This is a special episode on the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award with a focus on resilience and perseverance in the face of initial setbacks. Nikki Davey shares how a supportive network encouraged her to reapply despite her doubts, emphasising the significance of community in personal and professional development.Nikki is the co-founder and CEO of Grown Not Flown, an innovative platform connecting local flower farmers with consumers, transforming the floral industry by promoting sustainability and supporting small-scale growers. In two short years, Nikki has not only expanded her platform but is also gearing up to host her first conference aimed at micro and small-scale flower producers. In this episode, we talk about her decision to reapply for the AgriFutures's Rural Women's Award after making it as a state finalist in 2022. Despite her doubts, Nikki shares how her supportive network, including key mentors, encouraged her to try again the following year. She opens up about the fears and self-judgment that accompanied her second application, but more importantly, she highlights the value of persistence. Her story is a powerful reminder that success is not always about the win—sometimes, it's about the growth and the community that propels you forward.Nikki now has the crown of 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award Victoria Winner, and most impressively, the overall National Winner. REFLECTIONS ON THIS EPISODEListening back to this episode, one of the standout lessons from Nikki's journey is that sometimes the first try doesn't lead to the outcome we hope for, but it can lay the foundation for something greater. Reapplying for the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award wasn't just about winning - it was about learning, growing and realising what more she had to offer. That persistence, the courage to try again, is something we can all relate to, whether in business or life.We referred to that first application as a ‘first draft.' That's something I think we can all take on board, because so much of life is like that first draft - imperfect, but necessary to build on. The key is to keep refining, keep growing, and not let fear stop us from submitting that ‘second draft.' It's through these iterations that we not only improve, but truly understand our own potential. Finally, as Nikki shared, it's not always about the title or the win - sometimes, the real victory comes from the journey itself. It's about redefining success, building a supportive network, and embracing the process, no matter the outcome. Every step, every 'first draft' brings us closer to becoming the person we're meant to be, and that's something worth celebrating.ABOUT OAK MAGAZINEThis episode was hosted by Kimberley Furness, founder + editor of OAK Magazine. Welcome to CRCS Outdoors! If you were ever wondering who we are and what we do, here is a brief report. CRCS stands for Cuba-Rushford Central School and the outdoor program is an extension of our Fisheries and Wildlife Technology classes. Our motto is making a difference “one young hunter (fisherman or student) at a time. “ In 2011-12, the schools environmental programs were featured in national magazines and television. CRCS Outdoors was featured every Saturday morning on the Pursuit Channel with 26 original shows produced right at CRCS and highlighted graduating film editor Cody Card. However, the programming would not have made it on air without support from our outstanding sponsors KA-BAR Knives, Western & Central New York Chapter of SCI, and the TRI State Chapter of SCI! As we all know the future of our hunting and fishing heritage rests in the hands of our nation’s youth. If we do not do our part and get them out there early, research says all may be lost. New York State has been slowly doing their part by lowering the hunting age and providing youth seasons. CRCS Outdoors has been making a conscious effort to do our part by providing area youth with opportunities that they may not get elsewhere. CRCS Outdoors hopes to expand nationally and bring the study of fisheries and wildlife/ hunting and fishing into the mainstream of the nation’s educational platform, and to promote student centered scientific research, studying natural resource conservation, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, land stewardship, biology/ management and conservation, Math/ Science and Technology, GIS, satellite images, remote sensing, radio telemetry, data collection and analysis. Through these opportunities students are also exposed to numerous career development opportunities as well as gaining ownership in what they do through choice in what they learn and gaining responsibility. CRCS Outdoors has traveled to South Africa to hunt, as well as anual trips to Alaska, New Zealand, Texas, and locally around NYS and PA. Students enrolled at Cuba-Rushford have the first option to participate on trips and opportunities, after that, these projects and trips are open to any student, anywhere! At 16 Alexia Hilbertidou looked around and saw that she was the only girl in her IT and physics class, then the next year the only young women in advanced physics. What was going on? How did women go from the forefront of coding to underrepresentation at a time when it is meant to be more accessible than ever? Well, to change the ratio you have to change the structure. So Alexia decided to take the message to young women while still choosing what subjects they would take, and so founded GirlBoss NZ, an organisation which encourages young women to embrace STEM, Entrepreneurship and higher leadership. In just 18 months, GirlBoss NZ is New Zealand’s second largest network of women with nearly 8000 members. At 18-years-old, just finished high-school, Alexia has spoken to nearly 20,000 young people, teachers and business professionals about gender equity, STEM, and the future of work. This passion for future-focussed education has seen her named a Top 30 Global Teen Leader, a Top 5 Young Leader by the Ministry of Youth Development, and the most influential New Zealand woman under the age of 25 at the 2016 Westpac Women of Influence Awards. A serial entrepreneur Alexia also was the National Winner of the Unitec Coding App Competition, at 16, receiving a $30,000 prize for KaiShare - an online food redistribution platform. …To talk changing the ratio, and her work, Alexia joins us now.
