Job searching can be hard and tough on our mental health, that is why we will cover the following: What is job search depression? How can I protect my mental health when looking for jobs Why do I feel depressed while looking for a new job Here are some mistakes to avoid first before putting your mental health at risk while looking for jobs: Shooting your shot - when you are not applying to the correct jobs you are setting yourself for failure You can be the most qualified person but applying to the wrong department and not have the amount of years of experience of even worse not tailoring your resume for that job, you are most likely not going to get that job Remember that companies are hiring the best possible employee that can match their culture, requirements and will be there for the long term. At the end of the day they are spending thousands of dollars in their hiring process You know one of the biggest reasons why we become anxious, worried and depressed is because someone else might be dependent on us bringing in income, so try to be kind to yourself and not put so much pressure on yourself since others are already doing it on your behalf. ------ Connect with me! Dr. Winch speaks toward research and numerous helpful interventions in both the perceived feelings of rejection and the problem issues involved in waiting on decisions. Perhaps most notably, Dr. Winch tells a story about the first time he applied to graduate school, when he applied to 10 different programs, was denied by 9, and was "ghosted" (he literally never heard from them) by the 10th. Which makes his conversation with us not just incredibly helpful, but also relatable. As you work to secure a suitable job and then climb the career ladder, you may face a recruiter, a human resources professional, or a hiring manager who treats you differently than they should simply based on your age. Alex Rascanu reflects on six ways to sidestep age discrimination during your job search process: (1) keep your skills current; (2) showcase on your resume the last 10 to 15 years of work experience only; (3) be ready to answer indirect questions about your age during the interview in case they come up; (4) be flexible with the level of seniority you're expecting especially if you're being offered a role with an employer that you'd like to work for over a long period of time; (5) stay positive and be persistent in submitting job applications; and (6) reach out to your network for introductions to employers you're applying to work for. We live in a society that teaches that there's only two paths, win or lose. But the path to success isn't that simple, and one key ingredient of success is learning from failure. The truth is, there's no such thing as failure. As Nelson Mandela so famously quoted, “I either win, or I learn.” Even when things don't seem to be working out, we're learning valuable lessons. To succeed in business and in life, we need to understand that we won't always win in the traditional sense, and that's okay! We have to stop torturing ourselves for making mistakes.  In this episode, Founder and CEO of Extraordinary Advisors, Todd Palmer shares how to fail forward.  If you're not failing forward, you're not succeeding. -Todd Palmer   Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode  How to be intentional in everything we do Whether we're struggling with finding the right systems to implement in our businesses or facing something out of our control, like a pandemic, challenges are inevitable. It's how we handle the challenge that determines if we win. Why we must lean into uncomfortable conversations It's okay to feel stuck in a box, but we have to tell people. Communicate about potential problems and ask for help. Uncomfortable conversations are often more uncomfortable in our heads than they are in the real world, so lean into them.  How to embrace mistakes rather than fear them  When things don't go according to plan, we get an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and grow from them. There's no way to lose; we either win, or we learn.   Guest Bio Todd Palmer is the Founder, President and CEO of Extraordinary Advisors. As the world changes and you’re busy focusing on what new tools to use, business models, pivots you have to do in your business, there is another thing you might want to pay attention to: yourself. Today’s guest helps ask some key questions on how you can evolve and grow during these critical pivots.   Todd Palmer is a collaborative business advisor and CEO of Extraordinary Advisors. He went from being a struggling entrepreneur with $600,000 in debt to making it in the INC. 5000 (A total of six times!) as one of America’s fastest-growing companies. Todd is also the author of the popular book, The Job Search Process.   