NEW ZEALAND MUSICIAN DAVID PARSONS—in retrospect one of the greatest (though less well-known) world-ambient-electronic musicians—passed away in February 2025 at 80. His recorded legacy is so innovative, extensive, and important, that we are doing a two-part tribute. Last week we repeated our first Parsons retrospective from 2003—"LONG TONES." This week we focus on music from the later years of his innovative musical career, on a program called "DEEP TONES." Parsons was one of the earliest western musicians to embrace North Indian classical music, traveling to India in the late 1970s to study the sitar with female master KRISHNA CHAKRAVARTY. Fascinated by the sound of drones and “long tones” in Indian music, Parsons was one of the first to recognize the connection between Indian classical and electronic music, and pioneered popular fusions between the genres. In the late 1980s he went digital, incorporating samples of ethnic instruments, ambient sounds, and the chanting and ceremonial instruments of Tibetan Buddhist monks into his music. In the 1990s Parsons' music became deeper, more abstract, and purely electronic. He released a series of albums using only synthesizers and custom electronic sounds he produced from basic oscillators and filters. He said he was trying to create "atmospheric and surrealistic landscapes into which the listener can place their own thoughts and images." New Zealand musician DAVID PARSONS had a unique and fascinating musical career. In fact, you probably couldn't make it up if you tried. Back in the early 1960s, he was a jazz drummer, longing for a more melodic instrument. Years before The Beatles brought the sitar to pop music, Parsons heard a recital in New Zealand by RAVI SHANKAR. That was it. Inspired to make the sitar his new instrument, he spent three years trying to get one imported into NZ, then 8 years teaching himself to play it. At that point he was ready to get serious!…and he made several trips to India to study with one of the few female sitar masters, KRISHNA CHAKRAVARTY. In the late 1970s, fascinated by the sound of drones and long tones, Parsons discovered the connection between Indian music and synthesizers, and began creating electronic-Indian music fusions. In the late 1980s, he went digital, incorporating samples of ethnic instruments and ambient sounds from his travels in Asia, including the chanting and ceremonial instruments of Tibetan monks. His record company hired him to document ethnic music, a project that took him to exotic places like Iran, Armenia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali, and Malaysia. Like many of these cultures, his own music is rooted in India—with the melodic construction of the raga, the rhythmic cycles of the tala, and the extended, contemplative space of the alap. He created dozens of amazing albums, and doesn't read a note of music. David Parsons passed away in February 2025 at 80. In this episode, Jonny Fry (co-founder of TEAM BLOCKCHAIN) and David Parsons (founder of NiftyOne) discuss the challenges and solutions related to storing and managing digital assets, especially with the rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and stablecoins. Together they highlight how, in the past, banks managed physical assets and accounts, but with digital assets, individuals now bear the responsibility of managing their own assets, which requires reliable hardware and software.David addresses these challenges by talking about possible solutions for digital assets. This includes devices that are radiation-hardened and can withstand extreme conditions, resembling a large coin for physical security. They offer redundancy through twin devices stored in secure locations to prevent loss. The system also incorporates two-factor authentication and spending limits to prevent theft and unauthorized transactions. The technology behind Nifty One comes from the defense industry, ensuring high security. It uses NFC for easy transactions, making it practical for everyday use, like buying coffee or a car. The solution aims to provide a tangible, secure way to store and use digital assets, addressing the need for infrastructure as digital asset adoption grows. For more information, visit https://niftyone.co.uk/index.html. NiftyOne enables institutionally compliant liquidity for any Real World Assets (RWAs) on its digital asset wallets. It provides the necessary tools, systems, infrastructure and global liquidity for the creation, management, titles of ownership of real (tangible or intangible) ‘property'. NiftyOne has created  business processes and liquidity enabling the title of assets to be used in real time for the payment of goods and services. Its software technology and systems have been developed to support the creation of legally recognised and institutionally compliant titles of property in a process known as RWA ‘tokenization'.Participants:Jonny Fry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonnyfry/David Parsons: david@niftyone.co.ukDo you want to join one of the use cases? When David Parsons tells us that he remains concerned about the whereabouts of his 20-something-year-old self, we realize that our talk with Zuto's CFO is going to be different from most of those that we undertake with today's finance leaders. According to him, “Thirty-nine-year-old Dave is looking at mid-20s Dave and asking, ‘What are you thinking?!‘” Some further probing on our part reveals that “mid-20s Dave” was roaming the English countryside on weekends as part of a wedding band, as well as a member of other assembles—including a popular Michael Jackson tribute act.    “I just went down this rabbit hole where I was working weekends as a musician and doing studio work in the evenings,” explains Parsons, who adds that his weekend music tours would often book-end 70-hour workweeks in corporate finance. “I don't mind working the hours, if I get to do what I love doing,” continues Parsons, who began serving in a succession of FP&A roles once he was safely beyond his 20s. “I have not necessarily built my career by trying to fill niches and gaps on my c.v., which is, by the way, a good way of going about things—but it's just not for me,” remarks Parsons, who notes that he began to find his work increasingly satisfying as he moved into a number of commercial finance roles, which eventually led him to accept a position with UK-based automobile finance and loan company Zuto. “Basically, we begin by placing a customer with a lender and a preapproval, which means that we can tell them with a very high degree of accuracy whether the lender is going to accept them,” reports Parsons, who points out that Zuto deploys a sizable team of car-buying experts who can offer customers one-on-one service for vehicle history checks, free vehicle valuation checks, and the like. Parsons recalls that at the time that the CFO role opened up at Zuto roughly 5 years ago, he was overseeing FP&A. Nonetheless, although the company was evaluating other CFO candidates, he knew that in the end he was a good fit—and not necessarily because of his familiarity with the business. Says Parsons: “It really comes down to being a cultural fit, and for me, I found that this business is doing something that I believe in.” –Jack Sweeney

