Today's Coaching Through Stories episode features Anthony Noto, the current CEO at SoFi, a unique finance company whose goal is to help clients “get their money right.” Anthony shares the challenges that helped shape him, the early failures and setbacks that propelled him to move forward, and how he goes about building a great culture. Anthony says the secret to success is to “work as hard as you can, do the right thing, and take care of others.” Anthony Noto is the former COO of Twitter and the former Co-Head of Global Telecommunications, Media and Technology Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs. He also served as the National Football League’s CFO and Executive Vice President for nearly three years. His past experience also includes his service as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Episode Highlights: Story that has a significant impact on Anthony’s life, values, and leadership philosophy How the challenges Anthony has experienced has helped shape him and his values The messaging of Anthony’s mom about being good enough Anthony’s thoughts on the dark side of the independent mindset The early failure and setbacks that has propelled Anthony to move forward What drives Anthony today How much Anthony tries to craft and control his professional life What Anthony learned about being a leader during his time as COO of Twitter How leaders should go about completing their visions and desires What keeps Anthony up at night and what gets in his skin as a leader Anthony’s leadership philosophy The mental and emotional skills Anthony believes are critical to becoming a great leader How Anthony manages himself and maintains his composure How Anthony creates a space for his emotions What Anthony did first in terms of culture when he first joined SoFi How Anthony goes about building a great culture Three Key Points: There’s a thin line between success and failure. Those that chase problems rather than run from them are more likely to succeed. To succeed as a leader, one needs to show composure, drive structure, and bring people together that are worried or scared. To be a great leader in uncertain times, you need to have the ability to keep everyone calm. What next? is a question we constantly ask ourselves as we help our young people navigate through the education system. As they get older and age out of the system, this question becomes more urgent and often the answer isn’t as easy to find. This week’s guests Adeel and Anthony asked that exact question and when no answer was obvious they created their own solution: Able Coffee Roasters. Able Coffee Roasters is on a mission to create sustainable paid employment for young people with additional needs. Through the use of innovative techniques like point of view video modeling and focusing on making accommodations so that each young person can excel at the tasks they are given, Able Coffee Roasters is answering for some young people the question of what next. What Anthony and Adeel are doing is not only inspiring because it has the potential to help so many young people on their journey to independence but is inspiring because it shows what is possible if we focus not on the question but on looking around for potential solutions in our own communities. My guest today is Anthony Rice, with whom I’ve been friends for a long time. He’s been creating art his whole life, with the female form being his muse. His passions have included many forms of art, but his recent craze centers around photography. Anthony has taken body painting to a new level with his “Transflections,” a digital mix of reflections and transformations that create other-wordly images, with each image being a unique mix of form, shapes, and color that can never be recreated. Join me to hear more of his story and his unusual artistry. TWEET: “Learn how @aricephoto is making his living from his #art and pushing his #creative boundaries!” What’s YOUR superpower? Have you ever thought about what your superpower is? Anthony explains how he pinpointed his superpower as being the natural instinct required to “figure things out.” He uses the example of how he created his first website back in 1996, when NO ONE knew how to do that! He says the key is to stay focused and keep at it until that light bulb moment happens. TWEET: “#Art takes a long time to be able to live off of it and put a roof over your head.” @transflexions Don’t be afraid of something NEW! Are you afraid when it comes to trying something new? Anthony explains his hopes for the future of his “Transflections,” with 3D intricate designs. He wants to do animation and morph the designs. He admits that he still has a lot to learn, but knows that this is where his future is headed, as he studies, does research, and learns more about the technique. TWEET: “Seeing that image on the wall that’s really nice, is my #reward.” @transflexions Where to focus next: Are you an artist or entrepreneur who needs to figure out that NEXT focus? Anthony knows his next steps are in promoting his work on social media and building his brand. He’s done the research and knows he has to get his name out there among the stiff competition. He has a goal to get more name recognition for A.Rice Photography and become a trending artist. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Be true to the idea or dream. At an early age, Anthony Lee was told he wouldn’t make anything of himself. He grew up in a poor family and was taught a poor kid from lower-middle class Alabama couldn’t rise up. Unlike most, he found a way to lift himself out. He worked hard, struggled, and built a business, selling his products through Amazon. In this episode of FailToLearn we talk about Anthony’s struggles and how they helped him get where he is today. What Anthony and I discuss: How Anthony was looking for a way to make money and get more from life. How he started trading commodities, and why it didn’t work for him. Why he wanted to use his trading skills to get a job at a big firm. How he practiced and made imaginary trades to test his skills. What he went through to open his first brokerage account. How quickly he lost his entire savings trading, and what happened after. Why he wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. Why he doesn’t compare trading in the market to gambling, even after losing everything. How Anthony view networking, and why it’s important to you. Why he changed his idea of success and was ready to settle for a job, until he came across copywriting. Why Anthony finds copywriting a critical skill. How he started importing products from China to sell on Amazon. How much credit card debt he piled up to start his import business, and his wife’s reaction when she found out. What he did when he realized how easy it is to sell on Amazon. How he got started selling on Amazon, and what he would do different today, if he was starting today. Why he said anyone with a physical store should be selling on Amazon. How Anthony is working to scale and sell his products in physical stores. How the fear of failure doesn’t go away. How he realized he could repeat his system. Why people who are entrepreneurial will always be entrepreneurial. Enjoy the show: The Challenges Don’t Go Away, They Just Get Different with Anthony Lee

A field manual for sales managers to up the entire team’s sales gameClick To Tweet How many potential customers exist in your territory? Do you know? Part of doing a good review of a sales professional’s strategy is to assess how many of the organization’s target clients exist within their sales territory. It’s a surefire way of understanding the breadth of the prospects the salesperson has to call and visit. Every sales manager should be able to instruct their sales force how to do that kind of assessment and make the most of the results. On this episode of In The Arena, Dave Brock walks through that type of assessment and explains how it helps the entire organization remain organized, active, and accountable. Sales accountability: The uncomfortable but needed asset in sales. Many sales organizations are lax when it comes to the kind of accountability that generates active pursuit of prospects and increase in sales revenue. One of the reasons accountability is such a difficult task for most sales managers is because they’ve not established clear expectations in terms of the number of leads in the sales pipeline, the timing and duration of the typical sales cycle, and what steps should be taken to move prospects through the cycle in a reasonable amount of time. Dave Brock lays it out for us on this episode.
