“Send Coach John a message”Simple one today for sure. A reminder for all of us to just take the time, or find the time, but to MAKE the time to do something good for ourselves! This all came about from our dog yesterday. I was busy focusing on something here on my computer. He hopped out of his chair and went looking outside at our patio, which had plenty of sunshine on it. He came back to me and started staring at me. I asked him what he wanted. He kept staring at me and then little whimperings started being directed my way. So I knew it was something important. He took me over to the doorwall and I let him out. He stopped in the sunshine on the patio and looked back at me. You see, he loves sitting in the sun in one of our chairs on the patio. But, it's still February and we have the outdoor furniture put away. But I knew exactly what he wanted. So I got one of our camping chairs out of the garage and set it up for him. He hopped up into it and I went back inside - but he kept staring at me. So, I knew he wanted me to come sit with him. I went to get one of my hoodies on, came outside and we sat out there for maybe 20 minutes or so. WOW.. did that sunshine feel good on my face and he had a wonderful time sitting on my lap! He knew that I would like sitting out there with him too and he was totally right!! MAKE the time for yourself to get some fresh air, some sunshine and time with one of your best buddies. Or at least on your own just thinking, smiling and relaxing without your phone. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a fabulous post from Vala Afshar (@ValaAfshar) that reminds me to keep trying to be my best! These things that he's talking about are simple game changers for anyone who is looking to keep improving. Check this message out: “Be humble and kind. You could be wrong. Be forgiving. You also make mistakes. Be honest. Character is a door opener. Be generous. Givers sleep better at night. Be grateful. Luck seeks the thankful. Be courageous. Fight for your happiness. Be yourself, always. You will be happier.” Who doesn't want to be genuinely more happy? Happiness is fleeting most of the time. Joy is more permanent. But following these guidelines sure does help. I had a wonderful conversation with a waitress yesterday. She had just turned 30 and she has 3 kids. Her attitude around the entire restaurant was amazing!! I watched as she really took the time to talk to and listen with an older man that I could tell was a regular and how his face lit up with a huge smile for the connection she was showing to him. I made sure to thank her for being a positive example for all of us to learn from. I also mentioned that I recently turned 60 and that I remember how much better life got after 30 - she said she's seeing it already! These things that Vala is sharing - are part of not putting up with negative things… and she mentioned that is what she's doing more of. That is a powerful thing to get control over!! “Send Coach John a message”Super lesson here - I needed this reminder to keep striving to be kind to others. From Spencer Rayner (@spencerrayner) “Retweet from @ColinSpenc4257 Thought of The Day. #SuccessTRAIN #JoyTRAIN - You're never too important to be nice to people!” Simple message, yet for some people it's the most challenging thing ever! You can be successful, heck even rich and “important”, but don't ever think that entitles you to be a mean person to others. We need to be better. We need to do better! “Send Coach John a message”I came across a quote that really connected with what I've been drawn to a lot lately. It's from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) and it reminds us about this: “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” - Eleanor Roosevelt. Now, this has made me think about how great minds talk about ideas and things to make things better for others and themselves. To solve problems. To come up with inspiration to help others. Average minds talk about the weather. Events that may be popular and even important on some levels, but they don't pull out any lessons from those events to make things better. Small minds - they just love to point out faults of others. To “arm-chair” quarterback, always saying they could do better than so and so in charge, but in reality - they don't do much to help out or to solve problems. They gossip a lot. I've been all three types - all throughout my life, heck … even yesterday I was all three. I know I need to strive to be more of a great mind for sure. We have way too many “small minds” around us. Don't believe me? Just watch the news a bit to see them and look around online too.The other thing that came up in this discussion was from Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_) - where this was shared: “It's a full time job to believe in yourself. No off days!” This goes hand in hand with raising the bar for ourselves and working towards having a great mind for sure! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Out walking our dog sharing some gratitude reflections on a special day for me. I started the day off with breakfast with one of my longtime friends (we have known each other for 55 years) and then some wonderful moments sitting with my wife before going out later with some friends to have a little “golfing” fun, then dinner after. My wife and I have been celebrating for a week or so along with carrying it out through the next few days. We saw my parents, my sister and her husband yesterday for a brunch celebration. It's been a great time and Gratitude has been a big part of me getting here. Find yours too. It's a difference maker for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Love these connections that present themselves to me, every single day! Now, I do go looking for them - but it is powerful to find things that others have put out there that are there to get my attention and to make a difference with me and others. I'm sure glad I'm able to pay attention a little bit in order to grab these gems. This one came from my reading of “Areté - Activate Your Heroic Potential” by Brian Johnson (@heroicbrian). From page 507 - this one is all about Efficient vs. Effective and how one is good for time and the other is good for people. What do you do when the doors you've worked for keep closing because of factors you can't control? In this episode, Rebeca Lopez Valerio shares how she turned “no” into fuel, built