Episode 190: Vinovest Co-Founder & CEO talks about quitting college to launch venture-backed companies, his spinal cord injury, and building a platform to invest in wine. Guest Biography Anthony Zhang is only 25 but has already successfully built and sold two companies, secured funding from Mark Cuban and Mark Burnett, and received a Thiel fellowship grant. Not only that, but he has worked hard to come back from a devastating accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. The Los Angeles Business Journal recently described him as “the epitome of a dogged entrepreneur.” Anthony is now the founder and CEO of his third company: Vinovest, a platform that has been described as “the Robinhood of wine investing” and is making it easier for more people to access this wealth-building asset class. Fine wine enjoys low correlation with global equities markets, and has largely outperformed the S&P 500 over the past four decades, which makes it an ideal shelter in times of volatility. However, a number of factors have made this lucrative asset class largely inaccessible to the average retail investor— high account minimums, a lack of wine expertise, concerns about fraud, and the excessive costs associated with storing and insuring wine. Vinovest is helping investors to overcome these barriers to entry, and is democratizing access to fine wine investing. In this episode, you'll learn: What it was like pitching Mark Cuban and Mark Burnett as a college student. Different motivations for starting companies from food delivery to rating VCs. Why Anthony wants to bring wine investing to everyone and believes it's an alternative asset class worth considering. Anthony Mann has been in the real estate industry for over 14 years. He has 13 years of experience in investing, flipped over 200 homes and currently owns 43 properties. During his tenure as an agent, he has sold more than 1,000 REO and short sale properties in the Long Island, New York market. He was able to get into a niche field within the industry, where there are less than 15 active REO agents. In that market, he was the youngest by nearly 20 years. Anthony has seen many markets and new technology emerge without any true benefit to agents. So, he decided to make a change in the industry and launched AM Open House, the best digital sign-in app for Open Houses, in July of 2014. Anthony has dedicated his entire focus to the AM Open House app and management platform to make the lives of agents easier while supplying them with the technology they want and can benefit from using. Over the years, Anthony has helped over 125,000 agents do better business. Founding A Social Strategy in 2016 was a milestone for Anthony, as he has always had a passion for helping businesses grow through marketing and advertising. Currently, A Social Strategy handles advertising for numerous real estate agents and brokers, mortgage professionals, and businesses that need help generating qualified appointments and showings while eliminating the busy work for the professionals. The team at A Social Strategy handles everything for agents so they can focus on what they do best – sell more homes! What you'll learn about in this episode: How Anthony got started in real estate in 2007, right before the crash of 2008, and how it impacted his business as a residential real estate agent Why Anthony's 2008 reckoning pushed him to get into real estate investing through the foreclosure market How the first deal Anthony did helped him explode into the market and hit the ground running, and why the 2008 crash was the push he needed How Anthony pivoted into real estate tech, and why he loves working in every aspect of the real estate market How Anthony recognized that the retainer agency model for real estate lead generation was becoming oversaturated and how he saw an opportunity to do things differently How Anthony's system puts their clients in complete control, and how the new model has been hugely profitable and created win-wins for Anthony's team and clients How Anthony's system can work for agents or investors interchangeably and can work in just about any real estate market What's next for Anthony and his team, and why Anthony is focusing on growing out what he's doing now and expanding his team Why Anthony believes that prices today are out of control and that we're in the midst of a massive real estate bubble and that a correction is coming Resources: Website: https://zeroretainer.com/ Website: http://redisclosures.com/ Website: www.asocialstrategy.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/anthonymann85 Instagram: @themann85 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/anthonymann/ Twitter: @anthonymann Additional resources: Real Estate on Your Terms by Chris Prefontaine SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/webinar SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/ebook SmartRealEstateCoach.com/QLS Smart Real Estate Coach Podcast Sponsor: Paul G. We instead are the tree that creates those branches. The importance of sitting with yourself and having tough conversations to start to download the right type of software in your brain.Often times, we don't go into the "cave" for fear of a monster, but it's inside that cave where the treasure is.  