How to Write a CV For Professionals to consistently get interviews for the jobs you really want demands a slightly different approach. Updating your CV and hoping this will get you to interview is not enough. When you write your CV, you are giving the reader an example of your work. The CV writing skills you demonstrate are another area you can compete on  - in addition to what you have done – which give the reader an indication of your likely work skills and approach. How you write your CV for professional roles gives the hiring manager personal experience with quite a few of your skills - which will trump anything you write down on your CV.  People going for professional roles have had to study hard and gain specific qualifications. They get paid well and professional jobs have great career development opportunities. These factors make them very competitive as a lot of people want these great jobs. On top of that, professionals have good written communication skills and can effectively articulate their skills to a hiring manager. These skills and the fact that they are hard-working and are good at learning, means developing strong CV Writing skills is even more important.  When thinking about How to write a cv for professionals there are 7 skills that you can and should demonstrate when you write a cv for professionals. Each of these skills are desirable, and being able to demonstrate them on you CV will put you ahead of those who just state them on their CV. I cover cv writing tips for experienced professionals, so you send positive hidden messages to the reader of your CV. Your CV is an example of your work, so the look, the professionalism, the structure of your CV plus your written communication skills, the persuasion used, the proof you offer etc all combine to provide a strong impression of you.  The assumption is that the skills used (or lack of them) in writing your CV will translate directly and be used while doing the job being applied for.   So when thinking how to how to write a good resume, you must think about the impression the example of your work will give. CV Writing for professionals covers a number of preparation steps you should take before you even start writing your CV. Omit these and you will almost guarantee yourself an average CV at best.  How to write a resume that will get you hired need to start with going through all your experience with a fine tooth comb and building lots of credible examples so you can demonstrate or prove the skills you claim you have.  Next when thinking about how to write a cv for experienced professionals is that you must choose a target role before writing your CV. You need to be specific. Marketing Manager is not enough. In what sort of company? With what development opportunities? B2C or B2B? Products or Services?  Get as specific as possible. Then you are in a good position to work out the problems that this role will have to overcome. Dr. Emily Steinhagen and I talked about tips for creating a fantastic CV and keeping it updated. There are 5 key strategies:1. Know what to put on your CV- and don't undervalue your experiences. Keep a master CV with everything on it, and tailor it down from there. Consider all experiences, because skills you develop may be relevant to a future job. Your CV is not just a document, it is a file that includes the supporting documents like papers and letters of recommendations. 2. Use your CV to further your career. You can use it to identify gaps you might have in your career, and the CV can also work as a way to communicate your skills. 3. Attention to detail! Declare a personal font, be consistent with your abbreviations. Your CV says something about you, and a sloppy CV is not the message you want to send. Add your name and date of the CV to every page. Send only pdfs of your CV so they cannot be modified. 4. Tailor it to your job. When applying for a job, see if your institution has a specific format. If not, the AAMC has an example here. 5. Maintain your CV. Create a system to maintain your CV using your calendar, email or scheduled alerts. Use tools like Publon.com to track your reviews of research papers. Welcome to this 5th episode in a small series I’ve called: “Professional Development - Job Hunting and Your CV”.In the previous episode, I talked about how to use all the work you have to do anyway for your annual performance review to fuel your own work on your career development. You can find that episode at www.barbarakandersen.com/15.In today’s episode, I want you to take a longer view of your career. You could say that we’re going to have a look into the crystal ball! Because I want to invite you to think about what your CV will look like in 10 years. Where will you be? And what do you want your CV to look like? What do you want it to reflect about your professional life?Are you a planner? Or do you prefer to wait and see what happens?I’ve noticed three different ways of approaching career planning:There is no plan - one day simply follows the other. You show up, do your job and hope for the best. Actually – there is no plan here.You have a clear plan and vision for your career. First this kind of job, then that kind of job. Always preparing for the next stepYou have dreams, but there’s no clear plan. Apart from your education, you probably haven’t taken major action to drive yourself toward a clearly defined goal. It feels more like you have navigated the flow and the possibilities that showed up. In my experience, the last group is the biggest one. And this was also my path for many years. I always felt lucky when I got a job. Then I worked hard to do that job as well as I could. I realised what I liked and didn’t like about it. But I was very much flowing with the opportunities that showed up. I can see now that I was more reactive than proactive in my career back then. Maybe you recognize this scenario?You got the job. You learned to do the job. Learned from the job. Settled in. Got comfortable with the job. Then, slowly you got a bit tired of the job or the content of the job - or the general setting you were in. Slowly you started to think about “what else?” What could be interesting? Where could I go?So, maybe you don’t really have a plan. But the truth is that if you dare ask yourself, there are things that you’d like to see happen for yourself. Maybe you’ve had that question in a job interview: “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” Was it easy to respond to? And have you acted on it?Many of us hope that opportunities will show up. However, experience has shown me that hope is not really a strategy. I don’t believe we can decide or predict exactly what will happen five or 10 years from now. But we can envision what we’d like our professional life to look like. And we can take action to move in that direction.Is there a 4th way?So, your CV is essentially a shorthand version of your career. Is that something that is happening to you? Or are you setting the direction? Are you proactive or reactive? If you want to become more proactive, that doesn’t mean that you have to – or should - plan everything in great detail. The difference between the promise and reality. Do not accuse anybody ut emphasize the importance of transparency. Lace your life with anecdotes and your interviewer will enjoy speaking to you. Make it a memorable experience for him.