Todd learned at an early age that he could only depend on himself and that the path of entrepreneurship was the only real way for him to make it. But because of the way he was wired, his business got so paralyzed and so dependent on him and he was the main factor as to why his company had bottleneck and growth issues.   Todd was stuck. He didn’t know where to go from here and despite business doing relevant okay, he was broke. The only option at the time to get out of this and his intense imposter syndrome was to hire a coach. He knew there was no way he could fail or quit. He was backed into a corner.   When Todd came up with his list of core values for the company, everything changed. He began hiring for the DNA and not for the resume. His company began thriving because of it.   Interview Links: Extraordinaryadvisors.com Todd on LinkedIn Todd on Twitter   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? There are many reasons why people hesitate or procrastinate when they want to change careers. They don't know how or where to start. They "hope" that an opportunity will find them or that someone will recognize what they have to offer and they will get tapped.Rarely do those kinds of things happen, however. The Job Fairy is not likely going to come knocking at your door unless you are making some sort of effort on your own. And there is no Prince coming to "save" you like the Prince in the story of Cinderella. You must be willing to take some sort of action on your own, but it cannot be any sort of action. It needs to be intentional and it needs to be based on understanding what goes into a successful job search. There are many moving parts to every successful job search. You need a resume that speaks to the job you want not the job you have had. You need a compelling cover letter and a stellar LinkedIn profile. You need to understand the Applicant Tracking System and how to interview well. And the list goes on. THE DEFINITION OF JOB SEARCH INSANITY

DJD-002 THE DEFINITION OF JOB SEARCH INSANITY Hi. This is DREAM JOB DYNAMIC, where the subject of this weeks Career Boosting conversation may sound a little bit crazy. We’re calling this:  HOW MOST SEEKERS FUMBLE THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS. DREAM JOB DYNAMIC is dedicated to DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALLY PERFECT DREAM JOB in 7 SIMPLE STEPS!   Whether you’re  a BOOMER, a BEGINNER or a SOMEWHERE-IN-BETWEENER…,  Whether you’re plan is to:    RAMP UP YOUR ROUTINE EASE OFF THE GAS A BIT  OR TO TAKE  A SIDE ROAD IN A TOTALLY NEW DIRECTION…,  With a DREAM JOB DISCOVERY as your target, you’ll learn to  DEFINE IT! LOCATE IT! And LAND IT!  So, welcome in or welcome back, as the case may be, to our weekly conversation and a community dedicated to your personally perfect DREAM JOB DISCOVERY. The goal here is to walk through a few simple steps to eliminate the most common JOB SEARCH CHALLENGES and MISTAKES that plague most of your fellow Seekers. We call them, fondly, YOUR FUTURE FORMER COMPETITION.    This week’s topic was inspired by a quote from Albert Einstein that we know as the Definition of Insanity.  Experts tell us that regardless of their experience or education, most Seekers are certain to fumble their JOB SEARCH PROCESS, simply by forgetting to remember that:   “ Doing the same thing over and over  and expecting different results…  is a little bit goofy!” The message I would share with you is very simple. If you are not happy and successful in your current position, then you would be wise to remember how you found that job in the first place.  If your first instinct is to quickly brush off, tweak and re-boot your old resume, I urge you to consider a slightly different plan. No, let me be more clear. If you think that you can turn your career story into a bestseller by tacking on a new chapter and pushing print, then STOP right where you are and step away from the Job Board.  OK, that may be just a little bit melodramatic. I’ll admit, if your story has been an adventure filled with success and milestone moments, then my advice would be a little different. If in fact, your past search got amazing results, then by all means ramp it up and repeat the same search routine again. If it worked in the past, DO THAT AGAIN, with gusto. If it’s not broken , don’t fix it.  On the other hand, I do realize that if it had worked in the past, you and I probably wouldn’t be having this conversation. So, just on the off chance that your last job was somewhere between disappointing and disastrous, “WE NEED TO HAVE A LITTLE TALK!” In either case, it’s actually a good idea to consider your previous experience, before you engage the autopilot to simply clean up your old resume, rinse and repeat the same old process. In most cases it can be proven  that YOUR PROCESS WAS & WILL BE YOUR PROBLEM.  