Vico Ortiz narrates a raucous space adventure rom-com with infectious energy. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the fun and thrills of this lively story. It's 2061, and Cleo and her three best friends—all scientists—sneak aboard to explore the neglected rocket PROVIDENCE I. Twenty years earlier, it failed to launch and its 203-person crew mysteriously vanished. But when Cleo inadvertently starts the dark matter engine, they're launched into a seven-year mission with only Billie, the prickly holographic computer, to guide them. Ortiz's considerable acting talents bring each character—human and otherwise—to life. They bounce between each voice with skill, making this lively story of friendship, queer romance, and interdimensional danger heaps of fun on audio. In What Will Be Here?, five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world's decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars. They wonder what their world will have become by the time their message is listened to. At its core, this show is about living and creating when things feel pointless. It's a story that came out of the pandemic, and the landscape in which this story was written and produced greatly influenced how it turned out. What Will Be Here? is set on Earth 200 years in the future, where large-scale crises are fully normalized. But despite the bleak backdrop, this story is one of hope - of overcoming challenges, of making things that might be temporary, but also things that might be launched into space and continue on forever. In Our Flag Means Death, sailing the open seas meant freedom for many in the 1700s, and that could not be more true than it is for real-life pirate captain Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate! Running away from his life and family among the colonial elite of British Barbados, Stede builds a boat, hires a crew, and fails miserably as a pirate captain… that is until he meets the infamous Blackbeard! To celebrate the last week of Pride, Amanda and Patrick find themselves sailing the high seas, where they stay mostly on topic as they discuss the breakout queer pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death from HBO Max! Join us as we delve into our favorite moments, characters, and themes of one of the best-executed queer shows on television today. Come listen as they talk about the subtle ways this show keeps important topics light and how empowering it is to see a wide variety of actual queer folk (actors and characters) represented onscreen. Patrick delves into his roots as a history major to bring you some fun facts from the history of Atlantic piracy, while Amanda screeches about kissing, Mary's post-Stede life, and how showrunner and creator David Jenkins fights queerbaiting head-on. With a second season recently announced, Amanda and Patrick talk about what they're looking forward to in the new season. Their love for all things Taika Waititi is evident as they gush over the powerhouse cast that includes the likes of Rhys Darby, Vico Ortiz, Con O'Neill, Nathan Foad, Leslie Jones, and Samson Kayo. Today we're spotlighting What Wil Be Here?, a new sci-fi audio drama about living on doomed earth and building things anyway. This show is created and produced by Tal Minear, who makes Sidequesting! In What Will Be Here?, five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world's decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars. They wonder what their world will have become by the time their message is listened to. What will be left of a planet that has destroyed itself? What will be left of the people who lived there? What will become of their stories? What will be here? At its core, this show is about living and creating when things feel pointless. It's a story that came out of the pandemic, and the landscape in which this story was written and produced greatly influenced how it turned out. What Will Be Here? is set on earth 200 years in the future, where large-scale crises are fully normalized. But despite the bleak backdrop, this story is one of hope - of overcoming challenges, of making things that might be temporary, but also things that might be launched into space and continue on forever. Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Puerto Rican non-binary actor Vico Ortiz (@puertoricaninja) to chat about why Parks and Recreation Should've Been Gay. Parks and Rec is a comfort show for almost every queer person we know, and yet it's somehow not actually gay? First off, parks are canonically gay. Lesbians own camping and hiking. Recreation? Also gay. The queer coding of chosen family is strong in this show. If you look up “bear” in the queer dictionary, you get a picture of Ron Swanson. Leslie is canonically head over heels for her best friend Ann. She would drop her husband in a second for a chance with Ann. Leslie and Ann are written so gay and we were robbed of them getting to be together. We could've had such a beautiful polycule with Ben and Leslie and Chris and Ann. It's about living courageously as marginalised people, and also about being a good ally.Vico shares their experience as a queer performer, the intersection of his gender identitiy and her identity as Puerto Rican, and we also touch on poly dating as a person in the spotlight. With a touch of dismantling the patriarchy and a lick of self-care and wholesome vibes, this episode is truly fierce-gentle in its nature. To follow more of Vico check out their socials:Instagram: @puertoricaninjahttps://www.instagram.com/puertoricaninja/Twitter: @v_vico_ortizhttps://twitter.com/v_vico_ortizFacebook: @vico.ortiz.officialhttps://www.facebook.com/vico.ortiz.officialTik Tok: @Vico_Ortizhttps://www.tiktok.com/@vico_ortizVico also mentions the series These Thems, which I highly recommend watching:https://www.outfestnow.com/thesethemsAnd if you are interested in learning sign language:For ASL Vico recommends: https://www.queerasl.comFor Auslan Fleassy recommends:https://expression.com.au/---------------------------------------------------------This podcast was recorded in Naam, on the lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.Fierce-gentle was made possible and supported by a Banyule City Council Business Grant.Written, recorded and hosted by Fleassy Malay:https://linktr.ee/fleassymalayReclaim your Voice, Courage, and Power in Fleassy's online course, RISE - Speaker Training.https://coursecraft.net/courses/z9VdE/Music and editing by Rory McDougall:https://soundcloud.com/myshyteSupport the show

In this past year, as most actors and artists were forced to stay at home, we found new ways to keep creating. The most obvious is the explosion of zoom readings and productions of both new and existing works. Others discovered this medium of podcasting, and in just one year the number of podcasts doubled. But in today's episode, in honor of Pride Month, I'm talking with two women who set out to explore a relatively new art form, the podcast musical. Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster are the creative force behind The Flame musical. It's the story of two women -- Jamie, a queer bar owner, and Sam, the woman selling the building that the bar inhabits -- and the inevitable sparks that end up flying between them Follow Ellie | Leigh | The Flame And at the end of this episode I play one of the songs from the first episode of The Flame: "Keep It Lit" Lead vocals: Jenn Colella as Jo, Ellie Brigida as Jamie, and Leigh Holmes Foster as Heather Ensemble vocals: Dayna Arnett, Briana Bonilla, Leesa Charlotte, Benjamin Doncom, Ashton Grooms, E. The incredible Vico (Transparent, American Horror Story: 1984, Vida) tells us about the taxing challenges of working as a non-binary performer in an industry that is still catching up with the times. They share Rough Day In Showbiz stories about being mis-gendered on a film set even after disclosing their pronouns several times, and spending over a month rehearsing a film and STILL getting mis-gendered on set again. This is a very important episode and I was honored to have Vico on and unabashedly discuss their struggles as rawly and honestly as they did. I am thankful for them, I whole-heartedly support them, and I admire their bravery. Happy Pride Month!   Follow Vico on IG: @PuertoRicanNinja  Hosted by Justin Sorvillo (@JustinSorvillo)

Welcome! In this episode of the Level Up! Podcast With Shay, Vico (they, him, she) opens up about how they have become the tenacious person they are today. A trip to fencing lessons with their mom and brother at 11 years old started them on their journey. After leveling up due to always competing against older boys in addition to their Speedy Gonzalez talent, Vico traveled the world competing in and usually winning at fencing tournaments. At 17, when the fencing career started coming to a close, Vico decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Something they had always wanted to do. Now, you can find Vico on the screen on many different shows, playing many different characters - queer, straight, non-binary, cis, you name it! And now they have a vision of seeing and getting more queer characters and people who look like them on the screen. I'd say they have a pretty good start. We go into soooo much more. Thanks for stopping by - I'm excited for you to hear it! You can find and support Vico on Instagram @puertoricaninja and TikTok @vico_ortiz. Check them out on the screen!
