The Designed for the Creative Mind podcast hosted by Michelle Lynn is a must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration, advice, and personal growth. Michelle Lynn's unique blend of wisdom, humor, and love shines through in each episode, making it a joy to listen to. Her guests are top-notch and offer invaluable insights on a wide range of topics.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its relatability and applicability to everyone, not just designers. Michelle's advice is not only relevant to those in the design industry but also to anyone who wants to become the best version of themselves. Her guests bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be applied to various aspects of life and business. The discussions are engaging, thought-provoking, and filled with practical takeaways.

Another standout aspect of this podcast is its educational value. As someone who works with interior designers but isn't one myself, I have found this podcast incredibly informative. It has given me a deeper understanding of the interior design industry and has equipped me with knowledge that helps me better serve my clients. Furthermore, it has provided valuable tips on how to improve my own business practices.

However, one potential downside for some listeners may be the inclusion of religious references in some episodes. While Michelle presents her faith with love and authenticity, those who prefer their podcasts to be strictly secular may find it off-putting. However, I would encourage listeners to give it a chance because the actual content and takeaways from each episode transcend any specific religious beliefs.

In conclusion, The Designed for the Creative Mind podcast is an exceptional resource for personal growth and professional development. Michelle Lynn's expertise combined with her infectious personality make for an enjoyable listening experience that leaves you feeling inspired and motivated. Whether you're a designer seeking industry insights or simply looking for strategies to improve your life and business, this podcast comes highly recommended.

S3 Ep. 179 Burnout Bakeout: When Hustle Turns Hazardous

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2025 18:20

Today's episode is one that's coming straight from the heart (and maybe a little from the edge of a breakdown). We're talking burnout—not the cute kind that gets fixed with a latte and a nap, but the crispy, crunchy, why-did-I-say-yes-to-this kind of burnout that so many interior designers are quietly dealing with. I'm calling it Burnout Bake Out—yes, it's on brand with our new Bake House theme, but also because when you're fried and flaking apart at the seams, it's not just burnout, babe. That's what happens when the oven's been on too long and no one remembered to set a timer. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what burnout really looks like for us as designers—taking on too much, ghosting ourselves, and losing sight of why we started our businesses in the first place. If you've ever fantasized about quitting and moving to a goat farm (yes, I've been there), this one's for you. What we cover in this episode: The rookie mistake most designers make that leads straight to burnout Why saying yes to every project is not a badge of honor The difference between being busy and being profitable (they are not the same) How I ended up juggling six full-home projects and almost lost my mind The exact script you can use when you need to reset expectations with a client Why clients aren't hiring you to be perfect—they're hiring you to lead How to bake in rest, white space, and recovery time into your business Practical ways to protect your energy and say “hell yes” only to the right projects   Let's be real for a second... Burnout is not your business model. Working yourself into the ground isn't a sign of success—it's a sign that your systems, pricing, or boundaries need some love. And I want you to know: you're allowed to rest. Renegotiating timelines doesn't make you flaky—it makes you a pro. If this episode hit home, send it to a fellow designer who's just one “sure, I can do that” away from burnout. Let's normalize the hard conversations, the boundaries, and the brave decision to pause when needed. And if you're ready for more support, tools, and some breathing room in your design business, come hang out with us over at thedesignbakehouse.com. There's something waiting for you there. S3 Ep. 178 Time Trap: Charging By the Hour

