We're live now with Fr. Jason Charron, Ukrainian Catholic Priest who currently serves two parishes, as well as in a bi-ritual capacity with the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In Today's Show I've heard that for some Eastern Rite parishes, when they reach around 150 families, that it's a tradition that they open a new Church, is this true? A brief overview of the Ukrainian and other Eastern Churches. Do the Eastern Churches have teachings or traditions in regard to conscientious objection? 1Is the Sacrament of Confession identical to the Western Church? Are the words of absolution the same? How do the Eastern Churches set up their calendars, particularly in regard to their saints' feast days? Do the Eastern Catholics venerate the same saints that the Orthodox Church venerates? Would the canonization of Bishop Fulton Sheen be venerated by both Eastern and Western Churches? Would you say that the typical Melkite mass is closer to a Roman Rite Novus Ordo or TLM in terms of how it is celebrated? I was baptized Melkite and my husband Maronite, he wants to attend the Melkite parish, does he need to formally "switch" for the lack of a better word? Can Father give a brief history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church since the Council of Florence? How should an Eastern Catholic person lead a Bible study with a Western Catholic group? Can you tell us a bit about your experience? Hi Father, I've been thinking about the part of the wedding vows “Till Death do us Part” and I was wondering is there really a Traditional Catholic background to these words? Is Marriage eternal? What do you think Christ meant when He said, "there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of Heaven"? Would changing the Nicene Creed to omit the Filioque be an indication of a doctrinal change since the creed has been upheld through councils and a summary of the important articles of faith? Do some of the Eastern Churches have more than 73 books of the Bible/Canons of Scripture? What are some of the most well-known or largest Eastern Rite Catholic churches and how do they differ from one another? Are Roman Catholics allowed to take the Eucharist in a Byzantine church? Which Divine Liturgy do the Melkites use? Why should one choose Catholicism over Orthodoxy? What are the differences in their theology and approach to faith? Do Eastern Rite churches celebrate the Novus Ordo? What is Father's opinion of the difference(s) between the Eastern Rite and the Roman Catholics on the Nicene Creed? How do doctrines of the Eastern Church compare to the doctrines of the Latin Church? Am I correct in my understanding that the Eastern Rite has a different view of Original Sin than the West? If so, can you tell me what the difference is? And also, how could something so instrumental in our Catholic faith lead to different views among rites without discrediting the church as a whole? Can women be on the altar in Eastern churches? Does the priest face Jesus or the people? Do the faithful receive in the hand or kneeling and on the tongue? What tips would you recommend for someone attending their first Divine Liturgy? What kind of relationship do you have with the Roman Catholic priests from your diocese? Do you work together in any capacity? Also, are you considered part of the Diocese of Rochester, or how does that all work? What is the purpose of the wall (Iconostasis I believe it's called) that separates the Altar and the people? What is the Eastern Rite and where/how did it originate? Should this be deemed as a separation or split from the Roman Rite, or is there a better way to describe it? I follow the Gregorian calendar! But what's the difference between the Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar? As I understand it, Eastern Rite Catholic priests are able to be married and even have children. Can you please explain that concept and why it is approached differently in Eastern Rite churches? How do Eastern Rite priests balance the roles of being a husband, father, and priest all at the same time? Are there any differences in potential roles for women in Eastern Rite churches in comparison to the Roman Rite? I thought I had heard somewhere that Eastern Rite churches are slightly more restrictive in this area. Does one need to be registered as a member of an Eastern Rite church in order to attend Mass there? In other words, if I am a parishioner of another parish, for example, could I just decide in a spur of the moment to attend an Eastern Rite mass on any given Sunday? Would that “get me in trouble” with God in any way? Did you ever, at any point, consider becoming a priest in the Roman rite? Can you tell us a little bit about how you came to the decision of becoming a Melkite Catholic priest? Is there any difference in how the sacraments are administered in a Melkite Catholic church versus, say, an average Roman Catholic parish? What is it - Latin: Quadragesima, 'Fortieth' The 40 Days before easter NOT including Sundays is a period of preparation to remember the Lord's passion, death and resurrection and ultimate Celebration of his Resurrection during Easter. Why 40 days? Biblically 40 is normally the number associated with a time of testing, trial, penance, purification, and renewal. Additionally, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert in preparation for his public ministry. We are called to this season of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Catholics are also required to receive Holy Communion at least once a year and therefore must give a really good confession AT LEAST once a year prior to that reception of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Holy Communion reception