This is episode 49 and in today's podcast I'll be reading a review on an exhibition I curated called  LIT: Light in Transmission which was shown in Hodge Gallery at the Pittsburgh Glass Center last year in 2021 from February 5 and extended until July 28. This is the second exhibition I've curated the first being in 2017 an ISU Alumni exhibition from Glass Progam, and so I find this to be valuable to have documented thoughts and interpretations of what I've helped create. In today's podcast, recorded June 22, 2020, I'll be joined by David Svenson David Svenson was born in 1953 in Upland, California. He graduated from Pitzer College in 1980, and has been incorporating neon in his work since the mid 80s. Often using glass and neon as his dominant medium, his works are known to express the subtle glow of colored light in combination with carved wood or other sculptural materials. Growing up in the rural citrus country of Southern California,  just miles away from classic examples of State Route 66 neon signage, he was left with an early impression of multi-colored light easily seen in the darkness of the night. This childhood  juxtaposition, combined with witnessing breathtaking displays of the Aurora Borealis in mid teens where he studied Alaskan Tlingit art and culture, set David on the path of light. Learning, teaching, sharing skills and knowledge about glass, neon, art and the Pacific rim cultures are important aspects of David's life today. Aside from working in his studio, David teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and has taught classes at the Pilchuck Glass School, WA, Corning Museum of Glass,, Urban Glass, NY, and has given workshops internationally. He has served as Board President of MONA (The Museum of Neon Art) and works periodically with a team of Alaska Native totem carvers on large commissions.