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2025 15:27

Hey there, welcome back to Designed for the Creative Mind! Today we're diving into a topic that hits way too close to home for so many designers — the dreaded “time trap”. Yep, I'm talking about hourly billing and the never-ending stress of tracking every bathroom break like you're auditioning for TaskRabbit. If you've ever stayed up late trying to remember how long that third round of tile edits took… this episode is for you. What we're talking about in this episode: Why charging by the hour feels “responsible” but wrecks your profits (and sanity) How hourly pricing turns you into a technician instead of a trusted expert Why your efficiency should be rewarded, not penalized How to handle clients who want a minute-by-minute breakdown A real-life example of switching to a flat fee (and how it changed everything) How value-based pricing builds trust, boundaries, and breathing room for creativity I'm walking you through my own journey of breaking free from hourly billing — the mistakes I made, the lessons I learned, and how I now coach other designers (like my client “Jess”) to make this shift with confidence. Here's the big takeaway: Clients are paying for your genius, not your time. It's time to stop selling hours and start selling transformation. If you're ready to ditch the time trap and step into your role as a creative professional (with pricing that reflects it), let's chat. Book a call with me or my team and let's get you out of hourly hell. Remember — you're not alone. And you don't have to stay stuck. Until next time, keep rising — one decision at a time. S3 Ep. 177 Spolier: I Burned the Old Recipe

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2025 7:01

Hey y'all, welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind — the podcast where we dive into the business side of interior design with strategy, heart, and zero fluff. Today's episode is a big one because I'm giving you a behind-the-scenes look at some major changes we've been cooking up. I'm thrilled to share that my coaching platform has officially rebranded! While the podcast will keep its name (Design for the Creative Mind), everything else now lives under a new and very on-theme umbrella: The Design Bakehouse. Why the Change? If you've been around for a while, you know that Design for the Creative Mind wasn't just a podcast — it was also the name of my entire coaching business. But as things have grown and evolved (just like your design business!), it became clear that we'd outgrown that structure. Our community has expanded, our content has deepened, and we're now supporting designers at every stage — from launching to scaling past six figures. It was time for a brand that reflected the power of this work. Introducing: The Design Bakehouse Yes, I went all in on the baking theme — you know I love a good theme! The Design Bakehouse is now the home for all of our coaching programs, digital tools, and community. Think of it as a fully baked business ecosystem designed to help you rise. Inside The Bakehouse, you'll find: The Interior Design Business Bakery – our signature mentorship program Design From Scratch – for those starting fresh and ready to do it right The Key Ingredients – essential foundations for a thriving design business Our expanding product shop – with tools, digital resources, and freebies And yes, everything got a major glow-up — the branding, the clarity, the delivery. It's so pretty, y'all. Get a Taste with The Sampler Box To celebrate the launch, I've put together a delicious freebie for you: The Sampler Box. It's a curated preview of what The Bakehouse has to offer, and you can grab it at thedesignbakehouse.com.    Why The Bakehouse? A bakehouse isn't just where bread is made. It's where craftsmanship meets mastery, where recipes are refined, and where the best in the business perfect their skills. That's exactly the kind of environment we're creating — but instead of flour and sugar, we're working with strategy, sales, and systems to help interior designers build profitable, sustainable, and fulfilling businesses. So my question for you is: Are you ready to rise? Whether you're brand new or fully booked, if you're craving structure, support, and a plan that actually works, The Bakehouse was baked just for you. The Podcast Isn't Going Anywhere Design for the Creative Mind — the podcast — will stay right here, continuing to bring you honest conversations about the business of interior design every single week. But now, it's cozily nestled inside The Design Bakehouse. Thanks for being here. I built this for designers just like you, and I cannot wait to see what we create together inside The Bakehouse. Ep. 176 Retail Rookie - Why Shopping Like a Client Costs You

