What is it - Latin: Quadragesima, 'Fortieth' The 40 Days before easter NOT including Sundays is a period of preparation to remember the Lord's passion, death and resurrection and ultimate Celebration of his Resurrection during Easter. Why 40 days? Biblically 40 is normally the number associated with a time of testing, trial, penance, purification, and renewal. Additionally, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert in preparation for his public ministry. We are called to this season of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Catholics are also required to receive Holy Communion at least once a year and therefore must give a really good confession AT LEAST once a year prior to that reception of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Holy Communion reception must be done between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday Highly recommend the book: Deliverance prayers for the Laity which has an extremely thorough examination of conscious in the back. There are 3 tenants to Lent that we're supposed to dive into prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Prayer because obviously we are meant increase our prayer life and we will discuss more ways you can do that at the end of the episode. Almsgiving or giving of some sort of charity. Now this can be giving of time, talent or treasure to something, someone, somewhere to ultimately Glorifying God and furthering His kingdom. And fasting which is normally where people focus during lent. Giving up something. Fasting is a penitential exercise and penitential practices are normally lifted on a solemnity - a feast day of the highest rank. Fasting from a sin is not a fast, it's resisting sin. Fasting is a powerful tool used since the Old Testament. Fasting brings clarity in all areas and it is a light that shines in the dark places where hidden or unknown sin live. The fast is the penitential act that acknowledges our sins and seeks the mercy of God. What is a penance? After a valid confession your sins are forgiven BUT your sin still did damage to the body of Christ so we are called to make reparations for that. Catechism 1459 states, “Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much. But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his relationships with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused. Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins. This satisfaction is also called “penance.” Some penances, after confession could be a simple prayer or if you stole or wronged another human you could be told to repair that - ask forgiveness, admit your wrong, etc. During lent, however, we make sacrifices in penance for our self, our families, the whole of the Church, humanity as well as any transgressions on our part and the whole world. “THE Church's Canon law reaffirms the obligation to do penance – to interrupt the usual comforts of life, to rediscover in prayer the saving love of God, and to practice charity and justice towards those in need.” https://cgcatholic.org.au/catholic-voice/blog/lenten-penance-explained/ Matthew 6:16-18 clearly states that when we fast, we're supposed to do it without anyone else knowing it. Fasting & Abstinence: Required fasting is when you eat less in a day and abstaining is when you don't eat meat. Let's dive in. Fasting is required for Catholics who are 18-58 years old and it includes a limited fast which for the US means a single normal meal (think dinner with family) and 2 snacks. The 2 snacks should not equal the size of the one meal. Kids are not required to fast BUT we try to have them fast from something (not food). You are not required to fast if you have a medical condition (diabetes, hypoglycemia, etc) or in a season of pregnancy or breastfeeding that requires you to not fast from food. Abstinence from meat is required for Catholics who are 14+. In the Western Rite that is considered chicken, beef, pork but fish and shellfish, eggs, milk products and foods made using animal fat are okay. Eastern Rite that is anything that is made from or touches animal product - fish, eggs, milk products, and foods made using animal fat. They can eat shellfish because they're considered bugs? They often go completely vegan for the whole of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days we abstain from meat and fast from food. All fridays in lent we are called to abstain from meat (actually all fridays) Sundays we never fast or abstain because it's a solemnity which is the highest level of feast in the Church. Some people say that that means Sundays are not a day you need to “fast” from whatever you give up others say that because the fast is voluntary it's not *fasting* like those from food the Church calls us to so we should still keep it up on Sundays. We, as a family, make sundays a fun day where you do get to have that thing (in moderation). Jewish calendar counts days sunset to sunset so we like to relax our fast from Saturday evening until Sunday because then we can have family time Saturday night then refocus Sunday evening to get ready for school. Ideas for things to *give up* for Lent Only shopping small businesses & farmers markets Unnecessary spending Painting your nails, doing your hair, or makeup Going carnivore, going vegetarian, going pescatarian, going completely vegan Deserts or snacks Alcohol Eating out Secular music, podcasts, shows, youtube and movies - one or all Yelling or complaining - taking a deep breath before reacting/responding to anyone No phones until a certain time. No social media (have someone change your PW!) No youtube, tv, or music (embrace silence) Sleeping in or hitting snooze Things to take on Rosaries - try praying a rosary the first 15 min you are in the car any given time Pray a decade of a rosary for each child + your spouse each day. Blessed is She Lenten Study Catechism or Bible in a Year Spiritual Reading Daily masses Walks

