The Ultra Running Guys podcast is an exceptional show that delves into the world of ultra running. With a wide range of guests and perspectives, this podcast provides an in-depth look into the lives of these impressive athletes. From training techniques to nutrition strategies, listeners gain valuable insights into what it takes to excel in the ultra running world. Through my time listening to this podcast, I have come to appreciate the diversity and complexity of ultra running, as well as the dedication and discipline required to succeed.
One of the best aspects of The Ultra Running Guys podcast is its diverse range of guests. The hosts do a phenomenal job of bringing on athletes from various backgrounds and with differing perspectives. This allows listeners to learn from multiple viewpoints, gaining a better understanding of the sport as a whole. Whether it's interviews with elite ultra runners or conversations with recreational athletes pushing their limits, there is always something new and fascinating to discover.
Furthermore, the topics covered in this podcast are incredibly interesting. Not only does it explore the physical aspects of ultra running such as training plans and race strategies, but it also delves into the mental side of the sport. Listeners are treated to discussions about mindset, resilience, and overcoming challenges, providing valuable lessons applicable not just to running but also to life in general. The hosts' ability to bring out these deeper insights adds another layer of depth to The Ultra Running Guys podcast.
While this podcast has numerous strengths, one potential downside is that some episodes may not be as relatable for those who are not already familiar with ultra running. At times, technical terminology or specific race references might alienate listeners who are new to the sport or seeking a more general introduction. However, for individuals deeply interested in ultra running or those actively involved in the sport themselves, this aspect may not be seen as negative but rather as an opportunity for in-depth exploration.
In conclusion, The Ultra Running Guys podcast is an excellent resource for anyone interested in ultra running. Through engaging interviews with a diverse range of guests, listeners gain valuable insights into the world of ultra running. The variety of topics covered and the depth of discussions make this podcast both educational and entertaining. While it may not be as accessible to those new to the sport, for enthusiasts or aspiring ultra runners, this podcast is a must-listen. The Ultra Running Guys deserve praise for their exceptional work in providing an inside look into this challenging and captivating world.
Owen Thornton ran his first marathon at 15. And then his first 50 Miler at 16. And at 17? He took 1st place in his first 100 mile finish at the Vagabond Endurance Unico 100 last December. Epic.
This episode is about you, the listener, and the rest of the Ultra Running Guys family. And the gratitude that we have for all you have given us, and for allowing us to join forces with you on this epic journey. Because of you, we have learned so much, met people and built friendships that we never would have otherwise, and somehow managed to eclipse 206,000 downloads over the life of the show. And for a couple of guys who were blown away when we hit 50 downloads, trying to figure out who in the world besides our wives and moms would actually take the time to listen, it feels like quite the accomplishment. But again, the credit is yours. And for that, we can't say THANK YOU enough. And so, for our final show, we are going back to where it all started, bringing back the man who was the catalyst for our first Podcast, and has since become a lifelong friend. Join Steve Epifano as he helps us walk down memory lane and hopefully gracefully close out the Final episode of The Ultra Running Guys Podcast. We appreciate you and remember, when in doubt, Just Show Up.
Randi Zuckerberg is our last guest before releasing our farewell episode, and holy crap was she epic! After a 20 year hiatus, Randi returned to running in early 2023, jumped into her first 50 mile ultra in November of 2023 and now, less than a year later, has added two, 200 mile races to her calendar with the Cocodona 250 in May of 2025 and the Bigfoot 200 just 3 months later in August of 2025. She has already amassed an impressive resume with finishes in the Sean Obrien 50K, The NYC Trail Mix 50 Miler, Loopy Looper 24 hour, and recently completed the Zion 100 Mile Challenge. And that doesn't count the marathons and other events she has sprinkled in along the way. The episode goes live at 5:00 AM EST on 9/28 so take us on your long run to hear how Randi has progressed so quickly, what she is doing to prepare for her upcoming challenges, and why she believes that running is for everyone. Enjoy!