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2025 21:53

Hey, hey, hey – welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind! This season, we're talking all about rookie mistakes and real talk – the stuff that's keeping so many talented designers stuck. And today? We're hitting a big one: shopping retail. Yep. I'm talking about that habit of ordering from Pottery Barn, HomeGoods, or West Elm, skipping your trade vendors, and sending clients links instead of curated presentations. Sound familiar? I get it. I've been there myself—and I've coached hundreds of designers who've struggled with the same thing. Whether it's the fear of clients balking at markups, the desire to be “helpful,” or the looming fear of liability… retail feels like the easy button. But babe—it's not. It's costing you big time. What I cover in this episode: Why retail shopping chips away at your profits, your positioning, and your authority How sending links is training your clients to bypass you Why markup is NOT a dirty word (and how to confidently talk about profit) Real talk from a designer named Lindsay who learned this the hard way The difference between being a personal shopper vs. a professional designer How to shift your business model so sourcing becomes a strength—not a stressor The mindset shift that leads to a more profitable, scalable, and luxury-level business Here's the truth: when you rely on retail, you lose control—of the quality, of the client experience, and of your income. Your design becomes replicable. Your service looks DIY. And your value? Flattened. But when you embrace trade sourcing, you gain back authority, margin, and process. And yes, you can absolutely educate your clients about it without apologizing. So ask yourself: where are you defaulting to retail out of fear or convenience? And what would shift—financially, creatively, emotionally—if you trusted yourself to lead like a CEO?   You're not selling stuff. You're selling an experience. A transformation. A feeling when someone walks into a room and says “Wow.” And that? That's worth protecting. Sure! Here's a set of conversational, first-person podcast shownotes based on your transcript: Hey, hey! Welcome back to The Designed for the Creative Mind podcast. I'm Michelle Lynne, and y'all are in for a treat today. I sat down with the incredibly talented Bekah Hernandez, the founder and principal of Rebekah  Nicole Interiors here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area—and this conversation is such a gem, especially if you're in the early years of growing your interior design business. Bekah launched her firm in the middle of the 2020 pandemic (yes, that 2020!) and has grown it into a soulful, elevated brand known for furnishings and cosmetic updates—no major renos here. She's built her business around what brings her joy, and she's proof that you can do design your way and still build something thriving and profitable. What we cover in this episode: How Bekah went from studying in Australia to building her dream design firm in Texas Why she chose to specialize in furnishings and styling (and how it's brought her the most joy) The difference between cosmetic updates vs. full-scale renovations—and how she's made it work How she built a business model around a la carte and virtual services to stay profitable year-round Her approach to building a lean, supportive team (hint: she found some folks from this very podcast!) Tips for using smaller projects as both “paid marketing” and portfolio builders How she trusts her intuition to make smart business decisions Bekah is living proof that you can build a design business on your own terms. Whether you're just starting out or looking to pivot into a more joy-filled business model, I know you're going to take away so many gems from this one. Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 17:33

