of a strain of bizarre, fantastical cinema that flourished in Germany in the 1920s and was linked, somewhat spuriously, with the Expressionist art movement. If much of the development of the movies in the medium's first two decades was directed toward the Lumiere-style 'window to the world', with fictional or documentary stories presented in an emotionally stirring manner designed to make audiences forget they were watching a film, Caligari returns to the mode of Georges Melies by presting magical, theatrical effects that exaggerate or caricature reality. Officials perch on ridiculously high stools, shadows are painted on walls and faces, and unrealistic backdrops and performances are stylized to the point of hysteria. "Writers Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz conceived the film as taking place in its own out-of-joint world, and director Robert Wiene and set designers Hermann Warm, Walter Roehrig, and Walter Reimann put a twist on every scene and even intertitle to insist on this. Controversially, Fritz Lang - at an early stage attached as director - suggested that Caligari's radical style would be too much for audiences to take without 'explanation'. Lang devised a frame story in which the hero Francis (Friedrich Feher) recounts the story - of sinister mesmerist charlatan Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), his zombielike somnambulist slave Cesare (Conrad Veidt), and a series of murders in the rickety small town of Holstenwall - and is finally revealed to be an asylum inmate who, in The Wizard of Oz (1939) style, has imagined a narrative that incorporates various people in his daily life. This undercuts the antiauthoritarian tone of the film as Dr. Caligari, in the main story an asylum director who has become demented, is revealed as a decent man out to help the hero. However, the asylum set in the frame story is the same 'unreal' one seen in the flashback, making the whole film and not just Francis's bracketed story somehow unreliable. Indeed, by revealing its expressionist vision to be that of a madman, the film could even appeal to conservatives who deemed all modernist art as demented. "Wiene, less innovative than most of his collaborators, makes little use of cinematic technique, with the exception of the flashback-within-a-flashback as Krauss is driven mad by superimposed instructions that he 'must become Caligari.' The film relies on theatrical devices, the camera fixed center stage as the sets are displayed and the actors (especially Veidt) providing any movement or impact. Lang's input served to make the movie a strange species of amphibian: It plays as an art movie to the high-class crowds who appreciate its innovations, but it's also a horror movie with a gimmick. With its sideshow ambience, hypnotic mad scientist villain, and leotard-clad, heroine-abducting monster, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a major early entry in the horror genre, introducing images, themes, and characters that became fundamental to the likes of Tod Browning's Dracula and James Whale's Frankenstein (both 1931)."