Lisa McFadden is an amazingly accomplished runner with over 100 ultras completed, including twenty 100 milers. She is also one of only a handful of people on the planet to complete the Triple Crown of the Last Annual Tennessee Journey runs, put on by that evil genius and previous guest Lazarus Lake, which is comprised of the Vol State (314 miles which she has completed twice), The Last annual Heart of the South (340 miles), and culminating in The Last Annual Third Circle of Hell race which was an astonishing 371 miles. And if that wasn't enough, she took on the 2024 Barkley Marathons with 3 weeks notice for entry and then toed the line at Western States where she missed the official time cutoff at a heartbreaking 98 miles into the race, but still continued on to finish the legendary course. Take us on your long run to hear our incredible conversation with Lisa and soak in all the value that she provides. Enjoy the episode!
We officially met Chris Sherwood at the recent Loopy Looper where he finished the grueling 100 mile event, overcoming the relentless heat and humidity to cross the finish line in 27:42 minutes. And while he ran in college at Georgia Southern University where he logged a 28:30 8K (that is a 5:44 per mile pace for just under 5 miles for anyone who can't convert that quick), life happened and he took a long break from running until 2018, at which time he made the wise decision to jump straight into a 50K, despite never having run or raced more than 13 miles. But he apparently learns quick, and in 2022 he toed the line at Western States, having earned an unlikely entry from a single ticket following his finish at Canal Corridor 100 in late 2021. But forget those short races, because he is currently gearing up to make the jump to the world of 200s with the Cocodona 250 in May of 2025. So take us on your long run to hear how he got our attention, why he runs with a picture of some very special people on his back, and what his training looks like as he faces down Cocodona. Enjoy!
Chris Rice got his start as an adventure racer and has since racked up more than 90 events on UltraSignup. We were lucky enough to shake hands with him recently at the Loopy Looper 100 miler where we witnessed his sub 24 hour finish , teaming up with prior guest Michael "Gagz" Gagliardi to tough out the last 3 hours of the race. And to hint at the grit this guy has, the Loopy Looper was just 10 days after his 4th Badwater 135 finish. He is now preparing for the 153 mile Spartathlon on September 28, and then The Arizona Monster 300 in April 0f 2025. So plug in to hear what makes him tick and how he is approaching a 300+ mile challenge. Checkout more from The Ultra Running Guys: Website: www.theultrarunningguys.com Race: The Final Countdown
After over a year of race spotlights, we must confess. This is the first race spotlight for a race in Iowa. And, we are so grateful that this one was recommended to us as it was flying under the radar, but no more. The Mines of Spain 100 takes place in Dubuque, Iowa in October and sells out each year, so if you want to run this one, you may have to wait until next year. But put it on your watch list so you can be alerted to register in time next year. The Mines of Spain 100 takes runners on 5 - 20 mile loops covering trails that range from steep & technical to flat dirt single track to rolling & grassy and everything in between. Each 20 mile loop of the course is about 2800 feet of gain/loss which totals out to roughly 14,000 feet for the full 100 and runners have 33 hours to complete the distance. Joining us on the show to talk about the Mines of Spain, is RD, Josh Sun. John Maynard appears to be the perfect combination of ultra experience and positive mindset. On the running side, he figured out pretty early on that he was built for endurance, covering 18 miles in the 5th grade to win a season pass to Great America. And he has continued to develop that endurance to the point that he just toed the starting line of the Angeles Crest 100, which was his 3rd 100 mile event in the last 10 months. And we are just as excited to dive into mindset with this guy because he comes across as one of the most positive, encouraging individuals that we have connected with in the space. So stick around to hear how he got into ultra, the powerful rules that he lives by, and all the juicy, painful details of his recent ultra experiences. Enjoy the episode! Tasha Swartley, AKA "Thor," probably has the most unique set of skills out of anyone we have ever talked to. Not only is she a retired Navy Veteran who made a living loading bombs on jets, but she is also a Wilderness certified EMT who specializes in treating foot and other medical issues for ultra trail athletes. She has made a name for herself as the Destination Trail Races EMT and probably helped get a few of you busted up 200 mile runners out of the aid station and back out on the trail. And she has recently launched her own independent company as the Thor Trail Race Medic so keep an eye out for her at an ultra near you. Plug into to hear all about the crazy things she has encountered as a trail medic, what tips she has for