Sanitation is a basic human right. Yet, while Singaporeans enjoy easy access to clean water every day, 1 in 3 people in the world does not have a clean, safe toilet. Dr. Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization, is a leader in highlighting this sanitation issue. Generally, humans use the toilet 6 to 8 times a day, however, over 2 billion people of the Earth's 8 billion population do not have access to safe or sufficient toilet facilities and openly defecate. Two million people die each year from diarrhea. Dr. Sim has collaborated with a wide range of professionals to shine the spotlight on this, at times, sensitive topic by working with Bill Gates, Rotary International and several United Nations agencies. The UN has declared November 19 as World Toilet Day. Goal number 6, of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, has six outcome targets that include: Safe and affordable drinking water; end open defecation and provide access to sanitation, and hygiene, improve water quality, wastewater treatment and
In the first episode of a new series, Andrew talks to Jack Sim, the Founder and Director of the World Toilet Organisation. “Today we say a billionaire is one who took a billion dollars from everyone else. We are incentivising selfishness. We need to define a billionaire as one who improved the life of a billion people.” Dr Andrew White is a leadership coach and Senior Fellow in Management Practice at Said Business School, where his work focuses on leadership that's fit for the 21st century. And in this podcast series Andrew is in conversation with exemplary leaders who are showcasing the new rules of leadership. Kicking off Series 3, Andrew talks to Jack Sim, who is a remarkable example of what can be achieved when you lead for impact and purpose. Jack grew up in a slum in Singapore and describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur” – he has successfully set up 16 businesses - but “retired' aged 40 to devote himself to changing the world. He looked for a wicked problem to fix, and turned his attention to sanitation – and in particular to toilets. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 1.7 billion people still do not have access to basic sanitation, such as private toilets or latrines. Of these, 494 million still defecate in the open. To improve toilet conditions worldwide, Jack set up the “WTO” - the World Toilet Organisation. He talks to Andrew about how he created a global movement with – in his words – no money no status, and only two other full-time members of staff. It is a true inspiration for anyone setting out to achieve what might look impossible. His motto is: “Live a useful life”. This episode was recorded in May 2022. Happy World Toilet Day! It is that day of the year when we all need to overcome our embarrassment and discuss what is normally a taboo topic. Hundreds of millions of people still have no access to a toilet, putting them at risk of disease, sexual assault and public humiliation. Tamasin Ford speaks to the inventor of World Toilet Day, Jack Sim, about how much has been achieved since he founded his World Toilet Organisation 20 years ago to promote discussion of this topic. We also hear from Catarina de Albuquerque, who served as the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to safe drinking water and sanitation, and made it one of the UN's sustainable development goals. Also, consultant Timeyin Uwejamomere talks about the challenge of introducing proper sanitation in the slums of his native Nigeria. Plus Chilufya Chileshe, policy director at the charity WaterAid, explains how the lack of a toilet leaves women and girls vulnerable to sexual harassment, and interferes with their education. Around 2 billion people worldwide still lack access to the basic tools of improved sanitation (toilets and latrines). One billion people still have to defecate in the open, and at least 10% of the world's population is thought to consume food irrigated by raw wastewater. An estimated 800,000 children, younger than 5 years of age, perish from diarrhea each year, including conditions related to cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. Mr. Jack Sim is the Founder of the World Toilet Organization (https://www.worldtoilet.org/), an organization established with the aim to break the taboo around toilets and this global sanitation crisis. Mr. Sim is also the founder of the Restroom Association of Singapore, the World Toilet Day initiative, and Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) Hub. In 2001, for "creating good will and bringing the subject into the open" and "mobilizing national support in providing on-the-ground expertise", Mr. Sim received the Schwab Foundation award for Social Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2004, he was awarded the Singapore Green Plan Award 2012 by Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) for his contribution to Environment. In 2006, he was invited to launch The German Toilet Organization in Berlin. He is also a founding member of American Restroom Association. In 2007, Mr. Sim became one of the key members to convene the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) comprised of over 130 organizations active in the sanitation sector. He is also an Ashoka Global Fellow and in 2008 was named Hero of the Environment by Time Magazine. Mr. Sim also sits in the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Councils (GAC) for Water Security and also the GAC for Social Entrepreneurship. Mr. Sim graduated with a Masters in Public Administration from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2013. He was shortlisted for the Sarphati Sanitation Award in November 2013. Mr. Sim also founded the BOP HUB and a series of social businesses and startups. He is now constructing a 65,000 sq ft World Trade Center for the Poor in Singapore to coordinate an effort to transform the 4 billion poor into a massively efficient marketplace to end global poverty.