Once we reach that treasure, we unlock something great. On today’s Liz's Healthy Table podcast, we’re talking about foods, nutrition, and dietary supplements that support a healthy immune system. What does science say about vitamins D, C, A, and E? What about zinc? Why is a diet rich in fruits and vegetables more important now than ever as we deal with a global pandemic? And why are the elderly at greater risk for nutritional deficiencies? Join me as we dive into these topics and more, including why you’ll never hear me claim that anything can "boost" your immune system. (I prefer the term, "support.") Anthony Thomas, Ph.D., is a Nutrition Researcher and Director of Scientific Affairs at Jarrow Formulas in Los Angeles. Anthony evaluates research for ingredient use in dietary supplement formulations, including dosing and usage recommendations to reflect scientifically supported benefits. He has authored and co-authored multiple published peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and served as peer reviewer with relevant expertise in the field of nutrition and metabolism for multiple scientific journals.  Anthony is an avid user of dietary supplements, but he believes strongly that diet and physical activity come first. You may remember Anthony from last year’s two-part series on probiotics. If you scroll down, you'll find those links.  Show Highlights: Updates on Anthony’s family, which includes a new baby girl To put diet and immunity in perspective, Anthony doesn’t use the phrase “boost immunity,” but thinks of diet and supplements as things that reinforce and prime immunity How macronutrients and micronutrients are the building blocks for cellular function With Anthony’s “food first” approach, nutrition supplements are one tool to support immunity and overall health Other lifestyle factors that affect immunity include stress management, sleep, and physical activity The role of a healthy immune system and how it relates to COVID-19 Why the elderly and people who suffer from obesity tend to have higher rates of nutrient deficiency, and may be more susceptible to COVID-19 How to get more calcium, vitamin D, and zinc into your diet Why eating for immunity is not an “all-or-nothing” proposition (a weekend cheat meal won’t blow it for you!) Protein’s role in a healthy immune system How fruits and vegetables (and vitamins A and C) are critical for fighting infections Anthony’s thoughts on the role of probiotics in immune function The scoop on turmeric, garlic, and ginger as they relate to immunity Why elderberry and mushroom supplements could be important during times of higher stress and vulnerability Why Anthony says everyone could benefit from taking vitamin D supplements The benefits of zinc supplementation The supplements that Anthony takes every day or every other day: vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics Takeaways we’ve learned from the global pandemic: “We weren’t well-prepared, but we can learn and be better prepared for the next one with our diet and strategic supplementation.” A final question: Does a healthy immune system reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 or improve our outcome?

I have several friends who I would consider to be VIP's, bigwigs, and leading authorities in the field of health and biohacking. Although I will respectfully keep those friends anonymous, I've noted that a relatively large majority of them have one specific man who serves as their personal physician, and he's the same guy who advises some of the world's top military personnel, Spartans, strongmen competitors and obstacle racers. That man is Dr. Anthony Beck, and he's my guest on today's podcast. As a physician who has practiced Functional Medicine for over 20 years and backed by 10’s of thousands of patient encounters, Dr. Anthony G. Beck doesn’t merely manage diseases ~ he helps people resolve them. Dr. Beck has earned 4 national medical board certifications, is the founder and chief medical officer for Balance Protocol Institute, is the founder and CEO of Helion Nutraceuticals and provides philanthropic care for combat veterans through groups such as Warrior Angles Foundation, Millennium TBI Network and Task Force Dagger Foundation. With extensive education in many clinical disciplines such as Functional Medicine, clinical nutrition, systems biology, epigenetics and nutrigenomics, he takes a dynamic approach to assessing, educating, and working with his patients to achieve their highest levels of wellbeing. Dr. Beck’s programs involve a full array of aspects including optimizing ones environment of (air, water, light, sound, EMF), healthful lifestyle design, individualized nutrition, hormone balancing, resolving immune dysfunction, identifying hidden infectious diseases, as well as leveraging extensive laboratory and functional testing to assist patients to determine their biochemical individuality. Even more importantly, Dr. Beck wants to empower patients to demand a higher level of care from their health care providers. So not only is Dr. Beck a wealth of knowledge on advanced health tactics, medical testing, and the combination of biohacking and exercise performance, but he's also the mastermind behind a hydration tactic I've personally been experimenting with: a tiny hydration invention called Oral I.V. - which we explore in great detail in the episode "The Physician Who Personally Advises The World's Leading Health Authorities, And His Tiny Invention That Pro Athletes Swear By." Lately, Dr. Beck has been quite pesky and informative on my own