us to avoid having to spend time in her chair at our next race, and also how she is preparing to take on her own first 200 mile run at the Tahoe 200 in 2025. Variety is the name of the game in the ultra world. Located in the town of Lillington NC, which is about an hour outside of Raleigh is the Cape Fear 24 Hour endurance run. The looped course is asphalt paved, flat, with one small incline, measures 0.59 mile and is USATF certified/sanctioned. To get a picture of this location, it will remind you of what you would see in many small towns with a paved trail running the outer perimeter of the Parks and Rec baseball fields. As you think about this race, consider this, the current course record was set last year at 130.78 miles, which turns out to be about 221 loops. So, if you like flat, paved, short loops where you are only about a half mile from your car with the option to run as many miles as you can in 24 hours, well then this is the race for you. Joining us today to talk about her race is the RD, Lisa McFadden who is an accomplished ultra runner in her own right having over 110 races on ultrasignup alone to her credit. Rebecca Scott is a fighter! A quick scan of her UltraSignup will definitely show that she's tough, with a podium finish in 12 of the 27 listed events, but what it won't show you are the obstacles that she has had to overcome to get here. Because the truth is that life is not always fair, and adversity is not evenly distributed, but she is a glaring example that even in the face of overwhelming odds, we all have the power to persevere. And in her case, to share extra positivity with those around her. Her goal at every ultra is to bring a smile to someone in the race, Because, in her own words, “You have no idea what someone has struggled with, and if you can bring a little light to their darkness, you are doing well.” So plug into to hear her inspiring story, why her kids had to kick her out of the car at Mile 80 of the Rocky Raccoon 100, and what type of race she swears to never do again after a recent, hard fought DFL experience. This is our FIRST race spotlight for a race that takes place outside of the US. This race is the largest trail race, the largest ultra, and the oldest ultra in Canada. And, as of May 2024, the first ever Western States Qualifying race based out of Ontario. The Sulphur Springs Trail race takes place on the trails of the Dundas Valley Conservation area located in Ancaster, Ontario. The event hosts multiple race distances ranging from a 10k all the way up to a 100 miler. According to the race description, the course is a 20k loop with 520 meters of elevation gain per loop. For those of us that find the metric system challenging, the math on that is that each loop is about 12.5 miles long with 1700 feet of elevation gain. Joining us on the podcast are two of the three Race Directors, Mauro Campanelli and Russell Thacker. Make sure to download for your next run, or jump over to YouTube to catch it there. We are heading down to Florida for this one. The Long Haul 100 miler consists of 6, 16.7 mile loops and runners have 32 hours to complete the race. However, this race is also a Western States qualifier, so if you finish this race in under 30 hours, you also earn your ticket to the Western States lottery. The race takes place in January each year, so for those looking to get that States lottery ticket, it allows you to knock that out early in the season. The Long Haul 100 is held in Colt Creek State Park in Lakeland, FL, is Trail Sister Approved and is great for runners looking to take on their first 100 and there are also a ton of veterans that flock to this race. We had a great time learning about this race, so take a few minutes and listen to get the inside scoop from the Race Director himself, Andy "Croom" Mathews. Race spotlight recommended by Rusty Smith. Jeff Browning is currently ranked 2nd in the world for most 100 mile career wins, having competed in over 200 ultras and standing at the top of the Podium for races like Hardrock, Bighorn 100, HURT 100, and so many more. He has been named in the top 10 ultra runners of the year an astounding 8 times, and at age 52, is the oldest male to ever be ranked. And he just keeps getting better. He took the win at 5 of his 7 races in 2023, and then kicked off this year with a win at the Coldwater Rumble 100, a podium slot at the Mesquite Canyon 50 miler, and then came across the line at the Cocodona 250 with a heart wrenching 2nd place finish due to a bout with Reactive Airway Dysfunction after absolutely dominating the majority of the race. He is renowned for his coaching, his expansive knowledge around training, strength work and nutrition, and after getting to spend a little time with him, we can confirm that he is the nicest dude you could ever hope to come across. No matter where you are in your ultra journey, there is always so much to learn from this guy so be sure to plug in for our chat with the one and only Jeff Browning, aka "Bronco Billy." It is not often that you stumble across the first of anything these days. But through the course of this episode, we learned a fun fact. This race was