What happens when three old pals get together to talk about the 90s sketch comedy program Mr. Show with Bob and David? This podcast answers that very question! Welcome to the debut episode of Mr. Trap, a place where me (David Parsons) and my good friends Peter Sabatino and Geoff Johnson can trade ideas, memories, analysis, and even a few laffs about a show that touched our young hearts and forged our identities. In this opening conversation we get into Mr. Show's origins in the L.A. alt comedy scene, the transition to HBO, and the first few insane sketches announcing a new *extra ironic* set of Gen X comedy voices. When the definitive history of cross-cultural musical fusions and hybrids is written, there will be an honored place for the congruence of Indian classical and ambient-electronic music. Of all the experiments that were attempted after electronic instruments matured to the point of viability in the mid 20th century, this combination was one of the earliest and most successful. Synthesizers expanded the role of microtones and drones in Indian music, while raga and tala—the traditional melodic and rhythm systems of Indian classical music—brought a welcome sophistication to electronic music. It's an area we've explored since the earliest days of this program. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey where Indian classical meets ambient/trance, on a program called "INDO-TRONICA 4." Music is by DAVID HELPLING with NIDHI BHATMULEY and BENJY WERTHEIMER, DAVID PARSONS, WOUTER KELLERMAN & DAVID ARKENSTONE, DJ CHEB I SABBAH, MYCHAEL DANNA, BEN LEINBACH & JAI UTTAL, and AL GROMER KHAN. The saga of the Mexican Grey Wolf is about how politics interfere in the efforts of independent scientists to recover an endangered species. With my guest David Parsons, who formerly led the USFWS efforts to reintroduce the Mexican Grey Wolf to the American Southwest in 1990-to 99, we learn how difficult it is to reintroduce a species and save it from extinction when powerful vested interests who control legislators hijack the policy process down to even the scientific modeling results for how many wolves are needed to recover the species. The problem for these wolves is that all of the critical states for reintroduction reject accepting the number of wolves necessary for true recovery. But this lack of political tolerance for wolves in our government is not reflective of the general public and is a result of a subset of society that controls our decision-makers. As David explains, we have a huge political fight ahead to save this iconic animal that once roamed by the thousands.

Welcome to this weeks' edition of Digital Bytes where we have analysis on the following topics: Blockchain and digital assets are effectively helping to develop the insurance industry - whilst Blockchain technology is still in its infancy, there are already a number of promising use-cases that drive efficiency, security and cost reduction across the insurance industry. Though still in its early stages, Blockchain technology is making headway and will undoubtedly be a part of the industry's growth. Higher inflation and a call for greater decentralisation resulting from the Russian - Ukraine conflict? - prior to the conflict, inflation was already on the rise and the surge in many commodity prices will now only exacerbate what could prove to be a real problem for the global economy. Russia's actions highlight the fact that centralised control structures create systemic risks for financial markets for which Blockchain technology now offers a solution, thus helping to maintain confidence and ensure investors are treated even fairer. Social networks: the effect of digital assets and blockchain - social networks such as Facebook and Tencent are showing increasing interest in Blockchain technology. Digital assets (for example, NFTs) will define ownership on the metaverse and digital currencies are set to power this new digital economy. Traditional social networks are profit-driven companies, whilst decentralised social networks can be autonomously run organisations that improve and develop over time to benefit their users. How will some of today's social network giants address the challenges they face, and what role will blockchains (and the digital assets they can create) play? Financial Ghouls vs The Good: the ‘Battle Royale' to kill mortgages - how digital assets are changing the mortgage industry forever and saving capitalism for the many... not the few. The use of Blockchain technology is allowing us to alter the way that real estate is purchased, owned and even used as the backing for our own banking requirements, potentially unlocking and creating real liquidity in the global $326 trillion property market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jtylee/message