An education that promotes unconditional love, passion over passing, intrinsic motivation over extrinsic motivation, and collaboration over competition). Jack Sim joins Mark Sutton to talk about the history of Boggo Road Goal in Brisbane.
Enjoy our next Haunted Historical Brisbane podcasts today!Historical FactsBoggo Road Gaol was Australia's most notorious prison, it closed in 1992 after 119 years of operation. The prison was divided into two main divisions, No. 1 Division built in 1883 housed male prisoners and No. 2 Division which was built in 1903 and became the State Prison for Women and operated 80 cells until 1921.Haunting FolkloreIf the research compiled by Jack Sim (2017; 2019) is to be believed, Boggo Road Gaol is haunted by, at the very least, thirteen distinct entities or phenomena. Let's start with the Cemetery Fog, a thick white curling fog that rolls over the top of the southern wall of No. 2 Division from the nearby South Brisbane Cemetery. It is said that if a Prisoner (but not a Guard) comes into contact with the fog it leads to an extended bout of Bronchitis and a protracted hospital stay. The 'A Wing' haunted cellblock that once housed the Gallows is reputedly still visited by those that died by the hangman's noose. This particular piece of lore and haunting was enabled by the fact that graves were found under the exercise yard at the rear of the cell block in the early 1980's; when new plumbing was being installed. It later came to light that the graves were inhabited by plague victims, and not those executed by the hangman. The last man hung at Boggo Road was reported serenaded to hell by the scream of a Banshee, a news reporter and many witnesses to the execution confirming a loud scream just prior to the hanging.Cell F2 in No. 2 Division, became infamous following the suicide of the Brisbane Arcade murderer. New occupants to the cell started to report sightings of Brown hanging himself from the rear of the inside cell door, his feet banging loudly against the metal whilst he gasped for air. Unexpectedly, animals as well as humans also passed away at Boggo Road Gaol. Tripod the Cat, a feral three-legged cat who was best friends with Dan Fritz. Dan was a well-known No. 2 Division hunger striker in the 1980's and is said to have received visits from Tripod on a number of occasions after she was buried in one of the gardens near its entrance, her limping figure distinguishable in any form. And it would seem that the ghosts of Boggo Road Gaol like to visit and assist the Prison Guards as there have been multiple sightings of a mysterious night patrol ghost Guard, this apparition is cheekily known as the Warder of No. 2 Division. Multiple guards on duty at night in the Towers have received ghostly phone calls, this playful spirit is a repeat offender, and the reason a number of new guards terminate their employment on Day Two.Lastly, the most haunted place inside Boggo Road Gaol is the creepy Back Track behind No. 2 Division. Black and white shadow people have been seen moving along this track by Guards on the back track and from the overlooking Towers. A Guard whistle has also been heard on numerous occasions drawing Guards on duty to its location. An officer has also been seen along this track carrying a rifle, dressed in a uniform reminiscent of the 1900's.For more information email our host at roweaton@bigpond.com, or leave us a message on our contact page via tomspod.com!Support the show (https://www.tomspod.com/store.html)

Serial entrepreneur Jack Sim has made it his life’s work to address this problem, starting the World Toilet Organization and helping instate World Toilet Day, raising awareness, and making change happen. Today, we hear from Jack about how he began this conversation and breaking down the taboo and silence on the subject. In today's episode, Jack explains his model of ‘mutual exploitation’ as a way of creating change, as well as how he created a movement built out of millions of heroes, rather than one central figure. Jack shares his thoughts on finding big problems to work on, his approach to change, and the fulfillment that is possible when we aim for the seemingly impossible. Our guest is a firm believer in the mission over the person, and argues that we should all be unimportant next to the cause we are fighting for. For Jack, the meaning of life is found in your usefulness and service to the rest of the planet and he is such a great example of helping people and inspiring change around him. Jack Sim is a Singaporean multi-millionaire tycoon with an unusual nickname: Mr Toilet. His obsession with toilets has had him mingling with presidents, A-list celebrities, he's even had a resolution passed at the UN. After growing up without a working toilet in Singapore he's now on a