Hey y'all, welcome back to the Designed for the Creative Mind Podcast! I'm so glad you're here. We're kicking off a brand new season: Rookie Mistakes and Real Talk — where I'm mixing up business blunders and behind-the-scenes truths from running an interior design firm. Today's episode is for every designer who's ever said “yes” when they really wanted to scream “oh hell no” — and then paid the price for it. We're diving into the sneaky ways people pleasing shows up in client relationships, why it's so damaging to your business, and how to set boundaries like the confident CEO you are (even if you feel a little nasally like I do — thanks, Texas allergies!). What we cover in this episode: What people pleasing actually looks like in an interior design business How saying "yes" all the time leads to scope creep, burnout, and resentment Why being liked is not the same as being trusted — and why trust matters more Real talk about the mindset shift from being "kind" to being a true leader A story about my client Claire, who broke the people-pleasing cycle (and how you can too) Practical examples of how to set confident, kind boundaries without feeling pushy Why you are a business, not a bestie (and why that's a GOOD thing!) Big takeaway: Running your business with clear leadership and boundaries doesn't make you mean — it makes you trustworthy. Your clients want you to lead them. If you're bending over backwards for approval, it's time to rethink it. Being liked isn't nearly as valuable as being trusted. If this episode hit home for you: Take a screenshot and share the one boundary you're going to practice this week! Tag me on Instagram at @designedforthecreativemind or come share in our Facebook group, The Interior Designers' Business Launchpad. I would love to cheer you on! And if you loved what you heard, don't keep it to yourself — send this episode to a fellow designer who could use a little nudge, and leave a review wherever you're listening. Your reviews seriously help this show grow, and I appreciate every single one. Coming up next week: We're tackling why shopping retail could be wrecking your profits and how to explain trade pricing without sounding defensive. You definitely don't want to miss it. Remember: Success doesn't happen by chance — it happens by design. Keep designing your business with intention. I know, I know—email marketing might not sound as sexy as social media, but trust me, it's a game-changer for your interior design business. If you've ever felt like you're screaming into the social media void, this episode is for you. Welcome back to the podcast designed for the creative mind! Today, we're diving into the world of marketing—but not in the way you might expect. If marketing has ever felt salesy, sleazy, or just overwhelming, this conversation is for you. I'm joined by Veronica Romney, a certified master marketer, keynote speaker, podcast host, and author with over 17 years of experience shaping marketing strategies for some of the biggest brands. Her book, Identity Marketing, completely shifts the way we think about attracting the right clients and customers. Instead of just selling, we're talking about connecting—deeply—with who your audience is and who they want to become. What We Cover in This Episode: Veronica's journey into marketing (spoiler: she thought she'd be in finance!) Hey, hey! Welcome back to the podcast! It's just me today, and we're diving into marketing—again! If you caught the last episode, you know we're doing a little marketing series.  if we haven't met yet, I'm Michelle Lynne, owner of ML Interiors Group—an award-winning, seven-figure interior design firm in Dallas, Texas. I've got one foot in design and two feet in coaching interior designers on how to scale to multiple six figures with profit and passion. You're in the right place if you're a designer who's hit five figures and is ready to level up!   Let's talk about what's working in today's market—because, let's be real, things are different. My design firm slowed down last year, and what worked back in 2019-2022? Yeah, not quite the same now. But here's the thing—sometimes, you've just got to come back to the basics. That's what we're doing today—getting clear on your unique brand and ideal client so your marketing actually works.   Step 1: Define Your Unique Brand When you try to speak to everyone, you end up speaking to no one. Your brand is more than just your logo and colors—it's how you communicate, the voice you use, and how you show up in your business. I learned this the hard way.  So, let's do a little exercise: - What do you want for your business? - What types of projects excite you? - What kind of revenue and lifestyle do you want? - How would you describe your brand's personality? Jot it all down. No wrong answers. The more clear you get, the more your brand will resonate with the right people.    Step 2: Discover Your Ideal Client Your ideal client needs to evolve with you. If you're still marketing to the same people you were three years ago, it's time for a refresh. When we revisited our ideal client profile, we noticed patterns—our best clients had second homes, their kids were old enough to dress themselves but not old enough to drive, and the moms were stay-at-home moms who *wanted* a beautiful home but didn't know how to make it happen. Once we defined that, our marketing became way more effective. If you're newer in business and don't have past clients to analyze, that's okay! Create an avatar.   