It's August, and the overwhelm is rampant among the farmers reaching out for coaching!  This week, I talked with a woman neck deep in overwhelm and exhaustion.  She's in two farmers markets, and farm work is at its peak right now! And she still can't get it all done. I asked, “What's ONE thing that, if you changed it right now, would give you the most relief?” She responded - getting her employees to do the right things in the right way. She said she still ends up doing most of the work because she's faster/better. I hear this often. And the solution may not be what you were expecting.​ She hired and trained her employees, but they're spilling feed, not cleaning up after themselves, and not setting up or tearing down the market booth in the way she taught them. They're not attentive to all the details. She's bummed they're not getting it. You WILL make mistakes when you hire. Today's episode will help lessen those mistakes. I even know some of you are farming oysters and salmon and Air BnB's!   You bust your buns to get these products & services to people in your community.    I know this because I did it, too. I used to wake up thinking - “my product is amazing. People should be flocking to buy - and they aren't.”   And despite your best efforts, often you feel like your market just doesn't want what you have.   They didn't buy enough whole chickens, so you had them cut up.   They didn't buy the Flower and Vegetable Shares…   So you made a YouPick and weekly orders.   They didn't buy the beef shares…   So you created bundles and boxes and still have FREEZERS full of meat.   So the obvious thing to tell yourself is -  that the market is the problem.   But. The first month after I started my farm and brought home my first milk cows, I realized there was no way I could get it all done! By "all," I mean the milking process, working with customers, feeding my family, and driving my daughter to basketball practice and games six days a week. It was physically, humanly impossible for me to run the farm all by myself! I hired my first employees and then began the process of learning by experience what NOT to do and what works best. Or, try to get into stores or restaurants? What's best? There are so many options for selling! And there are pros and cons to all options. Many of my clients - farmers all over the US - have started doing drop sites, and for some of them, this is their only way of selling. They say they love the control over their schedule they have.  They no longer have the hard labor of markets - packing up and schlepping their stuff to the market, only to often turn around and have to bring some of it back home again, unpack and restock. When they use pre-orders and drop sites, as I teach, they know that what they pack up is presold and will NOT be coming home with them. Today I share my step-by-step process and I have the exact steps l use. Just 5 phases!  But there's a massive problem with this -  Most people get stuck looping in the first 3 phases and NEVER get to move on to phases 4 and 5. You can't get to a successful and profitable farm, though, unless you get through all the stages. You'll learn that phase 3 is the HARDEST stage - I don't call it ‘the river of misery' for nothing!