She graduated with a bachelor's in photography in 2014 at the University of Southampton in England and started her career as a photography assistant before moving to Sweden.  After a creative block post-university, Marta found that local neon signs had become her subject of curiosity. And what began as a hobby has now turned into an almost obsessive passion. Since 2018 she has made short documentaries called In the Form of Neon, about the artists who create neon signs.  I'm always curious about the different avenues that bring people to illuminated works of neon and plasma, and so I appreciate the work that Marta does to bring them to light. With the visual medium of neon and plasma, video is a very strong middle way to an in person experience. It was a pleasure to meet you back in  2019  at the Glass Factory in Boda, Sweden. I would say Frustrating and Fun are the best way to describe working with glass, especially such skillful processes like neon bending. While I fell in love with plasma first, I'm starting to find a very strong interest in neon thanks to Nikki Lau nudge for Neon in her proposal and the well-appreciated guidance and teaching of Tim Tackacs.  Speaking of Tim, you can learn about him is his journey in neon on the podcast in episode 28: American Classic Neons with Tim Takacs. We talk about what Glass Focus was, and hear about the founder and Glass Collector, Beverly Copeland. "American artist Paul Seide has developed a unique type of glass sculpture which utilizes scientific and electronic technology along with a highly developed artistic sense. His famous neon sculptures are activated by transmitted radio signals, which eliminates the need for messy and cumbersome electrodes. This allows him more freedom to investigate a greater range of illuminated shapes. Seide developed this technology after many years of experimentation. With his pioneering work in the field of neon he follows in the footsteps of his father, Charles, a pioneer in the development of acrylic paint. On today's podcast  we have Michael Flechtner!  As a child Michael Flechtner was fascinated with electricity, fire and colored light of all kinds.  It could be the stained glass windows at church, his father testing the Christmas lights on Christmas Eve and the neon signage in his home town…adorning shop windows and local drive-ins and movie theatres.   With Flechtner's background in sculpture(BFA, MFA) , as he began to learn how to bend neon tubes, it became clear to him through literally some “wrong turns” that he would be able to create 3 dimensional neon forms in what is primarily  considered a 2 dimensional medium. He believes he has a “gift” that enables him to be able to visualize the finished work and then to create patterns, jigs, techniques and other devices in order to create these very “in the round” neon artworks.   Michael would say “I knew that it was very important to develop sound bending skills and techniques so that my work would survive, handling, bombarding, and finally assembly and installation.” And thus over the years, he's created a number of forms in various sizes that include sea life, aircrafts, radios, cameras, etc.  The smallest 3D plane he's made has a 6 inch wingspan and the largest 3D shark 7 long long. Flechtner says “It is surprising to me…as well as others how strong these fragile constructions really are”. Note for context this episode was recorded in early June of 2020, it seems so far away, with all that's happened in between. Strattman’s work encompasses over 30 years of innovation in lighted glass plasma technology, as an artist, designer, researcher, teacher, advocate and author. Wayne has invented unique lighting technologies such as Luminglas- an interactive flat panel plasma light that Star Trek fans will recognize as the charging station for the Borg. While working on creating a plasma TV, he came up with a process of fusing window glass together in a kiln to make  flat glass that lit up and was kinetic. In today's podcast, I have Rusty Russo, who has been working and developing his skills in the area of Illuminated Glass Tubing for over 30 years in which he’s acquired an expert level proficiency in glass fabrication, vacuum tube processing, system design, and construction, leak detection, technical support, packaging design, and technical writing. He’s also a Senior R+D Glass Blower for a Boston-based start-up specializing in energy-efficient inductively coupled soda-lime light bulbs.   From his beginning as a neon bender, he’s worked as a technical consultant for The EGL Co., a columnist for Signs of the Times Magazine, demonstrating artist and technical assistant for The Glass Art Society, and assistant instructor/visiting artist for various education facilities such as the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Penland School of Craft and Urban Glass. Additionally A recognized industry authority on all phases of neon vacuum tube production. Having served as Co-Chairman of the ISA Research and Standards Committee on Neon Processing, where he co-created an internationally recognized standard for the processing of neon tubing. This provided a practical, teachable, repeatable solution to what had been a historically random intuitive process. He currently works as a freelance technical consultant, and glass artist, conceptualizing and creating 3-dimensional sculpture using glass, light, and mixed media.  I met Mr. Russo in the summer of  2018 during the Pittsburgh Glass Center’s first Plasma Workshop taught by Wayne Strattman and Mundy Hepburn where he assisted alongside Ander Mikkelsen. In the chaos of that class, Rusty was a grounding tether to the complexities of plasma and neon, someone who was very comfortable with meeting you at your level. He’s been such a great source of information and support in regards to troubleshooting and identifying components in the manifold, and helped provided confidence and guidance in my career development in technical consultation on several jobs. Like many of the guests on this podcast, Rusty has a rich history and knowledge, and we barely scratch the surface of who Rusty is. Treat this as it is, an introduction, he’ll talk about the origins of his interest in neon, the influence of music and martial art on his practice and teaching philosophy, and his drive toward excellence through repetition, self-examination, and refinement. Hello Lightning Tamers! This episode number 34! In today's podcast, we have a recording from 2019 during the plasma with blown glass workshop taught at the Glass Factory in Boda, Sweden. I was invited to teach alongside Ed Kirshner and Jamie Guerrero, which was only made possible by the 2019 Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh Grant. I wasn’t sure if I was going to release this episode, but seeing that we are halfway through the collaboration with Geex for the Intro to Plasma series, today's guest would be an opportunity to emphasize the need to have a growing respect and understanding of components, knowledge, and skills introduced in chapter 2, besides showing another perspective on learning plasma from an engineering and technical background. Now the person I’m introducing is Tristen August, he works for Konstrucktiv in Berlin. Konstrucktiv is a product manufacturing and rapid prototyping solution, with Tristan as their expert in creative solutions, electronics, manufacturing, and hardware hacks. Perhaps he and Dalibor Farny are kindred spirits. Among the participants in the workshop, Tristen was the most familiar with plasma, yet did not have any glassblowing experience. This wasn’t a problem since he was able to pick up on glassblowing jargon, and worked with other participants to have vessels made, much like Ed himself. With his technical understanding, he brought him a plasma transformer he designed and a few experiments he made with glass tubing. Now it took a little more time than previous permission but Taming Lightning has been granted permission to read the following article from the Chemistry World Magazine by the Royal Society of Chemistry.  