Think about: - What problems do they have that would lead them to hire you? - What are their interests and hobbies? - What's their family dynamic? - Where do they shop? What brands do they love? - What kind of careers do they have? The clearer you get, the easier it will be to create content that speaks directly to them. And here's the magic—when you market to *one* specific type of client, you actually attract more of them!    What's Next? If you're feeling a little slow in business, this is the perfect time to revisit your branding and ideal client. Welcome back to the podcast! I'm so excited for today's episode because I get to introduce you to someone I've known for a few years now—and I think I can officially call her a friend. Meet Gaia Filippi! she's an Italian-born, California-raised, now-Dallas-based interior designer with a serious talent for creating unique, personality-filled spaces.   Gaia has a background in high-end fashion, and let me tell you, she brings that sharp eye for design into her interior work. She believes in blending creativity with problem-solving precision—right brain meets left brain. She's also known for her unfiltered, straight-shooting opinions, which, if you know me, you know I absolutely love. In this episode, we dive into Gaia's journey from the world of PR and celebrity relations in luxury fashion to her thriving interior design career.   We talk about: - How her background in high-end fashion influences her design approach. - Working with clients who have different budgets and expectations (and why you shouldn't assign your own wallet to your clients!). - The importance of craftsmanship and quality materials—plus, what she learned from visiting European factories where perfection is the standard. - Why your past career—whether in marketing, finance, teaching, or even being a stay-at-home parent—can bring valuable skills to your business. - The biggest mistake she made early in her business (spoiler: it was ignoring marketing!) and how she's fixing it now. - The importance of consistent lead generation, even when you're busy, and how she's using blogging, networking, and PR to stay visible.   We also chat about what she'd be doing if she weren't designing (hint: it involves food!), and she shares a major lesson learned about keeping her marketing pipeline full—because even when you're booked out, you need to be thinking about the next wave of clients. Gaia's insights are a must-hear for any creative entrepreneur, especially if you've ever struggled with balancing the business side of things. Hey y'all, it's Michelle Lynne here! Happy New Year, and welcome to the first episode of 2025 on Design for the Creative Mind! I'm kicking off this year with a theme that I think we all need: how to select and secure new clients. After a challenging 2024, where client inquiries slowed down and timelines stretched longer than usual, I've learned a lot about pivoting and simplifying sales and marketing processes. In this episode, I'm sharing the key lessons and strategies my team at ML Interiors Group implemented—and what's working as we head into 2025. Here's What You'll Learn in This Episode: Adjusting to Longer Sales Cycles We noticed that signing a client took 6–8 weeks instead of 3–4 weeks. I'll share how we adapted, including breaking projects into phases to meet clients where they are financially. The Power of Automation From automated email reminders to streamlining communication through SideMark (our software platform), we've enhanced professionalism, built excitement, and made appointment confirmations a breeze. Done is Better Than Perfect Discover how we refined our design presentations to save time while still delivering a stellar client experience—and increased our margins in the process. Why Social Media Still Matters Yes, social media can feel overwhelming and outdated. But it's a powerful gateway to building your email list (where the real magic happens). I'll explain how using the E.I.E.I.O. method (Educate, Inform, Entertain, Inspire, Opt-in) keeps your audience engaged and drives results. Owning Your Money Mindset Your clients' financial stories aren't the same as yours. Luxury clients value time-saving solutions—and your expertise is a significant part of that value. Key Takeaways: Focus on what you can control—your mindset, processes, and client communication. Social media doesn't need to be perfect. Be yourself, and your ideal clients will find you. Use freemiums or lead magnets (like guides or checklists) to build your email list. Pro tip: Offer something valuable that isn't easily found on Google or Pinterest. I'll be breaking down more sales and marketing strategies in future episodes, including tips for email marketing and SEO. Stay tuned for actionable advice and insights that will help you attract and secure clients more efficiently this year!     Head over to my website to download my free guide, 3 Things to Do Before Hiring an Interior Designer, and learn how to set your next project up for success. Hey everyone! Welcome back to the podcast. I'm so excited to share this conversation with Ben Rousseau, an award-winning lighting artist and luxury product designer based in Hove, UK. Ben's creative journey is nothing short of inspiring, and today, we dive into his story, his work, and his passion for designing with light. Ben's story starts in Colchester, England's oldest recorded town. Growing up surrounded by ancient castles, he dreamed of shaping the future, fueled by the imaginative worlds of James Bond and Star Wars. His fascination with lighting began early, as he marveled at the dramatic, futuristic sets of Ken Adam's Bond films.   