Facebook page - on topics about everything from mushrooms to methylation - so I figured I'd invite him on the show to take a deep dive into some of these controversial topics he has a unique perspective on, including: Psychedelics Lectins Energy Medicine Devices Dietary waters vs pH effect on body EMF devices for health and their consequences During our discussion, you'll discover: -Anthony's fascinating morning routine that includes near infrared, far infrared and photobiomodulation... [00:11:10] -Why Anthony only takes certain supplements during certain seasons, and how he determines that... [00:22:29] -Why Anthony has his Spartan athletes eat differently at different latitudes and why you can eat more fruits and raw vegetables in the spring and summer... [00:30:53] -Why you don't really need to worry about the pH of the water that you drink, and whether carbonated water will really damage your teeth... [00:38:43] -Why Dr. Beck believes the whole Plant Paradox "lectins are bad for you" argument is a bad hypothesis... [00:50:01] -Dr. Beck's favorite self-quantification tests and why... [00:51:19] -The reason Dr. Beck doesn't use cannabidiol based on the RS1135840 and RS1065852... [00:58:00] -All the damage that Dr. Beck has seen 'shrooms do and the damage they can cause... It should not come as a surprise that some of the most important things in life are the most basic. Civility is one of those things that is essential to maintaining and building great relationships with others but is often cast aside for the sake of attaining goals at the expense of those relationships. In this conversation, Anthony talks with Christine Porath, author of the new book “Mastering Civility.” Her insights into the human condition and the things that drive us to be not only uncivil but downright petty reveal the foundational things that we need to come to grips with in order to begin building healthy company cultures rather than toxic ones. Overcoming Toxic Culture Through Mastering Civility, with Christine Porath - Episode #99Click To Tweet The fundamentals of civility are so basic but also so seldom done No one would argue against civility being one of the foundational practices that undergird healthy human relationships. Yet, it is one of the things that is most quickly cast aside when it comes to dealing with others in hierarchical structures like companies and chains of command. Christine Porath is convinced that a return to civility will enable toxic cultures to be made healthy and poor performing teams be made into record-breakers. This conversation is full of insight so be sure you take the time to listen. Learning to listen is one of the best ways to chip away at a toxic culture All of us have a cell phone. We leave it sitting on the desk during meetings and we even take it to the bathroom with us. We think of it as a tool but it often becomes a distraction that keeps us from truly listening to the people we meet face-to-face every day. Christine Porath points out how new habits - like removing our cell phone from the desk - can help us listen in ways that begin to chip away at the toxic cultures within our companies and organizations. Find out how Kristine suggest we go about making these kinds of fundamental changes, on this episode of in the arena. Learning to listen is one of the best ways to chip away at a toxic culture @PorathCClick To Tweet Connection has to come first before effective leadership can happen Effective leadership is a goal for most CEOs and managers, but it can seem very elusive and difficult to attain. Christine Porath says that effective leadership hinges on personal connection much more than it does leadership techniques or principles. Her conviction is that those who learn to connect with the people they lead will be much more effective in their leadership, and research is bearing out that conviction. Christine shares basic steps toward greater connection with the people around us in this conversation with Anthony. Why we don’t give others the benefit of the doubt but always give ourselves the benefit of the doubt You may or may not have noticed it, but one of the behaviors that almost every human being is guilty of is giving the benefit of the doubt to ourselves but not giving the benefit of the doubt to others. At the tail end of this conversation, Anthony and his guest, Christine Porath talk about how to overcome the unconscious stereotypes and judgments we make about people without knowing all the facts, and the benefits that a “benefit of the doubt” mindset can have in building a company culture that is sympathetic and supportive of the people in it. Why we don’t give others the benefit of the doubt but always give ourselves the benefit of the doubt @PorathCClick To Tweet Outline of this great episode [0:44] Why Anthony invited Christine to be on the show to talk about her book, “Mastering Civility” [2:40] The personal experiences that pushed Christine to write about civility [4:04] What makes for a toxic work environment and what impact does it have? [9:34] Everyone is watching the leader to know how to behave within the organization [11:13] The fundamentals of civility that are basic, but not done

