Musician and storyteller Matt Costa joins us on the pod. Matt dives into his creative process, collaborating with filmmakers like Devyn Bisson on WSL's ‘As Told By' series produced in partnership with YETI, working with Jack Johnson and Emmett Malloy on the film A Brokedown Melody, and his latest project with Adventure.com and Rivian, Explorations of Sight + Sound. Matt shares his fascinating journey, how growing up with parents in the travel industry and a passion for skateboarding shaped his early years. After a life-altering injury sidelined his skateboarding dreams, an acoustic guitar became the catalyst for a new path in music. He talks about adjusting to life on the road, reflecting on the mentorship he received from No Doubt's Tom Dumont, his serendipitous break with Jack Johnson, and the evolution of crafting songs in the studio to embodying them on stage. From making music in caves to documenting indigenous stories on 16mm film to live scoring films, Matt delves into the art of creating immersive experiences, before answering Instagram questions and the infamous Lightning Round. The last thing Rob expected to be doing in 2024 was talking about Anaheim, California ska-punk/pop band No Doubt, but when he invited Late Slip's ringleader Chelsea Nenni on the show her record choice was crystal clear. When she first heard their breakout album 'Tragic Kingdom' as a 10 year old girl living in Southern California, the seed of one day forming and fronting a band of her own was firmly planted, and Gwen Stefani's honest takes on navigating life and love as a young girl coming of age at the end of the 20th century had a huge impact, even if she didn't quite realize it yet. Songs discussed in this episode: Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; I'll Be Okay, I Love You, Love Me True - Late Slip; Total Hate 95, Total Hate (Original Version) - No Doubt; On My Radio - The Selecter; Spiderwebs, Excuse Me Mr., Just A Girl - No Doubt; Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; Happy Now, Different People - No Doubt; Mind Your Business - Late Slip; Hey You, Sixteen, Sunday Morning - No Doubt; Dream On - Aerosmith; Don't Speak, You Can Do It, End It On This, Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt; I Love You - Late Slip

In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes Davey Havok to the Tuna On Toast studio to celebrate life and 30 years of AFI! For this episode, it's the Avocado on Toast studio :) Stryker and Davey cover so much ground, from AFI, Blaqk Audio and Dreamcar, to funny late night Hollywood stories and a ton more! Davey tells Stryker how he injured his throat during quarantine, what the diagnosis eventually was, and how it's healed. The guys talk about the big New Years Eve Blaqk Audio Show coming up and Davey actually surprises Stryker with his answer to the question about Blaqk Audio rehearsals (or lack thereof). He explains how he and Jade Puget get ready for their BA shows. Davey tells Stryker a great story of his Katy Perry encounter including a situation that went down at her show when Davey was rocking a beautiful raspberry red Marc Jacobs suit. Davey then explains to Stryker why he constantly creates, where that passion comes from, and what album he received for his 5th birthday. Davey discusses with Stryker growing up in Ukiah with guys like Adam Carson, Jade and Nic 13 and the life journey that took him there. Davey tells another great and funny story about the time he met Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii. Davey and Stryker talk about when AFI moved to Berkeley, and the first time playing 924 Gilman Street and jumping on stage to play a few songs during a Rancid show. Stryker and Davey then discuss early AFI albums and what the legendary concert booker Stormy Shepherd told Davey when he asked her to book AFI. Both Stryker and Davey attempt to recall a night many years ago in Hollywood that involved supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and the very fun Chambers Brothers. Davey talks about meeting with and signing to a major label and what that experience was like. The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like. Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont. Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour. The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI. So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview. Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns. He is a true artist and a great dude. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Tuna on Toast.....Avocado on Toast.