Hello, Lightning Tamers this is episode number 29. In today's podcast, we have Dalibor Farny! For those who don't know he's a small manufacturer of the world's largest nixie tube & Clocks in the Czech Republic. The reason I wanted to have him on the podcast is for several reasons, one which I believe has parallelled the struggles of those pursuing the seeming untamable nature of plasma or anyone in pursuit of self-learning is that his engineer background was all he had before becoming enamored by nixie tubes. not unlike myself, he pursued as much info as he could be it text or what little existed on the internet before needing the help of those willing to share their knowledge. He searched, gathered, and learned about the equipment needed, taught himself how to work glass and used lathe, and to process, clean, and use a vacuum system.  He's very open with sharing his process, his success, his failures, Questions, and solutions. In today’s podcast we have Tommy Gustafsschiöld of Nordic Neon and Diod. He’s one of the last remaining Neon Shops in all of  Scandinavia. We’ll hear about his beginnings and earlier life prior to neon, as well his recent explorations in making art whether it be a collaboration or his own. What I also find interesting is how he processes or bombards his neon tubes using a kiln or oven rather than a high power transformer,  in addition, coating his own tubes. By the time this podcast is released, I will have traveled to Sweden as part of the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh Grant, where I had the opportunity to visit and travel with Tommy to The Glass Factory Boda. Here I assisted and taught a hot shop and plasma class with Ed Kirshner and Jaime Guerrero, where took what we learned from our class taught in Pittsburgh last year, essentially Blow and Glow 2.0. I also participated in the conversation for setting up neon and plasma for the Glass Art Society Conference in May 2020, where I will be one of the presenters.

I was fortunate to meet and talk with Steve at the Glas plasma parley, as I’ve heard many good things about him. Often assisting with neon setup at Canberra Glassworks, teaching, and promoting Neon and Plasma.  

Today’s podcast will be a bit different, it’ll feature some of the participants in the Plasma Parley get together host by Neon and Art Studio Glas work in Raleigh by Nate Sheaffer and his crew Zach Willis and Danielle James, along with Bruce Suba on the lead and lathe demos by Mike G of Merge Scientific. This took place over the 4th of July weekend, and I could not think of any other way to celebrate than creating our own firework and sharing that experience among new and old friends. In order of today’s episode, we’ll feature Nate Shaeffer, Adam Smo, Justin Parr, Harold Lasswell, Aaron Ristau, David Nickles, and Zach Willis. With a BA in Fine Art from Alfred University and an MFA from The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, Tecosky teaches at studios and schools in Brooklyn, nationally and internationally. Leo lives and works in Brooklyn, NY blowing glass and maintaining a studio practice. Tecosky creates sculpture and installation using found and constructed elements.  He has a diverse range of glassmaking technique be it sharp and precise hot-sculpted arrows, crisp and clean collage of screen printed Islamic and architectural patterns, and light bending graffiti with neon. I was fortunate to record this episode with him at the end of teaching a summer Intensive at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. We had touch base on instagram prior to meeting, and I’ve been itching to seed the potential for exploration with plasma in his hot sculpted shapes. Recorded shortly after Ed Blow and Glow class we discuss what techniques we would employ to make his shape work for plasma. ​

He’s been working on in Plasma for roughly over 20+ years.   Inspired the natural occurance of plasma, such as the aurora borealis, he’d creates air tight vessels using a glass solder technique with ready-made and productions glass object, or fabricated and collaborations with Skilled glassblowers at both the Torch and Furnace. Notably Bernd Weinmayer, Jaime Guerrero, and Mitch LaPlante in which the interplay of geometry of glass shape and volume are a big player in discovering various patterns and displays.   We’ll talk about Kirshner’s background pre-glass, where he’s studied architecture and sculpture at Cornell University, the University of California, Berkely, and the Oskar Kokoschka School in Austria. Having work represented in the US and internationally we’ll talk about his current work and projects,  Teaching and the Blow and Glow Class at Pittsburgh Glass Center, and his thoughts on the future of Plasma and the Plasma Art Alliance.
