We're back with 12v industry icon, John Schwartz. If you missed the story about how he rose through the ranks, check out the previous episode. Today, John is sharing his secrets for staying on top through all of the ups and downs that business can throw at you. One such hurdle was the Covid shutdowns that rocked so many businesses. When the pandemic was still isolated to China, John had the good foresight to order one of the last containers of product before everything shut down everywhere. Because of this, John was one of the only manufacturers that had a full warehouse, and he gained a lot of new customers. Beyond that, John found himself hand-making face shields. While most of them he gave away, it still got John's name out there and cemented his reputation as a businessman with a heart. Your reputation can carry a lot of weight, and John strives to have one of someone that cares about his employees and his community. After 24 years with Perfectionist, John estimates they've done over $45million in lifetime revenue. With all of his own needs met, John's goal now is to make sure his employees are set up well also. He's a firm believer that you never want to sit at the table by yourself, because it's a lot more fun when all your friends are there with you. It's the same reason John will correct anyone that says they're self-made, because no one makes it to the top by themselves. It always takes a team in some form or another. That same gratitude should extend to your customers as well. If someone takes the time to leave you a good review, reach out and thank them. If you have passion, and continue to invest in and educate yourself, you'll reap the rewards. For John's first few years in business, every week he would ask himself what he struggled with that week, and then he would buy a book on it. Hundreds of books later, John's investment in himself paid off big. He prides himself on knowing how to do every job in the shop, down to currently learning how to use the tire change machine. Too often owner's will sit up on their high horse feeling like the big man. But, John says you never want to be the biggest person in your circle, you want to be the smallest. Otherwise, who do you have to challenge you and keep you growing? If you have to constantly remind people that you're the boss, then chances are you're not a very good one. Your leadership should speak for itself. What You'll Learn: How, through innovation, John's business survived the pandemic. How many hours you have to put in to be considered a master of your craft. How many different hats a 12v installer has to be able to wear. And much more! With 33 years in the car audio and security industry, John Schwartz is an icon in the 12v world. His love for the industry started at 14 years old when he was working next door to a car audio shop. He can still remember the day a guy pulled up in his CRX and turned on the bass. With every window in the place shaking, John was intrigued. He immediately went into the shop and begged for a job. He started off just sweeping floors and cleaning bathrooms, but soon got to help with installs and learned the trade. At 16, John's family moved to Alaska, and John became the stereo guy at school. People started calling John the ‘Sound Doctor' and so he decided to get his first business license under that name. At 18, John got hired at Safe & Sound, but continued to do installs on the side. Eventually he went full time and rose through the ranks. With tons of other shops hitting John up to run theirs, John's boss wouldn't let him quit until he considered it a worthy job. That finally happened when the owner of CompuStar Auto Security asked for John's help in beating out Viper. As head tech, John was helping to develop new products. However, his boss also owned Perfectionist Audio, and wanted John's help to figure out why the business wasn't succeeding. John was sent to Perfectionist to be a spy but eventually fired the whole team and started over as the shop manager. When CompuStar moved to Seattle, John was asked to come along, but when he heard that would be the end of Perfectionist, he asked to stay. John's goals with the company included winning retailer of the year and buying the business from his boss, all before his 35th birthday. The first few years were rough, but in 2006 he built a new building and started pushing hard for that million dollar goal. John brought the company through the economic collapse of 2009, and by 2010 was up for retailer of the year. A few hours before the awards, John's boss told him he was thinking of selling the business. Thirty minutes later, the two had worked out a deal for John to be the buyer. Later that evening, Perfectionist would win retailer of the year. Both of John's goals were realized three weeks before his 35th birthday. Continuing to also work for CompuStar, John pitched the Australian market in 2015. CompuStar was so busy though, they told John he could be in charge of the Australian market. Next thing John knew, he had picked up 100 stores and was expanding into New Zealand and S. Africa. At the same time, John was developing a new sound deadening product, SoundSkins. Now, as an international distributor, retailer, manufacturer, and wholesaler, John was on top of the world. The cherry on top was winning retailer of the year for the second time. To celebrate, John's partner bought him the first 100 tubes of SoundSkins. John decided to send one to each big installer to get their name out there. John's plan was working, but his business partner got impatient and things started to get shady. This caused John to walk away from SoundSkins. A couple years down the road though, John would start another sound deadening manufacturing company on his own, called SoundShield. What You'll Learn: How Perfectionist Audio broke their first million. What the blue ocean theory is. Why John walked away from SoundSkins. What the value equation is and how it works. It goes without saying that moving sucks. We're saying it anyway because while it goes without saying, it also bears repeating. Somehow. Regardless, one way to make moving slightly less awful is to have someone do it for you. No, not your immediate family. Would you trust them not to break stuff? Put your trust in AAA Movers. They used to move pianos, so they can move pretty much anything. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Need to move? That sucks. It's cold as hell outside. Still, sometimes it has to be done. That's when you call AAA Movers. Odds are you've seen their logo, given they have 53 trucks with it on them. And as a bonus, John grew up in North Minneapolis, so he's met all the insane wrestlers Tom knew. That doesn't really affect the business, it's just that people like wrestlers. Hello! And welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom. Today’s guest is… Jamil Smith, senior writer at Rolling Stone where he covers national affairs and culture. Jamil is one of the most prominent voices in America on race and politics, so I picked his brain on voter suppression and remembering the life of congressman Elijah Cummings, who sadly passed away last month. Both issues have shaped politics as we know it, so we got into the weeds of how to fix voting discrimination, as well as what legacy Cummings will leave behind. Below is a post-game of everything we discussed. Enjoy 💪Please Like Me, ThanksBefore you read on, please like this edition of Inside The Newsroom by clicking the ❤️ below the title. That way I’ll appear in clever algorithms and more people will be able to read.Elijah Cummings Wasn’t DoneThe news of Elijah Cummings’ passing last month sent shockwaves through the political world. On both sides of the aisle, Democrats and Republicans attended Cummings’ funeral, which lasted for four and half hours due to the volume of people lining up to give eulogies. My favorite was from Barack Obama…No matter how much Cummings achieved in his 23 years in congress — Cummings was sworn in in 1996 after winning a special election of Maryland’s 7th District — it still feels that his death, at 68 years of age, was premature. Whether it was standing up for police brutality in the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death in his native Baltimore, or his role in the impeachment of Donald Trump, Cummings was as good as they come. And he wasn’t done. As his widow Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, and Maryland Democratic Party chairwoman, said in her statement above, Elijah was working “until his last breath”, signing two subpoenas on his deathbed, both relating to the Trump administration’s policy change to temporarily end the ability for severely ill immigrants to seek care in the United States. Congressman Elijah Cummings left behind a gargantuan legacy that will take multiple people to replicate.Jamil Smith, Rolling StoneRacism Kills, LiterallyIt’s currently unknown what led to Cummings’ death, except “complications concerning longstanding health challenges," according to his office. What we do know is that Cummings faced the brutality of racism all his life, having first being attacked by a white mob for integrating a swimming pool in Baltimore when he was just 11 years old. We also know that racism causes real health problems. According to a recent study, racism promotes genes that trigger inflammation, one of the major drivers of disease. This is just one reason why black Americans have a life expectancy at birth of 75.6 years, while white Americans are expected to live to 79.April Thomas, University of Southern CaliforniaA Real-Life PurgeOne of congressman Cummings’ biggest fights was against voter suppression, spearheading the House Oversight Committee and becoming a leading voice within the Democratic Party on several civil rights issues. Continuing that fight is Stacey Abrams, a relatively new face to the wider public who’s tipped to be a powerful voice within the Democratic Party for years to come. Abrams shot to fame after she lost by just 0.4 per cent, or less than 60,000 votes, to Republican Brian Kemp in Georgia’s race for governor in the 2018 midterms. The race was riddled with so many allegations that the House Oversight Committee, led by Cummings, launched an investigation into what really happened. While the investigation is still ongoing, it was revealed recently that top Republicans in Georgia are continuing to use their power to suppress minority voters. In what is being ripped out of Kemp’s playbook, top officials in the state are investigating and issuing subpoenas to political opponents, without publicly showing evidence there was wrongdoing by those parties. That’s where Abrams comes in. Instead of following top Democrats’ calls to run for president, Abrams launched a new national voting rights campaign, Fair Fight 2020, which aims to educate and protect voters of their rights. In some ways, Republicans understand black voters better than Democrats. While voter suppression laws aren’t as overt as they once were, individual red states now use more insidious methods carefully planned to make it harder to register and to cast a vote. In Georgia, some counties were left with just a single polling station, and it’s thought that almost 16 million Americans overall were removed from electoral register between 2014 and 2016.Oliver Laughland, The GuardianWhich States Are Most Restrictive To Vote?I was surprised to see that Virginia, a state Hillary Clinton won by more than five points, was among the most restrictive states in the country, but that can be explained by the majorities held by the Republicans in both the state House and Senate. Thanks to the fine folks at the Guardian US, you can find out how restrictive each state is.Shelby County vs HolderIn 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in a 5-4 decision to strip away key protections of the Voting Rights Act, a staple in the country’s democracy since 1965. In the judgement, the SCOTUS ruled that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act — the section that determines which states can change their voting laws without approval — was unconstitutional. Chief Justice John G. Roberts delivered the court’s opinion stating that “the Voting Rights Act of 1965 employed extraordinary measures to address an extraordinary problem,” suggesting that there’s now less need for voter protection. The neutering of the Voting Rights Act has paved the way for more than half of the nation’s states to tighten their voter-ID laws, including most recently Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Tennessee and Texas. John Schwartz, New York TimesTrump Visits Atlanta To Woo Black VotersDonald Trump visited Atlanta last week to launch his campaign Black Voices For Trump, and unsurprisingly, it quickly turned into a circus. Sadly I’ve run out of words to describe the hypocrisy of the president when it comes to trying to attract minority voters, so I’ll let you watch for yourself…Related Podcasts#55 — Lindsay Gibb(Power Plays newsletter) on the overt sexism in college and professional sports#51 — Jason Kander (Democratic Party) on why veterans have been left behind#47 — Ryan Grim (The Intercept, The Young Turks) on the history of progressivism within the Democratic PartyJob CornerEach week I’ll feature a selection of new journalism jobs. Ferdinand Demara earned his reputation as the Great Impostor: For over 22 years he criss-crossed the country, posing as everything from an auditor to a zoologist and stealing a succession of identities to fool his employers. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review Demara's motivation, morality, and techniques -- and the charismatic spell he seemed to cast over others. We'll also make Big Ben strike 13 and puzzle over a movie watcher's cat. Intro: In 1825, Thomas Steele proposed enclosing Isaac Newton's residence in a pyramid surmounted by a stone globe. In 1923 Arthur Guiterman found a rhyme for wasp. Sources for our feature on Ferdinand Demara: Robert Crichton, The Great Impostor, 1959. Robert Crichton, The Rascal and the Road, 1961. Frank E. This week on the podcast is John Schwartz, a science writer for The New York Times, focusing on climate change; he provides us with a look into the editorial and journalistic process of covering climate change, which is the story of our lifetime. The New York Times, as have many other institutions made deliberate decisions around this coverage, which include tossing out the idea that there are two sides to this story, and the pressing need to include multimedia and creative visuals to attract new audiences.
