Cystic Fibrosis and obesity? Until recently this has not been a topic of conversation for the CF community. The reason for obesity in the CF community is better health and longer lives, so the concern is now a reality. University of Michigan CF doctor, Carey Lumeng is researching the issue. As he says in this podcast, researchers have a lot to learn about the connection between better health in CF and obesity. We also talk about The Bonnell Foundation fellowship program. A few years ago we started the program to encourage doctors to work in the specialty field of cystic fibrosis. Dr. Lumeng is one of the doctors who oversees this program.Dr. Lumeng is the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor for the Cure and Prevention of Birth Defects and Professor in Pediatrics and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. Dr. Lumeng is the Division Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Associate Director of the Michigan MSTP Program. He grew up in Indiana and graduated from Princeton University in Molecular Biology. He received his PhD in Human Genetics and MD from the University of Michigan and completed residency training in Pediatrics in the Boston Combined Pediatrics Residency Program at Boston Children's Hospital and Boston Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Michigan and started as faculty in 2006. He runs a research lab focused on the health effects of obesity and the links between metabolism and lung health. The laboratory participates in both basic science and translational research projects in adult and pediatric obesity. He is funded by the NIH and the CF Foundation for new projects studying the changing causes of diabetes in people with CF.To contact the CF pediatric department (the Bonnell girls are pictured on this page): https://www.mottchildren.org/conditions-treatments/cystic-fibrosis-pediatric?pk_vid=6ff46bd2d38fe04c1739891353f5b28b Please like, subscribe, and comment on our podcasts! Please consider making a donation: https://thebonnellfoundation.org/donate/The Bonnell Foundation website:https://thebonnellfoundation.orgEmail us at: thebonnellfoundation@gmail.com Watch our podcasts on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@laurabonnell1136/featuredThanks to our sponsors:Vertex: https://www.vrtx.comViatris: https://www.viatris.com/en

Members of the Department of Government Efficiency have made their way into the National Science Foundation, as grants throughout the agency are being terminated. Three DOGE affiliates are currently listed as working in the Office of the Director at NSF, according to multiple sources within the agency: Luke Farritor, a former SpaceX intern and AI engineer who has shown up at other agencies DOGE has entered; Rachel Riley, a former McKinsey consultant who has also appeared at the Department of Health and Human Services; and Zachary Terrell. As part of the arrangement, Farritor has a “Budget, Finance, and Administration” clearance, which a source said allows him to view and modify the agency's funding opportunity system. Farritor and Terrell are listed in an agency directory as consultants. On April 18, NSF published a statement that it was terminating grants and awards that don't align with the administration's priorities, including those related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and misinformation and disinformation. Alexis Bonnell has stepped down from her positions at the Air Force Research Laboratory and transitioned to a new job at OpenAI, the company responsible for the development of ChatGPT. In 2023, Bonnell was tapped to serve as AFRL's first-ever chief information officer and director of the laboratory's Digital Capabilities Directorate, where she led the lab's information technology strategy and overall modernization efforts. According to a Tuesday post on LinkedIn, Bonnell is now working at OpenAI as a partnership manager, a position she took on in March. Send us a textMeagan from C&J Storage Solutions brings a refreshingly different perspective to the shed industry. Drawing from her background in mental health facilities, she's transformed how customers experience buying outdoor structures at her family's business in Bonnell, Florida. Her journey began unexpectedly—helping with social media and occasional weekend coverage for her parents' shed business. When COVID hit just after her son's birth, Meagan made the difficult choice not to return to healthcare, gradually taking on more responsibility until ultimately running the business while her parents moved into semi-retirement.What makes Meagan's approach unique is her customer-first philosophy. "I'm not a salesperson," she admits candidly, explaining how she focuses on building genuine connections instead of rushing to close deals. This authenticity resonates with customers who appreciate straight answers and personalized guidance through what can be a significant investment decision. As Meagan notes, sometimes the hardest part of the entire process is simply choosing paint colors! The conversation explores fascinating ways customers are repurposing sheds beyond basic storage—from home offices to art studios, fitness spaces to hair salons, and even microgreen growing operations. Meagan delights in helping customers design structures that transform their properties and enhance their lives, whether they need a compact garden shed or a fully finished workspace with electrical, insulation, and climate control.Perhaps most impressive is Meagan's commitment to service after the sale. Rather than leaving customers to navigate warranty issues alone, she serves as their ongoing advocate—handling repairs, answering questions, and