On Friday, November 7, 1969, Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Roman Catholic Nun and English teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, MD, left her apartment to run errands and was never seen alive again. Two months later, Sister Cathy's body was discovered by two hunters in a wooded clearing approximately 5 miles from her home. Her killer was never found and her case remains unsolved today, but not for a lack of trying. Local police, Sister Cathy's family and former students have spend the last 5 decades trying to solve a mystery that goes much, much deeper than what we see on the surface. So deep, in fact, that you will not believe why so many people close to her believe Sister Cathy was murdered as part of a major coverup that is both scandalous and eye-opening.If you have any information on Cathy Cesnik's case, please contact the Baltimore City Homicide Unit through Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7-LOCKUP. That's 866-756-2587. A $2K reward for information leading to an arrest is still active in this case. After you listen to this episode, be sure to check out the 6-part Netflix series, The Keepers, that goes way beyond any of Deb and Shelbey's questions we have in this case, and see if you can help solve the case.Listen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! Hi Friends. In this episode of TBR Lowdown, Alyssa and Naomi:
This week’s unsolved homicide story is about the murder of a 20-year-old Houston woman named Shelbey Thornburgh. Shelbey eventually settled into a Houston apartment. She took a job as an escort. She told her family that it didn’t involve sexual relations with clients. However, Krystina had her doubts. She suspected her younger sister engaged in prostitution. She attempted to convince her younger sister to move to Alabama and give up prostitution. Shelbey told her sister that she couldn’t because she feared leaving her pimp. On November 4, 2015, Shelbey had arranged to meet with a client sometime in the evening. Hotel video surveillance showed the man enter and leave the apartment within 30 minutes. Kristina received an early morning phone call that her sister was deceased. She learned that someone had brutally murdered Shelbey. Her killer had slashed her throat and nearly decapitated her in the process. When Krystina visited her sister at the funeral home, she was horrified by what she saw. The funeral home had basically sewn Shelbey’s head onto the body. Seeing Shelbey’s body gave Krystina and indication of just how horrific her sister was murdered. Krystina has worked with a Youtuber named Gavin Fish who has worked with her to find out who killed Shelbey. Do you know anything about Shelbey's killer? Do you recognize him? If you know anything about Shelbey Thornburgh’s homicide, please contact Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). If you would like additional information about this case, please visit the Support Team Shelbey FB page. I have also included links to Gavin Fish. The Number 23 represents a lot of things. Basketball excellence. The number of licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop. The reason for murder. All great things, on the surface, until you dig a little deeper. That’s when you find out that EVERYTHING in your life is The Number 23, it’s the reason for the sun, the moon, your weird thoughts you think we don’t know about (we know). It’s also the reason for this episode because it’s a terrible movie starring Jim Carey! With special guest Shelbey, who Nick and Stephen continually banter over an hour, the group gets maniacally deep into one of Jim Carey’s few stinkers. They talk superstitions, Nick does what he’s best at (all the things he’s terrible at), and they talk for 23 minutes about the movie and 46 about absolutely anything else. Production note: This podcast has no liability if this episodes drives you literally insane.

Shelbey came to me wondering why she has the habit of overeating when she's alone and supposed to be studying. She sits down to eat and turns on the TV, planning to finish dinner and then hit the books. But instead she usually keeps eating through the entire show until she feel so sicks she can't do anything at all. To her credit Shelbey has already thought through possible psychological reasons she's doing this, but hasn't come up with any answers. She's a very hard working woman who is always pushing herself for self-improvement. She's a good student, exercises regularly, and meditates often. What she never does is give herself permission to relax. One of the symptoms of being too productive is having anxiety about down time. All humans need to relax and recharge both physically and mentally, but highly productive people often feel guilty and anxious about taking these much needed breaks. If this goes on for too long it can lead to avoidance behaviors like overeating. It can be difficult to acknowledge that rest is needed, but Shelbey and I come up with a plan for her to recognize her anxiety and give her the space to unwind.
