Why Overtime's Elite basketball league is using social audience interest to find a live TV rights buyer

One year ago, Overtime announced it was creating its own basketball league made up of 16- to 18-year- old players — a demographic representative of the sports' publishers' audience. Called the Overtime Elite League (or OTE), the social media-first sports publisher used some of the $80 million raised last year in its series C to build a basketball arena, boarding school and dorm facility in Atlanta, and recruit 27 high school-aged athletes, all of whom are paid six-figure salaries, to get the league off the ground. As the three-team league wraps its first official season, Overtime's co-founder and president Zack Weiner came on the Digiday Podcast to talk about the advertiser-based business model his team has created around the Elite League. The ultimate goal for making the league profitable, however, is to sell the live game rights to a network or streaming platform, which is the money maker for professional leagues, like the NFL, NBA and MLB. Currently, OTE's games are not broadcast to Overtime's audience, but Weiner said the off-the-court video series and game highlight reels are working to introduce viewers to these players and generate excitement around the league, which will hopefully get a buyer to purchase the live rights for a sizable sum.

Today on BRING IT IN, we have TrueHoop Coachspeak. (This is where we let David geek out, using basketball terms that might alienate my mom. Why is that his approach? It’s unusual. Todd updates on the current state of Pascal Siakam, who had a COVID-funky last season but is on track, he says, to do mind-blowing things this season. What’s his ceiling? “MVP” says Todd, in a way that comes off remarkably unsalesy. There’s something special about Spurs rookie Josh Primo. Why does Todd call him a unicorn?Thomas Bryant won’t be ready to start the season, but isn’t far away and looks tremendous. We don't quite get to the bottom of it, but we do cover a wide array of topics, from a political sex tape leaked on OnlyFans to PS3 leaks and ransomware in US schools.   We start with the electoral scene in New York state, where a user on Onlyfans and Twitter leaked a BDSM video of politician Zack Weiner and a partner. Both platforms took down the video and banned the user, but the reply from Weiner is what caught our attention as a standup response to a truly personal doxing.   From there, we have to mention Ahmed's complete quiz game dominance. Sadly, I am not able to overtake David's massive lead, and we move on to a story of PS3 hacking for online gaming.   In the next segment, I sit down with Kurt Baumgartner to discuss the latest on school ransomware in the United States, the government reclaiming funds from ransomware crooks, and more. We continue with news of a potentially new scraping of data from 700 million LinkedIn users before closing out with a new government joining Have I Been Pwned.       If you liked what you heard, please consider subscribing and sharing with your friends.