How to get the most out of working with a recruiter Let’s chat about why we decided to do this episode? • Help people understand how we can assist them • How to help candidates stand out from the crowd • The processes we go through and what we look for • How to build relationships with a recruiter • A recruiter is there to support and guide you through your career • Create and build long-term connections and friendships • Share industry feedback to you • We provide Industry insights The role of a recruiter – Brian talks through the typical day in the life of a recruiter • It is a blend of proactive and reactive work. A day plan is essential • Similar to most jobs, commence your day with emails and admin tasks • After admin, set out your priorities, get that done in 20 minutes • Follow up on applications, get back to applicants. • Ensure applicants meet the requirements of the job • Not all applicants are appropriate for the roles • One consultant may receive 30 applications overnight • Right from an early stage, you need to stand out from the crowd • Your CV should be concise, outlining your skills and how they meet the requirements • Keep your CV relevant to the job • Apply for roles that suit and are right for you • Speak to a recruiter on a personal level via LinkedIn, eg. You’re looking for a career change. • What goes around comes around Typical recruiter’s day • Proactive – we do actively search upon candidates • Make your application as visible as possible, this includes ensuring your profile on Linkedin and Seek are very visible, making you more approachable • Get a new picture, update your profile with the latest information and experience • Recruitment consultants chat and consult with clients • We advise both parties – clients and candidates, vice versa • We are the brokers with both parties at heart • We find a happy solution for both, that makes us happy! Recommendations: • Be concise on your Cover Letter and CV • Build a strong relationship with your recruiter • Make sure you’re applying for the right role • Speak with the right recruitment consultant • Don’t spam your CV everywhere, tailor your CV for that specific role • General applications are fine too but you should be clear on what you want to do • If they haven’t heard back, follow up with a phone call after a few days • Do be careful and be patient with receiving feedback from the recruiter • Be proactive in your approach but don’t annoy people by going too far • LinkedIn messages are great for facial recognition and gives a personal aspect • Your LinkedIn gives the recruiter a quick snapshot of what you do and an understanding of your broader network Don’ts: • Don’t come to the door, don’t show up without an appointment • Make a call or connect on LinkedIn is preferable • Make sure your CV is right, no errors or spelling mistakes Question for the listeners • As a candidate, would you prefer to receive an email, call or text? Your CV is often the first interaction that recuriters have with candidates; to ensure you make a great first impression and stand out from the crowd. These are the top tips from this weeks podcast in what to include and avoid in your CV to give yourself the best chance of landing your dream job! When writing your CV: Keep it clean – think about the overall layout of your CV, keep it clear and concise Put experience in chronological order starting with your current or most recent job (include dates, company names and job titles) Less is more – avoid over-designing your CV by keeping flourishes to a minimum (include a separate portfolio if you wish to showcase design capabilities) Use bullet points rather than paragraphs where appropriate Make it snappy – any more than 3 pages is far too much, 1 or 2 is ideal but only write about what is relevant and appropriate for the role Try to write about your achievements as well as responsibilities and where possible include stats and figures to illustrate your experience Avoid clichés – commonly used words and phrases such as “enthusiastic” and “hard-working” become a pet-peeve to recruiters Do not lie – you will get found out Do not add to an old CV – starting fresh means you can cut the irrelevant or old information Make it personal – we do not advise including a photo of yourself, but if you wish to, please make sure it is a professional photo. Instead we suggest that you include a short summary or personal statement that is specific to the role you are applying for Always proof your CV before sending – ask your friends or family to read through your CV carefully checking for spelling mistakes or jargon, you can also ask recruiters for feedback, we’re always happy to help