Let me just remind you of the title of our website, podcast, blog and FaceBook Group. It’s 7 SIMPLE STEPS to DREAM JOB DISCOVERY. So, before you get discouraged, I promise that we’ll get to and through those steps in short order. You will discover opportunities that have been hidden in plain sight and you will find yourself with options and opportunities that your Fellow Seekers will simply overlook. So stick with me.   I can confirm that most Career Coaches would agree that rushing out the door with fingers crossed and hoping to find something better this time around, is not a great plan. Plain and simple, it may be time to change your routine, to get better results.   While most future Seekers will continue launch into cyberspace without a plan or a target, they will all likely find a job. The problem remains that without a better plan, the next job will be simply that and not much more:   A JOB DOING SOMETHING SOME WHERE FOR SOME ONE. Odds are that f you were to catch up to them down the road, to ask how they’d rate their new opportunity, I think we’d find that nothing much had changed. We’d find them in just another J.O.B., saying “It’s OK. It pays the rent. It’s just a job. That’s about it. It is what it is.” With all due respect, OUCH!  Our goal, I can promise, is to do better than that, by preparing an individualized process that builds on your own passions and potential. The objective is to find the right DREAM JOB OPPORTUNITIES, within your area of interest. . You’ll discover organizations hidden in plain sight, where more than one DREAM JOB BOSS CANDIDATE will have openings that fit you perfectly.  POLISHING THE PROCESS We hear it said that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Assuming that to be true, it’s a little surprising that  most Job Seekers don’t give a little more thought to one of the most important activities in their work life, the search process. In order to find a DREAM JOB, you need to have a clearly defined target.  The simple solution to avoid JOB SEARCH INSANITY, is to plan your search, then search following the plan. In order to know where you’re going, we’re told that we need to have a M.A.P., which is a clever abbreviation for a MASSIVE ACTION PLAN.  Personally, I think anticipating a need to take MASSIVE ACTION is a little off putting and will cause most of your fellow seekers to take the low road to gather the low hanging fruit. Before you jump on that particular band wagon, let me share a different perspective. REPLACING MASSIVE WITH MANAGEABLE The actions needed in a successful search are neither difficult, challenging and certainly don’t require MASSIVE ACTION.  We’ve broken down the process in to our own version, that I’d prefer to call your MANAGEABLE ACTION PLAN. It’s still a M.A.P., but it will lead you up to the Boss’ office instead of sliding down and through the rabbit hole that your friends and fellow Seekers will encounter.  Predictably, your fellow Seekers will blast out of the starting blocks, going full speed ahead in no specific direction. By taking just a bit more time to fuel up with the right information and to create an actual flight plan, you can highlight a M.A.P. with prearranged stops at specific points of interest along the way.  You can learn to identify, in advance, a select group of your targeted employers with opportunities. Your search will be more effective by being intentional, instead of accidental.  IT GETS BETTER When we pay attention to our life’s lessons, as Maya Angelou would always say, “We can do better when we know better”. There are very few things that we learn to master in life that don’t take, at least, a little practice.  As you may have experienced, even walking and chewing gum at the same time, can require at least a little bit of trial and error. Even our ability to speak, read and write improves over time. Riding a bike, making friends and mastering a craft, for example, all begin awkwardly, but we improve by trying, observing the results and making adjustments.  The same lesson applies to Dream Job Discovery, It will take some practice and you could certainly figure it out, over time, if you continued to learn by failing forward. The problem is that when we are in Job Search Mode, there is obviously a sense of urgency, possibly even panic, that short circuits our ability to think calmly and search systematically. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A GENIUS… Let’s consider how Albert’s observation can apply:  If, for example, your goal was to get from point A to point B and every day you found a locked door blocking your way, you’d have a number of choices:  You could give up and go home.  You could make yourself comfortable where you are and wait for someone to open the door.  ….or here’s a thought, you could  Knock on the door,  Look for a key Call someone on the inside.  …and if all else fails, you could actually look for another door or climb through the window. What a genius concept! In this scenario, there is an obstacle, the door and a logical path to success. What if that locked door was keeping you from an important life changing meeting on the inside. Let’s say on the other side of that imaginary door sat your personally selected Dream Job Boss holding a job opening with your name on it.  If you found yourself at the doorway to a Dream Job, would you keep testing the lock or would you run around to the window? The purpose of our conversation is to offer a variety of simple solutions to fast track your mastery of the Job Search Process by taking a more proactive approach.  This time around, I hope you’ll consider an observation by Henry Ford that points out a common problem and even suggests a solution. He noted:  “IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE,  YOU’LL CONTINUE TO GET WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS GOTTEN!”  NOW, if have been blessed with success, because of the actions you have taken, then GOOD ON YA and keep doing that. On the other hand and here’s the moral to this particular story:   IF WHAT YOU’RE DOIN’ ISN’T WORKIN’, THEN HERE’S AN IDEA:  STOP IT AND TRY SOMETHING ELSE!  IF YOU CAN’T FIGURE IT OUT BY YOURSELF, THEN FIND SOMEONE WHO IS SUCCESSFUL AT YOUR ASPIRATION AND DUPLICATE THEIR EFFORTS.  FINALLY, IF DECODING THE PATH TO YOUR PASSION IS UNCLEAR OR ALLUSIVE, THEN CONSIDER BEING DIRECT AND ASKING A SUCCESSFUL SEEKER FOR SOME DIRECTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS. IF THOSE FIRST THREE POINTS DON’T ALTER YOU ASCENSION, THEN STICK WITH ME. THIS GETS BETTER ON STEROIDS.    DON’T DUPLICATE THE DISAPPOINTMENTS OF OTHERS By  missing the message or failing to consider it’s value, most Job Seekers will approach a Search by automatically updating an old resume and launching into to full blast search mode at the first possible opportunity, without  preparation, planning or a prayer.  After analyzing and personally practicing the Job Search Process for over 40 years and while coaching many Seekers through to successful Dream Job Discovery, here are a few things I can tell you for certain:  FIRST: If you haven’t updated and optimized your job search process recently, simply UPDATING YOUR OLD RESUME is a BAD IDEA.  SECOND: More specifically, if you have never had a Dream Job, then chances are duplicating your previous job search process is likely to land you in (guess what):  Another job, just like the other job that you LOST, LEFT or can’t wait to LEAVE behind. THIRD: Experts tell us that vast majority of all working humans (80% or more):  Have never had a Dream Job Don’t know how to find one and never really expect to get one.  So, before you ask anyone for JOB SEARCHING ADVICE, your first question should be: “Do you now or have you ever had a DREAM JOB?” I’m just sayin’…  FOURTH: In order to alert you to a critical conversation in an upcoming post, podcast and FaceBook conversation, let’s consider the most commonly fumbled resource that overlooks majority of all Job Opportunities, the overrated, CYBER JOB BOARD. Most Seekers expect too, much from them, while at the same time failing to use them to their maximum potential. That’s the worst of both worlds. Hopefully, you’ll join me as the DREAM JOB DYNAMIC discussion continues, as we break down and ramp up your job search master plan, one step at a time. However, just in case we don’t happen to meet again, I want you to consider this cautionary note concerning Job Boards:  First, you would be well advised to consider two variations of the 80/20 Rule.  THERE’S A LOT (and I mean really a lot) of competition on any Job Board, regardless of the Job Category. You need to be aware of the fact, as estimated by industry experts, that fully 80% of ALL JOB SEEKERS count Job Boards as their only resource for finding a job.  So before you jump in, be prepared. It’s very crowded in there. If you want to know where to find the highest concentration of competition, pick any Job Board.  OK, I promise, there’s a happy ending, but I do hope you’ll consider this related 80/20 revelation concerning Job Boards:  At any given time, in any Job Category, fully 80% of all available jobs are NEVER POSTED to a Job Board, NEVER ADVERTISED and NEVER PROMOTED PUBLICLY. Bummer!  Actually, you can use those estimates to your advantage, when targeting your personally perfect Dream Job connections. We’ll break it down in an upcoming session.  