At an early age, Anthony Lee was told he wouldn’t make anything of himself. He grew up in a poor family and was taught a poor kid from lower-middle class Alabama couldn’t rise up. Unlike most, he found a way to lift himself out. He worked hard, struggled, and built a business, selling his products through Amazon. In this episode of FailToLearn we talk about Anthony’s struggles and how they helped him get where he is today. What Anthony and I discuss: How Anthony was looking for a way to make money and get more from life. How he started trading commodities, and why it didn’t work for him. Why he wanted to use his trading skills to get a job at a big firm. How he practiced and made imaginary trades to test his skills. What he went through to open his first brokerage account. How quickly he lost his entire savings trading, and what happened after. Why he wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. Why he doesn’t compare trading in the market to gambling, even after losing everything. How Anthony view networking, and why it’s important to you. Why he changed his idea of success and was ready to settle for a job, until he came across copywriting. Why Anthony finds copywriting a critical skill. How he started importing products from China to sell on Amazon. How much credit card debt he piled up to start his import business, and his wife’s reaction when she found out. What he did when he realized how easy it is to sell on Amazon. How he got started selling on Amazon, and what he would do different today, if he was starting today. Why he said anyone with a physical store should be selling on Amazon. How Anthony is working to scale and sell his products in physical stores. How the fear of failure doesn’t go away. Tilting Downstream: Differentiating Your Sales Approach With Customer Risk In Mind with Niraj Dawar – Episode 42

In the Arena

Sales is the act of helping people solve problems. It only makes sense that the best salespeople are the ones who are able to best solve the problems their customers have. But how exactly do you determining if you or your competitors is doing the “best” job at that? On this episode of In the Arena you’re going to get one of the most significant parts of the equation explained to you clearly from Niraj Dawar, author of the powerful sales book, “Tilt.” Anthony digs into the concepts of differentiation and customer risk in this conversation, two concepts that can literally transform the way you do sales and the success you experience. You’ve got to hear this one. Are you asking the questions that enable you to differentiate your sales process?Click To Tweet What are “upstream” and “downstream” activities in the sales process? Niraj Dawar makes a clear distinction between what he calls the “upstream” and “downstream” activities involved in the sales cycle because he believes that clearly seeing and understanding the difference is one of the main ways that salespeople are able to focus more on customer needs and bring the features and benefits of their products to bear on those needs. Anthony and Niraj unpack that idea in their conversation on this episode, showing you how a focus on the “downstream” side of sales (the part that’s aimed at understanding customer needs and risks) to amplify your sales presentations and approach. Why competing on price and cutting cost can only go so far. We’ve all seen the “race to the bottom” that happens when two companies with identical products or services begin to compete on price. For the sake of getting new business each begins to cut costs wherever they can, lowering the price as an enticement to the customer to purchase from them. There’s nothing that makes one company stand out over the other except the issue of pricing. How do you get out of that cycle and make your offer stand out even if the price you’re asking is higher? It’s by differentiating yourself in ways specific to the needs of the customer. On this episode you’re going to learn the key questions you need to ask in order to do that. The most important sales book of 2015, with Niraj Dawar on this episode of In The ArenaClick To Tweet Why understanding and addressing customer risk can increase your sales. Your customers have a job to do and they are looking to your product or service to help them get that job done. But whether or not they tap you as the one to provide what they need depends on many things beyond price. They’ve got specific risks or costs inherent to the project at hand and the better you understand what those are, the better able you will be to position your product in a way that addresses those risks effectively, resulting in the sale - and the confidence of your customers over the long haul. Find out how to move your sales process in that direction on this episode of In The Arena with Anthony Iannarino. How Hyundai increased sales during a dramatic period of economic recession. One of the stories that Niraj Dawar recounts in his book, “Tilt” is the story of how Hyundai made some dramatic decisions during a steep economic downturn that actually increased their sales when the rest of the competition experienced serious losses. The approach they took is an example of what Niraj points to as the key in making your sales offerings stand out among the competition even when financial consideration for the prospective customer are at a very serious level. You’ll learn a lot from this episode, so be sure to listen. Increasing sales even in the midst of a recession, on this episode of In The ArenaClick To Tweet Outline of this great episode [0:46]  Anthony’s introduction of Niraj Dawar and the conversation on this episode.