the first 100k race distance to be held in the state of Alabama. In the Heat of the Night 100k takes place in the Talladega Forest, in Anniston, Alabama. Not only is the first 100k in Alabama, but, as the name implies, what sets this 100k apart from others is that it is run at night. The course is a looped course and runners will complete 4 - 15+ mile loops on a surface of maintained dirt and gravel forest roads. You have 18 hours to complete the 100k, and the elevation gain is a little over 7900 feet. Interested? We all know that Ultras come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There is only one common denominator, an ultra, by definition is any race over 26.2 miles. In our race spotlights over the past year, we have never covered a race like this one. We first heard about this race from our good friend Michelle Goldberg who connected us with the race director and we are grateful to have runners in the community that continue to make recommendations to us about guests and races. Thank you all for that! On to the race, the Warriors UltraRun is an overnight, underground running experience that carries runners over 28 miles as they recreate the escape route from the iconic 1979 cult film by Walter Hill. After attending a 1 AM Conclave, held at a secret location in the Bronx, runners dressed as gang members pass movie shooting sights as they race for Coney Island. The course passes key landmarks from the movie and will run through Times Square and over the Brooklyn Bridge. Have we got your attention? It has gotten ours. The race is one of a kind. And there is so much more to learn about the race, so take some time to listen to our chat with the RD Todd Aydelotte. Aaron Stacy is a certified badass. And while he is probably likely to get mistaken for a muscle and fitness model vs a trail and ultra runner, there is no question that this guy is a monster on the course. But it wasn't always that way. As a lifelong law enforcement officer, running was not part of the picture until 2016, when, following the loss of 50 lbs so that he could train with his daughter, his wife dared him to run a last minute half marathon and a new love was born. He has since embraced a primal lifestyle, built a thriving coaching business, and uses his passion for helping others to help navigate the pain cave during tough races, 3 of which he has coming up over the next 3 months. So tune in while we chat with the Primal Run Coach about his inspiring story, how he is training for a huge summer, and why leadership and humility are at the foundation of everything he does. We LOVE episode recommendations for race spotlights or for guests on the show. And that is how we first heard of this race out of Nebraska. The Cowboy 200 was recommended by our friend Tyler (@crimsontyler88). On to the race, the Cowboy 200 is a point-to-point 200-mile footrace along the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska. This is a rails-to-trails course and is run on a non-technical, 100% runnable, crushed limestone path. NO MOTOR VEHICLES ARE ON THE TRAIL! There will be short paved sections when running through towns along the route. But that basically means, for 200 miles, you aren't dealing with cars along the way. The 200 miler has a cutoff of 84 hours (25:12/mile average) and based on some of our research looks like an incredible option for those runners looking to try out a 200 mile race that may be a little less daunting than one with a large amount of elevation. If you have been thinking about a 200 mile race, it may be time to add the Cowboy 200 to your list. We spoke with the race directors, Casey and Chase Hammond about the race and think you may be inspired to sign up! Melissa Londry ran her first 50K back in 2015, but it was during COVID that she really got warmed up, knocking out her first 100 miler as a virtual race and then completing an astounding 45 UltraSignup events since Feb of 2020, which doesn't even include other monster efforts such as the 240 mile Tridge to Bridge which is an unofficial and unsupported race in Michigan that she completed in 2023. The DAYTONA 100 is a point to point race that starts from Jacksonville Beach and goes south to Ponce Inlet, which is about 10 miles south of Daytona. The course is flat and is a solid choice for a first ultra or to set a PR. The race is run on pavement, so this is not a 100 miles of running on the sand down the coast. If you hear Florida and think, oh man, that is going to be real hot and humid for a 100 miler, don't lose heart, this race takes place in December, so that should help alleviate some of those concerns. Let us not also neglect the fact of who the race director is either. Bob Becker proves that age is just a number, and embodies our ethos of Showing Up. Bob holds the age group world record for 48 hours with 167.5 miles that he set in June 2023 at the age of 78. And, is also the oldest finisher of Badwater 135 that he finished in 2022 at the age of 77. Bob shatters the myth that we have to hang up the shoes, just because we are getting a little bit older. After realizing he had become the guy that parents warned their kids to stay away