A word of warning, just take a quick glance at your fellow Seekers. In addition to relying on yesterday’s resume to sell themselves,  most of your fellow Seekers will put all of the hopes in being selected as the perfect one of a million applicants in a JOB BOARD LOTTERY. Since, as we mentioned, the Job Board is used by the vast majority of all applicants, we’ll discuss both the problems and believe it or not, some very real positive points  in using a Job Board Strategy. I promise, it’s not what you think. At first glance the path to Dream Job Discovery may seem somewhere between unlikely and impossible, but we’re here to introduce a proactive process that will effectively improve both your vision and your visibility in the Job Market. In addition to the proper preparation we will be presenting, remember that in any challenging situation, having a positive attitude can spell the difference between success and much less.  Certainly, since our goal is to line up multiple interview opportunities with your personally selected Dream Job Boss Candidates, your attitude will absolutely affect your altitude. To that end, you can be certain that proper preparation will give you the confidence to face the future with a CAN DO ATTITUDE. Your positive energy  will absolutely impress employers and confuse the heck out of your competition.   To paraphrase of a message, by Henry Ford this is one you can take to the bank. It goes like this:  So, let’s dive in a little deeper. An important suggestion to keep in mind is that in the midst of a Job Search, as in life, there is always room for improvement and that learning from our own mistakes is essential. Taking that to the next level, an even better plan is to be observant, in order to learn from the mistakes of others. What a concept, all of the gain, with none of the pain.  What I’m suggesting here is:   GENERALLY SPEAKING, BASED ON YOUR CURRENT CONDITION,  IF YOUR LAST SEARCH LANDED YOU IN A SUCKEE SITUATION,  IT‘S NOT NECESSARILY A REFLECTION OF YOUR FUTURE POTENTIAL.   IT’ MAY SIMPLY MEAN THAT PREVIOUSLY, YOU CONDUCTED A SUCKEE SEARCH AND WE CAN FIX THAT. DID I MENTION THE 7 SIMPLE STEPS. STICK WITH ME.   The good news is that moving from SUCKEE to SUCCESSFUL is not rocket science and as I will continue to remind you, it takes very little time and doesn’t cost a dime to ramp up your routine. Dream Job Discovery is a process that can be easily mastered, if you will first accept the fact that improvement is important, optional and achievable.  One positive point that applies to your condition and not to your FUTURE FORMER COMPETITION is that you and I are having this conversation. You can be certain that most of your fellow Seekers will have already blasted off into Job Search Panic Mode, without a thought or a prayer and a total lack of preparation for finding a Dream Job.   IT GETS BETTER… As far as I’m concerned, you’ve already taken a giant step in a positive direction by reading this far. From this point and beyond, the only reason we will refer to your former competition is to serve as a reminder of WHAT NOT TO DO. Trust me, you can learn from their mistakes, without following them down a path to nowhere in particular.  TO DO’S AND ABSOLUTELY DON’TS In addition to relying on yesterday’s resume to sell themselves,  most of your fellow Seekers will put all of the hopes in being selected as the perfect one of a million applicants in a JOB BOARD LOTTERY. Since, as we mentioned, the Job Board is used by the vast majority of all applicants, we’ll discuss both the problems and believe it or not, some very real positive points  in using a Job Board Strategy. I promise, it’s not what you think. Your FUTURE FORMER COMPETITION ARE LIKELY TO LAND SOME JOB, doing SOMETHING, in SOME UNKNOWN ORGANIZATION, to meet the EXPECTATIONS of SOME UNKNOWN BOSS. Honestly, that’s a whole lota mystery to hang all of their hopes and dreams on.  ON YOUR MARK! GET SET! STOP! Now, in preparation for your search, before you hit the GO BUTTON, I hope you’ll stop by our home base at www.DreamJobDynamic.com where you’ll find a growing FaceBook community, in which we can discuss common questions and action plans.  Also, on the site you’ll find THE DREAM JOB DYNAMIC BLOG, a PODCAST by the same name and an ever growing collection of FREE DREAM JOB DISCOVERY RESOURCES.  One of the resources I’d like to share is called our QUICK-START GUIDE to DREAM JOB DISCOVERY in 7 SIMPLE STEPS. This FREE FAST TRACK TOOL may give you all of the direction you need to set your search on a productive course. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to nowhere, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search.  Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.  This came in especially handy as I was in transition again in 2017.  Basically, I just used the tips that I have shared with others and was out of work a total of ZERO days. Yes, I got a job offer the day after my last day at my previous job. Let me show you how I did it so you too can have a quicker landing than you would have had without my tips. Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people's experiences. Plus, I told myself that once I figured this out I would share it with others so that they too could navigate the world of unemployment. In these chapters, I show you how I did it so that you will have the confidence to make it through the process. Welcome back to Tech Forward, listeners! Today, for the final episode of our job seekers series, I spoke with Shondra McCray. A web developer and user experience strategist, Shondra recently moved from Texas to the San Francisco Bay Area to explore opportunities in tech. During our conversation, Shondra shares her journey navigating the job search process in Silicon Valley, as well as her advice for others looking to get their foot in the door in tech. After her UX role at Parker University and other jobs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, relocating to the Bay Area in June of this year was a massive shift for Shondra in more ways than one. In addition to the much higher housing costs, Silicon Valley’s professional culture was a stark departure from Texas. Some companies used language in their job descriptions that signaled their desire to hire a man for the role. Others made it clear that they would only consider candidates with an Ivy League education. For anyone looking to enter the tech sector, Shondra stresses the importance of job seekers being honest about their skills — and how those skills might translate differently from one region to another. “I realized when I moved that I could call myself a rockstar developer back in Texas — but not out here. But I’m open to working on skills that will add value to a company.” Shondra also advises job seekers to thoroughly research prospective employers. “Especially with startups here in Silicon Valley, I look at whether they started with a seed round or not, and what round they’re in currently.” When it comes to the interview, Shondra encourages interviewees to make the process a dialogue where both employer and potential employee take turns asking and answering questions. “I like to write down deliverables and things I can contribute, as well as things that I’d want from the company, such as time off and health insurance. I need to know how these companies invest in their employees.” For companies looking to attract talent such as herself, Shondra again stresses the importance of a respectful and engaged dialogue. “Treat your candidates as if their time is priceless, because it is. Show the people you interview that you care about their growth, not just their contributions.” Since moving to the Bay Area, her own interview experiences have been both positive and negative. The best experiences weren’t necessarily ones that ended in a job offer, but those where she was made to feel like a member of the team.    Shondra, thank you so much for coming on the show and giving our listeners this glimpse into the current interview and hiring process. I wish you the best of luck as you continue your career journey. Thank you also to all of you out there listening, subscribing, and sharing the show. See you next week! Rules are meant to be broken!  I know it's not something you heard from your Mom but I know that's something you've heard along the way (I know I have).  For me, as an Unconventional Leader, life is about looking at things (and doing things) against the norm and I know that's how you look at things as well. Fritz Leopold found his way into the recruiting world quite by accident. Since the age of 3, Fritz dreamed of being an architect. Through the process of chasing that dream, he realized it wasn’t as fulfilling as he’d hoped it would be. As new opportunities crossed his path, Fritz realized he needed to pursue his passion for helping others. Along the way, he found himself being invited to be a full time recruiter - and so, he found his true path. Today, Fritz works as a business technology recruiter for McKinsey & Company, where he is able to follow his purpose of helping others. TWEET: Don’t run away from your dreams and always be true to yourself ~ Fritz Leopold Getting to the heart of your dreams. Although dream chasing required Fritz to start over in an entirely new career, he wouldn’t change a thing. He discusses with Aimee J. the process of finding his purpose in the world of recruiting and what it’s like to make such a huge transition. Fritz shares the realities of making such a shift, including facing the financial challenges that might come with it. He also discusses - with great honesty - why it’s essential to follow your true path, even with the sacrifices it might require. For Fritz, once he found that path, he knew it was right. He explains why that makes the initial sacrifices very worthwhile. Regret has no place here. As Fritz delves a bit deeper into the