Pledge is a recent indie horror gem from director/writer team Daniel Robbins and Zack Weiner. It follows three hapless college kids as they attempt to pledge for a highly exclusive fraternity and are subsequently subjected to a sadistic gauntlet of unspeakably horrific hazing rituals. Pledge mixes humor and horror in a well-balanced and thoroughly engaging narrative with main characters you genuinely care about. At the same time, Pledge manages to effortlessly delve into themes of elitism and the culture of bullying in a way that's relevant without being heavy-handed. Prior to Pledge, Zack and Daniel made Uncaged, a teen werewolf horror thriller from 2016. Zack and Daniel were friends in high school and went on to make low-budget horror movies together, right here in my hometown of New York. They've been enjoying a great amount of success lately, as Pledge was recently acquired at Fantasia Fest by IFC Midnight and is on its way to Hulu. In addition to being a downright great time of a movie, Pledge is a prime example of an intelligently produced, lean and mean indie horror masterpiece that looks and feels way more expensive than it actually is. It also introduces a particularly strong horror mythology that is ripe with possibilities for sequels (I'd personally love to see Pledge unfold into a franchise). We sat down with Daniel Robinson (director), Zack Weiner (writer and actor), and Zach Byrd (one of the main actors) from Pledge, and explored the key lessons of indie horror filmmaking that they learned while making Pledge. Here are key insights from the guys of Pledge: It's all about the DP, baby. By DP, I obviously mean Director of Photography, you perverts. Your DP is the person who can make your low-budget movie look way more expensive. Have you ever started watching a super low-budget movie, and because of the low production value you find yourself completely checking out of it? It happens to me all the time, and I feel snobby saying it, but it's a real thing that you can't help. Because in order to psychologically believe a movie, it has to have a level of quality that translates to believability. This is critically important when making your first few films. The low-budget look can be a kiss of death for first-time film makers. It's critically important to make your movies have the highest production value possible. So take the time needed to find yourself an incredible Director of Photography, because they are the one who is going to show you how to make the movie you want to make. Daniel and Zack also mentioned the benefit of working with a DP who has a gaffer background, because they understand lighting really well. Turn your cast and crew into a brain trust. If there's a technical challenge on set, a flaw in the script, or any kind of hiccup during production, toss the challenge out to your cast and crew to help solve. When filming, you have dozens of creative people all around you, and chances are, someone on your set has dealt with the same issue before or will approach the problem from a different perspective than you do. Your job as the director isn't necessarily to have all the answers, instead your job is to find all the answers. Your cast and your crew can be your best problem solvers and collaborators. Not to utilize them is a wasted opportunity. Create a director checklist. Dan has a whole list of specific pieces of advice and insight from other directors. For every movie he works on, Dan picks five specific insights that he turns into a checklist. Then he checks it off every day of filming to make sure he is maximizing his opportunity as a director. Dan also took a cue from what Coppola did on The Godfather and wrote out the potential pitfalls for each scene to make sure they all worked as well as possible. If you're reading this, you probably read director interviews and watch feature length commentaries, so start your own list. EVERNOTE is a great place to start. Wouldn't you want to walk on set with a checklist of advice from people like Coppola, Scorsese, and Tarantino? Make your list, and keep it with you when you shoot, or even write. This week, the Grue-Crew present two films from IFC Midnight. We start off the New Year with a tale of Hazing Horror and a yarn about a college girl out of her element. The first film this week is PLEDGE from directors Daniel Robbins, featuring a trio of college nerds looking to join a fraternity only to choose the worse option possible. The second film is RUST CREEK from director Jen McGowan, featuring a college girl lost in the Kentucky wilderness running from drug dealers with only a meth cook to aid her escape.  Doc Rotten and Vanessa Thompson from Horror News Radio along with Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era share their thoughts about this week's awesome collection of streaming horror films. Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 049 PLEDGE - RUST CREEK Pledge A group of college freshmen pledge an exclusive fraternity but soon realize there's more at stake than they could have ever imagined. "Once you get into the meat of it - the hazing - and the things that take place after that, that’s where the tension really ramps up and the characters really stretch their legs, especially our three potential club members. We see some really strong acting from (Zack Weiner, Phillip Andre Botello, and Zachery Byrd) and some really strong character development." - Vanessa "It’s really well made; it looked really good and I didn’t see a weak spot in the acting anywhere. … It’s a well-told story." - Jeff "I really liked this film. I had a good time with it. … The environment that they find themselves in is presented in such a seductive way that they are all in until they realize that they shouldn’t be and it’s too late." - Doc Director: Daniel Robbins Cast: Zachery Byrd, Phillip Andre Botello, Aaron Dalla Villa Release: OPENING IN THEATERS AND VOD ON JANUARY 11TH from IFC MIDNIGHT Rust Creek An overachieving college student gets lost on her way to a job interview. A wrong turn leaves her stranded deep in the Kentucky forest. The woman must defend herself against the harsh elements and a band of ruthless outlaws. She is forced into an uneasy alliance with a strange loner who has unknown intentions. "I loved the Sawyer character because … (she) really shows her character and personality in small moments, in quiet moments. You see her strength and her perseverance and her willingness to do whatever it takes to survive and not give up." - Vanessa "Micah Hauptman as Hollister just oozed sleaziness and immorality. He was the stereotypical backwoods, bad guy and he did it so well." - Jeff "The director did a great job! I’m definitely looking forward to seeing whatever Jen McGowan (will put) out next because I think she has quite the eye and the knack for telling a story." - Doc Director: Jen McGowan Cast: Hermione Corfield, Micah Hauptman, Sean O'Bryan. But dollars follow eyeballs, and eyeballs -- at least on the traditional broadcast -- are going elsewhere. "If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else,” Yogi Berra once said.