A Body's Language

Julie Kent became the Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in July 2016. She is the longest-serving ballerina in American Ballet Theatre's 79-year history. She began her dance training with Hortensia Fonseca at the Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet in Bethesda, MD and attended summer sessions at American Ballet Theatre II and the School of American Ballet before joining American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice in 1985. In that same year, Kent won first place in the regional finals of the National Society of Arts and Letters at the Kennedy Center. In 1986, she was the only American to win a medal at the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition, and she became a member of ABT's corps de ballet.Kent starred in the Herbert Ross film “Dancers” in 1987 opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov. She was appointed a Soloist with ABT in 1990 and a Principal Dancer in 1993, the year in which she became the first American to win the Erik Bruhn Prize in Toronto and was named one of People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People.” In April 2000, Kent achieved another triumph, becoming the first American to win the “Prix Benois de la Danse.” Later that year, Kent starred in the motion picture “Center Stage” directed by Nicholas Hytner. In 2012, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as well as a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Dance Magazine. Since 2014, she has been the Brand Ambassador for HANIA New York, a luxury line of hand-knit cashmere in NYC.During Kent's long performing career, she has acquired a vast repertoire dancing over 100 ballets, including all of the major classical, dramatic and neo-classical roles in works by Marius Petipa, George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan, John Cranko, Anthony Tudor, Michel Fokine, Agnes DeMille, Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon, Jiri Kylian, Ronald Hynd, Ben Stevenson and Christopher Wheeldon. As well, she has had roles created on her by John Neumeier, Lar Lubovitch, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Alexei Ratmansky, Nacho Duato, Stanton Welch, James Kudelka, Jorma Elo, David Parsons, Jessica Lang, and Natalie Weir. Her appearances as a guest include invitations from the Mariinsky Theatre, Teatro alla Scala, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Berlin Staatsballett, Australian Ballet, Bayerisches Staatsballett, Teatro Colon, Ballet de Santiago, and others. In August of 2015, after a 30-year performing career, Kent was named Artistic Director of ABT's Summer Intensive, a comprehensive summer dance program for 1,400 students at five campuses across the US.Since Kent arrived at The Washington Ballet, she has brought important classical and contemporary masterworks into the repertoire, including her and Victor Barbee's own critically acclaimed staging of The Sleeping Beauty, described by New York Times former chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay as “one of the world's finer Sleeping Beauties.” Kent's steadfast commitment to the development of artists, rising choreographers, and the creation of arts education initiatives that benefit the community of our Nation's Capital, showcase her dedication to creativity, expression, and to propelling ballet forward into the 21st century.Kent is married to The Washington Ballet's Associate Artistic Director Victor Barbee, and, as a mother of two children, she has helped redefine the image of the American Ballerina.

I've had a good run lately, posting a lot of mixes. But due to busy schedules and a bit of laziness, I've run out of fresh mixes ready to upload. Then comes Paul to the rescue! This mix is a breath of fresh air, going in a different direction than any of my recent mixes. Here's what Paul has to say about this excellent set: “This mix features oud, sitar and koto, moving from the Near/Middle East, across South Asia to the Far East. This is not a Folkways sampler, but focuses on the rich tapestries created when Eastern and Western musical styles and instruments are blended together, with both traditions being equal participants, rather than one used merely as “exotic” embellishments for the other. Such cross-cultural musical experiments go back to the mid-20th century's jazz /rock fusion groups (e.g., Oregon); early EM pioneers like Kitaro, Osamu Kitajima, Popul Vuh and David Parsons; and visionary new record labels like ECM. Here, I've highlighted more recent work, and while the options are much more plentiful now, the Low Lights leitmotif of gentle atmospheres has guided my selection. Even so, a couple of mid-tempo gems—essential to this kind of survey—have snuck into the mix." Thanks, Paul, for another great contribution to the Low Light Mixes canon.   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Dhafer Youssef - Shaanti 'Atihi Devo Bhava' Suite (Sounds of Mirrors 2018) 04:10    Rahim AlHaj - Letter 1 Eastern Love Sinan (Letters from Iraq: Oud and String Quintet 2017) 10:41    Sachal Studios Orchestra - Take Five (Interpretations of Jazz Standards & Bossa Nova 2010) 16:20    Prem Joshua - Night Rain (Sky Kisses Earth 2001) 22:45    Anoushka Shankar - Prayer in Passing (Rise 2005) 28:52    Hans Christian - First Light (Nanda Devi 2015) 35:20    Al Gromer Khan - I Got Vilayat Khan's Blessing (Sitar Secrets 2014) 39:14    Hiroshima - Kototsu-Han (Pbon 2005) 44:04    Luna - Tubular Bells (Luna 2013) 48:09    Gates of Morheim - Omagatoki (Omagatoki EP 2020) 53:15    Kitaro - Shining Spirit of Water (Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai, Vol 2 2005) 57:33    Rabih Abou Khalil - Bukra (Bukra 1989) 65:25    end