ensuring satisfaction years after purchase. This dedication has created a loyal customer base that returns for additional structures and enthusiastically refers friends and family.Whether you're considering a shed, metal structure, or gazebo, this episode offers valuable insights into finding the right solution for your needs and working with dealers who truly care about your long-term satisfaction. Key Takeaways:Seeing nonprofits as corporations is important for changing mindsets and driving growth. Nonprofits need to embrace the business aspects of running an organization, like budgeting, fundraising, and strategic planning.Leveraging your existing skills and experiences, even if they seem unrelated, can be incredibly valuable when starting a nonprofit. Laura's background in journalism and storytelling was crucial for building the Bonnell Foundation.Authenticity and personal connection are powerful tools for fundraising and advocacy. Sharing your authentic story and being open to building relationships can lead to unexpected opportunities and support.Persistence and a willingness to learn are key when facing challenges. Laura had to overcome her discomfort with fundraising but embraced it as a necessary part of her work, which led to the foundation's growth. “There is a stereotype or a feeling that people working for a nonprofit shouldn't make any money. I think it needs to change because it's really important that there are foundations that are helping people in the community.” “Just ask. The worst someone can say is, “No, we can't do that much, but we'll do this much.'” “Keep your willingness to share open, because there are so many people I've connected with about being open, and we all help each other. Across the vast expanse of the Roman Empire, anxieties about childbirth tied individuals to one another, to the highest levels of imperial politics, even to the movements of the stars. Birthing Romans: Childbearing and Its Risks in Imperial Rome (Princeton UP, 2024) sheds critical light on the diverse ways pregnancy and childbirth were understood, experienced, and managed in ancient Rome during the first three centuries of the Common Era. In this beautifully written book, Anna Bonnell Freidin asks how inhabitants of the Roman Empire—especially women and girls—understood their bodies and constructed communities of care to mitigate and make sense of the risks of pregnancy and childbirth. Drawing on medical texts, legal documents, poetry, amulets, funerary art, and more, she shows how these communities were deeply human yet never just human. Freidin demonstrates how patients and caregivers took their place alongside divine and material agencies to guard against the risks inherent to childbearing. She vividly illustrates how these efforts and vital networks offer a new window onto Romans' anxieties about order, hierarchy, and the individual's place in the empire and cosmos. Unearthing a risky world that is both familiar and not our own, Birthing Romans reveals how mistakes, misfortunes, and interventions in childbearing were seen to have far-reaching consequences, reverberating across generations and altering the course of people's lives, their family histories, and even the fate of an empire. Today on Scope Conditions: college dorms shed light on where group culture comes from and how it molds us.At Harry Potter's alma mater, each new student is assigned to a House that aligns with their true character. The mystical Sorting Hat takes the courageous ones and sorts them into House Gryffindor, while the studious know-it-alls go to Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat may be fiction, but it's actually a lot like life. Much of the social world works this way: whether by assignment or by self-selection, people often end up in social environments that already fit with their pre-existing beliefs and traits. For social scientists, what's often called homophily – this tendency for like to attract like – can make it difficult to study the impact of social context itself. Do people tend to believe and act like those around them because they're influenced by their surroundings, or because they're drawn to places that already fit their pre-existing characteristics? Our guest today, Dr. Joan Ricart-Huguet, found a real-world social setting that helps him untangle these possibilities. At East Africa's oldest institution of higher education, Makerere University in Uganda, incoming students have for decades been allocated to their residence halls by lottery, rather than by personality type. For Joan, Makerere's randomly assigned dorms have been the perfect laboratory for studying how the cultural characteristics of a social organization arise, endure, and shape people's beliefs and habits over time. Joan is an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland, and we talk with him about a pair of recent articles he wrote on cultural emergence, persistence, and transmission. Joan tells us about the months of in-depth interviews and immersive fieldwork he conducted on the Makerere campus as well as the natural experiment afforded by random residential assignment that allowed him to test alternative theories of cultural differentiation, reproduction, and impact. For example, Joan tells us the stories of how distinct hall cultures emerged historically at Makerere – how Livingston Hall came to be known as the residence of respectful gentlemen while Lumumba Hall earned a reputation for rowdy activism. And we learn about the short- and long-term causal effects of these distinct hall cultures on the young adults assigned by chance to live within them.Works cited in this episode:Geertz, C. 1973.
