What's the vision? What are the big goals of the company? And how are we going to get there? They lay out a plan to get people, systems, and resources in place so they can keep moving forward  Tina describes the different stages of business and the different support you might need, like from a VA early on in your discovery phase or an OBM if you are in the early 6 figure range and are clear on your offers but need help How to Outsource Work + Business Growth How an agency style business needs a different team and support than what a product based business needs  Tina shares the difference between hiring for a role vs hiring for results and says you need to look at your business through a lens to figure out what you really need When looking to outsource work, Tina says you should look at all your tasks and think about what you'd like to get off your plate, maybe there are tasks you don't enjoy, or tasks that aren't growth or delivery focused  Lisa stresses the importance of building your team around values instead of just hiring people for transactional purposes and gives an example on values that they talk about in their OBM community   When you're looking to hire be very clear in the job post about what you need, your values and that you're looking to hire someone that is aligned with the same values of who you are and what you do as a business and in the interview ask a question about how or why they feel aligned with your values and vision  The story of how Tina went from a control freak to a team leader and explains that for the first 10 years of her business she did everything herself, but when she changed her business model in 2008, she had to start building her team  A common concern Tina hears from people when it comes to letting go of work is, what if they do it wrong, or they don't do it as well as I do and her response to that is, that will be true as long as you keep how to do it in your head  The first layer of letting go is usually around the functional aspects of the work, and the other thing that comes with letting go is letting go of decision making, which Tina says is harder to do and shares a personal example from when she hired her first OBM  Tina shares what a mentor of hers said years ago which was, every new stage of growth means letting go of more; Tina says if you aren't willing to let go, you will get stuck somewhere   We get to decide want kind of growth we want, Tina says if you don't want to let go, that's fine but you have to make that decision for yourself and your business because it will look different than if you were to hire multiple people on your team and keep growing  Tina doesn't think it's about you having to know how to do all the technical things in your business but says you should have clear, documented processes because people on your team might leave at some point  On the online business management side of Tina's business, they offer an OBM certification training and then those certified become part of their OBM Association On the personal side of the business, Tina does a lot of work and coaching with people around leadership and does different trainings, to learn more about those check out her website    Tina says sometimes it's about giving yourself permission to be able to get the help you want or need so you can build the business you want  Connect with Tina on her website, Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn and check out Tina's interview script/guide freebie for when you're looking to hire   Links mentioned:   Certified OBM® Training   Tina's Book - Becoming an Online Business Manager    Tina's Website    Connect with Tina on Instagram    Connect with Tina on Facebook    Connect with Tina on LinkedIn    Tina's Interview Freebie Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. Today’s guest, Tina Forsyth says the first step to becoming a great leader is to be a great self-leader. How am I Getting in the Way?Tina is a coach, author, educator and entrepreneur. Through her longtime experience as an online business manager, Tina has shifted her focus to helping business owners answer a difficult question, “how am I getting in the way?”Tina asked herself this question in 2009. She had been running a successful business on her own for 10 years and things were growing rapidly. She was adding more people to her team and having an identity crisis. For so long, she ran everything on her own that she struggled to redefine her role as a CEO. While struggling to figure out what her role was, she realized that she was getting in the way of her business’ growth. Tina refers to herself as a recovering control freak. In the early days of her business, she was so caught up in operations, marketing, getting clients, etc. that she didn’t know what to do with herself when her team was handling everything for her. To avoid self-sabotage, she had to shift her mindset into a leadership role. Becoming an OBM Industry LeaderTina began her journey in the Online Business Manager (OBM) industry in 2000, working in the backend for Coachville. After a few years, she started her own business as an OBM and started working on gaining clients. Along the way, she noticed that more people were calling themselves OBMs but not actually doing the work. With so many years of experience under her belt, she decided to write a book, “Becoming an Online Business Manager” in 2008. From there, her business grew and allowed her to work with business owners from all walks of life. What does an OBM do? In Tina’s words, an OBM is someone who values the vision of your business, pays attention to your goals and knows how to get the job done right. She says so many business owners can’t get anything done because they get caught up in day-to-day operations. That’s where a good OBM steps in and organizes everything for you. Tina continues to work with business owners through coaching and training. She is the founder of the International Association of Online Business Managers and the Online Business Manager Training and Certification Program. Your business has been growing. It feels good. You're really proud of what you've created, and then.... you realize you forgot to respond to an important DM on Instagram. And you know you worked until midnight last Tuesday but you're not even sure what you were working on. If you have been a blogger or the owner of an online business for a while you may have heard of the term online business manager (OBM). In fact, in your mind, it may not be quite clear who this person is or how they help digital businesses. You see, running an online business is hard work for any entrepreneur to do it alone. Some of the many tasks involved in ensuring that your business is successful include creating a ton of content and list building. Other tasks include promoting or marketing your business using social media marketing and getting free publicity via guest podcasting. At some point, you will need to hire a number of virtual assistants to do smaller jobs for you. If only there was a better way to manage all of these things seamlessly without the overwhelm. Wouldn't it be great to be able to put a streamlined system or a few systems in place? Systems that run on autopilot so you can free up your time to do what you love? In this post, you will learn what is an online business manager and how this person can help you scale to a 6-7 figure business using automated systems. What is an Online Business Manager? Interestingly enough the term online business manager is a fairly new word in the business world. In fact, it dates back to the early 2000s. Thanks to Tina Forsyth's book, Becoming an Online Business Manager (OBM). The term has been made even more popular in recent years. Essentially, an online business manager is a right-hand person next to the CEO or the digital business owner. They help a digital business owner with management and operations. They are brought into a company to assist with strategy, project management, team management and systems management. In many cases, a business owner will reach a point in their business when they can only do so much because they are limited by time. Even when a business owner decides to hire on a team virtual assistants they still need an OBM. Because they now have to spend their time managing the team which stunts their growth. If you are an online business owner and you want to scale your business exponentially. Chances are that you need an OBM or a Digital Business Manager (DBM). If you want to understand the difference between the two roles let's look at them in more detail. OBM vs DBM If you have been in the online space for a while you probably heard of online business managers and digital business managers. You are probably confused about the differences between the two professionals in terms of what they do. The truth is that there really isn't a difference between the two at all. Online Business Manager (OBM) is a term coined by Tina Forsyth back in the early 2000s. Since then she has formed the International Association of Online Business Managers where she offers certification. Tina offers certified OBM training for anyone who is interested. It is important to note that this is not a governmental organisation nor is it an International accreditation body. In recent times, the name Digital Business Manager (DBM) has been developed and is being used more and more.
