Welcome to episode #967 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Roland Allen is a publisher and author based in the UK, with a background in book and notebook publishing. He studied at Manchester University and has written on diverse subjects, including bicycles and bread. Roland has maintained a personal diary for decades and has a particular fondness for stationery. In this conversation, we delved into his latest book, The Notebook - A History of Thinking on Paper, which explores the profound impact of notebooks on creativity and thought processes throughout history (and, wow, I do love notebooks and I loved this book!). Roland shares his insights into how the tactile act of writing engages our senses uniquely, fostering clarity and connection in an increasingly digital world. We discuss the psychological benefits of journaling, the resurgence of interest in handwriting, and how notebooks continue to inspire productivity and joy. His reflections on the utilitarian origins of notebooks and the personal relationships individuals have with their stationery offers a fresh perspective on the value of putting pen to paper. If you've ever appreciated the feel of a fresh notebook or the act of writing by hand (or if you can't walk by a stationary store and not go in... like me), this episode provides a deeper understanding of an often-overlooked tool that has shaped human thought for centuries, and may hold the answer to how you can improve your skills and knowledge in 2025. But according to existential psychologist Clay Routledge, supernatural thinking is actually an important part of being a complete human being. From a scientific point of view, all we know is what we have in this life- but if we're open to supernatural possibilities that allows us to at least explore or have hope that there's something about our existence, something about the human spirit, that transcends the material. When we are dealing with anxieties about mortality, questions about purpose, and trying to understand our place in a large Universe, our minds naturally drift towards at least curiosities about the supernatural if not outright belief. --------------------------------------------- About Clay Routledge: Dr. Clay Routledge is a leading expert in existential psychology. The first case features four significant books from the 16th to 18th centuries: - A 1600 edition of Heinrich Kramer's Malleus Maleficarum. - A 1586 edition of Johann Weyer's De Praestigiis Daemonum. - A 1729 edition of The Secrets of the Invisible World Disclos'd by Andrew Morton (Daniel Defoe). - A 1796 edition of Robert Calef's More Wonders of the Invisible World. These books provide unique perspectives on early modern beliefs about witchcraft, from the notorious Malleus Maleficarum to the critical De Praestigiis Daemonum. The second case explores witchcraft in popular culture with: - An 1868 edition of the grimoire Les Secrets Merveilleux De La Magie Naturelle Du Petit Albert. - A 1919 booklet, “Your Fortune in a Tea Cup,” by Dr. V.M Pierce. - A signed first edition of Gregory Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. - A signed first edition of J.K. RHODE ISLAND, 2003: On Christmas morning in 2003, a security guard on the Johnson & Wales Harborside campus in Providence, Rhode Island discovered the body of a young man leaning up against a chain link fence. Fingerprints would later identify the man as 22-year old Roy Weber. Roy was part of a population of men who engaged in street-based sex work in Providence, many of them exchanging sexual acts for money to support their substance use. Almost 20 years later, Roy's homicide is still unsolved. Police have photos of a man they've said could have information about what happened to Roy, and yet no arrests have been made to this day.Richard Holcomb knew Roy Weber, their lives intertwined by their mutual lifestyle at the time. He's now in recovery, and Rich has spent much of his adult life advocating and raising awareness for street-based sex work and helping researchers, health care professionals, and the general public better understand the realities of that life, one that he fell into at a young age. This is the case of Roy Weber, but it's also the story of Richard Holcomb and how he sought recovery and helped reclaim Roy Weber's legacy by helping other men like him.