This passion led him to study film special effects and model making, where he discovered the emotional and transformative power of light. Over the years, Ben's career has evolved into a multidisciplinary exploration of lighting, art, and design. From furniture for nightclubs to high-tech timepieces and sculptural chairs like his stunning “California Chair,”   Ben infuses every project with a sense of drama and innovation. His work is all about creating connection—whether it's through the cozy glow of a lamp or the mesmerizing patterns of light on a wall. Ben's philosophy is rooted in the idea that lighting isn't just functional; it's emotional. He wants his designs to help people pause, appreciate the moment, and reconnect with their surroundings. Whether he's designing for a sleek modern home or a dramatic Bond-villain-esque interior, his work is always about pushing boundaries and telling a story. In this episode, we also chat about the challenges of conveying the magic of lighting to clients, how Ben builds trust with them, and the collaborative process that brings his visions to life.   Ben shares some behind-the-scenes insights into his design process, including how he considers the interplay of light, space, and materials to create environments that are as practical as they are beautiful. Finally, we touch on the importance of having fun with design and how creativity can turn even the most stressful projects into memorable experiences. Ben's passion for innovation and his commitment to lighting up people's lives shine through every part of our conversation. If you're ready to be inspired by the power of light, don't miss this episode! And be sure to check out Ben's work on his website—it's something you truly have to see to believe.    Podcast Website and Resources: Get more info about our year-long mentorship and coaching program: https://www.designedforthecreativemind.com/business-bakery   Text BESTIE to 855-784-8299 for business tips, encouragement, and all our DFCM updates.   SIMPLIFY YOUR MARKETING, SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE. Episode Summary Hey, friends! It's Michelle Lynne, and today on Design for the Creative Mind, I'm thrilled to introduce you to someone truly special—Krystal Reinhard, the CEO and principal designer of Old Soul Design Studio. Krystal and I go way back, connecting through my Interior Design Business Bakery, and we've had the joy of meeting in person several times. In this episode, we dive into Krystal's design-build journey, her unique aesthetic, and how her experiences have shaped her thriving business. Krystal's business, Old Soul Design Studio, operates as a full-service design-build firm with a showroom in downtown West Chester, Pennsylvania. She shares how the firm has evolved over the years, shifting from a seven-day-a-week showroom to a more strategic hybrid model that accommodates both public and private spaces. It's fascinating to hear how she balances a robust portfolio of renovation projects, furnishings, and showroom management with a committed focus on transparency and client education. We also talk about how her European heritage, coupled with her cross-country experiences, influences her design style. Krystal's aesthetic beautifully marries West Coast Mediterranean vibes with the timeless charm of East Coast architecture. And yes, that passion for blending styles is a nod to her “old soul” nature—something people have called her since she was young. A big highlight of this episode is learning about the intentional way Krystal handles the design-to-build process. She explains why design comes first, followed by construction planning, which allows for better budget transparency and project execution. Her emphasis on creating a high-touch, tailored client experience stands out in an industry often riddled with miscommunications and unexpected costs. We also dive into her personal journey. Krystal shares how her upbringing as a first-generation American and her background in fine arts and education shaped her approach to design. She reflects on the challenges of being a woman on construction sites, the lessons learned from working with both great and not-so-great contractors, and how she's built a team of craftspeople she trusts deeply. This conversation is brimming with insights—whether you're a homeowner planning a renovation, a designer building your business, or just someone who loves hearing about design journeys, you're going to love this episode! Key Takeaways from Our Conversation Krystal's Unique Aesthetic: From California's Spanish-Mediterranean influences to the colonial charm of Pennsylvania, her work celebrates diverse architectural styles. The Design-Build Approach: Krystal walks us through her process of designing first, focusing on client needs, and then creating realistic construction budgets, ensuring a smooth and transparent experience. Empowering Women in the Industry: Krystal shares how she's navigated construction sites with confidence and mentors her team to do the same. The Story Behind Old Soul: A reflection of her love for timeless design, cultural influences, and a belief in having "been here before." Hey y'all! Welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind! Today, I'm diving into a question that came straight from Instagram—thanks to Louise from Design in Ireland. She reached out with a great one: "How can interior designers set boundaries with flat-fee clients who sometimes get a bit too comfortable asking for extra time?" Here's a peek at what I cover in this solo episode: Sales Process Essentials: I break down my client process, from initial calls to meet-and-greets. It's all about educating clients upfront on how we work and setting boundaries from day one. The Power of the Scope of Work: Having a detailed scope is everything. I'll share how we make sure our clients understand what's included—and what's not. This scope can also help clients understand why changes can lead to additional costs. Leveraging the Contract: I talk about using our Letter of Agreement (a friendly contract) to reinforce expectations. This doc lays out unique clauses, like only showing the best option for each item, limits on revisions, and the number of site visits included. Scheduling & Time Management: Pre-scheduling meetings has been a lifesaver for both my team and our clients. It keeps us on track and gives clients a sense of urgency without feeling rushed. Adding a Contract End Date: I explain why we include a project timeline so clients stay motivated, and so we have a framework if the project takes longer than expected. Tracking Data for Better Flat Fees: It's a must to track how much time each task really takes. I share how I use that data to refine our flat fees and ensure they work for us financially.   I hope this helps! And to anyone else with burning questions about the business of design, I'd love to hear from you. If you shoot over your questions, I'll either devote an episode to your topic or gather a few for a "What Would Michelle Do?" segment!   Thanks for listening, and remember to choose greatness every day! Hey there, welcome back to the podcast! Today, I have an inspiring conversation for you with Allison Handler, the founder and principal designer of Allison Handler Design, based out of New Jersey. Allison's journey to interior design wasn't exactly traditional—she started in the world of fashion and merchandising in New York City.   She had a dream to be like the iconic Carrie Bradshaw, and she made it happen, working with major names like Donna Karen. But after 20 years, she found herself craving something more fulfilling, especially after getting a taste of work-from-home life during COVID.   Allison talks about how interior design organically found her through the homes she renovated with her family. Friends and family started asking for her help with their own spaces, and her design business quickly grew from creating mood boards on Etsy to her first full-home design project. It wasn't always smooth sailing, though. Allison shares how she started out juggling her full-time job, family life, and her budding design business before finally taking the leap to go full-time with her own brand.   Key Highlights: Finding Your Niche Through Experience:  Allison discusses how she figured out her own style and brand by taking on any and every project early on, learning along the way, and eventually niching down to clients who resonate with her aesthetic.   The Power of Social Media:  Allison attributes much of her business's growth to social media, especially Instagram. By putting herself and her personality out there, she attracted clients who connected with her vibe and style. She emphasizes that being real and authentic online is her "secret sauce."   Building Client Relationships: In this industry, hiring an interior designer is a very personal decision. Allison values the relationships she builds with clients, explaining that designers are often involved in deeply personal aspects of a home and life. These connections, she believes, are what set her apart in a crowded market.   Balancing Business and Creativity:  With her background in fashion merchandising, Allison brings a unique mix of creativity and business acumen to her design work. She shares insights into budgeting, planning, and even “cost-engineering” to give her clients a high-end look within their budgets, especially when working with builders on spec homes.   The Importance of Having a Team: While clients may want to work directly with her, Allison shares the value of her small but talented team. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration in design and how her team helps elevate the overall vision of each project.   Allison's story is a fantastic example of blending passion with business, and she's a reminder that you can always reinvent yourself. If you're considering a career pivot or dreaming of turning your passion into a business, you'll love Allison's story and the practical advice she shares.   Thanks for joining me and Allison for this deep dive into the world of interior design. Wet Dog creates tiles that defy typical geometric shapes—think starfish-shaped tiles rather than standard square tiles. The designs range from ocean-inspired themes to custom pet portraits and are crafted using a mix of ceramic, glass mosaics, crushed glass, and pebbles to add texture and color.   Beth shares how the company name was inspired by her involvement in animal rescue and living in a coastal town. 136. March Madness - Remembering Our Word of the Year