global mission to make sure others don't go through the same. Jack Sim is a very unique guy. A successful businessman turned NGO founder, he is determined to solve one of the biggest and overlooked issues of our times - toilets. More accurately, the lack of toilets and proper sanitation in developing nations. Recently, Jack was the star of the documentary "Mr. Toilet, The World's #2 Man", an insightful documentary about Jack, his journey, and the very real problem of sanitation and lack of toilets in developing countries. Jack has realized something very important about the media; with humor and sensationalism, he can garner media attention, and if he gets their attention - he gets the world's attention. He realized that talking about shit (in the literal sense of the word) is awkward, taboo, and uncomfortable for most people. So, he put a twist of humor into his message - in order to create an open dialogue on this extremely important issue. Not having a place “to go” isn't just an inconvenience; it's a problem that impacts over 2 billion people worldwide. In India alone, 200,000 children die each year from lack of safe sanitation. Jack and I discussed what we can do to help this very urgent matter - how do you re-educate people, what are some projects he and his organization are working on, and how as a collective we can better serve other humans more / ourselves a little less. Jack believes that helping others is the best way to live. I mean, it's hard to disagree with that. My Take - In the western world we take certain things for granted - healthcare, internet, electricity, running water etc... these basic things are not accessible to a large percentage of the population in developing nations. Before we complain about how hard our lives are, we should take a minute and be thankful for everything that we have, because something as simple as a toilet to you, could be a lifesaver for someone else. We were joined in studio by Lily Zepeda, director of "Mr Toilet: The World’s #2 Man," a documentary that tells the remarkable story of Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization
In the entertaining and informative documentary we meet Jack Sim, MR. TOILET: The World’s #2 Man. To strangers, Jack Sim might come across as an eccentric entrepreneur who is obsessed with toilets, but to those who know him he’s “Mr. Toilet,” a crusader for global sanitation. Born in the Singapore slums, Sim knows first-hand the agonies of not having a proper loo. Sim’s is dedicating his life to a crisis no one dares talk about. Not having a place “to go” isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a problem that impacts 2.4 billion people worldwide. In India alone, 200,000 children die each year from lack of safe sanitation, while women are regularly raped because they have to defecate in public spaces. He founded the World Toilet Organization and spent the last 13 years lobbying 193 countries to raise awareness for proper sanitation. He even successfully lobbied the United Nations to create World Toilet Day (November 19) – the first International day of celebration for the toilet. Now he is plunged into his biggest challenge yet when asked to secure 6 million toilets for the “Clean India” initiative. But with few resources and no help from the government, his epic project and reputation are in jeopardy. Jack’s once supportive staff begins to doubt him; and when his family bonds start to fray over his obsessive dedication, Mr. Toilet realizes there is a price to pay for being the world's #2 man. But as a "su-poo-hero”, he can't quit. Director, producer and writer Lily Zepeda joins us to talk about a man possessed with bringing sanitation to a world that may not be ready to embrace it and how his mission has impacted the people closest to him. For news, screenings and updates go to: mrtoiletfilm.com Toilet Facts: Almost 40% of the world’s population does not have access to safe sanitation Almost 1 million children die every year from diarrhea due to a lack of sanitation Over the past 200 years, toilets have added 20 years to the lifespan of humans i in 5 girls in India drop out of school when they start having periods due to the lack of private toilets Jack Sim was named one of the heroes of the environment for 2008 by TIME magazine Social Media: facebook.com/worldsnumber2man instagram.com/mrtoiletfilm instagram.com/lilyzepeda

Horror enthusiast Jack Sim has spent his life uncovering Brisbane’s haunted history and paranormal past. Jack had his first encounter with a ghost at the age of seven and admitted it was n occupational hazard as a tour guide with Brisbane Ghost Tours. And while it isn’t a ghost hunting organisation, Jack loves to share real history with his guests on every tour, which invariably involves a scary story.