must be done between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday Highly recommend the book: Deliverance prayers for the Laity which has an extremely thorough examination of conscious in the back. There are 3 tenants to Lent that we're supposed to dive into prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Prayer because obviously we are meant increase our prayer life and we will discuss more ways you can do that at the end of the episode. Almsgiving or giving of some sort of charity. Now this can be giving of time, talent or treasure to something, someone, somewhere to ultimately Glorifying God and furthering His kingdom. And fasting which is normally where people focus during lent. Giving up something. Fasting is a penitential exercise and penitential practices are normally lifted on a solemnity - a feast day of the highest rank. Fasting from a sin is not a fast, it's resisting sin. Fasting is a powerful tool used since the Old Testament. Fasting brings clarity in all areas and it is a light that shines in the dark places where hidden or unknown sin live. The fast is the penitential act that acknowledges our sins and seeks the mercy of God. What is a penance? After a valid confession your sins are forgiven BUT your sin still did damage to the body of Christ so we are called to make reparations for that. Catechism 1459 states, “Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much. But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his relationships with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused. Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins. This satisfaction is also called “penance.” Some penances, after confession could be a simple prayer or if you stole or wronged another human you could be told to repair that - ask forgiveness, admit your wrong, etc. During lent, however, we make sacrifices in penance for our self, our families, the whole of the Church, humanity as well as any transgressions on our part and the whole world. “THE Church's Canon law reaffirms the obligation to do penance – to interrupt the usual comforts of life, to rediscover in prayer the saving love of God, and to practice charity and justice towards those in need.” https://cgcatholic.org.au/catholic-voice/blog/lenten-penance-explained/ Matthew 6:16-18 clearly states that when we fast, we're supposed to do it without anyone else knowing it. Fasting & Abstinence: Required fasting is when you eat less in a day and abstaining is when you don't eat meat. Let's dive in. Fasting is required for Catholics who are 18-58 years old and it includes a limited fast which for the US means a single normal meal (think dinner with family) and 2 snacks. The 2 snacks should not equal the size of the one meal. Kids are not required to fast BUT we try to have them fast from something (not food). You are not required to fast if you have a medical condition (diabetes, hypoglycemia, etc) or in a season of pregnancy or breastfeeding that requires you to not fast from food. Abstinence from meat is required for Catholics who are 14+. In the Western Rite that is considered chicken, beef, pork but fish and shellfish, eggs, milk products and foods made using animal fat are okay. Eastern Rite that is anything that is made from or touches animal product - fish, eggs, milk products, and foods made using animal fat. They can eat shellfish because they're considered bugs? They often go completely vegan for the whole of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days we abstain from meat and fast from food. All fridays in lent we are called to abstain from meat (actually all fridays) Sundays we never fast or abstain because it's a solemnity which is the highest level of feast in the Church. Some people say that that means Sundays are not a day you need to “fast” from whatever you give up others say that because the fast is voluntary it's not *fasting* like those from food the Church calls us to so we should still keep it up on Sundays. We, as a family, make sundays a fun day where you do get to have that thing (in moderation). Jewish calendar counts days sunset to sunset so we like to relax our fast from Saturday evening until Sunday because then we can have family time Saturday night then refocus Sunday evening to get ready for school. Ideas for things to *give up* for Lent Only shopping small businesses & farmers markets Unnecessary spending Painting your nails, doing your hair, or makeup Going carnivore, going vegetarian, going pescatarian, going completely vegan Deserts or snacks Alcohol Eating out Secular music, podcasts, shows, youtube and movies - one or all Yelling or complaining - taking a deep breath before reacting/responding to anyone No phones until a certain time. Encore from 12/19/2023 Patrick engages in thought-provoking conversations with his listeners on various topics. From discussing the intricacies of Catholic rights and sacraments, to addressing the role of lay people in evangelization, to navigating the complexities of Pope Francis' decisions, Patrick Madrid provides insight and clarity on pressing issues in the Catholic Church. Connor - Can I confirm my child in the Eastern Rite then attend a Latin Rite Church? Michael - I feel similarly to the caller about evangelization as a lay person. What do you think about the Catechism saying that lay people should evangelize? Jim - There is a lot of controversy with Pope Francis recently with the blessing of gay couples. I think Pope Francis has some wisdom in what he is doing. Giving them a blessing reminds them that they are in sin, in the same way that we get a blessing when we can't receive communion. Rick - I disagree that Jehovah's Witnesses don't have a lot to say. I feel they have a lot of good and they study the bible. Pat - When you have Mass intentions said for someone who has passed away, how do you know how effective the Masses are? Joseph - I go to daily Mass and see a crossing guard. I met her in a store and found out she was a Lutheran. What can I say to her to help her into the Catholic Faith? Pita - I was not married in the Church, but am Catholic. If I go to confession, can I receive the Eucharist? (34:20) Alison - IVF seems like it is fine since God is making life from it, so shouldn't it be okay? (43:56)

