Today's #podcast I had the pleasure of speaking to @dom_strebs22 a #studentathlete at @stjoesny where he plays for the @sjli_golf & @sjli_rollerhockey teams. He was diagnosed at the age of 11 with #langerhanscellhistiocytosis and went through three years of #chemotherapy due to brain tumors. Growing up he loved playing #soccer & #hockey but after going thru chemo he found a love for #golf which was a great distraction and got his #competitive juices flowing again. His experiences at a young age motivated him to found @betterdaysgolfco lifestyle brand whose mission is to spread strength and resiliency to impact the world in a positive way through the creation of athletic apparel. A portion of the proceeds goes to @taylorshopefoundation which creates memorable and exciting experiences for chemotherapy patients to make their days brighter. Dominick says every day is a blessing and better than the day before. A great piece by @n12jamiestuart sheds light on his love of golf. He is a Junior at St. Joseph's University and wants to be a middle school #history teacher after graduation. A star-struck roller hockey player from Florida went to a practice in Michigan and caught the eye of the coach of one of the top AAA teams in the US, even to this day.Noah moved to Michigan at the age of 14 and began his hockey career with Compuware, which led him to a spot on the USNTP. Winning Gold with Team USA at the Gretzky/Hlinka Cup, and having his stick in the Hockey Hall Of Fame, are just two of his major accomplishments.Babin battled through depression and earned a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, only to have his career cut short by an injury. Now as a coach, he uses what he learned to help hockey players with the same aspirations he once had.

New Jersey's hockey history continued through the Rockin' Rollers of the RHI who formed right as our ice hockey-leaning Devils were hitting their stride as a perennial contender. On episode #163 I welcome the founders from two of Britain's brightest food and beverage challenger brands: Dan Broughton, co-founder of Dalston's Soda Co & Emily Fitch-Deeley, co-founder of Fitch Brew Co They are both part of a burgeoning scene. 10 years or so ago quality products weren’t as accessible. But since then there’s been a street food revolution, the evolution of gin, and the craft beer movement. Both believe in making something with higher-quality, natural ingredients, and therefore less of the sugar or artificial sweeteners relied upon to flavour mainstream products. The “Innocent and Fever-Tree effect”, has more recently led to a boom in investment in small, creative drinks companies and people have cottoned on to the fact that there is money to be made in small food and drink businesses if it’s done correctly. Regular listeners to this show will have heard me champion the likes of Ugly Drinks, Pip & Nut, Jimmy's Iced Coffee, Rejuvenation Water, and more recently, Nix & Kix and Double Dutch Drinks. Dan has nearly 20 years in the industry behind him, working for the likes of Cadbury's and Green & Black's whilst Emily has worked for Pernod and Brewdog. I got together with Dan and Emily to chat about: The shift in perception of the benefits of alcoholic v non-alcoholic drinks Sustainability Transparency The health-driven benefits of non-alcoholic drinks Where Gen Z & Millenials meet - and their choice of drinks Roller Hockey - and dislocated shoulders A massive thanks to all who entered our August contest to win a day out with myself and the team at Entrepreneur Summit 2019 in Bournemouth. You can still rate and review the show at anytime - something which I'm always eternally grateful for, and which always gets a shout-out from me. Entrepreneur Summit 2019 is the centrepiece of the year for everything Screw It, Just Do It, a chance for the online community to get together physically. To see and hear some of our interviewee's in the flesh, to ask their own questions - instead of just mine - and share a once-a-year experience together. I've outdone myself with the line-up, you can see it in full here. Back to today's show. I really enjoyed chatting with Dan and Emily about the challenges they face as challenger brands in the FMCG category and believe you will do so too. Let's StartUp!