Lily Zepeda and Jack Sim and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Mr. Toilet, constipation of thought, passion and purpose, normalizing the toilet globally and why we can’t solve problems we don’t talk about. Trailer Synopsis: What do you get when you cross an eccentric self-made man with a load of crap? Jack Sim. To a stranger, he’s a guy obsessed with toilets, but to those who know him, he’s “Mr. Toilet,” a crusader for global sanitation. Born in the Singapore slums, Jack Sim knows firsthand the agonies of not having a proper loo. Now he’s dedicating his life to a crisis no one dares talk about: Poo.Not having a place “to go” isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a problem that impacts 2.4 billion people worldwide. In India alone, 200,000 children die each year from lack of safe sanitation, while women are regularly raped because they have to defecate in public spaces. Jack’s kids describe him as a 12-year old trapped in a 60-year old’s body. He’s full of jokes and it can be hard to take him seriously. But, he uses humor as his weapon to fight an uphill battle against bathroom taboos. He founded the World Toilet Organization and spent the last 13 years lobbying 193 countries to raise awareness for proper sanitation. He even successfully lobbied the United Nations to create World Toilet Day – the first international day of celebration for the toilet.Mr. Toilet realizes there is a price to pay for being the world’s #2 man, but as a su-poo-hero he can’t quit. About the Guests: Lily Zepeda’s passion for exploring unconventional stories began with a career in journalism, interviewing subjects ranging from Grammy award-winning musicians to Olympians. She went from TV production to embarking on a 5-year journey to make her first feature film, Mr. Toilet: The World’s #2 Man. Curiosity is the air she breathes. Every story she comes across she approaches it with humor, vulnerability and connection—the three elements that are consistent throughout her work as a storyteller. She’s a Diversity Fellow and Accelerator Lab grantee from Chicken & Egg Picturesas well as a Hedgebrook Lab finalist. Jack Sim, founder of World Toilet Organization, has been a successful businessman since age 24. Having achieved financial success in his 40s, Jack felt the need to change his direction in life and give back to humanity – he wanted to live his life according to the motto “Live a useful life”. Jack soon left his business and embarked on a journey that saw him being the voice for those who cannot speak out and fighting for the dignity, rights and health for the vulnerable and poor worldwide. Jack discovered that toilets were often neglected and grew concerned that the topic was often shrouded in embarrassment and apathy; talking toilets was taboo! Jack felt this led to the neglect of restrooms island wide. In 1998, he established the Restroom Association of Singapore whose mission was to raise the standards of public toilets in Singapore and around the world. Jack founded the World Toilet Organization and four years later and in 2004, Jack was awarded the Singapore Green Plan Award 2012 by Singapore’s National Environment Agency for his contribution to Environment. In 2007, Jack became one of the key members to convene the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance comprised of over 130 organizations active in the sanitation sector. Jack is also an Ashoka Global Fellow and in 2008 was named Hero of the Environment by Time Magazine. Jack also sits in the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Councils for Water Security and also the GAC for Social Entrepreneurship. Image Copyright: Lily Zepeda. Used with permission. Mr. Toilet made its world premiere on April 27 2019 at North America's largest documentary festival, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Nearly 60% of people worldwide do not have access to safe sanitation facilities. Globally, almost a billion people continue to defecate in public which risks the spread of disease. Everyday, 1,000 children die from water and sanitation-related diarrheal diseases. These deaths are preventable. Please welcome to the show Director, Lily Zepeda and activist, Jack Sim.

If you have a good story, you can change the world. If your story makes people laugh, you have an even better chance at success. That's the message of Jack Sim, who decided after a thriving business career to take on the issue of global sanitation. Expanding the use of toilets would help stop diseases spread by people defecating in the open. More toilets would also lead to more women going to school, since a lack of toilets is often a reason that girls don't attend school. In 2001, Sim began building the World Toilet Organization to promote sanitation by expanding the use of toilets. The United Nations has since recognized an annual World Toilet Day and through its World Toilet Summit and other initiatives, Sim's organization continues to spread the word. Is it different running commercial businesses versus not for profit ones? Successful businessman and founder of the World Toilet Organisation Jack Sim tells us.
There are two backdrops for this story. Boggo Road Gaol and Samford. One, a notorious Gaol that housed some of the most disturbed and violent offenders in Australian history, where many of these offenders met their end at the gallows. The other, a small quiet farming town around a 30 minute drive from the Queensland capital of Brisbane. Two very different places but one tragic incident would forge a connection between the two that would still be remembered over a century. In this fast-paced hour, Shawn Shafner (The Puru) sits down with water and wastewater governance expert Raul Pacheco-Vega for a discussion that leapfrogs from the culture of flushing and bottled water, to the politics of poverty and what it means to pick trash for a living. Remember that kid who took their ball and went home when they didn’t get their way? Little Raul wanted to know how to keep the game going. Two Masters degrees, one PhD (with a double major in political science and human geography), and 15,848 Twitter followers later, Raul is one of the world’s foremost experts on sharing. He takes a holistic approach to studying how and why people, communities and governments do or don’t cooperate, and the tension caused by our competing desires to both shun the stranger and work together. You’ll also find out Raul’s number one secret for being productive, how he “obviously” drank sewer water, and why fear may be the worst advisor of all.