from, Todd Bogdaschewskyi joined the Marines to make something of himself. For today's race spotlight, we are heading to Memphis, Tennessee to take a look at the Mamba 100. The race is run mostly on single track with minimal elevation gain, which should make for a relatively faster course for the 100 mile distance. The course is a looped course with each loop being 14.3 miles. For everyone doing trail math right now, that would be 7 loops for the 100 miler. To top it off, runners have 34 hours to complete the distance, which is a pretty healthy cutoff time for a flatter 100 and sets this up to be a good race for those looking to tackle their first 100 miler. The Mamba 100 is only in its second year and is already on the verge of selling out. There are also cash awards for winners. BUT, not race winners necessarily. Instead they give this out as a raffle. So, all runners who register to run the race are eligible to win! 5 runners will be drawn at random to win cash in the amount of $1,000, $500, $300, $100, and $100. Want to learn more? Join us as we catch up with James Boler, Race Director for the Mamba 100. Trey Morrison has been on quite the journey. After a high school injury ended his sports aspirations, he found himself in a deep dark hole fueled by drugs, alcohol, and self hatred. And then, after losing his brother a few years ago, he hit rock bottom, and decided he only had 2 options. Suicide, or faith. Luckily for us, he chose faith and in December of 2022 his new path led him to his first 50K, followed by his first 100 miler a year later at the crazy tough Beast of The East 100 here in North Carolina. He has since launched his Run With Christ mission where he plans to run a 100 miler in all 50 states, taking on the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 in May to check off the state of VA. Join us while we chat with this coach and strength training gym owner about how he got here, what will keep him going, and how he plans to tackle fifty 100 milers to carry forward his mission. For ultra runners that are history buffs, this is the perfect combo. A race event that has a 50 mile and 100 mile option that allows runners to travel back in time to run along a portion of the historic Pony Express trail. The race takes place in Western Utah along a course that is very remote. The course is 100% dirt road and only has about 3000 feet of elevation gain/loss. Runners have 30 hours to complete the 100 miler, unless you are 60 and over, then you get 32 hours to complete. And it you want to learn about history, who better to host a race that takes runners along a journey back in time, than the ultra running historian himself, Davy Crockett. We hosted Davy on the podcast, on episode 70. Davy is the 15th person to have completed 100 mile races, is the director of the American Ultra Running Hall of Fame, the host of the Ultrarunning History Podcast, and is the RD for the Pony Express Trail Run. Prior to COVID, Chase Price was a gym rat who hated to run. But after putting in some time and targeting a few half marathons, he decided to "do something crazy" and set a personal goal of finishing a 100 Mile race. And boy, did he! Chase blazed through his first 100 miler at Blackbeard's Revenge, finishing in 16 hours and 17 minutes, claiming 2nd overall. He then went on to set a marathon PR of 2:44 only a few months before becoming one of only 6 people to have ever finished the Uwharrie 100 in under 24 hours, good enough for 1st place in 2023. He has since started the Casually Ambitious Podcast as well as founded the Casually Ambitious Performance Club. Tune in to hear his tips and tricks as as well as his big plans coming up in 2024! Our mission is to help runners take their next step along their ultra running journey. With this series of Race Spotlight episodes, we want to introduce you to races that you may or may not have heard of by speaking directly to the Race Directors to give you all the information you need. We have featured a few of the races put on by Aravaipa running which is based out of the Southwest, but what many runners are not aware of is that Aravaipa has also partnered with White Mountain Endurance to host races on the East Coast. This episode spotlights one of those races, the Jigger Johnson 100. According to their website, the Jigger Johnson 100 is one of the world's most grueling trail races. Located in White Mountains National Park in New Hampshire, the race is a 100 mile out and back with an actual mileage of 112 miles and 32,000 feet of elevation gain with a cutoff of 54 hours. Some key info though, the max elevation is 4,340 feet, so you won't be climbing Mt Rushmore and probably not dealing with any form of altitude sickness or acclimation needed. But the race is absolutely tough, remote, and is designed for those that are comfortable being off the grid. Take a few minutes to learn more about this incredible race, the Jigger Johnson, from co Race Directors, Kristina Folcik and Rem Stone. With these Race Spotlight episodes, our goal is to introduce a race to the Ultra Running Guys family, but, it is also not every day that you get to have as a guest, one