The last thing Rob expected to be doing in 2024 was talking about Anaheim, California ska-punk/pop band No Doubt, but when he invited Late Slip's ringleader Chelsea Nenni on the show her record choice was crystal clear. When she first heard their breakout album 'Tragic Kingdom' as a 10 year old girl living in Southern California, the seed of one day forming and fronting a band of her own was firmly planted, and Gwen Stefani's honest takes on navigating life and love as a young girl coming of age at the end of the 20th century had a huge impact, even if she didn't quite realize it yet. Songs discussed in this episode: Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; I'll Be Okay, I Love You, Love Me True - Late Slip; Total Hate 95, Total Hate (Original Version) - No Doubt; On My Radio - The Selecter; Spiderwebs, Excuse Me Mr., Just A Girl - No Doubt; Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; Happy Now, Different People - No Doubt; Mind Your Business - Late Slip; Hey You, Sixteen, Sunday Morning - No Doubt; Dream On - Aerosmith; Don't Speak, You Can Do It, End It On This, Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt; I Love You - Late Slip

On this show, we discuss the new documentary film written and directed by musician and animal rights advocate Moby. The film is called Punk Rock Vegan Movie and spans a number of decades examining the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk music and animal rights, and how punk ideology is associated with animal rights activism and veganism. The film premiered in January 2023 at the Slamdance Film Festival and is freely available to watch on Moby's YouTube channel. https://moby.com/news/punk-rock-vegan-movie/  The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible.    Slamdance Film Festival wrote about the film: Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. The music we played on the show: No More by Youth of Today https://open.spotify.com/track/0iaFyLheLTw1t7vcD53ywt?si=8be0f6d0a43e481d Cats & Dogs by Gorilla Biscuits https://open.spotify.com/track/0zTfHKPhGwV3Y90EfTztLy?si=69d066d6cff04240 Chicken Squawk by MDC https://open.spotify.com/track/5bhHq796ahqwk70E5fc47M?si=5feea64329fc413e Time Out by Crass  https://open.spotify.com/track/4HWJf7CGgE9Rdhwd0TVM4b?si=ba7cf9c73bef4c50 Please subscribe to 3CR Radical Radio:  3CR relies on our listeners and supporters to remain on-air, on-line and on point. Today I'm joined by Moby to discuss his film ‘Punk Rock Vegan Movie! The new documentary will have its world premiere and be the Opening Night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival on January 20 in Park City, Utah. The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. “'PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists,” said Moby. “After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism." The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like.    Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont.    Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour.    The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI.   So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview.   Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns.    He is a true artist and a great dude. If you’re a pop musician of South Asian descent, not many like you have yet reached the toppermost of the poppermost. Some really famous ones include M.I.A., Norah Jones and Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Soundgarden lead guitarist Kim Thayil, whose folks came from India, was among the first. As a kid, acclaimed new singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman, whose family emigrated from Sri Lanka, looked to Thayil as something of a role model. Which was wise, because Thayil is one of the brightest, coolest rock musicians one could hope to meet. Now Bhiman and Thayil aren’t just mutual fans, they’re also friends. We put them together at KEXP’s studios in Seattle for a Talkhouse Music Podcast, and sure, they talked about being self-described “outsiders in rock & roll,” but they talked about a lot of other interesting things, too: their musical backstories, ruminations on the nature of pleasure and pain, the role of baseball in assimilation, their first guitars, the Chi-Lites, Nirvana’s nickname for Thayil, dealing with fans and, perhaps most important of all, the meaning of the word “epistemological.”

With her recent stint as a guest judge on The Voice, a new single (Baby Don't Lie) and another with Calvin Harris (Together), I decided Gwen Stefani's induction into the Diva Hall of Fame was long overdue.  After forming in 1986 with two albums and rotating members, No Doubt (with Gwen on lead vocals) came to fame with their third album Tragic Kingdom nine years later.  Propelled by two hit singles “Just a Girl” and “Spiderwebs” it put No Doubt on the map.  It wasn't until the third single “Don't Speak” a song about the breakup between Gwen and band member Tony Kanal that the group was propelled into superstardom.  The accompanying tongue in cheek video was beautifully shot and displayed the kind of tensions that only media could dream up; that is the main focus on Gwen with the band members relegated to the background.  On the contrary, Gwen stayed true to her band as this was a long journey to success for all members, not just herself. By 2004, the band released a greatest hits album and went on hiatus.  During this period, Gwen released two solo albums Love. Angel. Music. Baby and The Sweet Escape that produced multiple top 40 singles and the number one hit Hollaback Girl. While No Doubt nor Gwen was known for their remixes, there were some official ones released by Interscope Records.  However, it is the bootlegs of their hits that make up the bulk of this set.  With her all-American good looks, winning smile and sunny personality, Gwen induction is not only a given but well-deserved.  Let's face it, the gays adore her, I love her and frankly, I have the one and only deciding vote LOL.  It's for all these reasons and more that Party Favorz honors Mrs. Stefani with an official induction into the Diva Hall of Fame.  XO Album : Gwen Stefani | The Diva Series Genre : Electro-pop Year : 2014 Total Time : 01:22:26 1. Director, musician, and producer, Liam Lynch, tells Jen about his habitual eating at In-and-Out Burger, making a good steak, his love of parmesan cheese, and how not to make a pizza. The live footage is of Liam performing "Whatever" as part of a Foo Fighter's encore at a sold-out Universal Amphitheater. That's Dave Grohl on drums and Tony Kanal of No Doubt on bass. How could it not rock? Liam also happens to be Jen's little brother. [April 2003, Los Angeles, CA]
