What is it - Latin: Quadragesima, 'Fortieth' The 40 Days before easter NOT including Sundays is a period of preparation to remember the Lord's passion, death and resurrection and ultimate Celebration of his Resurrection during Easter. Why 40 days? Biblically 40 is normally the number associated with a time of testing, trial, penance, purification, and renewal. Additionally, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert in preparation for his public ministry. We are called to this season of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Catholics are also required to receive Holy Communion at least once a year and therefore must give a really good confession AT LEAST once a year prior to that reception of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Holy Communion reception must be done between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday Highly recommend the book: Deliverance prayers for the Laity which has an extremely thorough examination of conscious in the back. There are 3 tenants to Lent that we're supposed to dive into prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Prayer because obviously we are meant increase our prayer life and we will discuss more ways you can do that at the end of the episode. Almsgiving or giving of some sort of charity. Now this can be giving of time, talent or treasure to something, someone, somewhere to ultimately Glorifying God and furthering His kingdom. And fasting which is normally where people focus during lent. Giving up something. Fasting is a penitential exercise and penitential practices are normally lifted on a solemnity - a feast day of the highest rank. Fasting from a sin is not a fast, it's resisting sin. Fasting is a powerful tool used since the Old Testament. Fasting brings clarity in all areas and it is a light that shines in the dark places where hidden or unknown sin live. The fast is the penitential act that acknowledges our sins and seeks the mercy of God. What is a penance? After a valid confession your sins are forgiven BUT your sin still did damage to the body of Christ so we are called to make reparations for that. Catechism 1459 states, “Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much. But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his relationships with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused. Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins. This satisfaction is also called “penance.” Some penances, after confession could be a simple prayer or if you stole or wronged another human you could be told to repair that - ask forgiveness, admit your wrong, etc. During lent, however, we make sacrifices in penance for our self, our families, the whole of the Church, humanity as well as any transgressions on our part and the whole world. “THE Church's Canon law reaffirms the obligation to do penance – to interrupt the usual comforts of life, to rediscover in prayer the saving love of God, and to practice charity and justice towards those in need.” https://cgcatholic.org.au/catholic-voice/blog/lenten-penance-explained/ Matthew 6:16-18 clearly states that when we fast, we're supposed to do it without anyone else knowing it. Fasting & Abstinence: Required fasting is when you eat less in a day and abstaining is when you don't eat meat. Let's dive in. Fasting is required for Catholics who are 18-58 years old and it includes a limited fast which for the US means a single normal meal (think dinner with family) and 2 snacks. The 2 snacks should not equal the size of the one meal. Kids are not required to fast BUT we try to have them fast from something (not food). You are not required to fast if you have a medical condition (diabetes, hypoglycemia, etc) or in a season of pregnancy or breastfeeding that requires you to not fast from food. Abstinence from meat is required for Catholics who are 14+. In the Western Rite that is considered chicken, beef, pork but fish and shellfish, eggs, milk products and foods made using animal fat are okay. Eastern Rite that is anything that is made from or touches animal product - fish, eggs, milk products, and foods made using animal fat. They can eat shellfish because they're considered bugs? They often go completely vegan for the whole of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days we abstain from meat and fast from food. All fridays in lent we are called to abstain from meat (actually all fridays) Sundays we never fast or abstain because it's a solemnity which is the highest level of feast in the Church. Some people say that that means Sundays are not a day you need to “fast” from whatever you give up others say that because the fast is voluntary it's not *fasting* like those from food the Church calls us to so we should still keep it up on Sundays. We, as a family, make sundays a fun day where you do get to have