of the legends of the sport. There is nothing cooler than to be able to learn about a race that is also hosted by a legend. Let us tell you about the race first. Today we are talking about the Route 66 UltraRun. The race is liking taking a journey through classic Americana. Covering 140 miles the race, the race follows the longest remaining unbroken stretched of Route 66, from Seligman to Topock66, AZ. The Route 66 UltraRun is held on the 2nd weekend of November and takes place from Saturday to Monday and has a 60 hour cutoff. The race director is Marshall Ulrich. As recently as 2022, Diana Gorder believed that running 100 miles was a personal impossibility, an iconic feat reserved for the ultra fit. And then within a year, she set the course record at the 2022 Nutcracker Endurance Run 12 Hour (75 miles), took 1st place female at the 2023 Blackbeard's Revenge 100 Miler (18:44:08), and set another course record with the overall win at the 2023 Tideland 24 Hour with 117 miles, just 8 miles off the current 24 Hour World Championship qualifying standard. Not bad for someone who ignores her watch, runs by feel, and only has 2 followers on Strava (it's us by the way). Our mission is to help runners take their next step along their ultra running journey. With this series of Race Spotlight episodes, we want to introduce you to races that you may or may not have heard of by speaking directly to the Race Directors to give you all the information you need. On this episode, we want to welcome you to the world of Javelina. I don't know if this is actually a race or not. Over the past several years this race has just continued to explode in popularity. Everything about it just feels like the Woodstock of Ultra running where the entire community comes together to just have a great time out in the Arizona desert. But there is a race that takes place in the middle of this party, and it has had some blazing fast times with Jonathan Rea setting the course record in 12 hours 43 minutes in 2023 and Camille Herron setting it for the women in 2021 with a blistering time of 14 hours and 3 minutes. The 100 mile race, known as the Javelina Jundred, covers 5 loops that wind through Sonoran desert. Elevation gain is minimal at about 1580 feet for each loop, while running on a surface of packed granite, rocks and sand. After listening to this episode, we can guarantee that the Javelina Jundred will show up on your list of must do races in the future. After years as a busted up runner who seemed to constantly be facing injury, Jameson Collins had a life changing moment in 2021 that sent him on a trajectory to signing up for a marathon, then a 50K and then...the MOAB 240. In 2023, less than 2 years after his epiphany, Jameson finished 2nd overall for the combined times of the Triple Crown of 200s, proving to himself and others that we are capable of more than we ever might believe. This was one of the most insightful discussions we have ever had and it shouldn't take you long to realize Jameson is not just lucky or gifted, he is a mindset juggernaut that has transformed himself mentally and physically and he is on a mission to share what he has learned with others. Welcome to the Yeti Army! The Yeti 100 is one of those races that just needs to be experienced. When it comes to community and a sense of family, the Yeti trail races are top notch. Both of us have finished this race and both of us have DNF'ed it. So, we speak from experience when we tell you that this 100 is one of those that needs to be on your list. The Yeti 100 takes place the last weekend in September in Damascus, Virginia. The race starts at White Top and has a gradual descent for the first 18 miles that most everyone runs too fast, but the adrenaline and experience makes it hard not to! The race is run on the Virginia Creeper trail and surface is not technical. Jason Green, Race Director of the Yeti 100, joins us on the show to talk about all things Yeti. Before we even get into it the race, we touched on the World Trail Majors that had been announced one day before this recording and when opportunity presents itself, well, you ask. So that's what we did. In today's show we are focusing on the Black Canyon 100k. The race takes place in February, in Arizona, and is a point to point race along the Black Canyon Trail. The trail is a mix of single track, jeep roads and parts of it are along an old stagecoach route. The race has more elevation loss than gain, with an elevation gain of 5190 feet and loss of 7050 feet over the 100k. Runners have 20 hours to finish, and if you want to make it your Western States qualifier, you have to get it done in under 17. Join us as we sit down with Jamil Coury, the Owner and CEO of Aravaipa Running as we talk all things Black Canyon! If you like the show, leave us a comment or rating to help others hear about it. We appreciate you taking the time to join us. Matt and Paul Murray are twin brothers who have finished 4 of the 5 200 mile races that they have attempted. But before jumping into the Tahoe 200 in 2018, they had never raced more than a 5K...and to this day they have never tackled an ultra less than 200 miles.