opportunities from scratch, and learned to lead with coraje, heart-forward courage rooted in identity, resilience, and values. Rebeca's story is powerful and deeply human. Born in Mexico with Indigenous roots from the Oaxaca/Puebla region, she immigrated to the U.S. at age four and navigated life as a first-generation student, while also carrying the realities of being undocumented during key years of her education and career journey. Together, we talk about what it really takes to keep showing up when the stakes are high, and how community can be the difference between feeling stuck and finding your way forward. In this episode, we cover: Indigenous heritage, language loss, and the impact of “dialects being looked down on” First-generation student survival: why community often beats 1:1 mentorship How to lead with ambition without being defined by hardship Rejection as strategy: building your brand through projects, businesses, and relationships Sustainable fashion + AI: how Apparel Assist aims to reduce clothing waste by starting in our closets Guest bio:Rebeca Lopez Valerio is a hardware engineer, entrepreneur, and community builder. “Send Coach John a message”I found first thing this morning a post shared from a favorite person of mine, Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) who is again, someone I connected with online and not in person… yet.. Who knows, maybe someday I will get a chance to meet face to face. Mark shared some thoughts before his post - “We have no idea what anyone is really dealing with. We have no idea of the battles they have faced & are still facing. Everyone is going through something so why not be kind. Why not offer compassion & gentleness knowing that we have no idea what someone is really going through.” This hit me hard as this morning, only after seeing some things online for 10 minutes or so, I got really sad and down as to what people continually do and say to others that simply don't do any good at all for anyone. I'm thinking about what Gary Vaynerchuk (@garyvee) says all the time. The people spewing out all of the hate, negativity, anger, blaming others, etc., are all simply showing the pain and anger they are trying to deal with in their lives. It's really a look into who they are, what they are thinking (or hiding) and they know no different as to how to deal with others. My thoughts on Mark's post was this: “Everyone … every single human being goes through tough times, battles, pain, fear, doubt, tears, etc. - To me it's the Great Human Connector to all of us! Throughout history this is something we've all had to deal with. For those always piling on, putting others down (1 of 2) - Making fun of others, intentionally causing trouble for others, causing others pain, etc.; Please figure out we are WAY more alike than we are different. View things from their perspective. All of us have been through the tough odds of even being born! It's not that difficult!” I'm continually getting down, sad, upset, even angry at all of this crud going on in our world. I refuse to jump in and start bashing the “bashers” or spending tons of time looking up evidence to prove them wrong. I have chosen my voice and actions to make a difference with others and to try and offer hope to anyone willing to try and do the same. Life should be better than what we are creating it to be. We can (and must) do better and be better for ourselves, our loved ones and for the good of others. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found this gem from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it is a short, yet powerful thought… “Consistency is the silent engine of extraordinary results.” Every day. Every way to just keep going!! It's one of those things that again, nobody has to know about what you are doing or how often you are doing them. Those that love you will know without you even telling them. It's a reminder to me to keep doing what I have to do every day. It's a choice to keep showing up to do the things I know I have to do. It's my honor to keep being my best in being a dad, husband, son, uncle, brother, etc. I can't take any of those roles for granted. Wow.. love this thought! “Send Coach John a message”I found a post from Vala Afshar (@ValaAfshar) where he shared a clip from the incredible Mr. Rogers. See the clip HERE. A gentle reminder for all: “We just don't get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others. Think about those who have helped you become who you are today. What really matters is helping others win too.” —Fred Rogers This got me thinking about so much that we all have connections to. The people in our lives - the ones that made a difference with me, I'm grateful for all of them. There are so many people out there that forget this fact. They are the ones that think they did a lot on their own and we all need to remember where we came from and the people that helped us and walked our pathway with us. It's time for us to keep working on ourselves so we can keep helping others win too! IT sure beats tearing others down, making fun of others and looking to do things to cause problems for others. “Send Coach John a message”Another gem from Inky Johnson (@inkyjohnson) and he shares his thoughts about “The language of GRATITUDE!” Check out the clip HERE. He opens up with a very strong thought that I've never made a connection to! If we forget the language of gratitude - we will never be on speaking terms with happiness. Focusing on the things I'm grateful for - every single day - that helps to keep depression, emotional downturns, feeling bad about myself, getting worked up about my worries and the worries of the world - they cannot exist in a grateful heart! Inky's whole thought about gratitude “recalibrates” us and puts us in the right spot to be better, do better, listen better, learn better, etc. In today's world - I need that for sure!! How about you?? Do me and yourself, a favor. Go out there and get connected with Inky Johnson. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Came across the gem that I plan on actually using later today when I go out to run some errands. It comes from TeacherGoals (@teachergoals) The intro they shared is: “Love this!” - “When you see something beautiful in someone, tell them. It may take a second to say, but for them it could last a lifetime.” This is so spot on. I've been trying to say things to people when I come across something that I see about them. Good service. A smile. An act of kindness that I witness them doing. A compliment to share with them. Etc., it's all something that the world needs more of. “Send Coach John a message”Reading my every day Kindle post from John Maxwell's “Daily Reader” and this one hit home for today. It's all about "Ratchet Up Your Passion!” He starts out with a powerful question - What makes it possible for people who might seem ordinary to achieve great things? The answer is passion. He also shares 4 truths about passion. One, Passion is the first step to achievement. Two, Passion increases your Will-power. Three, Passion changes you, and Four, Passion Makes the Impossible Possible! This is something I tried to remind my students about all through my teaching career. It's something I remind myself about and other adults too - as it's a life-long quest to keep every day we have, somehow connected to things that we are fired up about. All of this comes from John Maxwell's book, “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.” I am reminded to keep investing in myself and the things that light my soul on fire! That's a powerful life if we can keep these things going! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found another lesson from a former student of mine. Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) shared this gem with his introduction: “Why accept Acceptable when you're capable of Exceptional? Acceptable is ‘good enough' for some but never meets the minimum standard for Great. Take small steps daily that combat our natural instinct to be satisfied & tolerate ‘acceptable.” I reposted this from him with my thoughts: “Great stuff @CoachRayO3313 … awesome reminder for life and for anyone open to paying attention.” Today's episode came in my mobile studio because I wanted to get out to you as soon as I could. Early this morning I had a dream and it got my day started in a direction of wanting to learn more, do more, and to keep getting things done. It's all about “Acceptable vs. Exceptional” - “Why tolerate acceptable when you're capable of exceptional? This is something many wrestle with daily. Greatness demands higher standards. Acceptable is good enough for many - but not for the great. Strive to develop the diligence, competitiveness, details, standards, routines, & expectations to become exceptional. Good enough is the enemy of great.” I hope this helps you see some things that you want to work on. Remember, there is not one way of being Exceptional. So many ways to fit it into the areas of life that we want it to be!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Found another simple, yet emotional and meaningful reminder for me from the Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) where this truth was posted: “Every day is another chance to change your life.” Within every day there are many moments too. I've been doing more and more reflecting in the mornings with my coffee. First, I'm reminding myself each morning how much I love mornings. Getting my day started with some prayer time, reading some devotions, other daily readings to not only get me started but also to keep me grounded too. Secondly, it gets my day going in a great direction for the things I want to do and need to do. With me trying to focus a bit more on intentionally focusing on making the most of more moments, it's been eye-opening for me to keep working this way. Also remind ourselves that these “changes” don't have to be huge. They don't have to be posted about on social media. We don't have to share them with others. We just have to put action behind them. Please - remember this thought and remember it's the moments to connect with that matter which make up our days. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found so many powerful posts today and I wanted to share this one with you first. Coming at you a little bit late in the day today, but sometimes “life” gets in the way a bit. So, I'm in the library studio today and getting some stuff done. This comes from Curious Minds (@CuriousMindsHub) where this one hit me right between the eyes and I hope you connect with it too! “It's time to get more aggressive about the life you want.” It is time. Not just because it's late January of a new year, but it's because it's TODAY! Today is the only time I can do something about this because that is the moment I'm in. Truthfully, it would have been really easy to stay at home. The weather is cold and nasty, but I knew I wanted to get back to my “roots” of going someplace outside of the house, getting a coffee and having a quiet space to work in. My local library offers this with their study rooms to sign up for. So many podcasts, school work, video recordings, etc., have been done here. I knew I wanted to take some time to really intentionally focus on getting some things done, investigated, read, watched, etc. So I hope this reminds you to do the same - as soon as you can!! “Send Coach John a message”Love finding things that help keep my soul on fire… these posts that I find are really things that fire me up! From Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_) Its a reminder for all of us to “Trust the process. Always remember that… You can have the worst days of your life and a few weeks later you can have the best day of your life. Keep pushing through.” This is something that hits me hard when I reflect on it - and truthfully I do have a bit more time to reflect now a days. It get me thinking about how proud of my little 8 year old self would be of my 59 year old self. That 8 year old is part of me and has been since I was that age. I do have plenty to be proud of that I have pushed through and not given up. It helps me to also connect with Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) that shared this: “Hardest thing right now is, finding people with pure intentions” Part of our process needs to keep focusing in doing the right thing. Not only for our lives and the people we love, but our communities / country / the world! My little 8 year old self has been in the front row seeing all the good and bad I've done. I need to do more of what is right in living my life. Great stuff for all of us to connect with. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Found a great reminder for me personally that I need to read more and the importance of taking the time to do it! From TeacherGoals (@teachergoals) “Reading counts. - Reading forces you to be quiet in a world that no longer makes a place for that.” That is a quote from John Green. It seems that the world is getting noisier and more hectic as each day passes. As I typed that thought out, I also know that probably many of the previous generations probably thought the same thing. I take time to start my day by reading a little bit. However, that is not where it should end for me. I need to take more time throughout my days to slow down and read more. I have plenty of things to read that are good for me. That inspires me. That makes me want to be better and do better in my life. When I do, I find that I can handle the “loudness” of the world a bit better. Maybe this is something for you to get re-connected with too? I know a good friend of mine really takes the time to pause life here and there to get some reading done. It brings joy to her soul and it helps her be her best for the life that she wants to live. She wrote a very nice note to my wife recently and my wife shared it with me. This helps me to want to do the same! Thanks Heather for sharing that with my wife, who shared it with me. Some conversations stay with us because they name what we've been living but haven't had words for yet. This episode is one of those moments, a reminder that gratitude does not require us to deny our pain, and authenticity does not demand perfection. As we revisit this Thanksgiving message, one of the most downloaded and shared episodes of the year, Lori reflects on what it means to hold multiple truths at the same time. In a year marked by layoffs, uncertainty, grief, and global upheaval, this episode offers permission to be honest and grateful, resilient and tender. This is not a call to toxic positivity. It's an invitation to courageous leadership by showing up fully human, holding space for ourselves and others, and leading with compassion even when life is messy. In this episode, you'll hear about: Why gratitude and grief are not opposites, and why leaders need both How holding “two truths” builds psychological safety and trust The difference between compassion and dismissal during times of loss What authentic leadership looks like in seasons of uncertainty Practical ways to support others facing layoffs, trauma, or transition Guest BioLori Adams-Brown is the host of A World of Difference and a globally minded leadership expert focused on difference, resilience, and authentic leadership. “Send Coach John a message”Today being the day that we are honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., I found a post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) and his #MindsetMonday thoughts shared this quote: “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” What a powerful reminder for every single day, but especially today! I found this catching my eye for many reasons - one for sure is that I need to keep moving forward in my attempt to not let negativity, anger, hatred, etc., enter into my heart and mind. Too much of the BS out there that I unfortunately let into my life and I can't let it go. This morning was no exception. People I know, like and thought I respected, keep putting stuff out there that simply sets to tear apart and cause trouble. I will keep moving forward, however I have to, so that I can keep encouraging others, putting out things that help people on their life's journey, along with trying to balance out the “crud” that people put out there. One of the things that I remind myself of is that the people that put out the “crud”, are really sharing what they are all about, the problems they have in life, the hurt they are going through, etc. It's worth my efforts every day for sure! “Send Coach John a message”Powerful and emotional continuation with honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., today - I found this from The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) where this quote was shared: "I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war." In this episode I shared a snippet of his Nobel Peace Prize speech, where he accepted the award on behalf of the American civil rights movement. Check out this link bit.ly/3bJCQuc #MLKDay that has a bit more info about this time in our history. Again, this is a reminder for me first of all, and anyone else that wants to listen - that we must be better! In all parts of living our lives. We are more alike than we are different. I know I need to keep getting better in all areas of my life. I know I want to have a life worth remembering that stood for doing good, helping others rather than hurting them & causing troubles. We humans are still fighting a battle of letting evil win over goodness. We have not learned the lesson yet and we have always struggled with it - just look throughout history. We have history to learn from. To improve. To fix the wrongs that we humans have created. All of us have a lot to work on, but it's worth it for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I picked this one up from arobmoney (@arobmoney) and I think it's a great message of community celebrating things that bring people together. Sports (and other things) do that magically. Once again, I'm intrigued on how to connect with more of things like this in my life, because those “things” are out there for sure. I want to have them help me pay attention more to things that really matter in life instead of the ugliness that is all around us! Hope this helps you do the same. “Send Coach John a message”Recently there was a news reporter Lynn Jones, who was at the press conference of Coach Liam Coen from the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. He was speaking to the press after losing a close playoff game and the interaction between him and her simply took roughly 24 seconds to pay him a compliment and to encourage him to keep his head up high! It's absolutely stunning and embarrassing the number of people that are complaining about what she said along with the fact that she should not be there in the first place!! Come on people!! We need to be better than this. We all need encouragement like what Ms. Jones shared with the coach. We can all give encouragement to others too, instead of constantly bringing people down and causing trouble! Listen to her compliments HERE. Just like someone mentioned, I may need to replay this a few times when I'm feeling down in life. Thanks for listening.