that thing (in moderation). Jewish calendar counts days sunset to sunset so we like to relax our fast from Saturday evening until Sunday because then we can have family time Saturday night then refocus Sunday evening to get ready for school. Ideas for things to *give up* for Lent Only shopping small businesses & farmers markets Unnecessary spending Painting your nails, doing your hair, or makeup Going carnivore, going vegetarian, going pescatarian, going completely vegan Deserts or snacks Alcohol Eating out Secular music, podcasts, shows, youtube and movies - one or all Yelling or complaining - taking a deep breath before reacting/responding to anyone No phones until a certain time. It mentions what servers do to a degree but mostly what the Priest is to do. There is a presumption but commentators have to fill-in blanks Orans positions isn't traditional in the Western Rite, it is done more in Eastern. It is not novelty w/ places they are practiced. The ‘choir loft' is also a Protestant thing, not a Catholic thing. There are just customs and customs are different in different regions. That is the way it is and the way it was. The Churches liturgy wouldn't make sense….. Jerusalem is the Church in that reading when it says Jerusalem Rejoice! Lent isn't a matter of what you are giving up, we should be depriving ourselves of things we like, that's all good but we should focus on acquiring virtue and growing in the love of Our Lord. If you do only deny yourself via deprivations, w/o attachment to Our Lord, the deprivations w/ strike you at some point and you can get to “well I gave this up so I can do this over here”. I will meat w/ my Spiritual Director and make sure that I have a Lenten program that is workable and brings me closer to God. Allegorical Sense — the realm of faith, corresponding to meditatio in monastic prayer: This sense tells me what things really and fully mean when they are perceived in the superior light of divine and catholic faith. Literal Sense — the realm of “nature” (or, better, of the most immediate appearances of a perceived reality), corresponding to lectio in monastic prayer: Here, I see each of my Brothers (Sisters) in their essence and nature as a reality, a “given,” with all of their personal qualities and attributes, their temperaments and character traits. With some of them, an easy and natural concord flows from a compatibility of those personal qualities and attributes. With others, such easy amity is lacking owing to a less compatible arrangement of our personalities. Today Fr. Anthony interviews Lori, a founding member of Christ the Savior parish in Anderson, SC. Listen as she describes how the parish started in the 90's with a group of Episcopalians who felt abandoned by the changes in that Christian group, spent a time as continuing Anglicans, and then converted as a parish to Orthodoxy into the Western Rite vicariate of the Antiochian Orthodox Church. This conversation is part of Fr. Anthony's effort to collect, preserve, and share the history of Christ the Savior parish (orthodoxanderson.org). Enjoy the show!

Cardinal Pell told an Atheist that he could go to Heaven, we must remember that too. Theologically speaking, I'm not a follower of what Pope Benedict XVI preached at times. I didn't know Cardinal Pell but I did meet him once. Cardinal Pell got death threats when he was in the Vatican and was tasked w/ cleaning up the Vatican bank. He found MILLIONS that were lost. They treated him like he was the worst of criminals. He had some strength of character and the Good Lord helped him through those 2 years of solitude. HEADLINE: Saint Benedict Center Mourns Pope Benedict XVI by Brother Andre Marie Benedictine pontificate was his 2009 Apostolic Constitution, Anglicanorum Coetibus. Benedict's far sighted decision laid the foundation for a future Uniate church and, potentially, a second Western Rite of Catholicism. In this single action, Benedict did more to promote the unity of Christendom than sixty years of ecumenical meetings, commissions, and dialogs. Ecumenism isn't helping the church it is harming the church. This was a welcomed vehicle that facilitated Anglicans that WANTED to come to the Catholic faith. I you think it don't say it, if you write it don't sign it. This is a regime in Rome that is known for axing people. Pope Francis has fired many for being mildly critical of him. In this episode, we discuss the subject of Fasting, and how this practice needs to be revived (particularly) within the Western Rite of the Catholic Church. This Wingin' It is the fourteenth part in our series on the Divine Service. We're getting to the end of this series, and you may be wondering how Mike and Wade are going to spend 40 minutes talking about distributing the Lord's Supper....but that probably means you haven't heard Mike and Wade talk before. If you have