This week we talk with Hannah Rose Weber and Nate Lada, two of the owners at Green Things Farm Collective in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Green Things is a majority women-owned farm business that has evolved out of several businesses. Nate and his wife Jill first started Green Things farm in 2011 at a local farm incubator program. Then they purchased 64 acres where the farm is now settled. In 2020, Green Things joined with Ann Arbor Seed Company and the Land Loom to expand production, share management of running a diverse farm business and develop a model of sustainable, cooperative, and responsible farming. They offer seasonal vegetables and flowers to their local markets through various channels as well as beef. Hannah takes the lead on market, sales and personnel development. Nate leads vegetable production, infrastructure and production systems innovation. They are joined by a crew of dedicated farmers, including Jill Lada and Michelle Brosius who are also co-owners. Often on this podcast, we like to discuss people's personal farming journeys as much as the business side of the discussion, but in this case, it feels like the Green Things Farm Collective almost has a soul and spirit of its own that far transcends what the individual owners and farmers bring to it. So, we get the chance to hear more about the farm itself, how it has evolved, how the people involved are working to meet their goals of sustainability and more! Connect With Guest:Facebook: Green Things Farm CollectiveWebsite: www.greenthingsfarm.comInstagram: @greenthingsfarmcollective Podcast Sponsors:Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: Johnny's Selected Seeds - Johnny's Selected Seeds has provided superior seeds, tools, information, and service since 1973. We discuss the principles of good flow in a wash/pack situation and how to optimize cold storage in post-harvest handling. The guests emphasize the significance of creating a comfortable and efficient work environment by considering factors such as walking paths, space, lighting, and ventilation. They provide practical tips to improve work flow, such as identifying bottlenecks and rearranging workstations or introducing hanging shelving. The episode also delves into the five-step cleaning and sanitizing process for wash pack areas, with the addition of a crucial fifth step: drying surfaces after sanitization. The concept of dry-cleaning (not like laundry) is discussed as an alternative to wet-cleaning surfaces, with brushes, brooms, vacuums, or compressed air for debris removal. The importance of cold storage in maintaining produce quality is highlighted, with recommendations for small CoolBot rooms and considerations for larger spaces. Stephanie's goal is always to provide the best, most professional and loving care and has created an amazing team of pet care professionals that go above and beyond for every pet every time!  Happy Trail's Team culture is heavy on Happiness…as happy team happy pets!! My life is forever changed from this conversation about the birds and the bees with hobby farmer Nicole Gennetta from Colorado. In today’s chat, we’re covering all the details… exactly what is a hobby farm? What do you need to know about how to start a hobby farm before diving in? What is it like to raise chickens in your backyard? Why bees die after stinging you -- yea, you don’t want to miss that grossness! And the cringe-worthy details about buying eggs at a grocery store vs. a farm that raises chickens for eggs. Nicole takes us from her curiosity about farming as a child to the transition from being a medic to running a farm filled with chickens, quail, ducks, turkeys, honey bees, and more. About halfway through this interview, I started craving cheese boards with honey and sous vide soft boiled eggs. So apologies in advance if you can hear me drooling through the audio. I am amazed at how complex this chat with Nicole was and how much I’m taking away from it. There were some seriously interesting factoids on raising bees and backyard chickens for eggs. I can guarantee things we discussed will be popping up in many conversations to come whenever a bee, chicken, or egg is brought up.   HIGHLIGHTS:  The (misplaced) fear of bees. From firefighter to beekeeper: Nicole’s career transition How to get started on Beekeeping and Backyard Chickens. The inner workings of a bee colony. The relationship between the bee and the beekeeper. How to support the bees! (Hint: it’s not by beekeeping) The difference between backyard chicken eggs and store-bought eggs. Food safety and chicken eggs.    QUOTABLES: “People are starting to realize that food actually comes from animals, plants, and farmers and doesn't show up at a grocery store. So that kind of farm-to-table realization of where food comes from and people wanting to empower themselves to have that food security is really great.” - Nicole Genetta    “It's so neat that people are returning to these really fulfilling hobbies, now that they have the time to do it. And they're not just thinking about commuting to work each day.” - Jenna Passaro   HUNGRY FOR MORE?  MY WEIRD FOOD OBSESSION SHOW NOTES: https://myweirdfoodobsession.com/  MY WEIRD FOOD OBSESSION INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/myweirdfoodobsession/ JENNA’S FOOD BLOG - SIP BITE GO: https://sipbitego.com/ SIP BITE GO INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/sipbitego/ SOUS VIDE SOFT BOILED EGGS: https://sipbitego.com/sous-vide-soft-boiled-eggs/ SOUS VIDE SOFT BOILED EGGS VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0BvhCQc32I

Many of you know that almost two years ago, we packed up a 26 ft. Uhaul and moved to the country. We didn't grow up this way, and many may wonder how on earth we ended up here? Why did we trade in the sidewalks of suburbia for woods and a stream? Why did we choose to spend evenings chasing chickens instead of life in a neighborhood? There are many reasons why we chose this life, but mainly because God gave us the desires of our hearts. We are now loving life out here, growing food along with a ministry, raising chicken, ducks, and guineas, and the serenity that comes from our little slice of hobby farm heaven.
