Achieving the Best Work-Life Balance: A Revolutionary Framework" - Embark on a journey towards achieving the best work-life balance with Joe, as he shares his unique 3D framework in this episode. Find how to reprogram your misconceptions and create an intentional plan for your family's future. Discover, decide, and do - the three new rules of work-life balance.
What do you do when you feel too weak to lead? What do you do when you know how you're supposed to lead your family, but you're not sure how to get yourself to do it? Today is a hard day for me. No specific reason. I'm just off... very off. There are a couple times during the year, when I face fairly strong bouts with depression. Over the years, I've learned tools and ways to manage it. I've learned to look for precursors - things that might be leading into it. And I've learned to set up safety nets: people to reach out to... meditations to do... foods to stay away from... but sometimes all those things put together are just not enough. Today is one of those days where I don't really know why... but I just want to stay in bed... and hide... and cry. Which makes it really weird that I'm doing this right now, because this is very out of alignment for how I feel. But I will post this for no other reason than maybe there's somebody out there that feels the same way... and would like to know how to get through it.
One of the biggest challenges any leader can face is knowing how to set the right expectations. Too often in the home, our expectations borderline perfection. Business 101 is that if you close every sale, you're either not charging enough or you haven't talked to enough people yet. Consider record holding athletes such as Michael Jordan. He has hit more game-winning buzzer beaters than anyone else in the history of the NBA.But he only made 45% - less than half - of the game-winning buzzer beaters he took.Jim Thome holds the Major League Baseball record for the most walk-off home runs. Thome had 13 walk-off home runs in his career. Now compare that number 13 to over 2,500 games he played in during his career. The examples go on, but more important is your answer to these next two questions. First, why do you set yourself up to fail at leading your family by creating unrealistic expectations? And second, how do you manage expectations as a leader in your home? I'm going to answer both of those with you. But first, let me share a story.
When you strive to improve as a leader in your home, you will face challenges that make you feel like you are not progressing. The truth is, anyone can lead when things are rosy and everything is going well. It's how you respond to the storms that will set you apart. There's one mantra that has saved many of my work relationships with clients, colleagues, and employees. And it's also done a lot to help save relationships with my family.
What if you could see decades into the future of how the choices you make now would impact your family?Specifically your choices on how you lead your family… would you be scared to find out? There may be some in your business or at your job that think you're a natural born leader. The way you lead teams… the way you lead projects... the way you lead clients… may feel automatic and natural. And yet when it comes to being a leader in your home... how often does that feel awkward and unnatural? How often does leading your family feel more difficult? And how many times do you wonder if it would be easier to step back and allow your spouse to take care of leading the home? Attempting to passively lead your family will cause you to lose your family. Here’s how I know…
Working from home is often considered a dream opportunity... until reality sets in. What do you do when screaming kids, innocent interruptions, household noise, and other distractions keep you from getting your work done, and are taking your business and family life out of balance? That's what we'll be discussing today... How to make working from home the ideal situation you once hoped it could be. We'll get to exactly how we're going to do that. But first, let me share a story with you. It had been about three months since I started working solely from home, and I could no longer focus. Every interruption triggered my already existing fears and "what if" questions. It was almost like I was looking for an outside excuse to fail because then I would have something external to blame. Instead of finding out I just wasn't good enough to succeed in my dream. But what was my family supposed to do now that I was working from home? Were my little kids supposed to stop laughing and playing?Could movies and tv only be watched if they were wearing headphones?Blenders, vacuums, doorbells, closing doors, clinking pans, musical toys, visitors, phone calls, honking horns, and every kind of noise making element around me... did that all have to be banned during work hours? There's no way. While my expectations weren't as extreme as what I just mentioned, they were still unrealistic. And those expectations were hurting my personal relationships and my professional productivity. So what was I to do?
You’ve heard the phrase “When it rains, it pours.” So how can you stay afloat when you're struck by the perfect storm of stress? Imagine having a full-time job... a part-time business... doing an accelerated MBA program... with a pregnant wife... during the holiday seasons. Does something like that sound familiarI've been there and all I can say is wow. But it doesn't have to be a slew of major life events all at once to make you feel like stress is bombarding you from every angle. Sometimes, it could be all the moving parts of a single activity, such as launching a new product. Or it could be as simple as a single step that surprises you during your day and sets you back then leaves you feeling like you're racing to catch up. Today I'm going to share with you a simple approach to defeating a multi-sided stress attack. Let me explain.
One of the most commonly mentioned challenges with living balanced is the challenge of time management. During my journey, I had the hardest time believing psychology experts that said positive change, like improving my time management, could be as easy as doing what I'm going to share with you today. But first, I need to share a story that I really didn't want to share.