transition process and some of the obstacles he faced, Aimee asks if he has any regrets. Without skipping a beat, Fritz makes it clear that he doesn’t believe in regret. He shares why all experiences are valuable - especially the mistakes. And how we must embrace them as part of learning and growing. He discusses in more detail why you have to be realistic about the fact that shifting gears when it comes to your career means you are starting at the bottom. It’s a humbling experience and one that you must be realistic about before you take the plunge. TWEET: Getting to the heart of your #dreams and chasing them no matter what, on this episode The importance of learning to take feedback. Another key element to making a career change is learning to take feedback. When you switch careers like Fritz did, there will inevitably be a learning curve. That’s where feedback comes in. Fritz discusses why you must embrace feedback because it is the key to your growth as a person and in your career. Fritz also offers a few tips to help you through the transition process, including some steps to take before you even consider making a change. He also discusses the role of headhunters and how to make sure you work with people who truly have your best interests at heart. Being a good interviewee - practice makes perfect. As they close out their chat, Aimee and Fritz discuss the interview process, along with some negotiating tips. When it comes to the interview, says Fritz, the biggest hiccup can be talking about the areas in which you excel. Fritz gives his recommendations on how you can overcome this obstacle (hint: it involves a lot of practice). Fritz also offers his number one piece of advice for fellow dream chasers: Do not be afraid to chase your dreams. Your dreams are what you aspire to be. If you downplay them, you’re never going to be your true self. Don’t run away from your dreams and always be true to yourself. Here's Linda Williams Favero, program director at the University of Oregon Alumni Career Services Office reading her contribution, It's All About You, Knowing Yourself is the First Step in the Job Search Process. Linda Williams Favero:  I encourage you to answer the following questions to begin your own self assessment process. First, what do you do best? What are your skills, knowledge and competencies acquired through education and experience of all kids, whether it's employment, volunteer work, life experience and so on? They represent your principle assets in the job market. So, an important part of communicating your value is correctly identifying and labeling these skills. Also, your personal characteristics or adaptive skills are inborn or developed early in life. They can include abilities, talents or predisposition to certain career directions. Third, your accomplishments or the things you've done that you are most proud of. Next, what do you like to do? Your interest should help shape your professional objective which should be something you are interested in as well as something you are good at. In addition, your values or your core beliefs about what is the most important in life that usually evolves slowly and may change across your life. Next, consider what are your priorities in life. These are your personal preferences or things that might relate to location, schedules and income. Your professional objective should be consistent with your career vision and lifestyle needs. Also, your motivation. Consists of the drivers or needs that propel you along in your chosen career direction such as a sense of accomplishment, the satisfaction of being part of a team or the desire to travel. Next, where do you fit? Although you may appreciate a good wage, you should also consider many other factors especially when you're working in Portland. First, culture. Do you want a clear line of command or something less hierarchical? Wellness. Does the company offer yoga, encourage noon time runs, discount at gym memberships? Global opportunities. Do you like to travel to the far reaches of the planet or hang close to home? Workspace. Have you dreamed of the corner office or prefer an open environment with beanbag chairs? Flexibility. Do you need an office to stay focused or enjoy the opportunity to work from home? Professional development. Do you want an MBA or the chance to travel to conferences in sunny spots? It does get awfully grey here sometimes. Explore your strengths and weaknesses in other ways. Sometimes more tangential approach can yield productive insights and results. What's most important is to really that you are important in this decision making. It's important for you to consider what you do really well, what you enjoy doing, what are your priorities and what is the most important fit when you think about next job, your next career, your next move.
