Training your bird for transportation isn't just an important part of education programming, it's a good life skill to have. For wildlife rehabilitation organizations, nature centers, and other small bird of prey centers, this is an essential skill that trainers rely on. For companion parrot people, this is an important behavior to trainer before it is needed in case of emergencies. This episode is an excerpt from our roadmap on Your Bird's First Education Program inside the Avian Behavior Lab. It's full of tactical advice on how to shape calm behavior for riding comfortably in a crate in a vehicle. We talk about what to do about tidbitting, why we don't use food very much to shape this behavior, and what we use to reinforce with instead. We discuss challenges with equipment and how to use context to shape the behavior. Support courses in the Avian Behavior Lab include our latest updated version of Crate Training, the roadmap, Creating a Training Program, and How to use context to shape a behavior.

In the Chesapeake Bay and across the state, a rich array of turtle species call Maryland home. But turtles are in danger because of the effects of climate change and destruction of their natural environment. A 2022 study from Tel Aviv University found 58% of the world's turtle species are threatened by extinction. World Turtle Day was created in 1990 as an annual observance to help people celebrate these beloved animals and protect their vanishing habitats around the world. Kerry Wixted, program manager with the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, joined us to discuss Maryland's turtles and their habitats. Wixted is also a former Wildlife Education and Outreach Specialist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Wixted is set to speak during The Natural History Society of Maryland's celebration of World Turtle Day this Sunday, May 21. Host Gail Buhl invites Partners For Wildlife podcast producer Kirk Klocke to step out of the booth and onto the mic to discuss public outreach, which is a big part of his role as the new P4W Outreach Specialist. Gail and Kirk quickly realize in the course of their back and forth about issues around public outreach communications & education that this discussion can spin off into deep dives across multiple areas, ranging from social media best practices, to how best to help staff and volunteers interact with the public, to a big elephant in the room that is explaining who we are, what we do, and what we don't do as rehabilitators. Gail's book recommendation as a tool to help explain some of the more sensitive aspects of wildlife rehabilitation, including answering that question: why bother rehabilitating prey species like rabbits and deer?Pass The Energy, Please! / Barbara Shaw McKinney (2000)Special thanks to Partners For Wildlife and The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Nicolette Canzoneri has a Masters of Science in Environmental Sciences, focusing on free-choice learning and behaviour change. Her thesis, Theory of Action for Pro-Environmental Behavior Change at Zoos and Aquariums, uncovered gaps in program design and implementation where zoos targeted conservation-focused behaviour change in their human zoo visitors. These gaps Nicolette discovered were common for many AZA-accredited institutions and served as the basis for creating her new venture EnvARK. Nicolette also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis, as well as an Associate of Science in Exotic Animal Training & Management, Animal Behavior, and Wildlife Education. My guest for this episode is Rebecca Richman. Rebecca is a Senior Research Specialist at Morris Animal Foundation. She is also an artist and owns an art studio called studio d'Une. Her goal through her art is to celebrate our love for nature! She has been part of the Morris Animal Foundation for 12 years. As an artist, Rebecca strongly supports conservation. Here is what she says: “Fluid, viable relationships bring into focus the connection of one life to another, and the ways in which we impact our planet and are impacted by it. I create images that reveal the inherent bond between species and ecosystems, people and the natural world.” In this episode we discuss her work within the foundation and how her art participates to conservation. Rebecca explains how she educates people through her art work from bugs, hummingbirds to darters and aquatic pollution. Every educational message can be painted and a visual is more impactful than a talk! A little bit of information about Morris Animal Foundation. It is a global leader in supporting scientific research that advances veterinary medicine related to health and quality of life for dogs, cats, horses and wildlife around the world . The studies so far granted have led to better preventions, diagnostic tools, treatment protocols and even cures for what ails the world's animals. Some of these breakthroughs have become industry gold standards and are used in every veterinary practice in the United States. Without further due, it is my great pleasure to welcome my guest Rebecca. Hope you enjoy the travel. https://www.studiodune.com/ https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/ https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/article/fostering-wildlife-conservation-through-art
Probably the best way to swoop in and do a show that explores birds of prey in Indiana is to invite, as a guest, a wildlife expert who travels across the state accompanied by an assortment of live birds for educational purposes. Mark Booth, the director of Indianapolis-based Take Flight! Wildlife Education, will be Nelson's guest to share insights about various species of birds of prey. And to dispel misconceptions about them. Hawks, falcons, owls and vultures will be among the birds that we spotlight during our show with Mark, who does outreach programs at schools, museums, clubs and nature centers. This month he has been making appearances, along with some of his birds of prey, at the Indiana State Fair. "Are they in a bad mood?" Mark asked his audience during a recent presentation, referring to the glaring stare that's often associated with hawks. As Mark spoke, he was accompanied by a red-tailed hawk, which did seem to be, well, glaring. "No, it's not a bad mood. Hawks find food by their eyesight. They look like that (glare) to keep the sun out of their eyes."

Welcome to CRCS Outdoors! If you were ever wondering who we are and what we do, here is a brief report. CRCS stands for Cuba-Rushford Central School and the outdoor program is an extension of our Fisheries and Wildlife Technology classes. Our motto is making a difference “one young hunter (fisherman or student) at a time. “ In 2011-12, the schools environmental programs were featured in national magazines and television. CRCS Outdoors was featured every Saturday morning on the Pursuit Channel with 26 original shows produced right at CRCS and highlighted graduating film editor Cody Card. However, the programming would not have made it on air without support from our outstanding sponsors KA-BAR Knives, Western & Central New York Chapter of SCI, and the TRI State Chapter of SCI! As we all know the future of our hunting and fishing heritage rests in the hands of our nation’s youth. If we do not do our part and get them out there early, research says all may be lost. New York State has been slowly doing their part by lowering the hunting age and providing youth seasons. CRCS Outdoors has been making a conscious effort to do our part by providing area youth with opportunities that they may not get elsewhere. CRCS Outdoors hopes to expand nationally and bring the study of fisheries and wildlife/ hunting and fishing into the mainstream of the nation’s educational platform, and to promote student centered scientific research, studying natural resource conservation, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, land stewardship, biology/ management and conservation, Math/ Science and Technology, GIS, satellite images, remote sensing, radio telemetry, data collection and analysis. Through these opportunities students are also exposed to numerous career development opportunities as well as gaining ownership in what they do through choice in what they learn and gaining responsibility. CRCS Outdoors has traveled to South Africa to hunt, as well as anual trips to Alaska, New Zealand, Texas, and locally around NYS and PA. The members of the Wabashiki Turtle Research and Rescue Group have been working hard to get an eco-passage built under highway 40/150 at West Terre Haute so that the various species of turtles and other wildlife can safely migrate from the Wabashiki protected wetlands to the large privately owned lake to the north. Sadly many turtles are smashed on the highway and those that make it past the highway often find themselves trapped between the railroad tracks where they are baked alive in their own shells. The members of the Wabashiki Turtle Research and Rescue Group have been rescueing as many turtles as possible from this gruesome fate. In response to their efforts, the Indiana Department of Transportation has erected two TURTLE CROSSING signs at the location. There is still a lot of work to be done.