Our mission is to help you take your next step on your ultra running journey. And, sometimes, if you are like us, you may not know what that next step may look like. Races can come in all different types of formats with varying distances, duration, and locations. Training for ultras often includes considerations for heat training, elevation, and altitude changes. But there are those gems out there that turn the equation around and challenge runners to the other extreme. Welcome to the world of cold. We'd like to introduce you to the Frigid Fox which takes place in January and is a 63 mile trek along the Ice Age Trail in Southeastern Wisconsin with an elevation gain of a little over 7000 feet. The race has a 24 hour cutoff which seems like a generous cutoff until you understand how harsh the weather can be in Wisconsin in January. Part of signing up for this race is that runners acknowledge an understanding that the weather can be unforgiving. That's what makes this race unique and one heckuva challenge we think. Join us as we sit down with Dustin Schmidt, the Race Director of the Frigid Fox to tell us all about it. If you like the show, leave us a comment or rating to help others hear about it. Avery Matthews is one of the kindest human beings you will ever come across. She is also one of the toughest. We sat down with her shortly after her agonizing DNF at mile 99 of the Grindstone 100 and got a chance to see what makes her tick. To say it was inspiring would be a major understatement.Avery will just so happen to be hitting the course at the Rim To River 100 on the same day that this episode drops so give it a listen and then send her some love and encouragement. She can use it during her recovery before she also takes on the @dirty_wolf_racing Beast Of The East 100 in December. We just featured that race in Episode 92 so check it out if you haven't already.Be sure to connect with Avery at @thelowcountryrunner and let us know what your favorite takeaway is! Enjoy! Our mission is to help you take your next step on your ultra running journey. And, sometimes, if you are like us, you may not know what that next step may look like. We joke a lot on the main show about the fact that we live on the east coast of NC and it is pancake flat. BUT, we do have a race that is about 4 hours away from us that is anything but flat. The Beast of the East 100 takes place in King Mountain, NC and runs the entire trail system of Crowder's Mountain. The 100 miler is a looped course of roughly 25 miles each loop and has a total elevation gain and loss of over 19,000 feet. The course is trails, with some fire roads, and can be pretty technical at times. Richard Abernathy is the Race Director for the Beast of the East 100 and we sat down with him to get some info about the race for you. So take a few minutes and enjoy the episode. Just over 14 months ago, Paul Johnson wasn't running seriously. And now, just over a year later, he has taken on the Canyons 100, the World Series of Ultra Running UTMB, set a personal marathon best of 2:46 and at the time this recording drops he will be setting out for a 150 mile training adventure from Newport, Rhode Island to Boston and back, all in preparation for a world record attempt from Los Angeles to New York beginning in March 2024. And while all this is impressive, we were more impressed by who Paul is as a person and his constant willingness to look inside, be honest with what he sees, and take action to improve. It's something we can ALL learn from. So take us on your long run and like always, let us know what you think. Ladies and gentlemen, Paul Johnson!