How many of you were given roller skates as a child? And how many gave up after falling over a few times? There is a company based in Portobello whose mission is to change our minds and get people, adults as well as children, back on skates again. United Sk8s is run out of Tribe Porty and is the brainchild of founder, James Hunter. He insists there’s a lot more to this sport than just rolling up and down the Prom. In fact, most of what he offers takes place indoors – including Roller Disco! Porty Podcast Producer, David Calder, met up with James to find out more.To get an idea of what it's like, look here:https://youtu.be/BTCf7D89FyE orhttps://youtu.be/SI6SM0UPwMk
Richard Neil Graham (Wheelers, Dealers, Pucks & Bucks: A Rocking History of Roller Hockey International) joins the big show to delve into the 1990s summertime indoor league started by inveterate sports entrepreneur (and defunct sports patron saint) Dennis Murphy – designed to profit from major arena owners’ desire for summer events, minor league players looking for extra work, and a budding national craze for inline skating. Despite deep pockets from several team and arena owners from the NBA and NHL – including Los Angeles’ Buss family (previous Murphy partners in World Team Tennis two decades earlier), and Howard Baldwin (an original franchise owner in the Murphy-founded World Hockey Association in 1972) – the bulk of RHI franchises were decidedly less capitalized or marketing-savvy. That didn’t stop the league from aggressive expansion, however, from an inaugural 1993 roster of 12 teams to a mind-boggling 24 franchises the following season (and diligent listeners to this podcast know how ambitious moves like those often turn out). Predictably, by RHI’s sixth and final campaign in 1999 (after taking 1998 off to reorganize), the league was down to eight clubs and barely made it to season’s end. National TV coverage on a fledgling ESPN2, solid fan enthusiasm in places like Anaheim (the Bullfrogs regularly drew 10,000+ fans a game to the new Arrowhead Pond), innovative rules adjustments (five-a-side teams and no blue lines, to open up space and scoring), and even a novel proprietary puck designed to generate long-term sustainable licensing revenues, were not enough to sustain RHI into the new millennium. Ray brings a ton of energy to the show and we talk about living your dream, doing the opposite, and injecting fun into your work day. Introduction: Hey everyone and welcome to the All-Star Leader Podcast, where together we learn about leadership from the best and brightest, and keep it fun by connecting it to our passion for sports! Today we are joined by Ray Matz, an entrepreneur, author, speaker, coach and hockey player. In fact his is a three-time World Champion in the sport of Roller Hockey. You can see his work, including a podcast of his own, over at gamechangingdads.com This is Ray Matz. Hey Ray thanks for coming on the show!erview Questions: First off why don't you share a little about yourself and what you're up to. Started gamechangingdads two years ago after attending the Dan Miller leadership seminar Loves pouring into fathers and husbands and coaching them through life You were a hockey player in college and your early years; talk to us about that experience and how it has impacted who you are today. Born/raised in Kensington, PA The Philadelphia Flyers were on their way to winning the Stanley Cup, and it was a beacon of positivity among difficult circumstances Hockey was always in him. Played junior A hockey up in Canada, and realized the hard work/talent of those teams were incredible. Seven years later, high school friend called him and asked him to play roller hockey. Enjoyed the sport immediately and then made the US championship team Gave him the opportunity to train teams in other countries And you've since coached kids as an instructor at the Team USA Hockey Clinics; what has that experience been like and what leadership skills or techniques do you tend to use with the kids that carries over into the other areas of your life? Peter Dale was a teammate, and he asked Ray to help Great experience to give back Important to lead by example; coaches and kids are looking up at him You owned a landscaping business for many years; what was that like and what did you discover then about how to lead people? Started his first business at 19; always encouraged by parents to do their own thing Got into real estate in Vegas Then vending company Just walking through and learning Then got involved with a network marketing company and was pushed toward growing in his leadership through books by John Maxwell and Robert Kiwosaki (what about risk taking?) He and mom had a talk, and she told him he would be criticized and people would say he's crazy. Mom would affirm him then when this happened. The more criticism you get the more successful you'll be Girlfriend didn't want him driving her around in his truck since it had his name on it We're getting too comfortable like in a lazy river at the water park The older he gets, the more inspired he is to go do stuff! Parenting is something we touch on now and again on this show. I know you both teach and speak on parenting, and are raising three kids of your own. What advice do you have for those of us who are raising kids in 2017? Gamechangingdads came from a deep root created when he was a kid Dad was always working hard, so not a deep relationship Knew he wanted to have the relationship with his kids that he had with his mom Don't miss time with your kids! Would not do anything different, even though there have been tough financial years by trying to build businesses and do it from home. (easy to fall into comparison trap) – count your blessings; pray for others; transparency/honesty is a key to avoiding these traps You've spoken about how to make time for fun during the work day. What can you share with us about that? Big fan of doing the complete opposite of what everyone else is doing in order to be successful (a la George Costanza!) Everyone checking their phone at the park with kids? Jump in and play! Vegas partner at the park example; just making time to have fun and relax Get your blood flowing/exercise/stretching if you're stuck in an office all day Does podcast standing up and it gives him more energy and better tonality What does it mean to love the job you have? Follow your passion/dream, and if something isn't right, time to go Life goes way too fast Figure out how to serve others During an interview with ESPN you removed your teeth upon request; it was a funny moment, but there's a deeper lesson about taking immediate action isn't there? Link to the interview! Opportunities will come and you have to be willing to say yes and take action Five rapid fire questions Name one trait or characteristic you want to see in a colleague. Handshake is good enough What habit has been key to your success? Staying in the fight Most important app or productivity tool? Podcasts Most influential leader you've personally been around? Robert Kiyosaki – Rich Dad/Poor Dad One sentence of advice for the leaders in our audience? Enjoy the valleys; things will be tough, but learn and move on Where can people connect with you and learn about masterminds? gamechangingdads.com Facebook: Ray Matz Thank Yous/Acknowledgements: Antioch Live/Clear Day Media Group – music More here.