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2024 19:32

Hello, everyone! In this solo episode of Designed for the Creative Mind, I delve into the concept of having a "word of the year" and how it can guide and influence your personal and professional life.   I started contemplating my word of the year during the fourth quarter and honed in on it around Thanksgiving. Initially, I considered words like "mindful," "clarity," and "wisdom," but none felt quite right. I wanted a word that resonated with me on a deeper level, something that could act as a beacon for decision-making and personal growth.   After much reflection, I landed on the word "align." This word encapsulates my desire to make choices that resonate with how I want to feel and the direction I want my life and business to take. It's about ensuring that my actions are in harmony with my goals, beliefs, and desired feelings.   A recent personal example of putting this word into action was the decision to sell our house. Despite its uniqueness and the memories we've created there, the idea of selling felt aligned with my desire for a simpler, less burdensome living situation.   I encourage you to find your own word of the year, no matter what time of year it is. It's a powerful tool that can provide clarity and direction. And remember, it's okay to change your word if it no longer serves you.   I'd love to hear your word of the year, so feel free to drop me a DM on Instagram at @designedforthecreativemind And if you enjoyed this episode, please consider leaving a review and joining our Facebook group, the Interior Designers Business Launchpad, for more business advice.   Until next time, keep striving for alignment in all that you do. Welcome back to another episode of Design for the Creative Mind, where we dive into the essentials of running a purposeful and passionate interior design business. I'm your host, Michelle Lin, and today we had the pleasure of speaking with the incredible Jude Charles, a master storyteller and documentary producer for entrepreneurs.   Jude has spent over 18 years crafting compelling narratives for clients like Google and Steve Harvey, and he's here to share his wisdom on the transformative power of storytelling in business. He's also the author of "Dramatic Demonstration," a guide that teaches entrepreneurs how to uncover and leverage their unique stories to grow their businesses.   In our conversation, Jude opened up about the importance of taking intentional breaks for personal reflection and growth. He shared his practice of taking two months off each year since 2013, which has allowed him to avoid burnout and maintain his creativity and passion for his work. Jude emphasized the clarity and insights that come from these periods of rest, which have led to the development of new offerings and a deeper understanding of what truly works in his business.   Jude also discussed the significance of vulnerability and authenticity in connecting with your audience. He believes that while every design is different, the process and the person behind the work should shine through. By sharing personal stories and the lessons learned from them, designers can differentiate themselves in a saturated market and attract clients who resonate with their unique perspective.   We delved into the practical aspects of storytelling, with Jude explaining how to identify the right stories to share and the importance of tying them back to your business values and mission. He also provided insights on how to balance personal sharing with professional boundaries, ensuring that your stories are relevant and impactful without oversharing.   Jude's message is clear: your stories are your superpower. They are what set you apart and make you memorable in the eyes of your clients. By embracing your experiences and sharing them with courage, you can create a deeper connection with your audience and drive your business forward.   So, if you're ready to harness the power of storytelling in your interior design business, make sure to follow Jude and check out his book for a roadmap to success. And remember, it's not just about the work you do; it's about who you are and the stories you tell.   Until next time, keep designing with purpose, efficiency, and passion. 132. Design Disasters: Responding to Negative Reviews with Michelle Lynne

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2024 17:01

Hey there, Design for the Creative Mind family! It's your host, Michelle Lynne, back with another episode that's sure to resonate with many of you. Today, we're diving into a topic that can be a thorn in the side of any business owner: negative reviews. But don't worry, I'm here to share some personal stories and strategies on how to handle them with grace and maintain your integrity.   In this episode, I recount a recent encounter with a negative review from a client I worked with nearly a decade ago. Yes, you heard that right—10 years ago! This client, let's call her Karen (because, well, that's her name), decided to take to the Nextdoor app to share her dissatisfaction. Despite the fact that we had resolved the issue privately all those years ago, Karen felt the need to warn others about my business.   I know how it feels to see your business's name dragged through the mud, especially when you've poured your heart and soul into it. But here's the thing—I want to show you how to respond to these situations without fear and without compromising your values. It's all about taking the high road, addressing the issue head-on, and offering to continue the conversation privately if necessary.   I also touch on the importance of having solid processes in place to avoid these kinds of client issues in the first place. That's something I teach in my Interior Design Business Bakery program, which is designed to help you run your business smoothly and avoid the sticky situations that can lead to negative reviews.   So, if you've ever faced a less-than-stellar review or you're worried about getting one in the future, this episode is for you. I'll walk you through how to handle it with your head held high and your business reputation intact. And remember, it's not about living in fear—it's about being prepared and knowing how to navigate the choppy waters of client relations with confidence.   Don't forget to check out the Interior Design Business Bakery for more tips on running a successful and organized design business. And if you've enjoyed this episode, I'd be over the moon if you could leave a positive review wherever you tune in to your podcasts. Let's keep elevating our industry together!   Until next time, live abundantly and be your amazing self.