heard them, though, you might be wondering how they kept it to around 40 minutes. Either way, we hope you enjoy! This is the twelfth part in our Wingin' It series on the Divine Service, and Mike and Wade have finally reached the Words of Institution! We're getting close to wrapping up this series, but just as with the Divine Service, sometimes the best parts are saved until last. In this, the eleventh part in our Wingin' It series on the Divine Service, Mike and Wade are joined in the studio by Rev. Dr. Paul Lehninger to discuss the much ballyhooed showdown over the Eucharistic Prayer. The guys have some slight technical difficulties toward the end of the episode, but nothing that causes too much of a problem. A big thanks to Dr. Lehninger for joining us on this Wingin' It. We hope to have him back again for a full episode on one of his areas of expertise. And as a reminder, this is the eleventh part in the series promised by Mike on Episode 33, which will cover various parts of the Western Rite. This is the tenth part in our Wingin' It on the Divine Service. Mike and Wade are back to discuss the Prefaces and the Sanctus. (Stay tuned for what they promise will be a battle royale over the Eucharistic Prayer next time.) Mike clarifies that they do know the proper distinction between the Propers and the Ordinaries (despite having switched them around in a previous episode). And that distinction proves to be important when discussing the Prefaces. As the second part of the Divine Service begins, we find a new address (in the Prefaces) and a renewed confession of the Triune God (in the Sanctus). Give it a listen, share with a friend, and let us know what you think! And if you are enjoying it, make sure to share it with friends and family! In this Wingin' It session, the seventh part of our series on the Divine Service, Mike and Wade discuss the Hymn of the Day and the Sermon. These two parts fall right at the middle of the service and are central to the Divine Service within most Lutheran churches. Wade and Mike also mention the previous session when they were joined by Dr. Kristi Meyer, who recently published Understanding Lutheran Worship. If you haven't listened to that Wingin' It yet, you can find it right here. This Wingin' It session is the sixth part of our series on the Divine Service. Mike and Wade are joined in the studio this time by Dr. Kristi Meyer to discuss the Lectionary. You may remember Dr. Meyer from our episode on math (which was also the episode in which Nick may have jeopardized his future). If you're wondering what a cryptographer has to say offer on the Divine Service, you may be surprised to hear that Dr. Meyer has published on the topic in her recently published booklet Understanding Lutheran Worship. We are thrilled that Dr. Meyer was able and willing to join us. Before discussing the Lectionary, however, Mike provides a quick overview of the Salutation and Prayer of the Day. If you're enjoying this series, we'd be thrilled if you'd share them with friends and family. But it's not all Christmas; in fact, Mike somehow finds a way to even talk Lincoln! If you're enjoying this series, we'd be thrilled if you'd share them with friends and family. On Episode 33, Mike and Wade sat down to discuss worship, or the Divine Service, and Mike promised a series of Wingin' It episodettes on various parts of the Western Rite. 00:00 - Introduction 03:07 - Scripture Narrative (Revelation 7) 06:29 - Free-for-All (Favorite Things about Teaching) 14:09 - Main Topic (Mike and Wade Talk "Worship") On episode THIRTY-THREE of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and Wade fly duo to talk about “Worship” or “Divine Service” or Gottesdienst or whatever you might call it. The guys hope that this episode will serve as a bit of a primer for a series of Wingin’ It episodettes that Mike plans to spearhead on the Western Rite. Before getting the main topic, however, Wade tipped his Bible over and opened it backwards to discuss a selection from Revelation 7. Mike and Wade also take a few minutes to discuss their favorite things about teaching at the college, as well as their favorite courses this semester. In a moment of astonishment, Wade also learns that Mike has baptized babies, and finds the practice laudatory (Wade then apologizes to his previous congregation). Wade also admits that he sounds more than a bit like Peter Brady from this episode, but he assures us that he is not going back through puberty (we all just hope he’s finally growing up). They can’t go quite as long in this episode as their used to, however, because Mike has to run to class (evidently something they really do expect him to do at the college). We hope you enjoy the episode! If you have any specific questions or topics that you’d like to hear Mike talk about, feel free to email him at Mike@LetTheBirdFly.com.
