"If you look at the value increases in bitcoin, it is this punctuated equilibrium where it is steady, steady, steady," Cameron Winklevoss told The National earlier this month. The Winklevoss Twins case for a $500,000 Bitcoin price was strengthened by the numerous applications for spot Bitcoin ETF's made by several traditional finance giants, including BlackRock, Fidelity, Valkyrie, WisdomTree, and Invesco over the past few weeks. Cameron Winklevoss took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the recent spot BTC ETF filings: "The Great Accumulation of bitcoin has begun. Anyone watching the flurry of ETF filings understands the window to purchase pre-IPO bitcoin before ETFs go live and open the floodgates is closing fast. If bitcoin was the most obvious and best investment of the previous decade, this will likely be the most obvious and best trade of this decade." Learn more about your ad choices. Arshay Cooper is a Rower, Bestselling and Award-winning Author, A 2x Golden Oar recipient for his contributions to the sport of rowing, a motivational speaker, activist, and the protagonist of the film, A Most Beautiful Thing. (Executive produced by Academy-Award and Grammy winner Common, NBA stars Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade, the Winklevoss Twins, and Olympian Mary Mazzio). Arshay grew up on the West Side of Chicago in a community surrounded by gangs and drugs. In 1997 he joined (and later became captain of) the country's first All-Black high school rowing team at Manley High School, an experience that changed his life. He then dedicated two years of his life to AmeriCorps, focusing on DEI, and soon after that attended Le Cordon Bleu, becoming a personal chef for World Wrestling Entertainment, Warner Brothers film sets, and professional athletes. After years as an entrepreneur in the food service industry, Arshay returned to his true passion: working with young people. He founded the NY East Side Rowing Club and worked as the national youth program guidance counselor for Victory Outreach International. Arshay also helped start several rowing programs for low-income youth across the country, anywhere a puddle of water exists, so that other young people can experience the profound change that can happen on the water. Arshay is the founder of the National Award-Winning Non-Profit, The A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund, which introduces thousands of under-resourced youth to the sport of rowing. Arshay's mission has sparked the MLK Day of Service “DAY ON'' for collegiate and high school sports teams across the country and community rowing events between local police and community members. Arshay's message has spread all across the world, speaking for the members of Congress, the NBA and WNBA, the NAACP, the Obama Foundation, the Congressional Black Caucus, and professional sports teams (including the Oakland A's, the Atlanta Hawks, the Miami Dolphins, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Chicago Bulls). The British, New Zealand, Australian, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Egyptian, Turkish, Canadian, and other Olympic teams are supporting Arshay and the film profoundly, including creating new charitable organizations and initiatives with underserved communities. Universities and athletic directors across the United States (from Morehouse and other HBCU institutions to the University of Washington to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) are all hosting events with Arshay. Arshay has spoken at UPS, Bank of America, Target, JP Morgan, Delta Airlines, Starbucks, Microsoft, and many other companies hosting conversations around the film, digging into access and opportunity, and the importance of bringing people together. James Seyffart is an analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence covering ETFs. In this interview, we discuss the how and why of ETFs, Grayscale's legal battle with the SEC over the approval of a Bitcoin ETF, and the complexities of Grayscale implementing a redemption program for GBTC. We also talk about the role of the SEC in regulating Bitcoin and Gary Gensler's political ambitions. - - - - In two months' time, it will be the 10-year anniversary of the Winklevoss Twins making the first submission to the SEC for a Bitcoin spot ETF. When the SEC rejected this in 2017, it seemed as though it was a temporary blip, and that a US Bitcoin spot ETF would inevitably be approved. And yet, the SEC has rejected a raft of subsequent applications, and many more sit in Gary Gensler's inbox awaiting a decision. Grayscale has decided to test the SEC's stance in court. Whilst there are various opinions as to the underlying motivation for Grayscale taking on this case, there is no doubt that this is the best test of the SEC's current intransigence in relation to a Bitcoin spot ETF. Bloomberg Intelligence's James Seyffart, an ETF expert, provides his informed opinion on the current status of Grayscale's case, the likelihood of the SEC losing the case, and whether this will affect the SEC's position of a Bitcoin spot ETF. He also sets out why the SEC is so reluctant to approve what many in the community believe would open up Bitcoin to a new massive wave of adoption.
“The judges might issue a ruling that says, “You violated the APA. You did not treat situations alike.” And then say, “Go back to the drawing board.” And then the SEC could then just deny for other reasons... If you've heard the name Winklevoss, it's likely that you've watched the movie The Social Network. The movie featured a memorable depiction of the Harvard twins and Olympic rowers who sued Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly stealing their idea for a social network. Or you might know that Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss set up a crypto exchange called Gemini, which is currently involved in a very public dispute with the folks over at Genesis. Both Genesis and Gemini - We know, so many G names - are facing serious allegations from US regulators about their products and services. Or you might be familiar with their cover band, Mars Junction. Tyler's the lead singer; Cameron jams on guitar. The twins certainly lead a very interesting life - and according to the Bloomberg Wealth tracker, they're worth billions of dollars. That wealth comes in part from their early adoption of digital assets like Bitcoin - when they settled out of court with Zuckerberg, for around $65 million, they put some of their assets into crypto. To break down what's up with the Winklevoss twins and their presence in digital assets, Bloomberg reporter Olga Kharif joins this episode.