On this episode, Katie chats with Rebecca Hamilton, a practicing Eastern Rite Catholic, exploring the unique, transcendent beauty of this liturgy. We'll learn about some of the practical differences between Eastern and Latin Rite, what family and community life is like as a Byzantine Catholic, and we'll also hear some BEAUTIFUL chant from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. No matter what your religious (or non religious) background, this episode is a deep dive into Beauty as a Lived, Practiced, Reality. I would venture to say that most Catholics have no idea that there is an Eastern Rite wing of their own church. That is, there are churches in North American & Europe that if a Catholic should enter, he would assume is Orthodox. So much of the ritual would be the same. Actually, an Orthodox Christian might feel more at home in such a church. But in this case, said church is 100% Catholic, fully in communion with Rome. These congregations observe many of the traditions of Orthodoxy. Priests can marry, iconography is important, and Sunday services are not called Masses, but Divine Liturgies. I don't recall what year these episodes aired, but certainly within the 1st few years of this century. The guests are Fr.Michael Bliszcz from St. Michael's Church in Grand Rapids, MI and Prof. Robert Marko, who at the time taught Religion at Aquinas College. I recall enjoying my conversations with these gentlemen. And I learned a lot.
On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: Under fire for days now, President Joe Biden addressed the nation on the chaotic, desperate race to get thousands of people out of Afghanistan. This as the White House responds to blistering criticism for how it has handled the crisis. Afghanistan veteran and current Marine Corps Reserve member, Mike Berry, joins to share his thoughts on the scenes in Afghanistan right now and whether it was a surprise that the Taliban took over the country so quickly. Meanwhile, the US House returns Monday, facing votes on two Senate-passed infrastructure bills; a $1.2 trillion measure for roads, bridges, waterways and broadband, and a larger package filled with much of the Biden Administration's domestic policy agenda. Among those looking forward to the occasion is the country's little-known Gypsy Greek Catholic Church which follows the Eastern Rite. EWTN Hungary brings us more on the Gypsy Greek Catholics. In this episode of the Anything But Catholic Podcast, Host Christopher Laurence and Apologist David Cooke answer listener questions. QUESTIONS ADDRESSED IN THIS EPISODE: 1) I'm reading things about a synodal crisis in Germany, some clarity about what this is and what it means for church unity would be nice. 2) How can you be against Protestant denominations when there are denominations inside the Catholic Church (SSPX, NO, TLM, Eastern Rite, etc.) ------------------------------ Send Questions for Next Episode To: SIQUAVIRTUS@PROTONMAIL.COM Please visit our main site, Si Qua Virtus, which hosts all of our content (This podcast, the SQV Podcast, The Veritas Gaming Podcast, User Submissions, Merchandise, Resources, etc.), and like the Si Qua Virtus Facebook Page, and join the Anything But Catholic Facebook Group.

The Annual Cambridge Lecture in Medieval and Early Modern Slavonic Studies was launched in 2016 to examine key questions of early Slavonic Studies, with a particular focus on the lands of present-day Ukraine. It features leading scholars who study the ever-changing cultural landscape of the Ukrainian lands and the varied composition and character of their inhabitants from the medieval period to the late eighteenth century. In line with current trends in scholarship, the series moves beyond deep-rooted national paradigms and adopts a transnational approach to the study of the Rus and Ruthenian past and to the early modern history of Ukraine and its neighbours. It casts Ukraine as a multifocal centre for the formulation and transformation of political notions, social paradigms and cultural identities. In March 2017, the Second Annual Lecture was delivered by Dr Yury Avvakumov, Assistant Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame. His topic was 'The “Uniates” and the Invention of Eastern Orthodoxy: Late Byzantine and Kyivan Advocates of Church Union in the Crossfire between Rome, Constantinople, and Moscow'. Prior to joining the Department of Theology at Notre Dame University, Dr Avvakumov taught at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv where he taught Historical Theology before becoming the Rev. Basil Galyarnyk Professor of History, Dean of the Humanities Faculty and Founding Director of the Classical, Byzantine and Medieval Studies Department (2003-2009). He also was Visiting Professor in Church Slavonic at the Ukrainian Free University (2002-2007), Munich, and Lecturer in Latin and Greek language and Patristic literature in the Russian Orthodox Theological Seminary and Academy in Leningrad (1984-1991).

Fasting and penance is the way to prepare for any great feast. This includes confession which is similar yet different to the form practiced in the Latin Rite.
