In building block #2 I'm talking about how to build a business around BOTH your strengths and your clients' true needs. Oftentimes things are lopsided in that equation. A symptom that things have gotten out of balance is that everything starts to feel Sisyphean- you keep rolling that boulder up the hill and it keeps rolling right back down.  In micro businesses we wear all the hats! So we have a lot less running room for a business that isn't well structured. I troubleshoot how to spot an unbalanced business, and how to weave your strengths and your clients needs into an offering that is satisfying and sustainable for both of you.  This is the audiobook version of chapter 2 from my free ebook: You Need a Holistic Business: Learn the Six Essential Building Blocks. Do you experience moments of self-doubt about your achievements? Do you think that everyone else knows more than you do? Do you have trouble seeing the value in the services you provide? Imposter syndrome is that little voice in your head that casts doubt and makes you feel like you are not good enough. It can stop you from moving forward and miss out on opportunities. It's been reported that entrepreneurs and freelance consultants are more susceptible to imposter syndrome because they rely on self confidence to make a living, and they may not have the support network to help them when these moments arise. The good news is that imposter syndrome is not permanent and it can be overcome. Elaine Pofeldt discusses strategies to navigate these feelings of inadequacy. If you're wondering what Energetic Thinking means, I share more in today's episode: it's when your thinking flows and you gain insights based on random experiences or something you've seen or heard in real life. One place I like to spark inspiration is in the news and seeing what large corporations do in terms of marketing, advertising and content creation. You can glean some amazing insights that you can apply on a smaller scale to your own business. It's super cool! While the goal isn't for small businesses to become huge corporations (though some of you will want to scale), the lessons you learn can be helpful at any size.  I discuss:  The importance of learning to think like a large corporation Tapping into how the culture of a larger company can help you determine who you are as a company The Magic of Tiny Business by Sharon Rowe, and her definition of how a tiny business is defined Here are four examples of the things I've found interesting and useful in my own Energetic Thinking and how they can be applied to your own business: How NBC repurposed Today into a podcast, and the implications of this move What this means for your own business and how to repurpose your content My process in repurposing the content of this podcast Clubhouse's new partnerships with the NFL and the NHL: the benefits for audience and fans How the partnership built on the strengths of Clubhouse (and what those strengths are) How Clubhouse moved to creatively leverage their best asset, and how you can, too (hint: think about who supports your industry) Why I just love what Barilla Pasta did with their innovative approach to helping you cook perfect pasta (I bet you won't guess what it is!) The importance of adding fun to your brand, or sharing lifestyle posts, and how it enhances the brand experience for your audience The Container Store's email that inspired me, and how you can use the same idea on a smaller level (I share two key points for you to make it work) Something similar I did with one of my own clients It's so important to keep an eye out for creative approaches that you see in the world, then thinking energetically around how you can use something similar for your brand. There are so many good ideas out there! Follow Elaine on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.  Tiny Business, Big Money is a must-read for any entrepreneur who wants to keep their company lean and profitable. This book will help you on your small business journey. Micro-businesses, or one-person businesses with no payroll and very limited overhead, are the ultimate entrepreneurial dream. With minimal start-up costs, low risk, and the ability to scale on your own terms, these small business models are incredibly appealing for entrepreneurs who want to escape traditional corporate ladders or self-employment models that require hiring a team. The problem is that there is very little information out there about how to build one successfully. When you try to Google "one-person business" or "microbusiness," you get results on solo freelancing or microloans—not the kind of advice you need if you want to take your business to $1 million in revenue. Karin Harrington is the Principal at Studio Partnership. With almost 30 years of experience in the industry, she has a keen eye for quality design. She has won many awards from many of the major hospitality brands. She joins host Dan Ryan to talk about her journey through the world of #hospitality and what it all means to her.  Takeaways:    The hospitality industry is full of people who love what they do. They don't view it as a job but rather something that they are lucky enough to do. Going on a vacation is aspirational. You want to go somewhere where you feel relaxed and comfortable in the environment. A sense of community can bring a positive impact to a business. You want to make employees feel welcomed where they are.  You need to be empathetic with others. Everyone who plays a role in hospitality is important and if you don't have that, then your space will never see success. The first step in the design process is programming. It's your responsibility to make sure that you communicate effectively with the clients to make sure everyone is on the same page. Hospitals and doctors offices are spots where hospitality hasn't really taken hold yet. There are a lot of factors at play as to why this hasn't happened yet. COVID has changed it so that people have really slowed down and focused on what is most important to them.  Quote of the Show:   16:34 “Hospitality is so different. It is really a lifestyle. People ask like how you asked me to explain it and it goes all the way to the root of my being. It is the way I was brought up as well as it is part of my personality type.  It is both of those things.”    Links:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karin-harrington-568b95b/ Website: https://studiopartnership.net Shout Outs:   Aaron Anderson 6:41 Rebecca Jones 14:30 ACE Hotel 15:50 Capital One 15:54 TD Bank 18:50 Verdans 19:38 Chevy Chase Club 33:01 Mercy Hospital in Baltimore 39:25 Amy Jacobowsky 41:07 Christina Hart 46:41 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/41Xr1HU5XPM

What does it take to create a successful and profitable business that doesn't require a huge team? And what is the main driver behind reaching the seven figure mark with such a business? If you knew the answer to these questions and had access to the data and the research of how small and no team businesses can grow to seven figures - would that be valuable information for you to have? I'm sure it would. And that's exactly what I'm going to share with you today. My friend and author colleague Elaine Pofeldt has written a new book about this very subject called: ”Tiny business, big money”. Elaine Pofeldt is an independent journalist specializing in entrepreneurship. Her work has appeared on CNBC and in Fortune, Money, Forbes, and many other publications. Recently I sat down with Elaine and talked about her findings when writing 'Tiny business, big money' and we also covered a lot of interesting topics for small business owners - or as Elaine likes to call them, micro businesses. What's inside this episode: The surprising statistics of how long it takes for a micro business to reach the seven figure mark The importance of automation in your business and how that can be the secret sauce of scaling The counter intuitive things you should focus on to grow your micro business, while also protecting your personal time and avoiding burn out.
